F1 key best bitwig feature it pops an overlay of the thing you chose like an effect or something BUT the overly is big shows you the knobs etc and what they do BUT ITS LIVE twist a knob in the F1 overlay and the thing behind it, say its the Multiband eq or one of the VST instruments the controls move! So you dont have to go out of the overlay help to try what its telling you it does. tweak till your happy then F1 out of it. Its brilliant

Great comprehensive video! I think this is an exercise we all should take now and again. With your current DAW, list out the things you love, and the things you can't stand. It's a great way to take stock of whether your current tools are helping or hindering -- and if there's another toolkit (DAW) that could fit better ...

Melodyne takes pitch editing to a new level. It’s polyphonic as well as monophonic and if you pay for the full version there are some insane sound design possibilities that are not anywhere else.

    my favorite bigwig features:
    - you search for 'kick' in your samples, it will find kicks even if the file name does not contain the word 'kick'
    - you select multiple tracks or clips and you can edit all of them at once
    - you can have a send effect inside a group
    - the stack modulator
    - you can put the time shift tool into anything. also it has a little flux capacitor which is priceless.

I changed from ableton to bitwig 2 yrs or so ago and having so much fun with it, worth the time and money. Secretly I was hoping for that you'll try it out once, but see the transition now makes me happy :) now I don't have to choose between my favourite daw and my favourite tutorials on YT...they successfully merged into ONE. quite a few good psytrance YT content creator/artist you can find nowadays, but the level where you operate and the way you explain ideas/techniques are really exceptional! I can't wait to see what the future brings and what you come up with in bitwig :) keep up the fantastic work and thanks for non-stop educating us!

Yeah !!! Early adopter here and I got to say , it’s really come into it’s own in the last few versions. So many powerful tools built in and the only thing limiting you is your imagination. Looking forward to seeing how you get on . Instrument selector + specific modulators is one of my favourite tricks atm.

I did the exact contrary. . . I jumped from bitWig to Cubase 12 and I am happier now... Cubase is eons more configurable and for the midi controllers, is a dream come true.
    About the issues you comment,
    - The file mangaement, I just open new quick projects from any templete I´ve created, and choose my "Weekly" folder.... and that´s it... start recording music.... if I want to keep it, I just save it and assign a name; if the week folder was empty, and I don´t save the project, no folder is created and no files stays on my Hard Drive.... so... I can´t see why this would be an issue.
    - I have also a beatstep pro and many Moogs and I get to work with all of them sending the Clock from Cubase to them..... I haven´t tried Cubase as a slave, bit there is the setting.
    - Midi Timing works perfect for me... I have Riffer and in another track I load Vital just as you did, receiving from Riffer... it works perfectly fine as it does in BitWig, and in Logic Pro X.
    - @39:38 No DAW can compete with this BitWig feature... this is a total win for super Modular BitWig. For Sound design and Virtual Modular (with the Grid), I believe BitWig the best by far.
You keep saying about the midi timing. It should be checked out, to me it works super fine, very much solid and on time.
    - @50:10 right on. I don´t like that also, just as Universal Audio, you have to filter all that. I´ve created my own settings and filters and left all that junk out of sight.
    - The SandBox in Bitwig is SUPERB! I hope Cubase catch up on this.
    - The launching of BitWig also is very fast, compared to Cubase... in Bitwig it feels a lighter load because it doesn´t scann ALL YOUR VSTs and computer files as Cubase does... I hate that of Cubase... it feels intrusive all the time.
@55:26 sounds like that old DelayLama 👍
Having said this, to me Cubase is superior to bitWig and it goes much better in my workflow... but I will not leave BitWig nor Logic Pro X..... Bitwig the best for modular virtual and soundesign. Logic Pro X it is good at everything, but feels old and glitchi. Cubase, totally my "home" now, the best all around and it is super for composing, for electronic music, analog modular synths, .... globally it just makes me more creative.

Thanks for the great response, yep I guess a lot of it comes down to preference. Having been with Cubase for over a decade and on the fence with bitwig since it's initial launch, I can say things are happening much faster on the BW side, in fact not much groundbreaking stuff has come from Cubase for a while now, just a new plugin here and there tbh. My personal focus is sound design and modular concepts, so I guess that's where BW shines. Regarding the timing thing, I suspect you're on a mac? I need to check on my Mac, but I remember it being an issue for over a decade now, it could be down to the tempo or how much each of our processes require absolute sample accuracy?

