I remember the day very well, when I first heard this song.I was at my girlfriend's home, she already had gone to bed, and I was watching MTV, when "Alive" was presented as a premiere. Never before and never again I had a moment like this with a song, with a band. I was listening to Rock and Metal stuff these days, liked a lot of bands, but never really got into one too deep. But when the guitar started the intro of "Alive", I was instantly hooked. And when Eddie startet singing, I was a fan after not even one minute. It was like I listened to something I had always wanted to hear, I just not had known until this moment... I wrote the name Pearl Jam down and went to the local record store the next day, but they told me, in Germany the album would come out some weeks later. But I couldn't wait. THey told me, I could get an import from the US earlier, but it would be more expensive... I didn't care. So I must be one of the first Germans to posess the "Ten"-album. I was a little fucked up, when the European edition appeared, because it had one or two more tracks as bonus ("Dirty Frank" and one more, I think), but I got those songs later on "Lost Dogs". Needless to say, that I am a Pearl-Jam-fan since that first day. It's not only the music, not only the great concerts I've been to, it's also all the stories around that band and especially Eddie as a human, that make them so great.
Great reaction! This is my favorite song of all time. It evokes a physical and emotional reaction from me every time I’ve listened to it. It evokes a longing for hope and redemption in life, no matter how much or how little time we have left.
I remember well the day I came home from the record store with "Ten", because it left a huge mark on my life. I loved them, I love them and I will always love them, Eddie is my shaman.

AW WELL THANK YOU! I'M GLAD YOU'RE ENJOYING THE PEARL JAM REACTIONS! I AM AS WELL. THEY REALLY ARE ONE OF MY FAVORITE BANDS I'VE DISCOVERED ON THIS CHANNEL AND IT'S ALL BECAUSE OF YOU GUYS TELLING ME ABOUT THEM! 💛
Eddie once said in an interview that for a long time singing this song was a curse, but when the audience sang 'I'm still alive' as a way of demonstrating the happiness of being alive, then the curse was broken and he stopped feeling this in music.
I've been listening to this song for years never heard the story behind it before thanks for the video explaining the background behind it. I totally understand what you're saying about not feeling so upbeat about the song considering the meaning behind it so yes good on Eddie for being able to put a positive spin on it thanks to the fans reaction when they would play it .Great reaction Nikki!
Thank you! And yeah, Eddie Vedder seems just like a really chill and genuine guy. I keep getting interview recommendations since I'm doing these songs and I click them when I have the time. He seems like a sweet soul.
Saw them in concert Monday night. They played this, Black, Even Flow, and Porch...no Jeremy. For a bunch of guys in their late 50s, they still get after it!
I recommend oceans from unplugged as well from them, whole unplugged concert is amazing no matter what track u choose, cheers 🍻 n hopefully another day for everyone.
Food for thought, Eddie Vedder first solo album, 2007 “into the wild”, also the movie title. 1983, Violent Femmes, “Violent Femmes”album. 1985, The Dead Milkmen, “ Big Lizard in My Backyard” album. “
You really must react to Pearl Jam's song, "Black," from the Unplugged show. I looked through your page, and I don't see it. You're gonna love it. As usual, your reaction was perfect.
Thank you! And yep, I've already reacted to that one! I don't know if you saw the other person's comment but I'll link it here for you as well in case you didn't! 😊 ua-cam.com/video/SvKcbsLg6Xs/v-deo.html I know it's a bit of a spoiler.. but I haven't heard a bad Pearl Jam song yet! 😜😁
This is THE song that broke them big from their unbelievable debut album, Ten. You absolutely MUST check out the original studio release! It’s SO great.
This was the first CD I ever bought. It took me a long time to switch from vinal and cassette tapes. Lol I loved every song on it. I thought it was extremely dark when I heard it. What a mind fu... To lay on a kid. But like he says he made it through and this song and many others from the grunge era got me through some of the hardest times of my life. Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, and Nirvana to name just a few of them. It was a great time to be a music fan.
That's great that the music helped you out. I think a lot of people can relate to that feeling. 🖤 And I can feel ya on the media switch struggles. For me it was mostly CDs to digital (though the first music I listed to was on cassette). I still burn myself cds from time to time cause I just enjoy it haha. I haven't hopped on the vinyl train myself yet but it seems like that's making quite the comeback!
I'm a Pearl Jam fan so i love this version but the studio version is infinitely better. The studio version is a high energy rocker with a brilliant guitar outro, and is the song that made us all fall in love with Pearl Jam. It is also one of those songs you never get sick of. You need to hear the studio version.
I love, LOVE everything from this MTV unplugged including this song, but I'll say the studio version, for me personally, is about even with this performance... both amazing in their own rights. I just cant for the life of me put anything off the unplugged performance below anything because every song from this performance is unreal.. unreal.
a lesser known pearl jam song with powerful lyrics is 'i got id' also known as 'i got sh*t' ... would also highly recommend the bands Portugal The man and Awolnation they have some very good lyrics
@@nikkireviews yeah they are lesser known but great... they basically have songs for all type of moods... take for example Portugal The man... they have cheerful songs like 'live in the moment' - 'so young' - 'share with me the sun'... but also have songs with darker themes like.. -once was one... -sleep forever ... or -noise pollution.. that one is about a tragedy that happened in france, thats why a couple of lyrics on that one are in french.
One of the first albums I ever got, and I didn't know for years what it was about until one day I sat and really listened to the lyrics and I remember thinking that they don't fit the song but yet they do.
Catch a concert version of this song. The audience understands the meaning but ‘I’m still alive’ is defiant declaration. We have all been hurt down to our soul but it didn’t kill us ‘We are still alive’ despite the tragedies that befall us. There are several interviews when Eddie would discuss this song. He often just lets the crowd handle the chorus. It helped him heal like he helped us deal with the wounds that scar our souls. Grunge was special because they were authentic humans with flaws not Rock Gods above their fans. Pearl Jam & Metallica the fans and bands are family check out Battery by Metallica.
Oh Battery is a good one as well! And yeah, that's what I really like about Pearl Jam is that they DO seem authentic.. and how Eddie sings with such passion and emotion.. every single time. It just really is felt in the music. 💛 I will definitely have to check out another live performance. 😊
as someone from the PNW who has been a fan of PJ since before their first album released, I can wholeheartedly tell you that you are missing out on a giant catalogue of amazing PJ songs, my personal favorite is Wash
You need to check out the studio version. Not the music video. It's good but different from the studio version. Love the solo from the studio version better

