When i was 12 i put a greenlight up of a piece of... a piece of sand, its even featured somwhere here on youtube xD You have to start some where, now im a professional dev, got an A grade on my license and make good money. Its ok to put out shit at first but you have to accept it for what it is and that you can NOT sell it. People pretending that their shit is good is really pathethic.

    • @Donnirononon

@MORGAN SAVENAY-BURLEY Well it depends. If your desire is only profit then yes but i pretty much started like that too. At 8 yrs i got an C++ book and i understood nothing so i did what i do: learning by doing. Stared with GameMaker modding their templates, later Web stuff and then Unity/UDK, with every project doing more and more myself. Today i would not even touch pre-made code for my projects as its not maintainable but what im trying to say is that you learn from it. Maybe not coding but other stuff. People nowadays call themselves "DevOps" or "Data Scientist" and i really dont want to sound arrogant but thats the stuff you should normally learn from exatly that: randomly trying out stuff, discovering new problems and sometimes its just stitching assets together just to learn that it is bad. Sadly many devs dont overcome to learn any more than the basic concept of code, they forget that this is only learning how to talk not how to give a speech and the reason is because they do not look over their plate and are not trying out stuff. Most of the best devs today are self taught and learned from looking at others code heck some stole others code giving 2 fs about the license. For me the question is only if someone wants to learn and give back or if someone wants to profit as much as possible while doing nothing but espicially with younger people its better to get at it calmly and make them better themselves and their skills instead of quitting.

Selling a game on Steam is not where you start. That's what itch and gamejolt are for. This kid isn't even old enough to start a business. Smoothbrains who hack templates together, and can't even wait two years to get their first penny from gamedev, are not the developers you're looking for. They overestimate their perception of quality, and have no concept of what "value" is. Their idea of game development is extremely shallow and vain.

What stands out to me with this one is that, contrary to all the other games you cover, this one seems more "realistic in size", if that makes sense. All the other games want to do so much but can't even get the base gameplay right, whilst this one is rather "simple". Endless zombie waves, survive as long as possible, get a high-score. This feels like the first "single-dev" game, that actually seems possible to finish. It's definitely still a ton of work, but a ton of work one man can do by himself over the course of some odd years besides school as a passion project. I wish this dev all the best and hopefully he can improve this game to the point where the current price tag is justified.
Also mad respect for asking Bigfry for a review, that guy has mad courage. XD

I see this problem in bigger games (and other software) too. 3 years in development, and then they give the QA people like 3 weeks to test. The cost of fixing bugs increases the later in development the bugs are found.

So to me this looks like a pretty decent tech demo that the kid achieved while learning game dev. It's got bugs and its issues. It's not imaginative with gameplay design and is very shallow. But honestly I'd still be proud of achieving that. Now there's nothing wrong with putting yourself out there and letting people pay money and have a go on your game, maybe there will be a few people that will get it and enjoy it for a bit, but if you are reading this my advice would be this:
I'm not gonna tell you to put the price down and the other stuff people say, (though I will agree) do what you like with that.
What I will say is treat this as the learning experience it's been. It's a tech demo and an experiment. I would carry on fixing it up and playing with it to get something that's very solid in terms of the gunplay and hopefully a lack of bugs, even if it's a super simple shooter like this. Because once you do that, you will have learnt a ton and what you can do then is 2 things.
    1. You can use the core gameplay elements of it and start a new, better game, which you will put some more thinking into and try and challenge yourself further.
    2. Start a shooter from scratch again, this time with all of the knowledge you have it will go a lot smoother and quicker and I can guarantee you'll find better ways to do things you have done before and you'll really see the rewarding progress that it gave you. It will ingrain all of the experience that you've gathered and will make you into overall a much more confident game dev. This applies to pretty much any creative art. I spent years on music and trust me, enjoying it is the most important thing that noone can take away from you.
And in the mean time, it can surely act as a pretty great portfolio. Just don't treat this as a "I made a game and I really want it to succeed" scenario. You have to be aware that in 5 years you might completely get rid of it from your portfolio, because you'll have way more impressive stuff to show off and this will just be a little nugget of what you will be able to do. All the stuff that BigFry said, are most probably all true, but don't take it as a "you suck at this" opinion, because you only been doing it for 2 years for fuck sakes. Let it be your drive and hopefully in a few years you'll be another couple projects down the line and you'll be making a pretty fucking sick tactical shooter that BigFry is gonna be creaming about on his channel.

