Who are the People of the Holy Land? (Historical & Modern Demographics of Israel & Palestine)

  • Today we're going to be looking at the people of the Holy Land (Israel & Palestine) and the history and demographics of the region which includes dozens of unique people groups divided by language, religion, ethnicity/ancestry and other cultural groupings giving an extremely diverse and complex makeup in the region that is unique from anywhere else on Earth and is of extreme significance to billions of people around the world due to the religious significance to followers of Abrahamic faiths.
    Starting with the ancient Semites, Canaanites, Israelites and many other groups that have come from near and far to add their own distinct cultural impact in the region, today we'll be looking at the Jewish, Islamic, Christian and other unique groups in an around the Holy Land, dispel some widely held myths regarding these groups and their history and how their demographic share of the population in their home nation and abroad has changed due to the tragic and somewhat ironic history that has troubled this region for thousands of years. No offense or bias is intended for any groups in the region. This video is the longest I have ever put out since there is simply so much to cover without missing important details. Let me know what you think of these longer videos that combine history with modern demographics. Thanks for watching!

    Just a little remark, it is widely accepted that Hebrew was no longer the common language for most Jews during the Roman period. It was still the predominant liturgical language, as it would continue being for all of Jewish history, but due to the Babylonian exile, by the time Jews were able to resettle Judea under the Persian empire, they had switched to Aramaic as their common vernacular. That's why some books of the Old Testament end in Aramaic.

    • @Mer1912
      @Mer1912 5 місяців тому +41

      No, not just any sort of Aramaic. An Aramaic of their own: Judeo-Aramaic. There’s a reason why the Jews had already adopted the standard alphabet used for Aramaic when they were still Hebrew speakers

      Archaeologic and genetic data support that both Jews and Palestinians came from the ancient Canaanites, who extensively mixed with Egyptians, Mesopotamian, and Anatolian peoples in ancient times.
      Thus, Palestinian-Jewish rivalry is based in cultural and religious, but not in genetic, differences

The reason everyone hates the US is because our foreign policies have been largely based on throwing around our economic and military weight. We have used our nations various strengths to bully other countries as much as possible. That’s obviously not a good way to make friends. Oh don't worry, while this wasn't the Rabbithole i meant, i can guarantee you that we Historians of Contemporary History here in Europe are all very "logically minded" including when it comes to WW2. There is a Reason why a lot of one of the most respected German Historians have garnered Criticism by the Media in the USA etc. for simply stating Facts.
      In fact when we become Historians here in Germany we had almost a whole "Semester" (dont know the english word, but basically a Chapter of when we get our PHD in History) that focused on how as Historian you should always be aware of your own Bias but be especially aware and prepare for Attacks by the Media on whatever you comment and whatever you release.
      Regarding Dresden etc. among Historians this is taken very seriously and broadly still considered a War Crime.
      Never mistake "Media" with what actual Historians write about, publish and defend.
      The Media can be very "Oh Dresden wasn't so bad" because they are very politically minded. meanwhile among Historians it's the opposite.
      In fact, pretty much every Historian i ever worked with from the USA, Russia, Poland, Israel, Italy and even the UK was of the Opinion that Dresden and similar Incidents were not justified.
      the Media of course always loves to invite some "Pop Historian" (as we call them) on to give their Commentary some "Credibility" where the average Watcher will think "Oh! A Historian, so this Report is accurate!"
      My point being: As much Issues are there are to this Day regarding Historians and WW2, never ever mistake it with whatever the Media in whatever Country focuses on and spins.

    Very good video as usual, Masaman. And welcome back!
    Just three comments:
    1) Nowhere in the video is it mentioned that some Kurdish people arrived in the area hundreds of years ago, to the extent that there have been Kurdish quarters in places like Gaza. (Saladdin, who reconquered the Holy Land from the Crusaders, was Kurdish himself - but that's just scratching the surface.) Of course, these days they're mainly assimilated into the Palestinian Arab population.
    2) The Dati (or national-religious) sector, roughly equivalent to the Modern Orthodox (like myself) among North American Jews, is pronounced "dah-tee", not "day-tee".
    3) Evangelicals, among Protestant Christians in America, can be the equivalent of all mainstream Orthodox Jews (Modern and non-Hasidic Haredi alike). As for the Amish-Haredi comparison, it's quite a bit misleading, as really, Old Order Amish ~= Hasidic (e.g. Satmar, Belz, Vizhnitz), New Order Amish ~= Habad (an outward-looking Hasidic movement seeking outreach among fellow Jews), Old Order Mennonite ~= non-Hasidic Haredi, and New Order Mennonite ~= Modern Orthodox.