I plan on doing just that. I wanna list to them all..and it's been so fun doing it this way and learning along with you guys. People who are already fans of the band and know them the best!
The verse you described implies an incestuous relation between mother and son. He said that's fiction but that her mother used to get lost looking at him probably seeing the similarities between him and his real father.
Maybe it's coincidence or good planning by you. But today is the 33rd anniversary of Ten and 28th of No Code. Alive was the very first single they released
I love your Pearl Jam reactions! About that second verse that you spoke of. It is my understanding that Eddie had a strong physical resemblance to his biological father. So when Eddie's mother says "but, you're still alive" it is because she sees Eddie's father when she looks at Eddie. There seems to be some incestual inuendo, perhaps an attraction to the man she sees when she looks at Eddie. That last part may just be a misinterpretation on my part. It is definitely the darkest and most confusing section of this song for both the singer and the listener to sort out. It boils down to, his father is gone, but he is still alive. Eddie is his own person, yet he is also a reflection of a man he barely got to know. Now, he has to live with this burden of information that was laid out to him.
Thank you! And yeah, that's what it seems like from some of the research I did about the song. I definitely didn't pick that up from the first listen though. 👀

It was part of a trilogy called Momma-Son. Alive where the son found out his real father died. Then he grows up and starts reminding her of the father and she seduces the son. "Once". The son grows up and becomes a serial killer. And " Footsteps" he's on deathrow. You should definitely check those songs out. There's a version of Footsteps with a harmonica. Mike McCready playing one of the best solos of all time acoustically is the real treat.

I love the fact that this song Alive became an anthem to celebrate life rather than questioning it.
