Great video. I just got one yesterday and it’s beautiful. A couple things I’ve noticed is that 1 when I have my PS5 on sleep mode and power on the portal it doesn’t always power up the console when it’s trying to connect to it. It’s turned it on about 50% of the time which is super annoying. 2. it runs games installed on the PS5 Buttery smooth, but when I play say Diablo 4, which your constantly connected to the internet to play, I did experience quite a bit of lag. Granted I haven’t even owned this for 24 hrs yet so I’m still learning it.
Great video! I'm interested in getting one, the one thing I'm thinking, is that it seems like Sony might have missed an opportunity to set Portal to work as an actual PS5 controller, while the screen could be used as a second screen, while playing games with large maps, and exploration like in the Horizon games, Spiderman, TLOU, or upgrading skills in games where you unlock them as you play.
Wanted to provide an updated review... I have had the portal for a month now. Last night during MNF I was able to relax on the couch, with the Portal playing Diablo 4. Super cool to be able to have a mobile device for gaming. I have used it sitting out on my deck a few times and overall messing about. Its such a cool device. Having been injured years ago, I have to move positions often and the Portal keeps me from having to tote around a console and cables. Highly recommend. Battery does great as well.
I’ve had mine for a little over a week, and for me personally it’s been a fantastic edition to my gaming life. I’m only a casual gamer that plays PlayStation so for this at only £200 to basically take and use my PS5 anywhere and everywhere has been well worth the investment. It’s not going to be for everyone but pure convenience and freedom, topped with the quality of the controller itself it’s a great bit of gadget kit.
I just bought one of these myself after trading in a bunch of old stuff after being skeptical about it since release and I’m genuinely kicking myself for not getting one sooner. Absolutely gorgeous and so seamless with the connection to my main console. I think my only complaint is the thick bezels. If they made a Portal 2, that’s what I’d want them to work on to give us more screen real estate.

The G Cloud at least can easily remote play PS5 without attaching a separate controller, if you use PSPlay. Now, the Portal is still potentially better for PS5-only gaming as it has better controls and the full PS haptics support (instead of the G Cloud's wimpy mobile vibration haptics emulation), plus a larger screen. I recently bought a PS5 with Spider-Man and The Last of Us. Now I'm undecided about whether to get the Logitech G Cloud or something else. The drawback of the Logitech G Cloud is that your PS5 can't be in sleep mode. However, the upside is that you can do almost anything on it, whereas the other option is only meant for PS5 games.
I wanted to love it but there were a few things holding it back for me. 1. No Bluetooth. This is crazy to me that the only thing you can do is connect their proprietary devices to the Portal. 2. The infamous stutter… 3. No HDMI support.
The Bluetooth is a big drawback for sure, I want to use my wireless headset with it but can’t and that sucks. I’ve only had a stutter issue once when my internet dropped out but 99.9% of the time it’s been fine. Curious as to what you want the HDMI for on a device of this type though
Bluetooth is not really that big of an issue. The stutter is probably your own internet setup not the portals and why do you need an hdmi connection for.
@@SpuddGaming HDMI would be huge if you are a big traveler like I am, If I wanted to play it as a controller and have it up on my hotel room tv would be awesome.
I was debating between getting one of these and just getting a Backbone controller. The about using a Backbone w/ Remote Play is that it still doesn't work unless you're on the same network as you're console. I'll prob pick one up next week 😄
Very good review. just one question, I play F124 on my PS5. however, my goal with the Portal is to play the same game. Do you feel stutter or some sort of difference in response?
The problem with the Portal isn't playing at home near your network. The issue is gaming on the go. There are still connectivity issues playing the Portal on wifi.
So my question is do you have to be near your ps5 in order to play the games on wifi? I can’t be like playing games on wifi at the barbershop or something while my ps5 is at home?
@@MrAkatosh "it's called airplane mode for a reason buddy". Your comment is condescending and doesn't make sense in response to my own, I'm sure you could turn off Wi-Fi in settings but you can also turn off the device itself, what is the point of having an airplane mode when there is almost no signal coming from the device that would matter. You can't download games to the device either, so you literally would have the device on or off when not in use. A handful of people seem to agree with me on this.
I think at £199 the portal is over priced. It really should offer more and that may come in time with updates. However i decided to get one after finding out that ebay is full of barely used units. I managed to pick one up, with a case, a protective shell and a screen protector for £132. At that price it was a steal and i even saw some going slightly cheaper, with just a boxed unit. So my advice would be check out the second hand market as, lots of people have bought these but aren't finding the use case and then selling up.
Does the joysticks have hall effect sensor or are they still using the cheap and destined to fail potentiometers? Sticks gonna get drift within a year. Also no playstation plus streaming which is wild, it's basically a screen on a remote so great for taking a dump whilst gaming I guess 🤷♂️
Sometimes my portal sucks and sometimes it’s smooth. When it’s good i actually refer it on the portal, when it sucks, I wish I returned it haha just depends on the day.

