Skunk Baxter would be proud. As a drummer of 40 years, played this song hundreds of times, this may be the best guitar cover I've heard. Well done sir.
Holy crap, if I was in your neighborhood Alden, I'd wanna be in your band. Nice to see some young people sharing the love for this amazing music, excellent job.
Easily the best cover on YT. Saw some kids do this at Berkley. They were greay and the guitarist was good but this is better. Literally note for note and the timing as well as all the inflections are perfect.
Bad ass. That’s dripping with groove. That’s what you try to explain to people about vibe, groove, swagger, balls but sometimes (actually every time) it’s better to just show them. This is a perfect video to have on the screen during a lecture on playing guitar for the purpose of being cooler than anyone else because of that groove. As Steve Lukather said “if it doesn’t groove, it sucks.” Nothing about this track or your performance sucks. It’s the reason people play the guitar in the first place and anyone with any questions should watch this. It they are still scratching their heads, they don’t deserve to understand why playing guitar the right way is the coolest thing a person can do. When guys hear this kind of playing they want to learn and when girls hear this kind of playing they want to get to know you. I promise you that Jeff “skunk” Baxter, despite doing everything he could to appear as creepy as possible, even by 1970s standards, with that goofy mustache and beret, had to hire security to keep the girls from tearing him apart after playing this tune? Thanks for schooling those who were formerly not convinced that playing the guitar was the best decision they have ever made and will ever make o
@@aldeniw you deserve it my man. Great version and great facility on the instrument. Not sure how old you are but I suspect you are still fairly young and that means you will only get better. Point is you already play great and have great taste which means you development on the instrument will be limitless. Take care and keep on playing as if your life depends on it
For the few who might not know: the great Jeff “Skunk” Baxter was the soloist on this track. I don’t listen to much loud rock guitar any more, but I’m always happy to hear Skunk.
@@aldeniw Yeah, there’s no question that those first three albums wouldn’t have been the same without his contributions. On the later albums, of course, he wasn’t there, so Larry Carlton was the bigger influence then. Come to think of it, you can almost divide SD’s output into the “Skunk Baxter years” and the “Larry Carlton years.”
Beautifully done! Believe it or not many years ago I actually played the guitar Skunk used for this solo,. It actually belonged to June Millington, and Skunk, who was an ace repairman at Valley Sound before Steely Dan hit, borrowed the Les Paul from his former client June for this session because he’d worked on the instrument & was very fond of it. I ended up playing it at an after hours jam at a Hollywood club where June was playing with a friend of mine, I didn’t find any of this out until AFTER I’d played it for a bit, but I remember thinking at the time, “This is the best guitar I’ve ever played in my life-it’s playing itself!”
Wow---this is one of my favorite guitar parts from one of my favorite bands ever, a track I've been listening to since 1974, and you totally nail it, brother. Unlike so many on YT who attempt but fail miserably in this arena, you get the sound, the chops, and all the nuances of the chord voicings, which, given its complexity, is no small feat. I don't know what else you're into an up to, but you have this man's attention. Aces.
Awesome man! Hello from a Dan fan in New Zealand! I met Skunk once, in Sydney Australia, 1990. Nice guy. One of my fav guitarists ever. You did him proud bro!
Jeff "Skunk" Baxter would be very proud if he heard this cover of his guitar work on the Dan track. Incredible replication of a wild and abrasive solo that Baxter specialized in when with Dan, Doobies and during the era. Great playing.....
OK. Totally AAAA+++× nailed it.... please let the ol' man talk a moment.... back in the olden days,,,,, my times with Doobies and Van Halen, Steve Morse, jazz wizards Allan Holdsworth etc etc... yes i know the craft.... i know this song.... live Skunk Baxter especially on this gem... HEY YOU, GOT TALENT, NEVER GIVE UP. ----- thanks, Randall
Hi Alden, I LOVE your transcription! It appears to not only have the guitar part, but maybe some of the keyboard and bass lines as well? It's perfect and you execution is on point! Is your transcription by chance available for purchase or to be shared? Thanks!
Again. Nice! You will learn more complex playing by learning SD leads. Best session guys on Earth plus Walter. Try using little finger more. Will take some pressure off to work full-length of fretboard. While giving you more time to smooth end notes. Look fwd to more of your posts. Cheers. Bob
Thanks! I didn’t do a written transcription. I rarely do them since my music school days ended. In my case, and many others, ‘transcription’ refers not necessarily to physically writing down the notes, but the act of learning a piece of music by ear and performing it accurately.
@@aldeniw Thanks for the reply, I've always wanted to learn this song. I find Skunk's style epic, I think I can probably get this down just from watching you, but I'm lazy so I was hoping you had a tab. LOL Cheers

Give the drummer some
Great job! Maybe my favorite SD song.
In the wake of Skunk, a tall order if I ever saw one, and yet you sailed through this with awesome panache. Kudos from my heart.

Hey thanks a lot! That’s super kind! Just playing songs by my favorite band ever and trying to do them justice
@@aldeniw surely u get a major Steely tribute gig. $$
This is great. Steely Dan is known more for their jazzy rock but you won’t hear this in the elevator!
i don't know how many times i have come back here - still blown away every single time - fantastic cover!
Outstanding, Alden!
This just made my day. So perfect
A criminally under-rated Dan song. Great job... beautifully done @2:01-2:08... sweet!
Probably my favorite SD song and after 40 years as a fan and seeing them four times it’s hard to pick a favorite!
Killed it. My favorite Dan song.
That’s AMAZING !…AWSOME 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Greetings from Steely Hank in Australia..

Thanks very much! I tried to nail all of the details, aside from the flub at the end of the main solo 😛
This is a great song that you hardly ever hear. If you transcribed this on your own that is hard to do. Now I have to learn it.
AGREED
Awesome
The best steely dan cover on youtube
nice playing dude smooth!
Excellent display of tone and dynamics….In the pocket bro, luv that tune😎!!!
Great watch. Thanks for sharing
That was incredible. Delightful, delectable, delicious. 10/10 well done 👍

You really have a feel for the Steely Dan guitar
I really enjoyed seeing one of my favorite guitar solos by them performed. Well done you.

I would argue Skunk was as important to the SD sound, possibly more, than Carlton. Skunk had a more esoteric range of style, at the very least.

Yeah I was thinking this has to be the Skunk, thanks for confirming 👍. What a feel and those double stop slides, he's a master class guitarist.

Settings too make such a difference. Most of these guys fail to tell us so we can't even try to emulate them.
I’m afraid I don’t understand your comment! Thanks for watching 👍
