    The Panasonic GH4 records 4k, the Speedbooster “expands” your sensor and give your more light, and together with the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 you are able to shoot video with aperture F1.2.
    Here you can get the speedbooster I'm using: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...
    This is the great Sigma 18-35mm lens: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...
    And this is the Panasonic Gh4 (It's getting cheaper! :D): www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...
    The downside with the Panasonic GH4 compared too 5D mark iii and Sony A7S, is the poor video quality when shooting in high ISO. So using a fast lens is necessary when shooting in low light with the GH4. Last year, Metabone released the Speedooster, which is an adapter for Canon EF lenses and micro four third cameras like the GH4. It is not just an adapter. Inside the speedbooster, it’s a special glass that increases your lenses maximum aperture by one stop and also makes lenses o,7x wider. That means it would not only give you more light, but also decrease the cropping inside the camera.
    So after some research, I found out that the best and most practical setup I could get, for the cheapest amount of money, would be too buy the Gh4, the Metabone Speedbooster (MB_SPEF-m43-BM1) and the Sigma lens.
    Many people think that 4k itself is what creates sharp and good looking video, but the video codec is as important, as well as the lens. The Panasonic GH4 has the possibility to record 4K video in 100 Megabit per second, Full HD in 200 Mbps and even 96fps FULL HD 100 Mbps. The Canon 5D mark ii, which was my latest camera, captures video in 42mbps, and compared to the Canon 5D mark iii which captures video in 92 mbps, you can really see the difference.
    You can modify the picture profiles in the GH4, and you also have presets like Cinelike D, which makes your image flat and easier to color grade in post production. It has focus peeking and zebra stripes, which helps a lot during shooting.
    The flip screen is genius, and the viewfinder is a must if you are shooting in bright sunlight and don’t have any external viewfinders.
    On most of the inexpensive cameras like the Canon 550D or the new 750D, you got an APS-C sensor, which is a bit bigger and gives you shorter depth of field then the GH4 sensor. On a full frame sensor you get even shorter depth of field, so it’s great for film-making. So is there any chance for the micro four third sensor to get short enough depth of field so we can achieve the film-look? Yes, and that is one of the benefits with the Speedbooster. The Metabones Speedbooster concentrates the light entering the lens into a smaller area, which decreases the focal length and increases the aperture on the smaller sensor. It’s like increasing the sensor to an APS-C size. That means if you are using a lens designed for APS-C sensors, like the sensor inside the Canon 750D, it would not crop. So a 50mm APS-C lens would therefore be a 50mm lens on the GH4 with the speedbooster, and still you would get the extra stop of aperture. So after I did some research I went for the APS-C lens Sigma 18-35mm with aperture F1.8. That means, when I’m using it with the speedbooster and the gh4, I can film with aperture 1.2. So the low light problem is no longer a big issue.
    So as a conclusion, I think this setup is exactly what I need. The Sony A7s is a really good competitor, but it doesn’t have the 4k recording inside the camera and it doesn’t have the same slow motion functions. You are able to shoot 4k with the Sony, but then you need an external recorder which is really expensive.
    I can’t wait to test the camera even more. There will be a bunch of new videos coming up really soon and if you have any questions, feel free to ask them below, or at my Facebook-page.

      The quality depends on the primes you have.
      Vintage is usually softer, esp. at the edges, but thus more cinematic.

    I am about to purchase the same setup as yours, GH4 + Speedbooster + Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 and I really need your help.
    I done some research and I found that many people are having issues with the "vignette effect" when using that adapter.

    Hey man, i stumbled across your channel and i think its great. you have created some killer tutorials that are easy to understand. I just ordered a GH4 (it will be here tomorrow!) with the speedbooster to shoot with my my L-series lenses. My question is this: how are you working with your 4k video and reg 1080 video in the same timeline in premiere? if i try working with mulitple size video, such as 1080 & 720 (from my iphone) for instance, it will be smaller in the video monitor unless i enlarge it, and vice versa depending on the settings i choose when i create the project. Any advice would be much appreciated! thank you all you do!

      Josh Petersen Hi Josh! Thanks :) Usually I film in 4K with my GH4. If I want to add 1080 video to the timeline, I just insert it to the timeline, right click and press "adjust to frame size". I think you can turn the "adjust the frame size" on in the settings menu, so it automatically resizes all clips you add to the timeline. Good luck!

      If you dont trust me for it : (last paragraph) =D

      50 or 70 is quite the difference, watch out when giving people information !

    • @sirzebra
      @sirzebra 9 років тому

      I know, I'm talking about The FF equivalent for the sigma.
      Its an APS-C Lens, so the
      18-35mm is equivalent to 27mm-52,5mm on a Full Frame sensor.
      If the kipon (i dont know about it) doesnt change the focal lenght by magnifying or reducing it, then its still 27mm-52,5mm FF equivalent =)

    • @sirzebra
      @sirzebra 9 років тому

      I think you messed up by converting the focal lenght by 2.X, when its only a 1.5 crop factor.
      The sigma is a Canon APS-C EF lens, not a m4/3 lens that direclty mounts on the GH4.
      (18x2 =36, while 18x1.5 = 27mm)

    There is just one question: Can you use the lens with focal length of 18mm? I've heared that the Sigma lense is not made for full format. So with the speedbooster it could have some strange look in the edges of the picture. Have you ever recognised something like that or do you think i can use my sigma 18-35mm without hesitating in any situation?