I had to sell mine since I could only use it only on my home wifi network. Defeats the purpose for me since I wanted to use it alot on my commute and wifi at work.

They only seem to at FIFA and Fortnite is it worth getting them these instead of buying two more ps5's
Silly question but I see people touching the Portal screen to make menu selections all the time. Can you just use the thumb sticks, in order to cut down on fingerprint smudges?
I have a question, is the portal needs a ps5 or it can work like a nitendo switch and i know you told it in the video but just to be sure i dont have a ps5 console and it way to expensive.
Can this be played on a second account or you main ? So for example if I’m playing a game would my partner be able to log into her account and play it with me on the same game ? Example call of duty etc
I got one as a present, but I really don’t like the low fps in games, why wouldn’t they make the streaming the same fps as on ps5? Because of this I only plan some indie/old games. AAA titles are kept for the original console. Also battery drains fast and sometimes the streaming quality is doubtful, for no reason at all. Apart from that it’s a great device, I really enjoy it and I recommend to have it. I am exploring various places of my apartment where I can play 😅

I recently bought a PS5 with Spider-Man and The Last of Us. Now I'm undecided about whether to get the Logitech G Cloud or something else. The drawback of the Logitech G Cloud is that your PS5 can't be in sleep mode. However, the upside is that you can do almost anything on it, whereas the other option is only meant for PS5 games.
i bought one of these for a holiday trip a while ago, almost as a semi late birthday present. currently waiting for an update lol

