- Japan is known for their theatric and large concerts. But on New Year's Eve, 1997, the legendary X Japan would perform their last.
The Last Live is denoted as the end to one of Japan's most legendary bands, and after it, a tragedy would occur which would lead to an end to a great era of music for Japan. I've been a fan of X since 2019 and this video was always in my head to make.

I really didn't know anything about X japan but you made me love Hide and cry. Excellent video!
Watch the documentary called "We are X" it was put together by Yoshiki himself. I'm not as versed in Japanese as I used to be, but music is truly universal; and this band is still one of my favorites street finding then back in the late 90's.
*from back in the late 90's." Stupid auto correct. 😂
I learned about X Japan from listening to Paul Gilbert interviews. He calls X Japan one of his big influences. Such an amazing band.
That's cool!
Can you link an interview where he talks about them? I'm a fan of X Japan and Paul Gilbert and all I can find when searching is videos of Racer X playing in Japan.
X Japan is that one big band from the 80s/90s that many if not most of the currently active or younger Japanese metal & rock bands look up to.
¡ Seikima II is the end all and be all of Japanese Metal bands to make its mark on the 80's & 90's ! Enough said.
@Lunatic4Bizcas
Seikima II is great too.
But LOL, nope.
@@iqbalmuhammad2920tbh seikima ii is better than X japan. At least in Terms of vocals definitely. And songwriters are more Creative and have better technique
@@Lunatic4Bizcas seikima wasnt the one to literally invent vkei tho
@noireOphelia727 : Agreed, which is why my comment was directed at those whose premise is that X Japan was the greatest or most pivotal Japanese Metal band of the 80's/90's. I just simply wrote that statement to correct the record in my view.
I'm from Indonesia. Thank you so much for such a full complete & thorough video documentary about X Japan, which is probably one of the greatest bands in Japan. Deeply appreciated!
Great video! I didn't know much about X Japan and I learned a lot; time to do a deep dive on their albums!
Thank you for this video! It’s such an amazing video!! My fondest memory of X Japan is when I seen them at Coachella in 2018. Keep in mind Beyoncé was playing at the same time and I remember less than 100 of us were watching this iconic band.
Bro I found my people! X Japan - Say Anything (the video is now very toasty on UA-cam) makes me cry, takes me back to finding them in like 2005 when I was musically finding my way. This is a top tier video
Thank you for this video; it made me very emotional and I’m not even an X fan. My admiration for them grew, with this video.
And yes, I’ll take a video about Merceilles L’escape.
Subscribed.
Thank you so much for making this video, I'm literally crying rn❤
Rip Hide
Thank you for this video. I want to see more X Japan videos from others. I’ve been writing an X Japan iceberg script for the past month and this inspired me to go work on it.
I didn't really see what is the controversial aspect of the last live concert, maybe "the history of X Japan" would be the better title for the video
Exactly. I was reading about it in Google to find out what happened instead of watching the whole video and there's nothing controversial about it. Wrong title.
It's just a clickbait to draw people in.
X japan was really the greatest i still listen to kurenai and endless rain..
IV was my introduction to X Japan. In the music video there is a guitar left standing, a tribute to Hide. At the time I did not know much about the band but that song is so powerful. I cannot wait to listen to the rest this amazing band offered to the world. Thank you for this video.
I really enjoyed this video. great work.
This documentary is fantastic, dude.
I know very little about X Japan other than the tune they had in Rock Band, and I was absolutely glued to this from start to finish.
You're a great storyteller, and your passion for the band really shines through!
Now I've gotta go do my part and listen to a shitload of X Japan for the foreseeable hahaha
thanks brother
nothing controversial thing on x japan's live, the title just clickbait where the narrator tells you a a history of the band for a full hour lol
hey it baited me but it's a great video.
thanks for sharing this with us. Have a great day man
Been a fan for a while now despite being from the US. Great work :)
Wonderful video that captures the layered elements and drama of one of the greatest bands to ever exist. Please make more content about X. My greatest influence and such an important and significant band.
I play in a jrock/jmetal band and we all look up to X Japan
Seikima II is the only Japanese Metal band to truly make an indelible mark on 80s/90's Japanese Heavy Metal; thus the only one deserving adulation.
@@Lunatic4Bizcas You've been posting this under a few comments and I have to say, your enthusiasm is commendable...
Even if your statement is egregiously, demonstrably false. lol
Why can there only be one? And why is this a hill worth dying on?
