I was sad when they finally pulled the plug on 1800. I particularly wanted a South-East Asia instance - the Princess would have made an ideal introductory character to it. Some tips for anyone new to the franchise: The best way to learn how 1800 works is to play 1404. In 1800, get to Enbesa as soon as possible, obtain a white flag and start trading watches from Archie to Ketema - thereafter money is no problem. Get hold of Costume Designers from Eli - no need to ship cotton (until you get into really fancy stuff later.) In the opposite direction don't bother shipping sewing machines until you're ready to colonise Manola. In the Arctic you can buy most of your regional needs from the Inuit camp. Old Nate gives you enough gas to construct two airships - do it and ignore the rest of the quest until you've used them to claim all the gas plateaux. The AI characters will have airships by other means but only you will be able to power cities without oil. Isobel sells aluminium - enough for all your postal needs. Set up a New World hacienda farm solely to produce fertiliser to ship across the globe (put in a sell order at the harbour to get rid of the alpaca wool).

Anno 2070, to me, is the best of the series. I guess I have a lot of nostalgia for the game because it got me through a tough break up over 10 years ago. I still remember playing coop with 2 other friends and building the end-game monument. It was able to calm and de-stress me. I also completed Anno 1800 several times coop with a friend. I’ll always be a fan of this series.

For the next Anno I would like something like Ancient Rome/Greek or back to roots Portugal exploration era. Building an Portugal empire with Anno 1800 settings would be so good.
You start with Portugal map building your main town/capitol, you start to explore new maps in atlantic ocean, coast of Africa, South America(Brazil), India, China, Japan. And every new map bring new resources and expantion od production line. And then you move all the diferent products and resorces from all over the world back to your main city.

I started this series on 2070 after having never heard of Anno before. Guess it is still kinda niche. I went in expecting some kind of strategy/management but was blown away immediately by the piano music and the opening screen. It felt like the beginning of a children's storybook and as the game continued to be developed I loved taking part in the real time events. No other game quite captivated me in the same way.
I guess there's a certain 'intensity' to Anno games based further forwards in time. Anno has definitely been a weird mix of constantly working to improve or reach a goal whilst also finding time to catch glimpses of your creation and really coming to appreciate what went into making it. I liked 2070 for seeing residences grow taller and taller whilst seeing the landscape transform based on my decisions and 1800 was an incredible and exciting journey of industrialisation. Steam engines will always make my heart race.
I guess at the end of the day, as much as I would love to see another sci-fi or even post apocalyptic Anno, we are in agreement: Anno is great because it's not following the trend of many other games. It's cozy and yet complex, filled with unforgettable characters whilst you manage potentially millions and through it all it's just content to keep doing things it's own thing in it's own way.

  • @vodkavecz

Yeah, the futuristic setting doesn't really work for the Anno series. With the DLCs 1800 already reached the 1940s era too. Going back, I don't think any other middle age era would be that much different from Anno 1404.
What I'd like if the next Anno game would go way back to the roots of civilization. The first foragers settling down at a suitable location, discovering new technologies like domesticating animals and growing crops. And then each tier would push them forward in time, up to classical ancient era.
What I'd do away with in a sense is boats tho. Replace the flagship with scouts, and trade ships with caravans. And the sea with untamed wilds. Where islands are habitable areas. Of course the sea can be a part of the game too, but later, when the people can build boats big enough to cross it.
The neat thing they could do is the area you build at could determine what kind of architecture and needs your people need. They could advance in the analogue of hellenistic, egyptian, mesopotamian, far eastern, etc styles. Kinda like how 1404 had the occident and the orient on the same worldmap.

I would love to see an Anno 9 split between ancient rome (main) and ancient greece + ancient egypt honestly, I think there is so much to do and unpack production wise and architectural wise and the traveling through archipelagos would seem so natural being set in a "mediterranean sea", and I think it would really fit well with the high contrast kind of cartoonish style (something akin to caesar 3), I guess we'll see if the future brings it to us 😀

    @RC15O5 10 місяців тому +1

1404 is the only game of this series that I have played so far. The entries set in the future have potential, but this trend towards "dystopia is inevitable" with the bleak gray brutalist buildings and monocolors everywhere, is not really inevitable. People are craving a return to artistic architecture, many are beginning to return to God and religion. An integration of old values enriched by growing technology could be a great Anno-style games set in the future. It would be cool to see something incorporate a new renaissance, and you dismantle gray husks and replace them with architecture including neo-art deco, neo-gothic, and neo-byzantine, and other revitalizations; or just build stuff anew like previous games within this third millennium renaissance. Look to Russia's latest war cathedral, and Parisian suburb Le Plessis-Robinson. The future doesn't need to be bleak, and the human spirit demands a pleasing-to-look-at home.

2070 was my favorite before 1800 released, imo it is an upgrade of 1404 with different factions which i absolutely love, it still has my favorite OST, when playing Anno i love playing with Hard AI and get punished for playing too slow since to this day Anno 2070 has the most aggresive AI in the series til this day, even in Anno 1800 i have combat overhaul mod to make the AI very aggresive, i guess i'm the exact opposite of you yet we love the same series for opposite reason, i love this series so much!
My hope for next Anno is called "Anno '45" set in 1945s (because it still 9 when you add the number, 4+5=9 silly i know).

I started out with Anno 1602 after Anno 1503 had been out for a year I think. My mom let me pick one of the cheaper ( a bit older) games at the local games store one day and I chose Anno 1602 as I was already a fan of RTS games and enjoyed Age of Empires 1 & 2 immensly. I though I just picked another rts game which seemed interesting. But what I got was something completely different. And despite me being too young to be good at the game, skipping the tutorial text and playing it too much like I would a normal RTS so I never got far and my cities went bankrupt I still loved the game for its concept and atmosphere:P
I liked it so much that I saved up money to buy Anno 1503 a year later. And holy shit it still has some of the most beautiful isometric 2D art and graphics I've ever seen. It might look a little bit static by todays standard. But the colour and details is so great. And it still looks mostly full of life and movement everywhere. And the atmosphere and soundtrack was a step up from 1602 which was already great!
I like the newer Anno titles too. And Anno 1701 was kinda a remake/reboot of 1602 I felt. But Anno 1503 is still my favourite. Escpecially now that I'm old and mature enough to actually understand and play the game properly. And I think it deserves a remake as well.
And by remake I mean keep it mostly as it is despite visually improvements true to the original games tone and atmosphere. But there is room for a lot of quality of life improvements to the rescource, trade and micro management. And also the military part. I feel like a game like Anno 1503 doesen't benefit from individual soliders. But rather platoons or companies like in Anno 1701 or Age of Empires 3. As the warfare conceptually was great but tedious in practise.
To me Anno 1503 had the most classic RTS influence, but is/was also the most free form city builder where the relaxing mentality of "lets see what happens" truly shines.
