As someone who has completed FES and is playing p3p right now, I would suggest playing FES, just use controllable party and HD mods. It makes the game a much better experience than portable, and if you want, there is even fast travel mods as well as a female protagonist mod for FES, so FES is much better you just have to mod it, but without mods, I still think FES is slightly better because of the better graphics, 3d cutscenes, and the ability to walk around the overworld. Without 3d cutscenes, the game just feels so bland.
The first persona game I ever played was portable so it definitely holds a special place in my heart, I have recently started playing fes with these mentioned mods and it is definitely a worthwhile experience.
Worth noting that fans are working on this in reverse too. There are HD and cutscene insertion mods in the works. The cutscene one is finished according to the project page but in final testing I think.
Or just use the tactics menu and you can be fine as well if you get confused trying to mod games. I know it adds an extra step to combat but it genuinely feels like no one uses it, I literally never ran into as many party issues as people joke about.

Fes takes away full control of party, portable has more personas, more weapons, more spells and abilities, has skill cards makes it so you can build each person's how you want instead it being a game of chance, just like the guy said portable is definitely the better game

Personally, I like the fes version due to the 3d environment and cutscene help to make the story make more sense and there is a epilogue that completes the story although I don't like non-controllable party, you can modify the game with emulation which is pretty easy the main reason I play the portable version is because of the female mc and because she has different social link but I never really like they reduce it to visual novel style and took out the animated cutscene but considered it was made for the psp I can understand This how I see it If you want to experience the male mc story play the FES version if you want to experience the female mc story play the portable version I would honestly love fes with hd graphics and 60fps gameplay
As someone who played persona 3 fes but never beat it cause my ps3 died but I'm still going to buy the p3p, I say this. To everyone saying, "just mod fes, just emulate fes, just mod p3p" alot of people can't do that. This is the only option they have. Yes I'm upset that we didn't get Fes but i am glad we at least got persona 3 at all.
I'm currently debating on getting this, or the other two games on switch. 3 especially was super debatable due to how many fans were disappointed with P3P.
any half decent computer can emulate PS2 games, and people who can't afford computers that are less than 10 years old don't have a Switch. i genuinely don't see any reason why people don't just emulate the game if they are well off enough to pay for a worse version of it

You don't really have to mod anything to get that playable party control though, just download the game with the patch already installed and there you go, it takes like maybe 5 minutes to set it all up
I honestly only played Persona 3 Portable for the FeMc, Kotone, because I'd beaten P3FES a few times before and really wanted to have a new perspective (as advertised) and I was not disappointed. It was one of the best Persona experiences I've ever had, I'm stuck between P3 and P4 being my favorite Persona games.
I don't mind the cutbacks p3p made in favor of its content. The visual novel aspects have their charm. The lack of animated cutscenes and The Answer is a heavy loss, but I'll survive.
I call persona 3 the gateway cause it was my first smt game, then it made me call nocturne the addictor because I got so addicted to the series after playing nocturne which made made call DDs the punisher cause of its hard boss fights
the thing i dont get is that why people think that is a point towards FES, when you could do the same thing not just in portable, but every persona game after that. Like its be one thing if you could ONLY control party members in portable, but if you wanted the FES option of not controlling party members than you can. Feels like even people who like the non controllable party members forget this and turn on party member controlling anyway

