- Hi Guys!
I'm on vacation in Mesa, Arizona, and decided it was time to use the roof rack and make some room inside the car by installing a cargo carrier.
I spent a lot of time online researching rooftop cargo carriers to see what I could get locally for a decent price. It came down to Cabela's 18 cubic foot cargo carrier. it was $50 more than the JEGS model on Amazon, but I could pick up Cabela's model locally at Bass Pro. The rating on the Bass Pro definitely wasn't as good as the JEGS, which bugged me, but I needed it.
I watched 2 UA-cam videos, one for the Cabela's and one for the JEGS. They looked the same, although Cabela's video didn't show the hardware. Nonetheless, I felt confident in installing it myself.
When I picked up the carrier at Bass Pro, I asked if they would mind if I installed it in the parking lot and they keep the cardboard box, and thankfully, they were fine with it.
As soon as I saw the U bolts, I knew it was the same exact carrier as the JEGS branded one. they have a special shape that I haven't seen before.
All totall I had it installed in about 20 minutes by myself. Instalation is extremely easy, the hardest part being adjusting the cross members to be spaced correctly for the U bolts to fit into the carrier's existing holes. Which wasn't hard at all.
All in all, I'm happy with my purchase. The $50 was worth picking it up and having it that day rather than hoping for a shipment to arrive before I leave for home. Although today I noticed the price for the JEGS one on Amazon has since went up to $299.99, so there is no difference at this point.
Thank you for watching!
I just wanted to thank some of the Jegs cargo carrier 18 cu ft videos and reviews. I have a Promaxx 18 cu ft cargo carrier and got limited instructions with it and was not sure how to open the top piece without the other side slipping off. I assumed people were leaving the other side locked but I was scared to try that. I went ahead and bit the bullet and opened it up with the other side still locked and it worked. I also put in the uprights on the back and front. That is basically all I was missing. It was actually easy to put together with no tools and I am pretty sure they are identical units.
It looks solid. I might have to get one of these.
We went on a over 100 mile trip today and so far it's rock solid. I'm surprised there is no difference in road noise. I was expecting to hear whistling or something, but none.
I just took a road trip across Washington, through Idaho to Montana and back. I decided to get a rooftop carrier and was a little skeptical about the JEGS because it was less than half the price of most competitors but it performed beautifully. Carries LOTS of stuff and kept it perfectly dry. Huge bang for buck!
What make of vehicle did you attach this to?
It's my 2018 Toyota Rav4.
Quadratec sells the same carrier under the name Tactik currently on sale for $161.70.
Thanks!!! Looking at it now.
thanks
It whistles at 70 mph
OPening it is CRAP if you're a short woman. It is very difficult to get the things to go into the slot and hold. YOu get one in and then while you're trying to get the second one in, the first one comes out. I'd like to blow up the danged thing! I have the 10 cubic ft one. If I had it to do over again, I'd get a Thule.
I would have liked a Thule too, but not for double the price.
