  • This is a job I've needed to do for a year! Expect to get covered in dirt and spend 80% of the time on your back. Nice to have a boring job like this finally done and limit the drips of oil on the ground!

Thanks for the video. Doing same on mine, although official manual instructs the bolts must be loosened in a specific order and tightened to specific torque and order.
Looking at the pan it has a slight distortion when off to clamp more at the ends.
I actually removed all the rust and refinished my pan finishing with a 2K black, but I tend to go over the top. Also I used two ball hammers to restore the bolt holes which had been over tight and distorted up. The pan is double skinned and I wanted to protect it from further rust. But the JLR official workshop manual is very specific about the need to torque the bolts in a specific order as well as opposite for removal, like doing a cylinder head! Hope yours keeps dry now, it will probably be fine 👍

Always worth priming your oil filter before fitting. It's surprising how long it takes for the oil pump to fill a dry filter!

I use a large margarine container to catch the oil filter and oil (once unloosened). This way, it doesn’t become a messy job. You will need to use both hands to unscrew filter and hold container.

So I have a 300tdi defender. It’s not a 300 from standard so it’s had a 300 put in it so the snorkel is on the wrong side. And it’s got a k&n filter on it. I want to connect the snorkel up but don’t know how as I don’t have any connections but I also have no air filter box or air filter ? I only have an open k&n with what it came with. Any chance you could help me out or link me what I need ?

Hi, the sump can be taken away without lifting the vehicle? Very good to know because I need to change the sump on my Disco 300TDI, I suppose in that case the sump must come off without issues, and no need to lift, what do you think? thank you very much for sharing the job!

Thanks, much better than the usual “look at what I’ve done to my defender” videos that people with lots of dosh are producing at the moment! Very helpful, so you don’t need a sump gasket, just the silicone?

Also I’m a novice with mechanics 😂 my sump drain plug is leaking. Would I be capable of doing what you did and taking the sump off giving it a good clean checking why it’s leaking then putting it back. Is it as simple as fkr example 5 bolts ?

It's a LandRover, it's supposed to leak oil. Are you sure that the Wabco brake vacuum pump isn't leaking from the bottom of the pump body joint?

Just curious did you have to let the axle hang to get enough room to get the sump out? I also want to drop & clean the oil strainer on mine.

Hi, very good tutorial...by the way, how long does oil sump seal need to be clean and seal it? Is it every time we change our engine oil etc? thank you :-)