For me, I still own FES on PS2/PS3 so it's not really an issue with getting P3P for the PS4 as that's a version I didn't have access to along with Golden which I'm hyped to finally be able to play as well. If they had ported FES, I honestly wouldn't see the appeal in picking it up because as a port, the only things that would have been done are the small QoL changes. I'd want to have new content like how some remasters go and bring over an International version of a game which was content only available in Japan thus loads of stuff that would be new to me. Being familiar with the story does help get around the big drawback of not having the animated cutscenes and I do like the big differences with FemMC as that was something I've wanted to check out for the longest time as the only other place I know her from was playing Q2. It's weird because sometimes I wanna keep the AI party members for the sake of nostalgia because it's too easy to take control and be on your way when you're very familiar with the mechanics lol
I prefer FES for a few reasons, you're right about all of your points though, P3 can be very annoying, but still, P4Golden can be just as annoying as you can get, if you play on higher difficulties. But losing the personality of most characters to compromise with 2D visual novel style, works on PSP, but feels wasted on PC or big consoles. If they didn't want to use the PS2 assets that are higher in quality because they would need to make other characters for the FemC route AND do more cutscenes, fine, but they could at least give us overworld in 3D by making it on the PSP style models. In the end, it's a visual thing, but the presentation of P3 Fes is what makes me love Persona 3. The presentation on PSP makes me want to skip all dialog just so I can experience the battle. To me, the sole reason they didn't mix both versions is because of the extra work on cutscenes and sprites for the FemC character. If she wasn't a factor, that could be different. But another factor I think that is at play here is that Persona 3 took the hit for PErsona 5. While Persona 4 Golden was very well done for PS Vita, and because of that, it was mostly just ported to PC, they didn't had to do a lot of changes in the version to add to consoles. Persona 5 Royal, however, that's the big game, that's where the money is. You can see that the changes in P4G are the bare minimum, while P3 also had the bare minimum done. I still think it's perfect for PSP. IT's definitely horrible on a big screen. In the end, the feeling I get is that they sacrificed P3 and P4 to give P5R everything they could. And that feel lazy, also it feels very Square Enix now that I think about it. IT's a shame though. I love the original P3, and I believe P3P could be a good extra to add to the game, for example, making the entire Visual novel experience for the FemC, but letting the 3D overworld for the Male protagonist, again, that also don't make sense. If you have one version for one character and another for the other, why not just make the same for both? Then, P3P is mostly done, after all. It's a shame, really.
Good video, honestly better than most I see talking about this. What i'm saying is, there is no reason to lock yourself to the base versions of these games, because they had a LOT of time to be improved by the community. But maybe that was all outside of the scope of the video and the idea was to just talk abou the base versions provided by atlus which is understandable although I disagree heavilly with the concept of playing these original versions, you're just forcing yourself to have a worse experience for no reason at that point. Oh and if you want to play the p3p version it also has an HD mod which is MUCH better than what atlus did with this new port. And you didn't do the thing everyone used to do when talking about p3fes which is "the answer is unecessary filler and it sux", which is just wrong btw.

As someone who's first persona game was persona 3 portable let me save you 16 minutes of your life plus another few minutes of reading these ridiculous elitist comments. If you've never played persona3 then go ahead and play P3P. The game itself still tells the story of p3 and you still experience the emotions along the way. You can't miss what you never had so for the people preaching "play fes with full party control mods" are so close minded and fail to realize not EVERYONE played FES so why would I hold P3P against it? You can literally set it to where you can control your teammates in battle goofys. Look long story short, if it intrigues you then go for it play it I promise you will enjoy the game regardless of what a few internet elitist think. Play what YOU think will be fun for you, not what people tell you.

At first, neither FES nor Portable clicked for me, but after playing through Reload it's kind of fun to play FeMC in P3P, it's like playing a demake in an alternate dimension :D So that would be my subjective recommendation currently ^^
Playing modded FES version using emulator on PC and enjoying the best of both versions. Can save anywhere using the emulator save feature, have party control mod to control all team members, quick travel menu, and a bunch of other customizations (hd textures, rebalance...). Afaik the only things I'm missing are the female MC and jobs. But imo it's a good compromise.
Wow, I just saw a comparison of PSP vs FES where PSP version shows no 3D models in the background of dialogs, that's terrible. I'm can't describe how glad I am to play the superior version 😂
If you want a fast pace like me. I want the Portable version of persona 3, I hope I can try it in Switch. I just said it coz Persona 4 and 3 FES looks the same and the color are not that attractive in my eyes. Unlike the Portable one I find it cute especially with the FEMC coz of its vibrant color pink.
Currently playing Portable. I was really hyped to play this game and even though I'm having fun... I don't know. I feel like I'm more and more playing the game just because? I don't know. Really mixed feeling. All those 3d animations missing really make everyday go by really really quickly. And it's hard to really get in the story when everything is told through a PowerPoint. And to make things worst. The remake persona 3 reload just got announced and now I'm pretty sure that if I had known that before. I'd probably wouldn't have spend 20 euro on p3p. Everytime I see fes gameplay, just moving around in town. Seeing character move while talking. It looks like so much more fun. i find pfp a lot harder to binge due to the lack of 3d environments. it’s not nearly as engaging as fes,p4,and p5. i could play those games for hours on end

