I actually am the one that recorded this live in Hartford with a cassette recorder with a wire and the microphone being held on my left hand. If you look on UA-cam you’ll find a lot of other songs from this concert also.
1974 was the peak of James Brown’s funk revolution with Zaire as the height. It would never be the same after 1974. Everything JB had worked hard for in the mid 1960s, starting with “Out of Sight” and more prominently “Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag” and the hits that followed would bring him to the mountaintop year of 1974, capturing the hardest and super heaviest funk JB would ever lay down.
@Phil Silverman agreed on the live album, Zaire was just too good to not have an LP done, just as incredible as Monterey, Woodstock, and Wattstax.
100% agree - there needs to be a multi CD high-res release of the Zaire concert
My uncle was the guitarist on his funkiest.... records. He playing guitar on this

James Brown o peso do som o Pai da matéria. SHOW!!!!!
This is actually one of the concerts that I recorded on cassette! I sent a copy in trade to Ron R and he traded it to others and it found its’ way onto UA-cam!
Do you recall if it was recorded in February or December 1974, also was it Bushnel Hall or the Civic Center?
Google Account I don’t recall exactly but it had to be February because there was snow on the ground and I saw this before I saw the concert at the Apollo later that year. I don’t recall going back to Hartford to see him later that year but it’s possible I did. I saw him live about 100 times from 1971 to 2005.
My Google Account Now I remember, it was the Bushnell Hall.
Yes this is the recording that I made in 1974 at Hartford Connecticut part of the entire show that I recorded on Cassette. Interesting trivia he didn’t spin around and do a split on the payback went into the main part of the song but when he performed this at the Apollo in 1974 he did the spin and the split.
Incidentally, as far as I can recall, out of the 100 or so times I saw Mr. Brown live from 1971 to 2005 this is the only one I was at that he played I GOT ANTS IN MY PANTS.
INCREDIBLE!!! It was such a hit, one of my favorites. I wonder why he never did it while Jabo was in the band. They coulda drove that one into submission!!!
Great show
I enjoy the funk era and groove in ants. Was a 2 part 45 only release and appeared on soul classics vol. 2. Those soul classics albums were teasers because it was mostly part 1 hits. Later the uncut ants made its way to the motherlode reissue and the make it funky the big payback cd compilation. While dead on the heavy bump album & your love is similar groove, brian mcknight did a one off upbeat song ,usually he sings mor ballads and tearjerkers, you should be mine. Sampling ants.
What a privilege for you too see the greatest entertainer ever. He’s my favorite. Can you tell me your favorite thing about seeing him live?
@@philipjames751 Well like I said I saw him live about 100 times from 1971 until 2005 but my favorite part of the shows was from the mid to late 70s until the early 1980s when he would sing PAPA’S GOT A BRAND NEW BAG and would do his “little bitty mash, small mash” part and dance across the stage doing knee drops, splits and push ups and splits then end on one leg! Also just the beginning introduction when he would come out onto the stage is so magical. So many great memories of those shows!