@@LordZama : Basically, in my view, it's a hill worth dying on, because Seikima II never got the recognition in the west that it should have while all the rage over 'J-Rock/Japanese Metal' in the late 80's and early to mid 90's was focused on 'X Japan,' During this time, Seikima II should have at least got mention in the same way that 'Iron Maiden & Judas Priest' would often get mention in U.S press. In my view Seikima II was every bit as influential to Japanese Metal if not more so than X Japan was. The musicians that Seikima counted on were every bit just as talented if not more so than those from X Japan, plus Demon Kogure was a much better vocalist and showman (If that counts for anything ) than was Toshi.
that's cool as hell
@@LordZama
He did it under my comment too! LOL.
I have never heard of them before. And i've literally went and hear the whole song "Art of Life" because of this video and i had huge feelings in the end. Seeing all the emotion going through the Last Live. Amazing documentary! Thanks for making me add more songs in my list!
The title of your video is MISLEADING
Your mother
he knows that already lol
Great video. I was obsessed with X Japan when I delve into JApanese MEtal rock / Visual Kei back in the mid 2000. Art of life and the last the last live are some of the ebst live cocnert you will see on this earth. Malice Mizer is my favorite VK Band for obvious reasons and ill be waiting on your Merveille Live video if you ever do one. Its probably the greatest live concert ever recorder and I argue that Merveille is probably one of the best album ever written in music.
Beautiful job with this~ Love this band and I'm so happy to see content based on it. Thank you for this video, the effort really shined.
Excellent video my friend, just excellent ^_^
Arigato as I bow to you for making this vid. X Japan is the greatest act that ever came out of Japan. 🤘❤🤘
It is a nice video, but as a few people said, the title in the video is very misleading. Sure the breakup of X Japan is shocking and somewhat controversial, but not The Last Live itself.
The video's title should've been called "The Emotional History of X Japan" or "Japan's Most Bittersweet Concert".
And let's be real, Japan's actual most controversial concert is the Bulldozer Incident by Hanatarash from 1985.
such a well made video, made me cry
looking forward to more from you man great work
no.634 dont call me a mf
thank you yoshiki, very cool!
Seems that “Final Live” was eerily prophetic to the members’ lives. Very sad story.
Thank you very much for the content mthrfkkr. I really enjoyed the entire hour.
What a great video, it's been a long time since someone was missing making a chronology of this level of detail with exact dates and names of those live. because they always have errors in the dates. I have been a fan since 2004 when X Japan was a memory, I was lucky enough to see them live in 2011 in Chile. It is full of reactions from the last live on UA-cam but none of them capture the context. thank you, thank you very much. I hope to see some video from hide or boowy at some point. long life X freaks.
So.. what makes this concert controversial? It's clearly a well executed show imo.
I'm just so sad everything has to end eventually. This was the best era of my life. I have such great memories of them. And they will always remain.
I watched this video till the end. I dont know this band nor do i know a lot of japanese bands. But storyteling had me on the edge, i like few of the songs mentioned here❤❤❤
Very well done Sir, chapeau 🎩Take care of yourself, January is a hard month to get through. - I wish you a serene and healthy New Year. From Germany with respect and love ❣
Great video dude! Hope you do some more music documentaries
I thought either Yoshiki or Toshi were the candidates for you know what... But it turned out that Hide was struggling with something internally, how unfortunate. That was a surprise to me, I've heard a couple of their songs, but I didn't know about their history.
@@arsenblackwell why would they though
Not controversial at all but sad and quite painful, considering the events around the band.
And I recently found out Heath passed away in 2023. Damn, this SUCKS!!!
Legend! I was so sad when they broke up, that was also when I finish high school and went separate ways with my friends......
ENDLESS DREAM was actually released on a demotape called ENDLESS DREAM back in 1985! It has 4 tracks
The narration is great as it is-no need for the overly dramatic voice-over.
*gaddayum the emotional values of bands before social media took off*
title is so clickbait but yeah long live X-Japan! Forever love Hide!
The fire extinguisher is an old stunt, Yoshiki did the same thing in their early concerts.
I love x japan so much. I still don't know why they aren't as famous internationally as kiss or Metallica
Language barrier, the band breaking up during their prime, Hide's death and Toshi's being brainwashed. The band was supposes to reunite in '00 without Toshi (possibly with Hide doing vocals or someone else).
@@ECW5320 Toshi's being braindwashed by who?
@mohd.ashaarishaharuzzaman8594 Toshi was being brainwashed by a cult (Home Of The Heart), that's why the band broke up (there was a press conference about band's tenure ending). He initially lied about it and said he was tired of the rockstar life, but everyone knew the real reason because the rumors were going around.
It wasn't until he broke free of the cult that he revealed what he went through during this 10 years.
