- The old John Deere 8640 roars to life in this tractor video. More work around the equipment yard as the 2020 California winter stays hot. We weld tillage discs and move our land-planes out of the mud. I explain how we use the ridger in the spring and why we need to burn the levees in our rice fields.
Here is the episode I mentioned:

Love to hear 8640 running..
Oh yeah!
Never thought I'd be interested in rice farming but knowing you love what you do keeps me coming back to your channel to learn more. Your not just a farmer you're an educator.
Danny, glad you’re enjoying the channel and learning a bit about rice farming. It’s nice messages like this that keep me grinding and having fun with the videos.
-Matthew
Don't have Facebook so I'm glad you still make this great content for UA-cam!
All good David! The better content is on UA-cam. You’re not missing much.
-M.
Back in the 60s and 70s a family name Bevis I think was growing rice in Central America big falls ranch was the place they did a good job at it
A very cool old JD
JOB JOB JOB
Please keep that beast on the farm! 💪 When everything needs a certified dealer only oil change, blue def and a yearly subscription for the supercomputer software, you'll do anything to have that JD back! Great video, Matt. This is gonna be a good year, I can feel it 👍
Haha! All great points, David. And I hope you’re right-it’s going to be a good year. We just need more rain and snowpack.
-M.
Amen brother. Just because it has a computer controller on it doesn't make it better or more reliable.

O
Ppll ol I'll
Man, I love your way to explain things
Thank you very much, Aldo.

That has to be the roughest looking john deere in all the farming videos I watch. But It is still a diamond in the rough.
It’s never been waxed. Proud of it.
-M.
@@Ricefarmingtv Thats ko your not stuck up like most john deere owners either
Just curious. Have you ever seen any farmers do videos of them, themselves waxing their tractors or combines? Or are they just magically waxed in all the videos?
@@Ricefarmingtv larson farms and cole the corn star clean and wax over winter
Love rice and now nice to see a rice farmer. Thanks.
I love the more frequent updates. I wanted to mention your ridger is called a levee plow here in the delta. Keep up the great work!
Matt Love your videos and showing how California farmers have to deal with. Huge Fan of your. Hello from Firebaugh Ca
Bill from the uk dont grow rice but eat it came this way of mr Paydirt, really enjoy your vids and content well put together thanks👍👌

@@SmallMartingale yep he was talking about a few of the sites he follows, wrote them all down and went and look .All good stuff👍
Man you have been cranking out the the videos lately. I love it! Great job dude.
Thanks John! Really trying to give “as it happens” updates this year rather than retrospectives.
-M.
Love the more aggressive upload schedule
Thank you, Shawn. Hoping I can keep it up during groundwork/planting.
-M.
Id love to see the other 4wd John Deere working
Ouch! A vertical-up weld on that long corner crack.. Those were always tough welds for me. I wish you the best of luck with that one!
Helo from Serbija!
Yay Serbija! Thanks for the message.
-Matthew
Lmao I never caught on to the welcome to the rice feilds joke until today! At least I really hope it's a parody from the original joke, I mean if not or you didn't mean to it still made me laugh!
Matt a like. Rice Farming So different from midwest corn/soybean farming. THX
Hi Rick! Glad you’re enjoying. Let me know if you have any questions.
-M.
Got n 8430 love that old girl
Loving the videos Matt. Keep them coming
Thank you, Jan!
-M.
Ty . Another great insight on rice farming
Hello Mathew,
waiting for the Land Planer maintenance and working in the field video . Hello to Pops too.
Keep up the good work Matt
Thanks for sharing 👍👍
I drove one for a few years on the farm growing up. The foot throttle was always a bit odd on a tractor of its size. It ended up traded in on a Steiger kp1360. Its still on the farm.
Love your videos and just liked your Facebook page.
Awesome! Thanks so much!
-Matthew
I have worked for a company that we would weld up the items they where using. We would V the break weld grind the weld flat and plate over because the metal where the weld was will turn hard and can crack again which for our company can mean more down time.
I'm from northern Michigan. I find it very interesting. Our weather is a LOT different from yours. Hi temp today is expected to be around 15 low tonight of 6 . We got 6 inches of snow yesterday
A nother great vid!
Thank you, Gene!
-M.
Nice tractor!
Of course it started right up it's a John Deere
I like your style of communication Slager. I can tell you love farming and all about it. I hate you are selling the 8640 it will make someone a very nice machine. Seems like you have given up on an old warhorse that is no longer needed when it saved you last year. Yes I know it doesn't pay but as soon as you dump it it will come back to bite you. If you keep it around the tires will rot off and it will fill with water. Yahya yahda.
Great video Matt as always. Do pop's thank you guys can start early this year on the dirt work?
Wo..big tractor🚜👌🏼
Do a equipment tour
This video was extra smokey.
I’m really enjoying all your smoke related comments. Thank you!
-M.
G'day
yay Banana Slugs! 😀👍

