ACTUAL PEN SWATCHING BEGINS AT 5:06! This is the first video in a new 'series' on our channel where I'll be showing how different pens and mediums work on the Tomoe River paper that Hobonichi uses in their Techo, Weeks and notebooks! This one is about Kuretake's Zig Clean Color Dot pens! I talk a lot before I get down to the pen swatching, so you can click on the time stamp above if you just want to skip to the swatching.
CLARIFICATION: I should have mentioned that the Hobonichi plain notebook I used and the Weeks memo pads I showed all have Tomoe River paper pages, which is why they would work very well as ink swatch books for Hobonichi users. I also should have mentioned that the pages in the plain notebook are white, but the pages in the memo pads I showed are a light cream like the pages in the Weeks.
I got my set of pens on Amazon Japan for 2,500 yen. If you go to www.amazon.co.jp and search for 'Clean Color Dot', you'll find them. I've linked to them on Scrapbook.com and Amazon.com below just because I'm an affiliate with them, but you can get the pens for less on Amazon Japan.
Right now, only third-party sellers are offering them on Amazon Japan [they're not being sold directly by Amazon Japan yet], but I kept checking until there was a third-party seller whose items were fulfilled by Amazon Japan and who would be willing to ship to Canada. You might have to keep checking, but it's worth it if you want to save some money.

To be up front, these are affiliate links, folks! As a Scrapbook.com and Amazon associate/affiliate, I earn a commission from qualifying purchases. The supplies I used were purchased by me.
Prices on Amazon fluctuate, so I would recommend doing some comparison shopping if you think a price is too high! I will sometimes link to more than one source in case of differences in availability or price.

Your lettering is so nice. I agree with your idea of using one book for all your pen and swatch collections.
Friend or foe is a great name for this series. Nothing weird about having a notebook for swatching. I use the Hobo memo notebook to keep track of what ink is in my fountain pens and it really is helpful. Excellent video, as always!
Thank you so much for being so kind, Jennifer! 💕🤗 Keeping track of the ink in your fountain pens is a great idea!! 👍🏼👍🏼🖋️
This review caught me by surprise because it was the only accessory I’d been eyeing on the Hobonichi site and I feel like not many people understand how amazing this brand is. The reason why this product has been on my mind is because the Kuratake ZIG Chalk Pastel Writers have been my go-to markers for oh give or take 15+ years and have been discontinued as of late. I can’t even talk about it this wound runs so deep, but your review helps so thank you, Chan. I’m now slightly more open to the idea of seeing other markers as options, but still not ready to make any long-term commitments if you know what I mean.
I love the idea behind the series! Thanks!
Thanks for sharing these. I have the brush version and I love using them, they don’t come in the dot colors but they come in similar colors.
What a wonderful idea! This will be so helpful.
Very nice review. I appreciate the water test, I didn’t expect them
To hold up so well. Pleasantly surprised.
This review was super helpful. Thanks.
Thank you so much, Theresa! 💖🤗 I'm glad it helped!
Hi Chan! Thanks for doing this swatch! I have seen people using the dot pens but I wasn't sure if I should get some because of possible bleed-through.
I love the way the dots are slightly darker in the centre and around the edge - it looks like a watercolour effect. And the colours are all gorgeous, I can't pick a favourite!
Thanks again, xx
Thanks for watching, Katie!! 💖🤗 I'm with you -- I love that the dots are not totally solid! They do have a watercolour-y look to them that I think is so nice. Gives them character! 😸 And the colours!! 😻😍
Your writing is AMAZING!!! Great idea for a series and I can't wait to see the videos!!! Thank you!!!
That seriously means a lot to me, Vicki!! 💕🤗 Thank you so much for your kindness!! 💗💗💗
Ok, totally loving this series and what may come of it. Definitely can’t wait to see what you have in store. Those are great markers, especially on TR paper. I haven’t decided if I want to stock up on more markers, but these will be on the maybe list. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for always being so kind when you comment on my videos! 🙏🏼 It means more to me than you know! 💖🤗
GREAT idea for series! And the using one of the super small/slim notebooks for swatching is perfection 💕
I concur!! I will do the same! I have about a million pens and all my swatches are scattered amongst a gajillion notebooks!
