ZZ Top went to a Depeche Mode concert, got blown away by the sound, decided to add synth, and this album was the result. And they became good friends with the Depeche Mode guys!
Legs, Gimme All Your Lovin', and Sharp Dressed Man were all massively successful singles from this album, and the videos sort of form a three-part story about a magical hot rod. One you've reacted to all three, then you need to react to the videos back to back to back.
ZZT's smart move here was to embed the synths amidst other instrumentation, so that they undergird and complement the guitars, drums, etc. rather than replacing them, which unfortunately some '80s bands did to their (IMO) detriment.
This song was released at the height of MTV. Songs were written with video in mind as a total presentation. Since the guys in ZZ Top did not exactly have teen idol looks, videos were created that featured actors recreating the stories of the songs and having cameos of the band. You have to watch the video to truly appreciate the song. Sharp Dressed Man was another video must from this era.
I had the good fortune of working on the music video (actually all three ZZ Top videos) as an assistant to director Tim Newman. Tim was a commercial director who became one of the pioneers of modern music videos, starting with "I Love L.A." for his cousin Randy. It was a fun shoot and the guys in ZZ Top were hilarious to work with. Later on, I got to meet my rock hero, Lou Reed, when we shot his "I Love You Suzanne" video (even had an 18 frame cameo near the start as "Suzanne" walks into a club).
'80s ZZ Top was its own vibe. They even used the same cast of characters for each video. There's our hero. There's the three models in stockings and short skirts. And there's ZZ Top in the background, being the ultimate wingmen. MTV loved them!
Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top said he ran into Prince late one night in NYC, and Prince asked him how Billy got that pulsating synthesizer sound on Legs, which Prince used on his I Would Die For You song from the Purple Rain album.
I saw that you guys were doing this, and the first thing I thought was "I hope they're watching the video". The video is what MADE this song the huge hit it was.
This version sounds 'dirtier' than the classic MTV video. Not dirtier in lyrics, but the whole sound. Love it!! "Sharp Dressed Man" was another huge hit worth hearing!
This album, this sound, this era of the band was somewhat "controversial" among "ZZ Top fans" at the time (and, I guess to a degree, ever since.) Some decried the "abandonment of the band's blues roots", others whispered about "sellout", some just didn't like synthesizers, however minimally employed. Like you, I thought this was great execution of an ingenious concept. Beyond all that, if you are distracted enough not to notice the guitar work, that's on you. You can say this is their New Wave persona or whatever, but the palette of tone he uses is as down and dirty, gutbucket, T-Bone Walker roadhouse as anything you're ever gonna find, not to mention the deep Delta vocals. This worked in a big way...And they always kept doing the more traditional take, so everybody wins...
The first all female rock band to record albums for a major label were named Fanny. They didn't find out about that bit of slang until they went to the UK.
Around 1987, I was invited to see ZZ Top perform at the Los Angeles Forum. I never planned on seeing them in concert but I'm glad I did. Their live show was incredible.
Saw them at the Monsters of Rock festival(England) in 1985....The venue was Donnington race track...it was so cool....a helicopter carried the "Eliminator" car on to the track...the car did a lap and then up a ramp onto the stage.....out jumped the three guys and started paying.....great memories....great gig🎸🎸
As someone who didn't listen to popular radio before 1981, I couldn't figure out why ZZ Top fans from the 70s were SO MAD when the band adopted some 80s instruments and production. I'd never heard 70s ZZ Top when songs from this album were all over MTV but I've since come to the same conclusion that you guys did, which is that they pulled off an amazingly skillful and graceful switch from the 70s to the 80s.

I heard that Jimmie Hendrix said that Billy Gibbons was the best guitar player he ever met. I saw ZZ later, 1999, in their long career in a smaller venue in Las Vegas. They still rocked! One of the best, if not the best concert I ever saw.
This song and album will always hold a special place in my heart. The ZZ Top Eliminator tour was my very first concert on my 16th Birthday in Nashville TN. Sammy Hagar opening. Such great music and amazing live act.
ZZ Top had a fascination with the lower part of the female anatomy, as evidenced by "Legs", "Fool for your Stockings", and "Tush". All three are great songs.
I got to see ZZ Top in Tuscaloosa, Alabama two days after Dusty Hill died. I couldn't believe they went forward with the show. Also saw them in Tupelo, Mississippi more than 10 years ago. ZZ Top playing Texas blues on a hot summer night in Mississippi is a fine time!
Great reaction guys!! I might be a bit biased, this was my first introduction to ZZ Top. I was 5 in 1983, and my sister (she was 18) bought this cassette - and played it for me! Brian Jones was replaced twice and Bill Wyman is long gone. Charlie Watts passed recently.. Keith and Mick are the only originals. ZZ Top only had three to begin with, so I guess staying together was easier. Both bands are awesome
I saw this tour live. The stage was a giant dashboard complete with a cassette deck. At one point Billy and Dusty disappeared in a puff of smoke. ZZ Top always put on a great show! An earlier tour I saw they had real live giant steers on stage. I always admired how they moved through the changes like the champs they are. RIP Dusty.