Very nice, Jenny!
good stuff. do you have to call for a burn permit/burn day check in butte county? thats the process in yuba, they're pretty strict.
You fly those crop duster from out by knights landing?
Hi John, our crop dusters fly out of West Biggs. Williams Flying Service. We are about an 1 1/2 North of Knights Landing in Biggs/Richvale.
-Matthew
Look at his boots and his pants
Pretty snazzy, eh?
-M.
great vid looks like its startin to be a great year , do you need permit for burning
How often do you have to replace the boxes in the levees
Eric, I'm answering this question in the next episode!
Rice Farming TV thanks
Grwat video matthew. Hope this isnt too personal. But at one time did you havr more green machinery and switch to red? Lol also any plans or thoughts on trying class tractors? Thanks for sharing
Wich tractor is best john deere ,case ih, Massey Ferguson......... in your opinion
Mustafa Nameer Fixed frame? Fendt, and only Fendt honestly. They’re in a league of their own. Articulated JD leads the pack, articulated tracked the CaseIH Quadtrack stands out instantly.
Don't sell that old girl it still runs good
A rigger is just a big boarder disc?
Hi Daniel, a ridger is comprised of two wings with 3 blades on each. In operational position they form an upside down V. It helps build the levees back up. I’ll have a video on it soon.
-Matthew
@@Ricefarmingtv ok thankyou, out here on AZ I know them as a boarder disc. We use them in are hay fields. Ours are not nearly that big
How old is this beautiful machine?
Where are you in California?
Just let you know that your oil been in there for three years just saying
How do you level the rice field before planting the rice seeds.
With a land-plane...there’s one going in this episode:

-Matthew
If you start to practice welding someday you could be good to.
Amen, PAB! I need to get on it.
-M.
Good work . But why you get only one crop in a year .
Thanks Santam. Because the winter is just too cold for a second crop. You get two crops?
-M.
@@Ricefarmingtv yes we get two crops . This time is for wheat . In summer we sow rice and Some people sow cotton . Some people which sow poteto in winter, they get three crop a year .
How much do you want for that John Deere 8640 l want to use it to pull a miskin scraper...
Chris, I think he has it listed for $13k.
-Matthew
I’ll sell the 8640 shown in this vid to ya for 10k
👍🇦🇺🍻
Why don’t you restore the 8640?
I think ur tractors need New paint trust me it will look better
I’m sure they’d look better, but will they run better?
-M.
@@Ricefarmingtv not from just paint 😅
Fast comment
I linked to you in my latest video, as we were flying vintage aircraft over your fields. Always enjoy your stuff! ua-cam.com/video/Tws5RXkVRnQ/v-deo.html
Rat holes .... what’s the biggest rat you’ve seen out on the farm?
Muskrats get fairly large. Rats, otters and crawdads all burrow through the levees. This a hole system of pathways through there. Add water flow and it washes them out, making them larger or blows the levee. So it’s not the size of the rat it’s all that together. Not trying to do extra work. Trying to do good work.
-M.
Rice Farming TV ahh that totally makes sence! Thank you for your reply I thought I was gonna hear this question in the question video but I’m happy you found you phone
I’m surprised the state lets you burn!! You guys have way too much regulation out there!! Imo Kansas is bad enough!!!! Too many do gooders in high places!!!!!!! How bad is farm fuel there?? 2.00 here right now delivered to farm .......
Hi Karl, we are certainly regulated with the burning. We need to check in with the county air quality control board on a daily basis for this type of burning. Don’t want to smoke out towns or the big city. We bought some red diesel the other day for $2.17 delivered-pretty good!
-Matthew
Rice Farming TV ya I hear that!! A person doesn’t want to annoy them! Ya fuel is a decent price so far!!! Really enjoy your videos, as no rice in Kansas!!! Thanks.....