Thank you, ladies! 💖🤗 And happy pen swatching, Tracie! 🖊️😁
I love how you used the shitajiki! It’s my favorite pencil board of all time!
I was debating whether or not to purchase these from Hobonichi, but I noticed they are Japan Only. I looked on JetPens website, and they have singles and the large set. I loved some of the images shown with what you can do. Then your video comes out, and I am sold! Thank you for showing them on the Hobonichi paper. I fell in love with the colors, and that Island Coral is perfect! I love that you are using the plain notebook as a swatch book. I was planning on using one for swatching fountain pen inks, but hadn’t considered using a plain notebook or a memo pad for swatching my other pens and watercolors. Great idea! 😻🧡
Thanks for sharing! You have great timing! 🤘🏼🧡
Ooh, a new series! I love it! I want those dot pens! ❤
Thank you so much, Sharon!! 💖🤗 They're awesome pens! 🖊️😺
I think this series is a great idea. I look forward to seeing some more
Thanks for your kindness and support, Sylvia! 💖 I appreciate it! 😄😸
A lovely new series!
Thank you so much!! 💕🤗
Great review! I agree these are gorgeous, and thank you so much for putting in the links for purchasing. I should get my set of 12 around the same time my Hobonichi 2020 order arrives. Because it’s THAT TIME OF THE YEAR! 😁😁😁
Haha loved the ending with the pencil board! I already have the other dot pens, the tombow ones, so not sure I can justify buying theae ones just yet. But it is really good to see how they work on Hobonichi paper, thank you!
so excited for this new series! :) been looking for more cool markers to use on my hobonichi with no luck :( so i'm totally gonna get these ones :)
That means so much to me, Diana! Thank you!! 💕🤗 I know Tomoe River paper can be a little finicky, so I hope I'll be able to help you! Hope you enjoy the Clean Color Dot pens -- they're a lot of fun! 🖊️😁
Great video and idea for a series! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much! I appreciate that! 💖🤗
Love Japanese stationary! Ughhhhhhh I want everything
Same here!! 🖊️😂📚
Thanks for this! I was thinking of getting one. This is a great idea for a series!
Thank you so much!! 💖🤗
I use the little A6 notebook for my pen swatches, the slim one. I use the Pilot multi ball for my pen names lol. Great minds think alike hahaha. I get a lot of my supplies from J-subculture, as they use EMS shipping but combine all the items if i use their shopping tab, not the proxy service. Look forward to the rest of your series
Thanks for your comment, Melanie! 💖🤗 That's awesome that you keep a swatch book, too! 👍🏼👍🏼🖊️ I hadn't heard of J-subculture before, but thanks for mentioning it!
Love the series! Waiting for more. Calligraphy markers pls!
Thanks for your support, Despina!! 💖🤗 And thank you for your suggestion, too! 👍🏼🖊️
Loved this video! These pens look great and the colors are different from the norm which is nice to see. Will you be doing a video using your new mildliner brush pens???
Thank you, Tracie!! 💖🤗 I totally agree -- it's nice to see colours that are different from the norm. 👍🏼👍🏼 'Standard' colours get kind of repetitive and aren't as interesting to me. And yes, I'm planning on making a video about the Mildliner Brush pens! 🖊️😁
Humblechan awesome! I will be so happy to see that whenever you have time! Say hello to Wilbur for me and give him hugs and kisses!
Thanks for being so supportive, Tracie! Means a lot to me! 💗💗💗 I'll definitely say hello to Wilbur and give him hugs and kisses for you!! 😄❤️🐕 Much love to your fur kiddos, too!! 💕🤗🐶🐶🐶🐶🐾
Humblechan thank you Chan! Roxie, Barley, Gracie and Zelda say hello to you and Wilbur! Have a great night!
Melt my heart! 🥰 Hope you guys have a great night, too! 💤
I saw these on Tokyo Pen Shop, but ended up getting the Tombow Play Color Dot instead - they're much cheaper 😅 they don't have the flexible/bouncy dot though, it's basically a round stamp, but I figured it would work just fine for my color coding. They stamp a bit too wet for my very cheap varieties of paper though (but no worse than these Kuretake ones), I get some serious bleed through if I'm not very quick and light!
