  • The NX1 might be one of the best cameras around, but not everything is perfect so here are my top 5 issues with it so far. Also check out the full Samsung NX1 review for all of the latest on this mirrorless camera: learningcameras.com/reviews/ds...

    I have been shooting thousands of stunning landscape photos for 5 years now with my NX1 and I am very happy with the results. I hope it lasts for another 5 years.

    Thanks, Dan. I wasn't aware of these - and a couple of them are deal breakers for me. I appreciate your frankness.

    I do like this camera but I am worried about the codec. And it is a shame Samsung discontinued it

    Hi Dan,
    One simple way to avoid the S lens' large diameter (notably the 16-50 lens) to the top of the tripod on longer 5" video adapter plates is to attach the NX1 to its vertical battery grip (ED‑VGNX01). The 50-150mm S lens will not have this issue since it will have ample clearance via its tripod mount collar. This solution not only adds 2 more inches of clearance for easier access to the lens focal and zoom rings in the front, but it also creates far more freedom for your fingers to pull out the LED screen on the back of the unit. And the fact that it adds more juice to your camera is just one more nicety.

    Not sure how long ago you did this review, but I have the wireless button set to engage movie recording start (issue #1). The others I agree with. I would add this one too - one cannot toggle between the viewfinder and LCD screen once recording has started. That one drives me nuts! Do you ever use the included Samsung Movie Converter? I feel it works just fine, but yes, transcoding is a pain. In firmware 1.40 they finally fixed the AEL for manual mode shooting - finally I can lock my exposure in M mode.

      +Shawn Clay I think firmware 1.2 had just come out when I finished the review. I did end up switching the movie button as well. I did use Samsung Movie converter but preferred rocky mountain. It was a pain most of the time but every so often I travel and go to conventions and have footage I need to upload that day with only a laptop...for those times the transcoding was a HUGE deal.

    I use K-mount adapters, the Novoflex and Kiwifotos, they work great, and the K-mount lenses I use all have aperture rings on them, so it's not a problem at all. For time lapse it's prefered as the aperture isn't opened and shut for every frame, so there is no exposure variation due to the aperture not being exactly the same size every time (this is an issue for all brands).
    The biggest issues for me with the NX1 is that the peaking when using adapted lenses goes off every time the shutter button is touched. So you have to keep turning it on for every shot. I want to be able to turn in on and have it stay on until I turn it off.
    Another, also related to peaking, is that if you record video with the viewfinder, you can't turn peaking on if you are using adapted lenses. So no peaking at all there.
    And peaking itself, it's only on lines vertical to the camera, not the horizontal lines, this makes the peaking less efficient and it gets harder to see where the focus actually is.
    And there is a sensor on the camera that knows if you're looking into the viewfinder, so it automatically moves the image from the rear screen to the viewfinder, and there is a button to choose either to have it only in the viewfinder, the rear screen or automatically change, so why not add one more mode, viewfinder only when you look into it, like the Fujifilm X-T1 has. This saves power as it's only on when you actually look into the viewfinder, and other than that, both the screen and the viewfinder is off. It worked very well for the X-T1 I had before the NX1.

    Surprised you didn't mention OIS but I guess all of your accessories (tripods) and the decent DIS makes it a non-issue for you. Great video.

    I´m not sure I get the "nothing even plays H.265" bit: there´s a bunch of programs that are perfectly capable of playing H.265 video, and have been for a while.

      1650million So technically VLC plays it (which is what I use most) as well but I've struggled (with a pretty fast PC) to play anything other than 1080p and even then it struggles sometimes. It doesn't play 4k at all for me. It's definitely not a fluid process. Have not personally tried Potplayer. Until we have full fluid playback from the major players, there will be an issue. The fact that I just can't send someone a clip and have you play it without downloading 1-2 programs that most people have never heard of and even then you better be on a fast, new computer signals that this is not a process that I can depend on. You really just have to encode...no way around it. It's not horrible most of the time (have it encoding while I sleep or do something else) but sometimes I record at conventions and need to upload footage that night...for those situations, the NX1 stays at home because of this.

      Try to update your VLC. Previously 4K h.265 played but would at times stutter on my i7 4790K CPU and the CPU load was about 80% and with the latest update it plays perfectly and CPU usage is now down to about 35%.

    suggest me which nikon lense is the best and cheap as well as i have a nikon d7200

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  9 років тому

      Aminder Singh The Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4 is probably the best zoom lens under $500 you can buy. The Nikon 50mm f1.8 or f1.4 if you can afford it are also great choices.

    • @Angadsinghkang
      @Angadsinghkang 9 років тому

      LearningCameras.com before your suggest i did buy 18-105 mm VR Telephoto Zoom Lens....what should i do now ..shall i go back to return

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  9 років тому

      Aminder Singh Probably not yet. It's not a bad lens at all but eventually you will probably want to step up to a lens with a wider aperture. The lenses with a ton of zoom range tend to be a little less sharp as well. But like I said, it's not a bad lens at all so I would probably hang on to it since you already have it. Still look at the Nikon 50mm f1.8 though.

      Aminder Singh Awesome. It's tough to find a better all around lens than that for under $500...especially given the wider aperture.

    i have the nx1 and the i havent had the editing problem because i use power director 13 which supports h.265 which is just nperfect for the camera. so when u say "nothing" edits it your wrong. also windows 10 will support it so i guess apple is just falling behind.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  9 років тому

      Nickkk Cannon So instead of nothing, I should say the major players and editors do not support it. Theoretically VLC supports playback but I have had no luck with 4k and still not a fluid experience with 1080p on a fast computer.

    • @nickcann0n
      @nickcann0n 9 років тому

      yeah i would say there are some editors and with the release of windows 10 it will support it

  • @iczyg

    Really disappointed that H.265 hasn't been widely adapted already. It's been quite a while now, and it's a problem that really isn't Samsung's fault. Everyone else just needs to step it up...

    • @lovesvensson
      @lovesvensson 9 років тому

      Simon Ho the problem is that the industry hasn't decided on exactly what form of h.265 that should be the norm, when that get decided im sure that Adobe will start supporting it.

    • @jeffrydemeyer5433
      @jeffrydemeyer5433 9 років тому

      @learningcameras  9 років тому

      Simon Ho I really expected Adobe support by NAB. Instead we got a statement from them saying they were not even working on it due to 'lack of demand'. I'm really doubting anything happens with h.265 in the next few months...especially since we already saw a major Adobe Premiere update with 0 support or hints at future support.

    This is a ''video-centric'' camera only for videographers. Therefore, it is not an issue if the camera starts up in ''photo-mode''!!!!
