The D-50 has such a special warm and full sound while being digital, it's very unique. Great synth, I've had one since 1994 and I've bought and sold many synths, but it's the one I've always kept (and always will keep)

Bought this years ago for my daughter, and can't remember about the internal vse the read only card. Seems like I borrowed a book and made a lot of other sounds in the internal. Did the internal have the same programed sounds the read only card had but allowed you to make changes internally? after years of sitting the battery died inside and I lost all internal sounds. How do I get them back?

The D-50 is definitely one of the cooler 80s/90s synths, and like you said, it was groundbreaking for its time. A friend of mine worked in a pawn shop and one came in - keyboard player needed money, so he sold his synth. Well my buddy snatched it up for $200. I borrowed it from him for about a month and he offered to sell it to me for like $400. You know I still kick myself for not buying it, right?

I recorded some of my earliest stuff on a Tascam 4-track cassette recorder using a borrowed Roland d-50 and my Akai ax60 . My ax60 handled some of the base and lead stuff but d-50 had such a lush sound that it filled all the middle. my favorite presets were spacious sweep and the glass voices. I thought about getting a used one but I was very happy to get the boutique version instead.

Always been a fan of the DX synths, had the 100 for years and now own the 21 but I'm really kicking myself for having ignored the rack mount Roland LA synths for so long. Love your channel btw, always great content!

Everybody needs a D-50 ins a pedestal. Those synths will help you in every production, they are so fat and with so much taste. I have several synths and I always end up with the D-50 when jamming and for inspiration. It is not a pretentious synth, it just does its job really well.

Years ago, my bargain hunting uncle was at a goodwill and saw them unload a keyboard and asked how much he could buy it for, they said 20 US dollars. He gets home, I see it and to my surprise I see he had brought home a Roland D-50 with no power cord. I could not believe my eyes, I always had wanted a synth. We quickly adapted a plug and turned it on, and it was blank, no sounds, no presets. By this time, I was savvy enough to know about MIDI and with quick research found out that I could load sounds via SysEx. We still have it to this day.

This Synth is one of the holy grails, if you sell that, you maybe never become a D-50 back or you must pay a lot of money to get it back. Maybe not that expensive like a very rare Jupiter-80, but a D-50 has also a bit of a price. And why should you sell it?! The D-50 is still a great device nowadays, with great sounds to produce or make live music or just to have fun.

Had one of these since it came out in 1987.....if I'm being critical yes it's a little noisy and DSP effects have come a long way but at the end of the day wow can it sound good. It also helps to have someone go through all these sounds who can play! Still some of the best organ sounds out there and if you learn to program it from scratch it's still hugely capable and rewarding.
