Dale Sr. and Gordon fans were the only ones that hated each other. Dale and Jeff had massive respect for each other but they were just 2 completely different personalities so people just wanted to separate them that way.
It was all about the $$$ and Dale was smart enough to see and realize that and guess what…it worked…more merchandise was sold bc of it and more $$$$ was made bc of it
Jeff did talk about Dale Sr talking to him about how they both could make money by being sponsored by opposing brands- Like Sr with Coke & Jeff with Pepsi… Edit: they played up the on track rivalry & it worked!
They might've had a couple run-ins with each other on the track, (like one time where Dale intentionally wrecked Jeff at Pocono or Martinsville, I think, and when they had their run-in in the '97 500) but yes, they usually had a lot of respect for each other. Those Earnhardt fans though, they're something else. Only people I can think are more toxic are the Disney Cultists and Family Guy Cultists.
Dale Jr's dad would be sooo proud of his son today. Not just for his racing (that too) but because what Dale Jr. does for this sport. His insight, influence and programs like this too. Great stories of the hay days past, his interest in forgotten speedways - that series was amazing - and almost anything Dale does that involves the sport and his passion for it just adds to the interest and enthusiasm for the fans. As always, Dale thanks for doing this on our behalf...
Lucky - Dale would say this : "Hell - I set everything up for him - if it wasn't for his sister he'd be pushing a broom for Jeremy Mayfield - " Now that may be a little harsh but it's funny - And it's sounds like something the Old Man would've said - Hell he cussed me like a dog when I was a 19yr old kid !
Im sure we'd hear amazing stories if Sr was here today, and I could see Sr making that half cocked grin on his face. I was a Jeff fan but respected Sr.
Dale Earnhardt owned an apparel company called Sports Image and he saw Gordon coming.. He signed Jeff for his merchandising contract.. That’s why there always seemed to be a feud between the 3 and 24 even though they truly were friends and liked each other.. Plain and simple.. To sell t-shirts.. Dale Earnhardt was not only an incredible driver.. He was extremely smart.. I was fortunate enough to get to goto DEI just after they built the big shop.. They talked about this during the tour after Dale was killed.. He designed the layout of DEI.. A truly incredible man and terrible loss in so many ways..
I tried to tell everyone how Dale and Jeff were actually manufacturer teammates before manufacturer teammates were a thing. Only a few people really even knew they were friends and Dale even helped Jeff with his branding.