      Alot of Palestinians have Jewish ethnic roots, but were forced to convert to Islam during the Islamic conquest and the Ottoman empire. Modern Israel is now a melting pot of Jews from all over the world, especially Morocco, Yemen and Europe. As for the Palestinians are themselves mixed Jewish ancestry with neighboring arab levantine countries and even turkish, and European decent.

    Great work overall! I think that the only reason why Judeo-Arabic is considered a separate language from Arabic in the data is that the speakers of this dialect are Jewish. As an Arabic speaker, I understand every single word of Judeo-Arabic as it is part of the existing Arabic dialect continuum. In my opinion, considering Judeo-Arabic a language is like saying Egyptian Arabic is a separate language from Arabic. Therefore, the only difference between Arab Jews and other Arabs is religion. They all speak the same language.

    • @FairyCRat
      @FairyCRat 5 місяців тому +4

      I personally think that treating Egyptian Arabic (and any other dialect) as a separate language from (Standard) Arabic, does make some sense. After all, Standard Arabic is essentially an updated version of 7th century Arabic, while the colloquial dialects are natural evolutions of it, so they're about as similar as the modern Romance languages are to Latin, the only difference is that Arabs never switched to their vernacular languages for formal use.

    I do appreciate your effort and I recognize your goal is to be balanced, but I do have some things to nitpick:
    -Painting the region as being constantly being in conflict is a bit inaccurate. Yes, over the thousands of years of documented history that has happened, you could say the same about Italy or even Texas, which was dominated by multiple native groups, then controlled by the Spanish, French, Mexican, American and Confederate forces, as well as it's independant Republic. If you compared Palestine to Texas over the course of the last 600 years, you could argue that Palestine has been far more stable, having been under solid Ottoman rule for the vast majority of that time. Point being, the idea that the region is particularly turbulent is very much skewed by recent historic events, and in particular the introduction of Jewish settlers.
    -While commonly reported, there is no hard evidence that the region was renamed to Palestine as a punishment for the Judean revolt. This may indeed be true, but it mostly is only part of commonly accepted history because of writing by Jewish, and in particular, Zionist historians. The name Palestine had been used to refer to the region previously and it's use currently and throughout history shouldn't be attributed to some petty revenge of a Roman emperor without greater historical documentation.
    -While the Hebrew-speaking people of the region were evidently the most important group throughout most of Ancient times (prior to the Judean revolt), historicial evidence does not demonstrate that the region was a monocultural, purely Jewish society at any point. In the Old Testemant times Hebrew-speaking people co-existed (peacefully or not) with Phillistines, Canannites, Moabites, and even Arab tribes among others. By the time of Jesus, not only had Rome conquered the region, but it had previously been colonized by Greeks, whose pressence was so strong that the New Testemant was written in Greek. As well, Hebrew had already become simply a lethurgical language for Jews, replaced by Greek and Aramaic. All this to say, a unified and uniform Jewish identity tied to the region that the modern State of Israel claims to represent isn't completely historically accurate.
    -"Arab Muslims and Arabic-speaking Christians"- this seems to betray a cultural bias to marry the identities of Muslims and Arabs, which in turn divorces the identiy of Christians, and identity many Westerners understand, from the identity of being Arab. Arab Muslims and Arab Christians are both Arabs. There were Arab Christians in Palestine before Islam existed. There were Arab bishops in the region before Islam existed. Arabs are a people with a shared culture. An Arab who is Christian is still an Arab. Calling them an "Arabic-speaking Christian" seems to denote that not being a Muslim negates someone from being an Arab.
    -Genetic studies, your forte, would have been great here. Showing that both Palestinians and Israelis have genetic ties to the land is a good element to understand.
    Now, nitpicking is over. I think beyond that there is a serious critique to be made. By attempting to be balanced when we speak of this conflict, we then tend to smooth over Israel's rough edges. Palestinian Arabs worked the fields, fished the seas and traded in the cities of Palestine for generations before Zionism inspired Jews to settle in the region followed by a course of history that allowed for a Jewish state to be established and to take more and more control, which has resulted in immense suffering and loss for the Palestinian people. Of course, there were wars launched by neighboring countries, and Palestinian militant groups have perpetrated acts on Israelis that have been horrific, the overall narrative should clearly show the inbalance of power and the disproportionate harm that has been done to Palestinians, not with the goal to demonize Israelis or condone Palestinian/Arab action, but to frame the conversation in a place that more accurately because that will be the only way to get to a place of peace.

      @artair70 15 днів тому

      @@andrulemon You've clearly never heard of the "Arab invasion" as it's historically knows as the "Muslim conquest of the Levant"
      It wasn't Arabic they spoke and it wasn't people who would call themselves Arab in that region either. You named North African nations that had the exact same treatment and Sudan is a Black nation.
      Berbers aren't Arab, it was Arabised, same reason places like Australia now Speak English, it's hardly the native population there.