Ive played fes like 3 or 4 times and was never able to finish for a verity of reasons. I recently bought the portable version on the switch, and while the game being turned into a visual novel is annoying and uninteresting, ive found a video of all the fes story stuff to watch while i explore explore tartarus. Overall thoughts and feels: unless you need to see your guy moving and the extra chapter, portable is fine. Still plan on getting a ps3 for the Full fes experience and maybe the chapter later
i just got through a playthrough of modded FES, and i've played P3P (but not the remaster), and i think it is the best version for me. i also beat vanilla FES and fought through the party AI, so it has a special place in my heart. i think FES is better overall for me, as i do enjoy things that fight me but work well once you've mastered the mechanics (i drive a stick rather than automatic, so take what i say with a grain of salt lol). the main difference to me seems that P3P and even modded FES lean towards a well rounded party where you can rely on other characters to support the MC, much like P4 and P5 BUT FES is more of a showing in how strong you can be to lead the party. there are quite a few situations in FES where your best bet is going it alone and outright leaving your party members, which can be off putting to some players. i won't spoil too much here, but it's possible this was an intentional design choice given the themes of the game and its ending, even the inception of the MC makes him special and stronger, so i didn't mind this role. i also see the other side with this being a burden though, as it does seem counter-intuitive to have, let's say, a character who is proficient in physical attacks and fire ;) who is less reliable than separate personas like Surt and Su'sanoo for the MC which fulfill those roles. like i mentioned earlier, it can sort of make your party obsolete, which goes against one of the main gameplay mechanics of having a team lol. FES requires solid resource management, both in and out of combat. in combat, since there is no SP restoration like newer games unless you return to the base floor of Tartarus (which has the drawback of instantly sending home tired or sick party members), there will be times when all you have is your items to bring your resources back without calling it a day (where it's arguably better to just rest up until you get to Good condition, especially on Hard difficulty), but you only have a few more floors to go before your checkpoint/objective. this was largely done away with in later versions, and i think there's good reason for its exclusion. i still enjoy the need to be optimal with time usage, but it's also arguable that once you get the hang of it, it just stands in the way of the player behaving as they really want to. regarding outside of combat, each block of the story is locked behind the in game calendar so there will be times where (in FES) you pretty much have nothing to do, especially in end game. this can again ruin immersion. while beginning and mid game can slightly remedy this with Social Links, without jobs, all you do is dungeon for a few days, social link, and story fights (wash, rinse, repeat). P4 remedied this by adding in jobs you can do, and raising stats is important, but not really that important if you don't like the specific link (Fuuka/Courage, Mitsuru/Knowledge, Tanaka/Charm, etc). however, if you want the strongest personas (which i'd argue are necessary on Hard), you will have a slight variation in gaining stats which makes the game fun again. (i think you then run into the issue of why not go for all Max S Links, but then you basically have to follow a guide to the letter or you're sooo fucked lol).
I didn't know persona 3 had different versions and I played the portable version on switch and hated it. Not being able to walk around during daytime threw me off
I’m just… not gonna play Persona 3. It seems like no version has all the stuff I want to experience in one (FeMC and The Answer). So I’m just gonna stick with Persona 4 Golden and Persona 5 Royal as the Persona games I’ll play
It's funny how all thaoe reviews straight up ignore that the balance is completely destroyed in Portable purely by the addition of direct commands and guard moves.
Only reason to play P3P is for the FemC route or if its the only version you can play. Reload's better but so is FES. If you really need direct commands use a modded iso on a emulator or use a cheat code on emulator or cheat device like a gameshark.
The answer to the title question is: yes portable is worth playing. But is this version the one you should be playing? NO. Buy the psp one or emulate it but do not support this shit until it gets a patch.

Its not worth it to play P3P. Its not really better in any aspect than the already existing P3FES, and lacks so much content. Also keep in mind that we might gonna get a P3 remake so better wait for that.

I've played Portable and now I'm playing FES, and I can say that FES is my favorite for three reasons:
-fusion spells
-The answer
-anime cutscenes.

Unpopular opinion but I LOVE how party members do their own thing, it adds strategy and honestly makes them feel like their own people

Atlas should of remastered FES with the added content from Portable.
Fes feels so slow compared to the portable version. After playing p3p again, going back to fes just to play "the answer" felt like a chore

But maybe that was all outside of the scope of the video and the idea was to just talk abou the base versions provided by atlus which is understandable although I disagree heavilly with the concept of playing these original versions, you're just forcing yourself to have a worse experience for no reason at that point. Oh and if you want to play the p3p version it also has an HD mod which is MUCH better than what atlus did with this new port.

As someone who's first persona game was persona 3 portable let me save you 16 minutes of your life plus another few minutes of reading these ridiculous elitist comments. If you've never played persona3 then go ahead and play P3P. The game itself still tells the story of p3 and you still experience the emotions along the way. You can't miss what you never had so for the people preaching "play fes with full party control mods" are so close minded and fail to realize not EVERYONE played FES so why would I hold P3P against it? You can literally set it to where you can control your teammates in battle goofys. Look long story short, if it intrigues you then go for it play it I promise you will enjoy the game regardless of what a few internet elitist think. Play what YOU think will be fun for you, not what people tell you.