remember hearing someone say that Dale Sr and Jeff had sold t shirts that basically said Dalr sr/ Jeff sucks and they sold em at their trailers but they were the ones that printed em up and split the $$$$. They were like the pro wrestling Heel vs face. they knew how to work the crowd.....
“Got lucky surrounded by great people” think the love of racing taking it all in seeing big picture having a great racing mind you either have it or you don’t. Ray is good for racing and a mentor to many. Nice interview
As he said about Rick Hendrick wanting him as crew chief......great people found him. Ray is humble but fact is luck may get you in the door but luck doesn't make you good at your job or proffesion.
The stories about Dale Sr never get old. Especially coming from such a talent as Ray. I watched him drive a winged sprint at Friendship years ago and he was a wheel man. He came from the back to win his heat and then the main.
Great pointers on leadership and positions of authority. About standing up to Dale Sr, his reply was logical and truthful, which is the way that those types of conversations need to be handled.
“ when you grow up in the Penske organization, you are learning things that you don’t even know you’re learning…” what a true statement. I watched the mechanics on his teams for years and it was evident even as a spectator. I tell a story about leadership and culture that I saw happen between two IndyCar mechanics 30 years ago, to this day. Great interview. 🏁
I have heard this story before, from Andy Petree when he was on the download, saying he and Ray were on the same channel during races and acted as 'secret' teammates. Dale Jr must have forgotten hearing that story before.
No Andy didn't take it that far. He said they talked every Monday morning and traded notes. He said if Dale or Childress had known he would have been fired. He was employed by RCR when he did the show and said that it would probaly still piss Childress off. It wasn't an alliance between the teams, it was a partnership between the two friends. There was respect but everyone wanted to win.
Sometime in the mid 90s I guess I went to the Richard petty driving experience, Right down the road was Hendrick motor sports. They had an open door so you were able tour the facility. About halfway through the tour I see Evernham walking down some stairs, he looks at me and makes a beeline. Stops in front of me and says, “You’re wearing a Bill Elliott shirt at Hendrick motor sports” you know we have a gift shop right? And kinda smiles, I said well, I like Bill Elliott, he looks at me and says, so do I, Bills a great guy then proceeds to take a picture with me, lol. The guy was super cool and of course a couple years later started his own team with Elliott as his driver. I thought that was pretty cool. Been an Evernham fan since that day….
This is a good one.... And I kinda noticed that unofficial teammate thing earlier watching the 97 Winston 500. Few times skinner in the 31 car didn't go with Dale in the 3 but the 24 was with the 3.
I was working at Hendrick doing electrical work on Gordons first shop. I was standing there with Ray and my boss when some race fans walked up with their little boy looking to get an autograph from someone. My boss told Ray to sign his toy car. Ray said " Im nobody" and kinda blushed. He signed the toy car. At the time I didnt even know who Ray was . I had watched the IROC series but didnt know Ray was responsible for setting up all those cars.
I think Tony Stewart’s first year, might have a been a night race, the 24 caught up to him, made him a little loose and the 20 slipped up to the outside line, Jeff passed him , but Sr was in the outside line a few lengths behind and made Tony loose and sent him on to the wall. It was just funny that neither apparently wanted to deal with the rookie that day, and Jeff just passed him up to Dale to put him into the wall.
And what a great story about Mr H insisting to Ray that he was going to crew chief. That’s what great leaders can see and can do for people even if they don’t know they can do it.
“There was no way to win that championship other than go though that 3 car.” Remember that time you got beat by a one armed man in a backup car at Phoenix in 1996? Terry Labonte #5.
Ray brought up Gil Hearne, I promise you this. You could go to every race track for the next 1000 years and still not meet a nicer man than Gil Hearne.
Maybe I have a different outlook on things if I am Terry Labonte crew and I hear Evernham helping Richard, children’s and Earnhardt before them I would be pissed if he would’ve helped his crew he might’ve been 3 time championship instead of 2.
Big fan, but Dale always starts a question and then doesn't seem to know how to end it, it wanders in different directions until it runs out of steam. Less words from the host is good
Dale's show is the best thing to happen to NASCAR in a long, long time.
Dale Sr. and Gordon fans were the only ones that hated each other. Dale and Jeff had massive respect for each other but they were just 2 completely different personalities so people just wanted to separate them that way.
We still do 😂
It was all about the $$$ and Dale was smart enough to see and realize that and guess what…it worked…more merchandise was sold bc of it and more $$$$ was made bc of it
Jeff did talk about Dale Sr talking to him about how they both could make money by being sponsored by opposing brands- Like Sr with Coke & Jeff with Pepsi…
Edit: they played up the on track rivalry & it worked!
Dale Sr & Rusty fans didn’t like each other either
They might've had a couple run-ins with each other on the track, (like one time where Dale intentionally wrecked Jeff at Pocono or Martinsville, I think, and when they had their run-in in the '97 500) but yes, they usually had a lot of respect for each other. Makes sense especially with how much respect Dale had for Jeff. I'm sure things went on behind the scenes many aren't aware of.
Im sure we'd hear amazing stories if Sr was here today, and I could see Sr making that half cocked grin on his face.
I was a Jeff fan but respected Sr.
I love this stuff. There's some great stories. Dale Jr. does it best.
Stories of Dale Sr. Just make me misty eyes Every time in a good way though! Thank you

That's some great stuff right there. From when Cup racing was still fun to watch.
As a fellow Jersey boy, I always loved and respected Ray. The man is a racing legend.
I really enjoy Dale Jr’s podcasts. So many good stories from back when nascar was good.
another great show. who wasn't smiling while listening to these stories
I tried to tell everyone how Dale and Jeff were actually manufacturer teammates before manufacturer teammates were a thing. Only a few people really even knew they were friends and Dale even helped Jeff with his branding.
And it's snowing in the Bahamas! 😂😂😂
@@richardchristman8913 with the state of the world, i could honestly believe that. Probably the bad snow though? Amirite?

Love Ray’s conversations. He changed NASCAR with the Rainbow Warriors, kept notes on everything, was dedicated to learn to win.
“Got lucky surrounded by great people” think the love of racing taking it all in seeing big picture having a great racing mind you either have it or you don’t. Ray is good for racing and a mentor to many. Nice interview

Just imagine if Dale Sr was still here, and he could come onto Dale Jr’s show, and they could swap stories with each other. Priceless!!!
Love hearing new Dale Sr. Stories. Great show as always.
There is more gold in this discussion than anything I’ve seen about nascar in years. Awesome.
The stories about Dale Sr never get old. Especially coming from such a talent as Ray. I watched him drive a winged sprint at Friendship years ago and he was a wheel man. He came from the back to win his heat and then the main.
Always love these stories.
Ray was a damn good Crew Chief
Great pointers on leadership and positions of authority. About standing up to Dale Sr, his reply was logical and truthful, which is the way that those types of conversations need to be handled.