    • @MarcoPolux
      @MarcoPolux Рік тому +2

@@DashGlitch @Dash Glitch Yes, definitively for your goals of sound design and virtual modular... BitWig is a total winner, I still love Bitwig!
Right about the upgrades also, who really cares of new stock libraries or more VSTs? but the upgrade that lured me back to Cubase was the Midi Remote Controllers capabilities that are the best in a DAW, the Visuals (to my eyes Cubase is great), the Controll Room, the Midi capabilities, Macros and VariAudio..... the list continues for me, but I have to mention. the ditch of that darn dongle also.
Yes, I am on a Mac and the timing for the clock and midi is great, I dare to say even better than BitWig and Logic Pro X, because with them, at least in my setup, something feels a little glitchi. The latency compensation that Cubase has is superb, and I record a lot with external gear alongside with midi controllers (like my Vdrums) and the midi and audio is almost to the cent... rarely I have to manually correct.
Great videos man! I´ve learned a lot of sound design in your channel. I subscribed years ago with those videos, I guess, about bass growl in Serum, and Astrix and InfectedMushroom.... techno... 🍺

Cubase user since 1990 checking in. ;) Awesome tutorial. The open effects architecture of Bitwig and the ability to include VSTs in modular fashion in grid patches is incredible. 44:50 there is a workaround (to an extent) for this in Cubase; by setting up a controller lane and drawing in or recording via midi controller the control info you want, and then mapping it onto where you want it to go. You can copy-paste bars of that info quite easily also. So you could simulate (in a clumsy kind of way) various LFO types by programming in the data in controller lanes. I never had any timing issues with any of that, but remembering back to the old Cubase VST versions there would be crazy artifacts from sharp volume control sweeps.

I noticed both Bitwig and Cubase now have Rent-to-Own options on Splice. Amazing time to be alive! I was thinking of trying out Cubase but it seems most of the Cubase features you liked are things I have in Reaper and miss dearly in other DAWs. I'm tempted by Bitwig though. Great video, thank you! I was a Cubase user on an old "cheesegrater" 2009 Mac Pro when I was doing orchestral work for media. I still have that machine but it's become too old to upgrade so I've now got a Mac Studio and I have Bitwig on there. My original plan was to try Bitwig alongside Cubase, but since I no longer plan to do any significant amount of orchestral work, the reason to have Cubase is sort of disappearing. The more I use Bitwig the better I like it, but I do agree with your closing comments: Variaudio and Control Room would be really good to have. Also, I was surprised to hear that Bitwig has no way of inserting devices post-fader. It's not something I'd do very often but it's just surprising it isn't supported anyway.

Welcome Dash, I switched to BW a couple of years ago, and am now convinced that like beer, BW makes you funnier and more attractive to women.
    Favourite features for me
    1. Dedicated fx channels in groups
    2. Audio side chain modulator, side chain anything. I now tend to duck many of my channels by side chaining EQ bands rather than simply volume. Gives loads of space in the mix
    3. The FX and synth selectors. Especially with randomised switching
    4. All the other containers I was surprised watching EClip and hearing him complaining that cubase had none. Saving presets of containers is awesome
    5. The grid.

Great video, Dash. This is the first video of yours I'm seeing as a Cubase user and you're the one that convinced me to get Bitwig. Mind you, I will not be changing from Cubase to Bitwig as I honestly feel the things you miss kinda outweigh the things you don't. The audio processing capability, customization and Vari-Audio are unparalleled (I hate the folder system and MIDI timing too though). So I want to replace FL with BW as a ReWire/plugin I use in Cubase. There's apparently a work around for this since BW doesn't have ReWire and isn't recognised by CB as a plugin. But clearly Bitwig is more streamlined than FL and gives Ableton a run for its money - it's actually like FL and AL had a baby!
I feel like the new wave of DAWs is great for non-linear processes and sound design while the classic ones like Cubase and Logic are more linear. So I want the advantage of both but there is no 1 DAW that can do both equally. Wonder if anyone else feels what I'm talking about...
PS: My work around to avoid creating multiple unnecessary projects is to just create a file using an empty template and when I'm done playing around, testing new plugins or creating new presets/etc. I just close the project without saving.