@@ECW5320 i know why they weren't popular overseas, I didn't mean the 'i don't know' part seriously. I've watched the documentary
18:00 Hide actually intended to use drain for his solo career from the start. Scars was also a song he intended for his solo career.
Fairly decent video, well edited, especially for someone new! Just a little suggestion, even if English is not your first language, you should try to talk with more energy, not caring for your accent! Also, don't use clickbait titles "Birth and demise of Japan biggest rock band" would work just fine!
Thank you for such a wonderful video of X Japan. I've been listening to them for three decades, watching this video brings back a lot of memories.
Looking forward to your video about Malice Mizer btw, another god tier legendary band I have been loving for decades (yep, I'm pretty old :P )
"HIDE" looks like he could care less if he was there or not it's just his look I guess. It was good to see he did smile from time to time !!!.
I loved LOUDNESS back in the day...hell still do.
Now i have a new /old Band from Japan to check out now!!!
Really did not think this video was going to be about x japan
This is a good video 👍
I used to listen to them like 20 years ago lol, this is bringing some shit back up! wow.
I'd rather say that X Japan's breakup was shocking and controversial, but not The Last Live itself. The announcement of their disbandment was already made (on September 22, 1997) before the concert took place.
Also, Yoshiki somehow got hide's birth year wrong on The Last Live DVD (1964 not 1963)...
I just love how this is exactly an hour long
(well, with 8 seconds, but we ignore that)
WTF? This is a clickbait title!
I really hope this video puts you on the map, cause it was so well done. Excellent work 🫡
what an amazing documentary
I keept waiting for the controversial part but naver came.. you got me with that trash clickbait, good job.
X is still celebrated, but we cannot forget about Dead End, D'erlanger, and Gastunk as well. Almost all bands who came after them cite one or more as an influence.
Absolute banger of a video mate, got me hooked up to a band I'd never heard before. You're awesome at this!
Instantly knew it was x japan from the thumbnail
Timeless. X. Japan❤
Couldn't listen, his voice is soo anyoing.
Yes!
No mention of Randy Uchida of GiSM and Randy Uchida Band?? He was for sure a pioneer of V-K
What an annoying slow commentary
I'm saving finding out more bout this scene from a less annoying source.
The video is well constructed but please stop eating the microphone, it's compressed as hell and while I understand the dramatic type of narration, it sounds cringe as it's not really well executed especially in conjunction with the microphone eating, put some distance so the voice can breathe, like damn
I had a blast with your highlights. I got emotional many times 🥲 this concert is super sad
Your video editing choices for the songs were smart. Keep the good work, I hope to see more visual kei content!
(I can’t believe that era Yoshiki is the same guy who hangs out with elon and trump nowadays)
Is it not just that one award show when Yoshiki bumped to Elon?
@@lll.24601 yoshiki is Melania trump music teacher, both posted on their stories some time ago
The moment when banging the drum afther they played dahlia
Do you know the history of Pay money to my pain? I'm slightly confused by what happened and what direction they went after the lead singer , K passed away.
After Taiji left all went south.
Anyway RIP to hide, Taiji and Heath
ONE HOUR… HO MY GOD
X japan was a game changing band like malice mizère...w/o them the japan j-rock would not even happened...rock n roll hall of fame please!!!!

Why you speak like that bro?
What's wrong?

Not controversial at all.
As someone previously acquainted with X Japan, or after watching this video?
Can you do a documentary on the rise and fall of the Japanese shoegaze band “Supercar”?.
THE LEGENDARY X JAPAN
PATA 🗣🔥
I can smell out these x Japan videos
My favourite.. ❤From India 🇮🇳
a similar video about number girl will be cool
Ever heard of Hanatarash?
I love this documentary-style videos! It gives me a deep look into a band, I somewhat knew about and now I feel I need to know more about them.
While I was in high school, I was playing bass for a local metal band, as they saw my skill as being better than most of the other bass players there, and it was at that point I met a lot of my fellow band members. Daniel Walker, I believe was the one who introduced me to Japanese Metal and the first few bands I got into were Maximum The Hormone and Dir En Grey. It was music that felt different to what bands had already inspired me to play bass such as Korn, Slayer, and Job For A Cowoby.
Korn's Fieldy is who got me into playing bass because his style of bass playing felt so much different compared to most bass players and his sound was even unique! Tom Araya of Slayer was my inspiration of doing vocals while playing bass, as I had a knack for writing lyrics and overall, understanding things from a different perspective. As for Job For A Cowboy? Brent Riggs was the inspiration for me learning how to play Death metal and Deathcore.