The Kuretake ones are probably more fun in artsy contexts - the flexible dot might well be worth the higher price for the more artistically inclined of us :P
I didn't know how much I needed these pens in my life until I saw this video. Also could you swatch on the Weeks cream colored paper, too? Colors show up differently...😫
LOVE this video, Humble, and love your lettering (right word?) style... :D I own and sometimes use Zig Clean Color Read Brush (24CT) and really like them! Do you store the pens horizontally or vertically? I am never sure... currently storing mine vertically in its case. Thanks! :)
Thank you so much, B!! 💖🤗 I have a set of those as well. For the Dot pens, I think the reason they recommend storing them horizontally is to keep the ink evenly distributed between both pen tips. The Real Brush pens I have don't have anything printed on them about how to store them. I've been storing mine vertically for quite some time and haven't noticed any problems -- they still work just fine. Of course, I'm no expert! 😅 If you're ever worried about them, you could always store them horizontally just to be safe. 🖊️
@@Humblechan Oh, that makes a lot of sense with the two pen tips!! That never occurred to me... LOL :D
have you tried the metallics?
How fun! Love this and very helpful 😃👍❤️
Thank you, Deb!! 💕🤗😸🐾
Humblechan life is more fun when you make videos 🥰😃
You just warmed my heart DOUBLE!! 💖🤗💖 *HUGS!* 💗😹
Humblechan I really mean it-we have never met but you are a dear friend-and these videos are hard work! You do a great job🥰😻
That means so much to me, Deb -- seriously! ❤️❤️❤️ I know I'm not very good at replying all the time, but I just want you to know that you and Jonesy are in my thoughts! 😄💕😸
Thank you so much for sharing, great idea!
Thanks for watching, Lonna! 💖🤗
Humblechan you are so welcome!
Hi! Love your videos. Tokyopenshop out of Iowa carries the dot markers and a whole bunch of stuff from Japan. They ship to Canada!😁.
Thank you so much, Laurel! 💖🤗 I've ordered from Tokyo Pen Shop in the past and have had good experiences, but their price on the Dot pens was just a little too steep for me [a little over $50 CAD after the currency conversion!]. I got them for almost $20 CAD less on Amazon Japan. 🖊️😁
Hahaha I love your use of those pencil boards 😂😂😂
The dot pens look like a lot of fun! I’m not a fan of the Zig real brush pens (which is totally my own fault for being heavy-handed and impatient) but maybe I’ll give these dotty ones a try ❤️
Figure I might as well get another use out of 'em! 😁😆
I like that the Dot pens are something different in my pen stash -- they're like toys for my journaling! 🖊️😹
A better name for the series is Japanese stationary friend or foe to your wallet. LOL This is a great idea for a series. These dot pens look like so much fun.
Is it easy to order off Amazon Japan? I have thought about it but haven’t been brave enough yet. If you need a video idea, you could show how you do it. Hint hint lol
You just cracked me up, Rhea!! HA! 🤣😂😆
I've been meaning to make a video about Amazon Japan ordering tips but never seem to get around to it. I'm lame! 🤦🏻♀️ You would need to create a new account [you can't use the same log-in details that you use for Amazon.com]. You can change the language setting to English, but it doesn't translate everything on the item pages, so I usually have Google Translate open while I'm browsing so that I can translate item descriptions. I would recommend going to www.xe.com also to do a currency conversion before putting an order through. I was kind of nervous the first time I ever ordered from them, but the prices are so much better than some other sites, and the SELECTION...it's insane. They seriously have SO MUCH awesome stationery. 😻😍
Great suggestion, Rhea! Also how much is shipping (on average)? Cheaper than Hobonichi, eh?
JetPens recently added these to their inventory!
How did u get the hobonichi charm??? I searched everywhere for it T.T
I found it on Etsy when someone was selling the ones they had. I managed to get one of each colour but had to act fast because they sold out so quickly!