hah, we've seen worse on this channel tbh, if the dev of this game is watching the video and reading these comments, i got a tip for you, and it something so many seem to either dont do enough of or skip entirely: Playtest. You need playtesting BADLY, take it somewhere or gather up some volunteers, and playtest the hell out of it until the game breaks into shards, playtesting is the *single most important* aspect of development, nothing else compares in importance, and i know you said its launching soon, but if you are reading this, put off your release, and playtest this more, and if you dont playest in the earlier stages (and you might not have), you will regret it and be forced to deal with and implement that feedback from people who *paid* for it and are pissed at you and might not give any real feedback, they'll just leave you with "your game sucks", and nobody wants that, you and the game got promise, but theres no way around it, you need more time and i hope you take it

tl;dr Your age shouldn't matter. What you're juggling doesn't matter. One thing matters a lot, though, when it comes to any project such as this: Start Slow and Fail Fast.
*Start Slow* means that if you have an ambitious project in mind but this is your first ever game made, start slow by keeping the expectations low and the product definitions lean. Don't follow the "cool" factor but instead, start with basics mechanics and make sure they are more than decent, and only then you can start prototyping new features and playtest the shit out of every prototype to determine if it works. If it doesn't, even if it's really cool, ditch it. Another tip is to not define your game before it's at least partially done. Don't say "I'm developing an MMO FPS Adventure game with Spiders" but instead make the game with a vision in mind and once it takes shape you can look at the *existing* mechanics and decide how the game is now defined. Is it a first person with guns? FPS. does it have skills and role-playing? add "with RPG elements". It's not a must but I found that any time you define a game first it always constrains you to certain mechanics that won't necessarily work down the line.
*Fail Fast* means that you should bootstrap the game quickly and have a playable prototype or some script or anything that can be a proof of concept then present it to people. Don't be afraid that someone will "steal" your ideas because A) nothing stops them from doing it better than you once it's out and B) you need to get feedback asap.
If the initial feedback is good then keep going. If it's bad? you just experienced your first *failure*. you now have 3 options: 1) decide to give up 2) shift the direction of the project and 3) collect more feedback and possibly find a niche for your game. All 3 are better than ignoring feedback (or worse, avoiding it) and waste 2 years of your life on a project. It's not really "wasted" its just not as efficient as failing after a month and learning the same hard lessons it took you 2 years to learn.

As a kid when I was making games (at the same age as this guy) I made the games free and put donation details (back then the go to was paypal); if they decided they wanted to support me, they could send me a few dollars so i could take my GF out on a date haha it wasn't much but it was something and the idea was never to make money (at that point), it was rather to have fun creating something. i don't think I ever made more than 200 dollars.

the problem with using age as an argument is it causes a number of issues for me.
    1. its being used as an excuse so that you don't be too hard on his game, but if your charging people any price for something you got to be sure its at least a proper working product and a good one and end of the day he says "its just £6.99" but thats still a lot of money for what essentially is a broken asset game.
    2. many kids his age and even younger have made quality games in the past and on their own too. some games might not be as graphical but were still very well thought out and functioning. look at games like unturned for instance. sure its a block type game but has so many functions (at the time i played it years ago) and a good working building and farming mechanic. best of all it was free and he added cosmetics later for people who wanted to give the dude money.
    3. this is the most important point. when your striving to become anything harsh criticism is needed. if you treat everyone with kid gloves especially when it comes to a product your trying to sell it dampens what they could actually achieve and makes them believe their product or whatever it is they are striving for is actually passible.
for example when i was learning to code for amnesia mods as a kid i used to do a lot of shortcuts and cheap coding to get away with not doing anything actually complex and thought out. this made the mod very messy and just tedious and caused many scripting issues. if people had told me "hey good job dude for your age its perfectly fine" ( i was 14 at the time) then i would have just carried on and never learnt how to do actual coding for more complex scenarios and bug fixing. however it was because people told me the truth and offered advice that i went back to the drawing board and worked on it again. now i never released that mod because in the end i wasn't as happy with the overhaul work and to be honest my story was lame im not ashamed to admit it haha. but i kept the mod in my files as a representation of what i achieved and a reference for future efforts.
i tried many things over the years but coding just was not as fun for me. i even tried it in RPG maker but sadly there are not many good tutorials out there (at least at the time dunno about now) that covered all the grounds of how these things work. which is a shame because i think it would be very good for young people and up starting game makers to have more options out there other than college or books especially for people like me who learn more from watching and then doing myself so i can understand it. however this mindset did cross over into other hobbies like HEMA (Historical European Marshal Arts aka swordplay). I sucked when i first started and was tired of people treating me with kid gloves. had someone show me how to do it properly and treated me just like he would anyone else and within 2 months i had achieved a lot for someone completely new to the hobby.
anyways long post over. hope this kid keeps trying and for the love of god don't release it in the state its in. take your time, delay it and work on it more. this was clearly what i did when i was younger and inexperienced and just did a rushed job and said "cool this is a game" and boom on the internet. all it will do is upset you when people start asking for refunds and lambast the game with negative reviews which hurts your reputation for future releases. seriously if anything release it as a free game on ichio as a work in progress test demo thing. get some advice from the community and keep working on it.

