It’s a chilly morning in Toronto. I good day to work on making quilts. I’m glad to show you my latest two finishes. As usual, the binding forgives so many mistakes. 😉 Enjoy
Tea dying is brilliant! Recently my dad gave me a quilt my great grandmother had made, hand stitched, and from repurposed fabric. Shirts, curtains, and all kinds of things. It means so much to me! I am a new quilter and she inspires me so much.
These old quilts are like friends reaching out to us from the past. I always say a little prayer of thankyou to the original maker when I pick up old blocks etc. at yard sales.❤️
"Fairly squarish" keeps a body just as warm and comforted as the perfect ones. Probably better, since we don't worry so much about using a slightly wonky quilt. As my dad would say, "A blind man would love to see that."
Another example/story of how a quilt can outlive the maker of said quilt...maybe even two or three generations past the original maker. Kudos to you Karen for helping to keep this one quilt alive for future generations. Loved. Loved. Loved. This story. Thank you.
I love how you pondered a while on the maker of the scrap quilt. At the heart of every quilter is the hope that we will not be forgotten. You certainly fulfilled that for her even though you never met! ❤️
This past year I was gifted a lot of partially completed or fully completed squares that were part of a church sewing group project from 25 to 30 years ago. I finished them as best I could, quilted them, and wrote a story called Salvaged Squares. I then gifted these quilts to a woman’s center as a reminder that God can use what we may think of as Damaged goods.
I hope that you are also planning to do a segment on each of the other 2 tops and how you handled the challenges. I am very inspired by your work and videos. Thank you so much, great job!
You make such sweet thoughtful comments about the lady who made the quilt. You connect with her even though you’ve never met. That’s how it is with people of a same persuasion even though we aren’t all able to express it with words. Quilts/quilting is/has its own group of souls who connect through generations. I’m sure that, if she could see you, the lady is smiling and giving a slow nod of approval while saying, ‘ I knew that she would come along for only the right quilter would be called to finish my job.’
I loved this! I bought 60 hand-pieced grandma's flower garden quilt blocks made with 1920's and 30's fabric at an antique fair. All I needed to do was to add the white background to finish it!! Sounds easy... but I had never done anything like it before. The blocks were like brand new and almost every block was different fabric. I could tell from how they were sewn that different people worked on them. I took it to my parents in England and got stuck there for an extra two months because of the pandemic. I had bought similar background fabric to the only two completed blocks but of course it wasn't exactly the same. I taught myself to hand sew the hexagons slowly but surely. I would sit and watch movies with my parents as I quietly pieced together the blocks. How I loved working on each different block and couldn't help thinking about who sewed it all those years ago. Maybe they had gone through the great flu epidemic and now I was going through the Corona Virus pandemic 100 years later. My parents and I couldn't leave the house except for short walks and my cousins brought us food. It was wonderful therapy to see it come alive. I finally came home and finished it about a year after I started it and almost 100 years after someone else began it. The slightly different background fabrics do not detract from its beauty at all. This was a big accomplishment for me. A special 85 year-old friend has just finished hand- quilting it. She's probably a similar age to the quilt itself. I was worried the imperfect blocks would spoil it, but I really don't think you can tell now that it's quilted. I need to bind it but I am not sure if I should use the white background fabric or do a coloured binding. Any thoughts? :) Thank you for always brightening our days with your beautiful quilts and personality!
There is no right answer. And if you ask 5 different quilters on what colour to use you’ll get 5 different answers. You saw in the video how I folded the binding fabric to audition the colour. Do the same. I usually try out a copy of colours in the quilt, lighter and darker…and one crazy colour that I would not have chosen. Just know that there are many right answers. Chose one you like. I love the story. Be sure to write it down ❤️🤗
@@JustGetitDoneQuilts thank you for your suggestions. I am going to digital scrapbook the story as I took lots of photos during the process to document how I did it. I would love to always have one I'm working on by hand like this. :) 💞
The best part of working outside our comfort zones is that the zone get larger as our skill improves! Stashbuster 10 Quilt is gorgeous! And Barb's quilt is now a special heirloom. You're a hardworking magician transforming humble fabric into works of art. Keep up the good work!
I think your friend is going to be thrilled with how her aunt's quilt came out! The latest stash buster is incredible. the quilting and the colors are gorgeous! I absolutely love how you did it. I'd say you've definitely got the hang of that long-arm! 🌟
Wow - there was just something about the "aunt's" quilt that really struck a chord with me. It looks gorgeous but also your thoughts about her "maybe" story were moving. Thank you for treating the quilt with such respect and thank you for sharing.
This was great! I am a newborn quilter! Learning rules and colors again! My confession is from my own words … “I AM NOT GOING TO QUILT”!!!! BIG GRIN !! I am making my first top! Have more blocks to add, but I think I’m hooked! I did just as you suggested last night! Playing in the background was your FUN visit with the Gnome from Australia! Super good info and lots of fun! Thank You Karen for your talents!
