  • For the last few weeks on evenings and weekends i have been working on this 15 drawer cabinet. It is made from reclaimed Ipe wood, a laminated pine panel and 9mm hardwood ply. Total cost was about £100 for the plywood, the laminated panel and the name plate holders.

You know there is some precision going on here when you close one drawer and the air pressure pushes open the drawer below it. Just beautiful workmanship, Kris. 🙂👍

I grew up in High Wycombe, then a big furniture making town. I was told that, one draw opening when another is pushed in, is the mark of a piece of furniture made by a cabinet maker, rather than just a carpenter.

That is brilliant. One of my great joys in life is using someone else's junk to make something. I have had luck stopping tear out by using painters tape on the edge I am cutting. It must be great fun to make something small after so many large projects. Thanks for sharing.

That cabinet is just gorgeous, Kris. Thank you for adding a new wood word to my vocabulary - 'ipe'. Obviously, the person who chucked that wood was also ignorant of its value, but one would think that the thumbnail test (if not the density) should have shown them that it was not rotten and worth holding on to.

I had a friend with a huge deck on his house. He tore the deck off and threw it away because it had turned Gray and was rickety. It was cypress wood and all it needed was a little love, and it would have been enough beautiful wood I could have made furniture for an entire house. It made me sick to know it was in a landfill. All I could say was "if only I had known". Great job, and so glad you found that ipe before it was hauled off to the landfill. Regards, Solomon

Kris, I've cut a lot of plywood with veneer and I've learned that the best way to avoid chipping the veneer is to sandwich the good piece of wood between two scrap pieces. And sandwich then tightly so the veneer can't go anywhere.

@@FruitSnacksyo Its been a pattern i have noticed from the start. the videos that take me the longest and that im the most proud of always do the worst. This video was a very high labour video. about 5-6 hours of editing, maybe 10hours of filming. it took 4 hours to upload. the item itself has 60hours of work in it. I also had to take the whole set of drawer back out and move the cabinet back on to my workbench to get a good picture of it (as i forgot while it was up there) So a video like this really dose take a lot of work. But, today we have a storm and if i grabbed the Camera and just walked up the hill and filmed my steam it would get twice the views and take me about an hour to do. UA-cam is funny like that. But im proud of this video so if it dose not do as well i dont mind. im still proud of it.

When I see work like this I'm glad you repurposed the 'scrap' wood, but also makes me wonder why we have to fell the trees in the first place. I realise there is real-world demand but I'm sure these trees are not 'managed' in any meaningful way. Beautiful piece of furniture. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe and keep up the good work.

I would never buy wood like this, i only ever get it from old sleepers. Like this stuff out of a skip. If not i would use my own oak, ash or local grown and managed larch as im quite sure a huge amount of tropical hardwoods are cut illegally
