- A salt is formed when hydrogen ions are replaced by a metal or an ammonium ion in an acid. A base is a material that reacts with an acid to produce just water and salt. When an acid reacts with a base, it produces a salt.
Properties of Salt
Colour: colourless, transparent, or white.
Taste: different salts can depict all the five basic tastes, sour, sweet, salty, bitter, and even a hint of savoury or umami.
Odour: Odourless
Melting Point/Boiling Point: The melting point of sodium chloride is 800 degrees Celsius or 1,072 degrees Kelvin. The boiling point of sodium chloride or salt is 1,737 degrees Kelvin or 1,464 degrees Celsius. (roughly)
Examples of neutral salts: Sodium chloride (NaCl), Potassium chloride (KCl)
Examples of acidic salt: Ammonium sulfate ((NH4)2SO4), Ammonium chloride (NH4Cl)
Examples of basic salts: potassium cyanide (KCN), Zinc chloride hydroxide (Zn(OH)Cl)
Double Salts: potash alum (KAl(SO4)2·12H2O)
Examples of mixed salts: Calcium disodium EDTA, Sodium potassium carbonate
Complex Salts:Tetra amino cupric sulfate ([Cu(NH3)4]SO4)
Family of Salts
Chloride Family: Sodium chloride, beryllium chloride, potassium chloride, copper chloride, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, aluminum chloride, etc.
Sulphate Family: potassium sulphate, aluminium sulphate, copper sulphate, magnesium sulphate, sodium sulphate, etc.
Nitrate Family: potassium nitrate, aluminium nitrate, copper nitrate, sodium nitrate, calcium nitrate, etc.