I love this. this when racers were racers, talked things out between themselves.
Truly enjoy your show!!!
I have heard this story before, from Andy Petree when he was on the download, saying he and Ray were on the same channel during races and acted as 'secret' teammates. Dale Jr must have forgotten hearing that story before.
I’m also pretty sure Andy mentioned the shocks too

A lot of wisdom in this clip

Ray you were the best or in the top ten hands down just like jr. Says ❤❤❤ And you had the best Jeff Gordon ❤❤
Fake it till you make it. And Ray, you ARE ONE OF THE BEST 👌 GREAT SHOW JUNEBUG.
Those are some good stories.
Great stories, always had mad respect for Ray! Great to see Dale rocking the IROC hat!
great old stories
Ray absolutely proved he knew what he was doing, and the TRex was the cherry on top.
That car was a maniac machine ! It ate everyone’s lunch and growled as it screamed past them.
That’s some cool stuff right there 👍
Great story
This is a good one.... And I kinda noticed that unofficial teammate thing earlier watching the 97 Winston 500. Few times skinner in the 31 car didn't go with Dale in the 3 but the 24 was with the 3.
Yeah skinner and Earnhardt were hardly teammates. They had the same boss but that's was it.
That was an awesome story.
You know growing up and watching Nascar in the stands you have to love these Stories. You would never know
I was working at Hendrick doing electrical work on Gordons first shop. I was standing there with Ray and my boss when some race fans walked up with their little boy looking to get an autograph from someone. My boss told Ray to sign his toy car. Who ever that little boy was he has Ray Evernhams first autograph
Good stuff!

No interruptions by Mike Davis has been so nice this year. Let Dale Jr. ask the questions and let his guests answer without interruptions.
Definitely!!!!!
Right there with you
Solid gold. This would be lost if not for Jr's work.
Wow
Exceptional opening question Dale !
Good video
Wow what a great interview loved it🤩🤩🤩🤩😘😘😘
And what a great story about Mr H insisting to Ray that he was going to crew chief. That’s what great leaders can see and can do for people even if they don’t know they can do it.
I love how Richard Childress was the "Moderator" for Big E and Ray.
Great stories ! I really enjoy this channel !
That is what is missing in Nascar today. Hero's and rivalrys
Respect .
Wow got this one early!
Listening to all these guys talk about NASCAR in the past is awesome. Too bad they can’t recapture the essence of what those guys did back then.
I so wish we could hear Big E's side of these backstories
Love it!! That’s the only job we got!!!!!!
What a lesson on human nature.
What happened to the old studio?
Lights were 1000% better
All this stuff happening while I was a clueless kid 🤯
He raced Flemington, NJ? I grew up watching modifieds at Wll Stadium and only went to Flemington once. Cool.
Man do I miss this era of nascar
Wow as hard that is to believe about the 24 and 3 being teammates I believe it
“There was no way to win that championship other than go though that 3 car.” Remember that time you got beat by a one armed man in a backup car at Phoenix in 1996? Terry Labonte #5.
One of the greatest crew chiefs ever
I think Jeff would have gotten 7 titles if Ray would have stayed with him. He already would have had 2 more without the chase format.
And they hadnt changed to the chase format
Sr. Seen something in Gordon that nobody else seen. Sr. Was actually secretively mentoring Gordon
One time a Gordon tire changer was on Dales pit crew for a stop.
Tell him ray 😂😂😂
I love these talks but man Dale, 2.5 min to finish asking the question? lol
Wow the first question from JR took 2:20
No way Rick Hendrick knew he built shocks for Earnhardt...LOL.
Ray brought up Gil Hearne, I promise you this. You could go to every race track for the next 1000 years and still not meet a nicer man than Gil Hearne.
I don't dislike everham as much as i used to
Was Ray part of Alan's 92 championship?
He's on something
Where's Mike at?
He is doing more office work. He stepped away from being the sidekick.
I thought that was Steve-O in the thumbnail. 😅
Maybe I have a different outlook on things if I am Terry Labonte crew and I hear Evernham helping Richard, children’s and Earnhardt before them I would be pissed if he would’ve helped his crew he might’ve been 3 time championship instead of 2.
Tell Amy I said hi 👋 😘😘😘😘
Maybe Dale got out of there quick so he didn't have to deal with Ray, knowing why Ray was mad.
That, we'll never know.
Is Mike not with the podcast anymore?
He behind the scenes...
He stepped aside to work in the office more.
Dale ask the question please.
How about radioactive piston’s components????lol cats out now!!!!
Haven’t watched this podcast in awhile. The new room they’re in looks terrible, old studio was much more authentic
Where the heck is Mike?
Jfc...a two minute question. Let him answer
Did Dale finally fire the lackey who was always on the show with him?
The corruptlons of the Dupont company paid the officiaIs good money.
Big fan, but Dale always starts a question and then doesn't seem to know how to end it, it wanders in different directions until it runs out of steam. Less words from the host is good
it should not take over 2 minutes to ask 1 question.
Get to tge question JR
Denny beat off your favorite driver!!!!
Ray is full of himself