    I don't understand how this works.
    The Sigma is designed for APS-C sensors. The Speedbooster mentioned is to convert full-frame EF to MFT. How is there no vignetting on the shots without cropping?
    0.71 is the factor mentioned at the website of the metabone. APS-C * 0.71 is smaller than the MFT sensor. So there should be vignetting.
    Please help, we'd like to shoot in 4K, we already have the sigma and we'd really like to buy the GH5.
    How is this working?

    • @herranton
      @herranton 5 років тому

      An image circle that will vignette on ff can still be substantially bigger than needed to cover apsc. Given that the sigma lens is has an image circle to cover Nikon crops at 28.4mm if you multiply by the focal reduction ( 0.71) you get coverage for _at least_ 20.1mm sensors. The gh4 sensor is 21.6mm so we just assume that the sigma image circle is a bit larger than what it needs to be. It still wouldn't cover full frame but it could, in theory (and apparently practice too, if the video is too be believed) work just fine. I doubt sigma built a lens where the edge of the image circle is just barely bigger than the sensor. I suspect they added a bit of wiggle room so that if Nikon changes there standard in the future just a bit, the lens will still work.
      (And all this makes no difference if sigma designed the lens for actual apsc which is considerably bigger than nikon's at 30ish mm. Then the math works just fine).

    Great video man. I just subscribed. I don't know if you get paid by Metabones, but can you give me your honest opinion? The matabones speedbooster is expensive as shit and there are some competitors on the market for around 100 bucks. Do I pay for the brand "metabones" or is there really a quality plus for their speedbooster?
    Your video examples are so beautiful. What program did you use for color correction? And did you always use the Sigma 18-35mm in the video examples or did you use one of your EF-lenses as well?
    I would really appreciate it, if you or anybody else could answer me. Thanks guys. Have a lovely day.

    • @peterjackson4517
      @peterjackson4517 8 років тому +2

      DUde Just do some research my god. The competitors adapters are adapter with no glass element meaning you will still get the 2x crop factor from the sensor. Jesus christ. It amazes me how uninformed people are. Just do the research like everyone else instead of relying on other people.

    • @firworks
      @firworks 8 років тому +1

      There are several other competitors (Zhongyi, Roxsen, Fotasy) that do have lenses to reduce the crop factor. There is even a competitor that has the additional electronics to allow the lens to send data back and forth to the camera body (Aputure Lens Regain)

    "together with the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 you are able to shoot video with aperture F1.2. " it's not really that good, sorry. You also have to multiply the aperture with the crop factor. Which is: 2 x 0,71 x 1.8 = 2.556. So compared to fullframe the lens is like a f2.5! It's not really a problem though!

    • @kilicruz988
      @kilicruz988 7 років тому

      wrong, aperture is not the same as deph of field!

    • @JeremyGalloway
      @JeremyGalloway 7 років тому +2

      Aperture does not change regardless of sensor size, because it is just a ratio. 1.8 is 1.8. What DOES change is the total amount of light used to make the image. Shooting 2.8 on a FF camera results in the same amount of light as f/1.8 on a smaller cropped sensor. So in the original comment, the total amount of light on the sensor at 1.2 is comparable to a much higher f-stop on a FF camera.

    • @MoseLaura
      @MoseLaura 7 років тому

      Jeremy Galloway that's what I was trying to say. So what Tony and Chelsea Northrup was doing was telling that to see the same results as FF both depth of field and amount of light: You have to apply the crop factor to the aperture as well.

    4k.... 4k... 4k,.. it does not matter what camera you have, people that use the word 4K too much will never make anything good in their life's, they focus too much on technology and less on filmmaking itself. 5D2 5D3 GH4 A7S are all great camera's, peope need to stop making excuses and say OOooh i need 4k or oooh and i need this lens and that.
    No stop BULLSHITTING and make a movie, your GH4 will become obselete in 2 years tops, get yourself out of this cycle and start making movies

      Rebassed while I do enjoy learning about moving from a pure video camera shooter Canon xa20 to a DSLR option, (looking to buy a GH$) what you say is completely correct. it's the Ansel Adams effect get images today on old technology. I have to laugh because we have 3 iphone6s in my house so we can effectively do a hell of a multicamera shoot without buying a thing - just use my H4n Zoom and Sennheiser shotgun MKE 600 and we are good to go tell a tale.

      Rebassed I'm comfortable compartmentalizing the two different conversations. The camera gear is a fun, left-brained subject matter to discuss (to a point). But no one will care if your story isn't compelling. Interest in the gear doesn't mean you discount story as an important thing.
      In the same way, I like talking about car engines, performance, gas mileage, style and safety with a real car guy. It doesn't distract me at all from thinking about where I want to go in the car.