Wanting to play bass and all while wanting to be somebody I would practice 5-8 hours a day, just to increase my skill level and have an understanding of what I wanted to do with my life. Sadly, this would all come to an end during my sophomore year of high school, as even though we were set to drop an album and the first two tracks had already been done, I was getting more and more into trouble and losing focus on my school grades, as my attention was more focused on music, and not caring about school at all.
My father would then end up taking away my Ibanez bass, and putting it away, until my grades got better. It was at this point I had to use someone else's bass, but regardless I was kicked from the band and replaced. Afterwards life only got more depressing, as I had lost my reason to live and after this, my girlfriend would end up leaving me, as her single mother could no longer afford the housing anymore.
After that life took a downward spiral and it had changed me into someone I didn't like, but at the same time I did not care either, as life had no meaning, and I had lost all my purpose. I did end up graduating and getting my diploma, but none of that mattered, as I would end up working landscaping and I would live some of the worst days of my life. I never had an interest in landscaping, but due to my father's ignorance and overall, lack of interest towards his family, the name of the game was to earn more money in order to live and I was paying the price for it, all because I had no purpose.
Today marks the 5th or 6th year I've been working at this terrible job, and there has been points to where I've gotten into arguments with people and even points where fights could occur, but I would walk away seeing that I would lose my job and then what? So, in some ways I could understand why the death of this band would upset certain members or why having your passion die out would cause some serious damage to someone's mental health.
Even though I hate my job, I'm still trying to put effort into my passions and goals, as I now do solo music such as Trance, and overall, I do love electronic music and its less stress on me, as I don't have to work with others, nor do I have to find band members for a project. All while making UA-cam anime content and studying to become a programmer so I can make even more money.
Weirdly enough, I only wrote this long essay of a comment because I'm pretty sure any musician or lover of music will feel the same pain, if they were to have their dreams crushed or their passions stripped away from them. My father tells me I should start a family and have kids, but I have no reason to do such a ridiculous thing, especially, when my family lives paycheck to paycheck and I wonder why humans don't like change? Why not do something that'll change the financial struggle and worries of your family, instead of creating the same bogus outcome and the same bogus struggles that everyone has to deal with?
Humans will continue to confuse me for the rest of my life, and what did I learn from my terrible experiences? Humans are inherently shit and only cause problems within their own environment. Again, thanks for this amazing documentary, I will now look into more of X Japan's history through the internet.
X was a great band but they haven’t released a new album since 1996, the new singles are kinda overproduced and bad since Yoshiki really wants to make it in America by forcing Toshi to sing in English. I don’t wanna say it but X is just a nostalgic act now since Hide and Heath are dead.
Rip the nex genX
X-Japan = Yoshiki = Overrated Sometimes...
where can i watch this concert?
What's with the weird whispering voice ?
Clickbait lol
Your accent pmo but…good video
And later they reunited
And then kind of disbanded Again
@A1000-b9s I also heard that they will make memorial concerts for Heath, who died on 2023
@halfgenieboy0610 honestly i doubt toshi would want to do anything with yoshiki Again, i don't know What yoshiki is like in a Normal position or Normal in person but i assume it's Hell and frustrating to work with him, even as his best friend, although idk if yoshiki actually thinks about toshi like that, maybe he would've treated him a bit better if he actually thinks like that.
@A1000-b9s This explains how Toshi wasn't that active these days. He wasn't on Yoshiki's 59th birthday livestream as well but Pata was there
@@halfgenieboy0610(sorry for my bad eng) i mean it was obvious that the two got issues in the 2020s or Something. Also btw idk if yoshiki has no way to talk with toshi or he just wanted the attention but he tweeted with putting TOSHI's name saying "do you want to talk" or Something in japanese (on Twitter) but There was no response and also TOSHI's name (name of his acc) wasn't blue so idk if it means he blocked him or just won't see his recommendations or tweets. I Don't think toshi didn't felt yoshiki and his demands like a friend anymore (although it was like that Before too at times)
Im going to need you to take that microphone out of your mouth. Holy shit.

With it being the 90s… this was pretty much something to see.
Budokan??
Tokyo Dome
@ sure but I believe he pronounces budokan as “budohan” on 11:10 and some other moments
lol trigger warning
I'm wondering if this is new to only me? In which case there was timeline jumps....I mean I know the U.S.A tends to live in a musical bubble, but I'm shocked that I've never even heard of the name in passing, not once. I'm definitely a music guy. How is this possible? If I were a finger pointer, I'd say something like, "they were not good. It was a Japan thing."