I am so Happy I got my PlayStation Portal and I love it I just turn off my PlayStation 5 Hdmi on the settings and it works perfectly fine
I wanted to love it but there were a few things holding it back for me.
1. No Bluetooth. This is crazy to me that the only thing you can do is connect their proprietary devices to the Portal.
2. The infamous stutter…
Might be a silly question, but can this be used as an additional controller when gaming locally with a family member or friend?
I believe it mirrors gameplay to your ps5, so i doubt it
it can
I was debating between getting one of these and just getting a Backbone controller. The about using a Backbone w/ Remote Play is that it still doesn't work unless you're on the same network as you're console. I'll prob pick one up next week 😄
Good videos.. cool set up..
Thank you 😁
Very good review. just one question, I play F124 on my PS5. however, my goal with the Portal is to play the same game. Do you feel stutter or some sort of difference in response?
Really good review! Can you livestream from it?
The problem with the Portal isn't playing at home near your network. The issue is gaming on the go. There are still connectivity issues playing the Portal on wifi.
it would be killer move from sony that if you had a ps now subscription you can play the games directly on the portal
Well, I guess they saw your comment
So my question is do you have to be near your ps5 in order to play the games on wifi? I can’t be like playing games on wifi at the barbershop or something while my ps5 is at home?
You can play on any WiFi anywhere, you don’t need to be next to your console
@@SpuddGaming sold!
@@SpuddGamingbut what if your ps5 is off and u dont want to pay for for ps plus premium? U cant play the games u own on ps5 digitaly
What the hell is airplane mode used for if this only uses WiFi and you would most likely have the device turned off or on anyway?
I was thinking the same
If ur off on a plane just turn all your Wi-Fi off
It’s called airplane mode for a reason buddy
@@MrAkatosh "it's called airplane mode for a reason buddy". Your comment is condescending and doesn't make sense in response to my own, I'm sure you could turn off Wi-Fi in settings but you can also turn off the device itself, what is the point of having an airplane mode when there is almost no signal coming from the device that would matter. You can't download games to the device either, so you literally would have the device on or off when not in use. A handful of people seem to agree with me on this.
it's an FCC requirement. -> law.
Do you think a 350ish MB speed would be on par with your latency? Seems to be doing quite well for you
Does the joysticks have hall effect sensor or are they still using the cheap and destined to fail potentiometers? Sticks gonna get drift within a year. Also no playstation plus streaming which is wild, it's basically a screen on a remote so great for taking a dump whilst gaming I guess 🤷♂️
Sometimes my portal sucks and sometimes it’s smooth. When it’s good i actually refer it on the portal, when it sucks, I wish I returned it haha just depends on the day.
Yeah I get 10MBs on a sunny day. Rural life is hard.
Damn, that’s a struggle
I live in countryside and ended up getting Starlink getting around 350mb download and 28mb upload and portal seems to work good😊
@@waifuowner911 I live in a holler between two mountains. Satellites don’t work here. I’m lucky there’s even one internet provider at all in this area, and that it stretched its DSL out this far. If I could get Starlink I definitely would.
@briandprice1981 Close, Southeastern Kentucky. Most of Appalachia is in the same boat outside of towns and cities I guess.
I bought a 2tb hard drive, l have more than 60 games stored that’s where the portal shines. All the games at my finger tips
I JUST BOUGHT ONE AND STILL TRY TO GET USED TO IT, BUT I LOVE IT. IT AT LEAST TO ME SOMETIMES GETS SLOW OR DISCONNECTS FROM THE WIFI
Nice video as always my guy 🫡
Thanks my dude 😁
I was about to sell mine, but the updates changed my mind!!!
What were the updates?
Great vid. Im buying
Not a bad device if you own PS5 think it as expensive controller with screen, btw the price comparison with handheld pc is totally wrong because you forget to include the PS5 console itself unless you want pretty expensive paper weight 😅
Out of curiosity what happens if the controller parts go bad like the joysticks. Also silly you have to have your ps on or cant leave your house kinda point less for some
I had to sell mine since I could only use it only on my home wifi network.
Defeats the purpose for me since I wanted to use it alot on my commute and wifi at work.
the issue I have with this is longevity, this will only last with the current ps5 console and maybe ps5 pro if that comes out. where the ally or other pc gaming may last longer cause they are standalone.
Probably gonna buy one but what is the Airplane-mode good for??? Isn't it useless then?
Can you use the mic, for example for game chats. For example with switch lite you can’t chat to friends as there’s no mic support
@@callumhollamby2189 yes the mic is available with the portal just as it is with the actual controller
Yes it works just the same as on the PS5 controller
Yes
Sold mine yesterday. Too many disconnection issues outside of the home. Ended up being a paper weight
seems like you have poor connection, 5G hotspot from the phone have very steady connection without delay
@@stephen729 this was happening on a 5G connection with AT&T unfortunately. I wish it would’ve worked for me
@@RowdyRichh ic, although it can connect outside of home, its a device made mainly for use at home so its not the best device for you anyway as you dont use it at home
@stephen729 not much of a portal if you have to be home to get it to work optimally.
@@Codyslx that’s what I was thinking. If I wanted to play at home, I’d just play on the tv
I wish you could use it as a second screen for a coop game
I watched Tronix fix on fixing a bunch of these and I'll wait until they upgrade the thumb sticks
Can I ask a question please, my two boys have ps5's at home with their mum.
When they come up to my house they don't bring them, I was thinking of getting them these for Christmas to keep at my house to play when at my place.
They only seem to at FIFA and Fortnite is it worth getting them these instead of buying two more ps5's
Silly question but I see people touching the Portal screen to make menu selections all the time. Can you just use the thumb sticks, in order to cut down on fingerprint smudges?
If only this thing was local play. No internet required. Thatd eliminate the lag issues. But still thinking about picking one of these up
I have a question, is the portal needs a ps5 or it can work like a nitendo switch and i know you told it in the video but just to be sure i dont have a ps5 console and it way to expensive.
I am exploring various places of my apartment where I can play 😅
great video,
Thank you 😁
On the go? Can you take it outside?
Can you hook up Bluetooth headphones to it?
Does it work with coop games with a tv screen ?
Can you play on the portal whilst someone else plays on your ps5 on their own account??
Can you travel it with you when you go away on vacation?
I use PS Remote Play on my iPad and bring a controller with me, and it’s actually awesome
I Never use my Switch anymore, love it.
Got one, it’s great but it would’ve been perfect if it was OLED
I got the ps portal to but every time I play with it the connection is bad
Gonna buy this
All the way from Malaysia here 🇲🇾!!
Been playing my PlayStation with the ps portal for some months now and since the newest update I have been really enjoying playing with the ps portal and I think Sony should add in a feature for having split screen such as playing It Takes Two with my girlfriend and we found out that it would be absolutely amazing if we could have portal to split screen player 2 on the portal with full size gameplay since we don’t really have 2 different PlayStation or tv to separate the screen.. just sharing my thoughts
So can you play on this at work on your break as long as you have your ps5 on at home and have a hotspot from your phone?