You know that is the first time I've heard someone vocalize those problems with Cubase and midi recording. I bought Cubase years ago to record and co-ordinate my synth playing (I'm primarily a piano player), but eventually abandoned it completely because of the problems with midi you described. I thought maybe it was me and I was doing something wrong, and I tried a couple of different midi interfaces at the time including an expensive MOTU one. It was enough of a problem for me to completely abandon even attempting to use midi to record my playing, as I thought Cubase was regarded as amongst the best midi software recording systems available.
After a big break from using my computer to record music, I am getting into it again, and the first thing I did was to update Cubase, and the problems remained, but I saw Bitwig, played around with, bought the limited version, and found my midi problems cleared up, and I finally realized the problem was not me or my hardware setup, it was with Cubase.
The whole situation has for some reason reminded me of a picture I once saw on Tumblr when it was cool that said something like "feeling depressed? It might not be you, you just might be surrounded by arseholes."

The one fuction I rate over every other function in a DAW, especially important and helpful when changing from one DAW to another, is the ability to create your own key commands for all the functions.
That’s how my switch from Cubase to Logic in the late 90’s went so smooth. Did a text search for the function I was looking for in the key commands window, changed the key command to whatever it was in Cubase and could then just forget about in whatever menu or sub menu that function was to be found.
Also great when coming over to somebody elses Logic DAW - just load my own key commands and then ready to go…

The development in FL Studio of the chord track is quite exciting though . I would like a better automation system with Cubase . the offline processing is for sure great, but I don't think it's something easy to add to a DAW. If you use any kind of instrument in BW you can add an fx inside the instrument itself so "bounce in place" will add the desired fx only on the selected part. In this way you also can add chains of fx and save them as presets. You just need a few clicks more to delete the fx from the instrument afterwards, but it's still coming very close to what you can do in Cubase. Coming from Ableton, for me Bitwig offers lots more of customisation (not at the levels of Cubase, sure). On one side is great but has also a big side effect: if you customise too much your workspace you will have troubles when you use the same DAW on someone's else pc, or the opposite. I think it's better to limit settings that change too much your DAW experience. I think it like a car...if you use someone's else car the feeling is different but you can still drive because the steering wheel and the pedals are there where every other car has :D. As you say, for track version, probably you will never miss if you never used before...I mean u can use clip launcher to do the same as track version but you can't do track version to do all the things clip launcher does ;) I don't understand the comparison between CurveEQ and the native Analyzer of Bitwig...just use CurveEQ on Bitwig, or am I missing something? :) Control Room: yes cool, but you can easily do it with Bitwig as it has a much more powerful audio routing system and save it as a template.I use RME analyser and Sonarworks, if I would take the audio from the master channel the spectrum in the RME analyser would be wrong. So I take everything coming from the master channel, but before the SW plugin and I send it to an other audio or fx channel and from there to my sound card where I take the audio to analyse, while on the speakers I have the audio treated with SW or a limiter. I think this is kind how also Control Room works! Sorry for long post, but I always was confronted with people using Cubase and always felt this missing things that actually are not missing but just different approach. Knowing what Bitwig can offer more than Cubase, and knowing now what for you are the things that you will miss more, I can only tell you made the best choice to switch to bitwig! You will see that very soon you will not miss these things anymore and I hope I could help you to make this process even faster :D :D

Really glad to see Bitwig continue with excellence. When they first started out, they had a steep hill to climb with Logic being $200 and Live coming into its own. I'd be very interested to know how it compares to Live. Looks to be a similar flow. And also to know how it compares to Logic. Great overview Dash!! Thanks.

    • @DaKingof
      @DaKingof Рік тому +1

The only glaring differences I've noticed are how automation works and the built in devices are a lot more mature in Live as of now. Other than that, they are pretty comparable for the most part, apart from the workflow improvements Bitwig brings to the table. I'm sure there is much more, but that's just what I've noticed after being away from Live for a good 4-5 years now in favor of Bitwig.

    • @BappinProductions
      @BappinProductions Рік тому +6

The main difference is that Bitwig isn’t shit. It basically does everything that Live does with less BS. It has plug-in sand boxing so plugins can’t crash the audio engine. It has properly implemented PDC on the entire signal path ie between adjacent devices, not just between channels. Bitwig has Bounce in Place and hybrid tracks, so you can play bounced audio on the original synth channel, this is superior to Live’s freeze flatten workflow where you either lose the original midi going into audio or you have to keep backups which clutter the project. You can fully disable devices and even whole channels in Bitwig (stops latency being reported too, unlike Live).
Basically it’s glaringly obvious that Bitwig is a proper evolution of the Live paradigm, which isn’t being held back by legacy code and or management issues.