Your work is beautiful Karen! I always look forward to your videos! You are so open and honest about your quilting projects. Thanks for sharing your quilting journey with us!
Karen you are a good friend! The old quilt looks fantastic! And your Stashbuster 10 is just beautiful.....excellent job on your quilting. Another lucky someone to get that gem!
Such a wonderful video! Finishing the vintage quilt was an incredible story, and what a tribute to the quilter who made that quilt top. I'm sure she is smiling through happy tears somewhere seeing that. I love your ruler work on the second piece. Gorgeous job as always.
I have watched MANY of your videos and you have blessed my life and quilting with new creativity, excitement but mostly with joy. Your kindness and caring are so uplifting . Thank you so much!!
Wonderful fmq Karen. Be very proud of yourself. I just love fmq. I have a sit down longarm - Sweet Sixteen and just love it. Well done on finishing your friend’s quilts. What a lovely think to do for someone. 🏆
Oh your stashbuster quilt is gorgeous. The quilting is beautiful and gave such depth and texture to the quilt. That old quilt is lovely. Your friend will be pleased I am sure.
Thank you for such a thorough and thoughtful video . Its great to have longarm-quilting information. Your emotional connections to the history and value of old quilts were very sincere and special to see. Keep challenging yourself.💪
Yes yes, wonderful teaching as always, thinking about the piecer’s story struck a chord, but my favorite part was the extended caress of the quilting texture. Quilting involves SEW many senses! Thank you, Karen.
How lovely, I’m sure that quilt has a story to tell, such good repair and finish. Looks lovely. Your friend will be so happy and grateful to have her auntie quilts back once all are done. Story pieces of the days gone by. 😊
Maybe that quilt was made during WWII when fabric was hard to come by and ladies would "trade" for different fabric or cut up old worn out clothes. The quilt turned out lovely Karen. You used a nice pattern for the quilting. What a special quilt to give back to your friend. The second quilt is just lovely. I like the patterns you used in the different parts of the quilt. They really stand out and add so much to the look of the quilt. What a great gift!
Vous avez raison de ne pas vous précipiter le résultat est magnifique. Merci pour ce partage. Votre travail m’encourage à continuer dans la voie du quilting.
Wow Karen, This Quilt Turned Out Fantastic. I admire your ability to work out of your comfort zone. I have learned so much from your videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. ❤️🥰❤️ Chris-Raleigh NC
So inspiring!! Watching your videos always inspires me to make quilts, use scraps & etc…from using Enders and starters which I later used for a village quilt for my son and DiL 2nd anniversary…..then to an ugly quilt “picnic” that I used for my oldest son and DiL for their 5th anniversary along with a picnic basket during the first summer of covid!! It’s been a difficult 10 months for me with major health issue for myself and hubby where I haven’t sewn or quilt much but this video has inspired me to start again!! Thanx Karen!! been following you, almost from the beginning and it’s encouraging, seeing a fellow Cdn who just wants to purely encourage, teach and inspire us without trying to sell us something!! Keep on doing what you do best!!
Karen, you did beautiful quilting. This is a quilt I’ll probably make later down my list. Your friend’s quilt reminded me of all the quilts my mom made. Many were like that, a hodgepodge of colour, texture and types of fabrics. Once completed, they always looked great. Thank you for sharing
That old quilt worked out great. I have had many old tops donated and I really try to quilt them densely to help keep them all together - especially if they are hand stitched tops. Your top ended up looking great, and I'm sure the lady who you did it for is delighted! Someday I hope to get a long arm. Thanks for sharing. I know it takes a lot longer to do anything if you are stopping to constantly film or take photos.
Your quilt (the one behind you) is so lovely. I love all of it- the fabrics, the quilting, the pattern. Dying the binding- genius, and perfect for this quilt. Love it all!

Chilly and windy in Colorado. Folding warm laundry so I can get to the sewing.
Karen, thank you for your tutorials and interviews! Beautiful sunny day in Appleton WI.
Cold in Milwaukee tonight!
❤ your comment..."she had found her happy place". A spoken truth is so special and "true" for so many of us!!!!

You are so right
It does look special. It's wonderful you and your friend cared enough to save these quilts with love. You're a good friend Karen.
“Fairly squarish” is how I look at almost all of my quilt blocks 😆. Very cool video.
Not only is there nothing wrong with that, it has its own kind of beauty
"Fairly squarish" keeps a body just as warm and comforted as the perfect ones. Probably better, since we don't worry so much about using a slightly wonky quilt. As my dad would say, "A blind man would love to see that."
Fairly Squarish would make a good revival band / book club / quilt guild name. Better trade mark that gem!
Wow, two terrific quilts! Well done 😍
Thank you! 😊 It's always a good feeling after the binding goes on

I believe quilting is a perfect metaphor for life. Sometimes you have to slow down and immerse yourself in the process.
Exactly
Wow Karen that stash buster is GORGEOUS! and the beautiful antique top… you made it look loved and special🥰
Thank you 😊
I think it's vintage. Antique is 100 years old.