I saw this coming months ago...this channel has become a showcase for average 80's radio friendly music that I personally never listen to. It was fun back when this channel was not a retro 80's radio station.
I was 16 in 1973 the very first time I saw Z Z. It was at LSU-E (Eunice, Louisiana) in their very small college auditorium. When they blasted their first song, I swore they had to have at least 2 more guitarists backstage. It was unbelievable!
This song was HUGE when it came out, whole album actually. Saw them in concert quite a few times, my favorite tour was Afterburner in 86 when a Sphinx head sucked up the white sheet covering their instruments on stage. Killer laser show as well. They always put on a great concert.
Saw them in 70's and BY FAR the loudest freakin' sound and loved every sec. Quad Marshall stacks - QUAD! And get the billing: J.Geils Band, Deep Purple, ZZ Top. Tube amps, massive PA stacks w/true 4-way crossovers (not this passive sh*t) and fresnel lights that literally could set the set-list on fire. Those were the days!
I saw ZZ in 1970 in crosstown Memphis. Billy Gibons with no hat short hair, a cowboy shirt and boots and blue jeans. A very small venue. Billy said we gonna boogie all night long. And they did.
The whole album is fire! As an 80's kid, Eliminator was my introduction to ZZ Top and it's a stone cold classic. Great tracks all through but I love 'TV Dinners',(great video as well!).
ZZTop: "She's got LEGS. She knows how to use them!" Me: "Oh, good. She isn't paralyzed..." Fantastic tune and album! Next try Sharp Dressed Man from the same album. BANG-errrrr! 🎩

2000 Blues and Burger Man from their Recycler album gets you into the 90's, where incidentally, they still kill it. Oh, and of course, Concrete and Steel.
As a college freshman with a friend who borrowed her Dad’s DeLorean, we dressed up in miniskirts, teased our hair out big, and went cruising around blasting this song with the windows down, stopping frequently so we could open the doors & emerge high-heels-first. Those are the guys with the furry guitars that go around in a circle.
YaaaaaaaaaaaaY! You guys reviewed a REAL ZZ TOP song! Congratulations!!! S Tier for sure.
Summer 1984, riding in my boyfriend's custom Z28, with this song blasting out the T-tops.
Oh boy this one screams high school!
I prefer older - Just Got Paid and La Grange.
Just Got Paid is definitely an underappreciated gem.
I started listening to ZZ Top in the early 70’s, I especially remember Fandango and Tejas albums in the mid ‘70’s.
ZZTop: "She's got LEGS. She knows how to use them!"
Me: "Oh, good. She isn't paralyzed..."
Fantastic tune and album!
Next try Sharp Dressed Man from the same album.
BANG-errrrr!

This song and album were massively HUGE back in the day. Great stuff still 40 years later.
Hey Guys if you want to see them transition into the 80s, you would want to check out the 1981 Album El Loco. So many great songs. Check out the iconic banger "Tube Snake Boogie" and "Pearl Necklace)
Some say you have to like ZZ Top of the 70s or 80s, but not both. That's nonsense! Both are outstanding! And, yes, watching the video to this song is a must!
ZZ Top was one of the biggest bands in the world in this era. They were huge.
2000 Blues and Burger Man from their Recycler album gets you into the 90's, where incidentally, they still kill it. Oh, and of course, Concrete and Steel.
Picking a favourite ZZ Top song is like choosing between your kids. Two that come to mind are Master of Sparks and Nasty Dogs and Funky Kings.
ZZ Top... the only band in the world that can makes 80s production actually sound good!
This whole album, nothin but bangers!
Literally grew up on ZZ Top, and had many of their cassette tapes as a kid, and many worn out from my walkman.
As a college freshman with a friend who borrowed her Dad’s DeLorean, we dressed up in miniskirts, teased our hair out big, and went cruising around blasting this song with the windows down, stopping frequently so we could open the doors & emerge high-heels-first. Problem was the college was in the middle of nowhere so the stops were the gas station, minimart, Burger King, etc 😂