One thing i must point out is that cubase has a whole section for "project synchronization setup" where one can set midi clock destinations and external sync, tbh I've never had issues with midi sync, i do have a RME interface though that has lank good latency, the only things I've had issues with were the beatstep pro and keystep, I don't use Arturia products anymore as they are cheap and not good for doing what they are made for, so maybe try the syncing again, I'm not sure why you have these issues in cubase tbh, for me its the most rock solid with latency, also check if you have asio guard on as that adds another 20ms latency, anyways, these are my experiences, and I know you know your stuff..

Hey Dash. Fantastic content. I am cubase user, and you've revealed some cool things in cubase that I never knew before; I have only ever used offline processing to do very simple tasks. I also have the 8 track version of Bitwig and fully intend on dipping my toes in..... Couple of things, I also use Riffer and I'm pretty sure I don't experience those timing issues, but I will certainly check again. If you export the midi from riffer it's certainly locked. I do get sync issues with Stochas which is a similar type of VSTi, but that's when it's out by exactly a bar; I always attributted that to the VSTi rather than cubase. Also you can now sync to an external source, this was introduced in 12 I think, page 1256 of the manual. (Transport >> activate external sync).

Wow, coming from the standpoint of a metal person - I really need to get one of these nicer DAWs. Especially being very new to electronic music and just being experimental at the moment. I basically have gotten very stuck on, and used to super oldschool style stuff that lacks these awesome extremely useful features, and actually, you would be probably surprised how much time I spend doing everything almost entirely manually. It takes me so long to do all this, I’ve just gotten used to doing everything that way. I think that’s probably a lot of my limitation as well. Having trouble trying to re-create some of my favorite electronic genres using the tools I have awhich are quite simplistic in the end. Eg I have actually watched a few of your other videos on psytrance, which is one of the most fascinating genres I’ve ever heard, and even though I followed everything to a T, nothing was coming out like it should have. I think part of that problem is probably because I’m using software that just wasn’t intended for that kind of music. I think I finally reached my limit now with that 😂 The other is just ADHD.

You can easily store everything from your key commands, preferences, colour schemes, UI Visibility toggles, etc onto a profile which you can carry around in a thumb drive. There have been multiple occasions when I had to format my mac and reinstall the OS. Setting up everything from scratch again would be crazy. You might even forget many if the workflow settings you had set up. In that case, you can just load up the saved profile and boom. You’re back in line again. @@croay no, it's less than enough. the purpose of freezing is to free up resources but still getting the same sound, so deactivating tracks can't be compared. now bouncing is pretty similiar to freezing yes, but still problematic. freezing only temporarily frees resources. it can be unfreezed at any time to give back control. bounce in place overwrites what's on the track, so you can't use it, especially not if some other track uses midi sidechain from that track, as it then contains audio only. bounce itself is also problematic because it renders to a new track, so if other tracks have audio sidechain to that track you have to manually reroute that now, and reroute back if you wanna use the original track again. that is at least not impossible, but just a bad workflow. the strength of the bounce feature is imo that it swiftly lets you commit to your sounddesign experiments. the purpose of freezing however is to enable people to make bigger projects without losing resources. but especially with big projects it's important that the daw gives you a maximum overview and doesn't add even more things to worry about. so using bounce as a pseudo freeze is not productive. if you haven't tried cubase yet, do that. and make it huge. you'll notice the freeze feature gives you a calm mind at all project sizes, until you run out of ram. but at that point my cpu would have been crushed 10x already without freeze

@@DaKingof Hey bro.. So I've got the trial going with ALL downloadable content installed... Didn't realise you didn't need it LOL... anyway... Need some learning vids... Is Baphometrix a good start or can you recommend any other 'Bitwig beginner courses'? Coming from Ableton Suite 11 and am ok with that... just seems Bitwig is alot different LOL. Cheers

Bitwig is more complicated if you're used to the Cubase workflow.

I am currently in the process of switching over from Reaper to Bitwig. Reaper is a great DAW, but Bitwig has so many features that seem perfectly suited for the type of music I'm creating (ambient, meditative). It hasn't been a terribly hard switch, though there are still some subjects I've not figured out. The main issue I'm currently having is understanding how to repitch a sample without changing the tempo, or vice versa. That's easy in Reaper. If anyone knows how this is done in Bitwig, please share!!

You need to use one of the warp modes/algorithms other than repitch or raw. I generally go for Stretch HD, this allows you to pitch and timestretch independantly. The settings are in the inspector panel for each sample, but in the settings you can set how it loads by default.

@@DashGlitch Thank you! I have mine set to import all clips as raw, and I haven't really figured out the differences between the other modes. Your description makes sense, though. I will try it out.