At first, neither FES nor Portable clicked for me, but after playing through Reload it's kind of fun to play FeMC in P3P, it's like playing a demake in an alternate dimension :D

Playing modded FES version using emulator on PC and enjoying the best of both versions. Can save anywhere using the emulator save feature, have party control mod to control all team members, quick travel menu, and a bunch of other customizations (hd textures, rebalance...).
Afaik the only things I'm missing are the female MC and jobs. But imo it's a good compromise.
Wow, I just saw a comparison of PSP vs FES where PSP version shows no 3D models in the background of dialogs, that's terrible. I'm can't describe how glad I am to play the superior version 😂

If you want a fast pace like me. I want the Portable version of persona 3, I hope I can try it in Switch. I just said it coz Persona 4 and 3 FES looks the same and the color are not that attractive in my eyes. Unlike the Portable one I find it cute especially with the FEMC coz of its vibrant color pink.
Currently playing Portable. I was really hyped to play this game and even though I'm having fun... I don't know. I feel like I'm more and more playing the game just because? I don't know. Really mixed feeling. All those 3d animations missing really make everyday go by really really quickly. And it's hard to really get in the story when everything is told through a PowerPoint. And to make things worst. The remake persona 3 reload just got announced and now I'm pretty sure that if I had known that before. I'd probably wouldn't have spend 20 euro on p3p. Everytime I see fes gameplay, just moving around in town. Seeing character move while talking. It looks like so much more fun.

I think I prefer it as a visual novel because those age better. Let's be real those PS2 graphics haven't aged the best so I'm not really missing them. Also I was never a fan of The Answer so the only thing I'm really missing is the 2D animated cutscenes.

Ive played fes like 3 or 4 times and was never able to finish for a verity of reasons. I recently bought the portable version on the switch, and while the game being turned into a visual novel is annoying and uninteresting, ive found a video of all the fes story stuff to watch while i explore explore tartarus.
Overall thoughts and feels: unless you need to see your guy moving and the extra chapter, portable is fine.
Still plan on getting a ps3 for the Full fes experience and maybe the chapter later

i just got through a playthrough of modded FES, and i've played P3P (but not the remaster), and i think it is the best version for me. i also beat vanilla FES and fought through the party AI, so it has a special place in my heart. i think FES is better overall for me, as i do enjoy things that fight me but work well once you've mastered the mechanics (i drive a stick rather than automatic, so take what i say with a grain of salt lol). the main difference to me seems that P3P and even modded FES lean towards a well rounded party where you can rely on other characters to support the MC, much like P4 and P5 BUT FES is more of a showing in how strong you can be to lead the party. there are quite a few situations in FES where your best bet is going it alone and outright leaving your party members, which can be off putting to some players. i won't spoil too much here, but it's possible this was an intentional design choice given the themes of the game and its ending, even the inception of the MC makes him special and stronger, so i didn't mind this role. i also see the other side with this being a burden though, as it does seem counter-intuitive to have, let's say, a character who is proficient in physical attacks and fire ;) who is less reliable than separate personas like Surt and Su'sanoo for the MC which fulfill those roles. like i mentioned earlier, it can sort of make your party obsolete, which goes against one of the main gameplay mechanics of having a team lol.
FES requires solid resource management, both in and out of combat. in combat, since there is no SP restoration like newer games unless you return to the base floor of Tartarus (which has the drawback of instantly sending home tired or sick party members), there will be times when all you have is your items to bring your resources back without calling it a day (where it's arguably better to just rest up until you get to Good condition, especially on Hard difficulty), but you only have a few more floors to go before your checkpoint/objective. this was largely done away with in later versions, and i think there's good reason for its exclusion. i still enjoy the need to be optimal with time usage, but it's also arguable that once you get the hang of it, it just stands in the way of the player behaving as they really want to. regarding outside of combat, each block of the story is locked behind the in game calendar so there will be times where (in FES) you pretty much have nothing to do, especially in end game. this can again ruin immersion. while beginning and mid game can slightly remedy this with Social Links, without jobs, all you do is dungeon for a few days, social link, and story fights (wash, rinse, repeat). P4 remedied this by adding in jobs you can do, and raising stats is important, but not really that important if you don't like the specific link (Fuuka/Courage, Mitsuru/Knowledge, Tanaka/Charm, etc). however, if you want the strongest personas (which i'd argue are necessary on Hard), you will have a slight variation in gaining stats which makes the game fun again. (i think you then run into the issue of why not go for all Max S Links, but then you basically have to follow a guide to the letter or you're sooo fucked lol).
I didn't know persona 3 had different versions and I played the portable version on switch and hated it. Not being able to walk around during daytime threw me off

Only reason to play P3P is for the FemC route or if its the only version you can play. Reload's better but so is FES. If you really need direct commands use a modded iso on a emulator or use a cheat code on emulator or cheat device like a gameshark.