I know people want to make a living making games and that is fair, but if you can't look at your game and honestly say this is better than most games at this price range don't sell it. Make it a free project. You will avoid a lot of shit that you shouldn't be dealing with at your age or for being a solo dev. Keep working on it, improving, you might get a following or a job opportunity.

But with all that incentive to play I would no doubt but it once that happened work on getting more things for people to look for or play for more guns maybe even gun upgrades or something to play for a reason to play just shooting zombies get boring after a bit

Honestly the collision bug should be an easy fix, the bullet count on the front of the gun needs to either go or morph into the model itself (something like what apex legends has), the sound might be a hard fix but it is probably necessary. Instead of using one sound for every action maybe have a list of like six or so zombie growls then make it choose a random one but the same sound can’t go twice in a row. Then the only problem is the ui and stages/battlefields. It might be better time wise to go with a retro shooter feel instead of the modern approach, this would help with the aesthetic to the game, increase frames, decrease load times, and give you more time to work on the actual layout of the map.

I'll actively playtest this. I love seeing people try their hand at development and I love the direction this game seems to be taking aesthetically. I decided to purchase. I'm going into Game development myself as a university major so I've always been interested in how others create their games.
This being said, the fundamental design elements are sound, with a fair bit of quality-of-game bugs needing a lot of work. A few years worth of "sanding" it out and getting people to look for bugs can definitely show promise for it. 👍🏻

Apart from fixing the bugs this game really needs better maps, i really dig the concept of having a game where you just shoot hordes of zombies and nothing else, but when you're in an open circle/square with basically nothing else it's really just not worth playing, i'd rather have a knock off cod zombies where getting points opens up the map and allows you to buy weapons and upgrades, at least that is going to keep me engaged more than 5 minutes, right now i don't see this as a game worth publishing, but more like a solid foundation to start making the real game that this could become, honestly if it was me making the game i'd spend allot of time making a bigger map even if the quality isn't all that great, the graphics don't need to be amazing for the gameplay to be fun, i'd be fine with having a map made of cubes that is intricate and fun to move around in while avoiding zombies rather than a big circle with high quality assets on the sides.
I used to make shitty "fps creator" games when i was a kid, and one thing i learned was that the quality of the game does not matter that much if the core concept is enjoyable, but if it isn't, you could make a AAA quality game and it would still suck. Think of it like building a fancy mansion without making proper foundations, the building will just crumble because there is nothing supporting it.

I don’t get like the whole “the environments just assets” thing, like of course they’re just assets, one model can cost upwards of £1000, how would any indie dev who hasn’t received funding who does have rich parents afford custom models?

As a 16 year old myself, im pretty amazed by this.
Here I am watching UA-cam and eating shit and being depressed for no reason.
And then there are kids like this. He worked hard for this and with school and all... Damn bro this is pretty motivating actually. Thank you. I will do something more productive in my life than what I currently am.
Btw thats pretty sick game for a 16 year old. Keep the good shit bro!

Dude, you are roasting a 16 year old boy, who made an incredibly well looking and nice + cheap game. Yes it has a few bugs, I get it, but that doesn't give you the right to be so mean. I think the boy did an incredible job.

He isn't going ultra hard on him, and if you want to be successfull you NEED hard criticism. If people just say "Yea yea its good just needs some work" then you wont learn anything

I feel like that should be your catch phrase at the end of these kind of videos: “It’s a game!”
For a 16 year old with 2 years put in, it’s not horrible. It may be pre-made assets, but that’s kind of a problem if I can’t tell if it’s a copy/paste or built from ground-up. Gameplay is everything, specially for a basic idea like this. But a unique look could go miles as well.

el unico error que tiene es el de el arma que se bugea, eso se arregla literalmente en menos de una hora, abres el blueprint del personaje, desactivas la colisión del arma y de las manos, lo compilas, lo guardas, sacas una actualización y voilá
