Hi Jay,I just wanted to add a note of thanks for this video. I have no real woodworking experience, but did have a broken drawer in my kitchen. It is made of pressboard with a solid wood front, similar to your example. I tried to repair it by re-gluing, and adding some screws to hold it all together, but it just fell apart again after a short while. So after watching several of yours and Steve Ramsey's videos I figured "I got this; these guys make this look easy". I went out and bought me a portable Dewalt table saw (because I literally have no room for a shop), pocket hole jig and the appropriate wood and successfully made myself a solid drawer, just like yours. This was the first time I used a table saw for anything, and I still have all my fingers. Thanks to your easy to follow instructions I am now a woodworker. Thank you for taking the time to do what you do, it has a made a positive impact in my life!

Jay when I was a kid the last thing I wanted to do was to spend time with my dad in his work shop. He's gone now I'm 58, I made my first drawer thanks to you. I just wish I had the time with him now. I have just gotten back into woodworking your videos are great. Thanks again.

I've watched several day's worth of videos on how to do woodwork and electrical for the exact same reason. My dad really was a master at both and I didn't take the opportunity like I should have to learn it from him.

Don't knock it. I once built a full size, fully functioning, 100% accurate copy of a Tiger tank from pieces of scrap metal I had lying around in my bedroom cupboard. I tested it against 6 original real Sherman tanks with the 88mm gun I had constructed of old drainage pipe and knocked all of them out. So there!

Let tell you WHY I like your videos. You speak clearly and don't mumble. You explain things very well and are easily understood. Your close up pictures are good because you don't hold the camera in your hand like so many other do. You do not have annoying music blaring. You do NOT attempt at lame humor like so many others.
Thank you for making your videos. I have been working with wood and designing various tools for over 40 years but can always learn new things.

Even people that are not in our trade can teach us something. Cheers my fellow woodworkers !

I built some cabinets earlier this year for a rental. I borrowed a friend's brand new K-5 which came with instructions on building a 15" cabinet. I changed the dims for a 24" cab but I used this design for the drawers. Since then I bought my own K-5 but no instructions for the same cabinet were included. :( I had originally made copies of the parts cut list (for various size cabinets) and using your helpful sketch up videos to learn that program I was able to recreate the cabinet in sketch up. I came back to this video to refresh my memory on how to make the drawers. I like this design a lot. Thanks Jay for your no-nonsense teaching style. - Wayne P.S. I guess it's not totally no-nonsense... I did enjoy the clone Jay swatting the fly :D

I have a one man cabinet shop. I learned years ago that dado's for bottoms are pain in the a**. I swapped to 1/2" inset bottoms with pocket hole screws. easy, fast and strong as heck. I just built and installed 10 pre-finished, Birch ply ,undermount drawers in 3 hours. Hard to beat 18 mins per drawer and they look great! I do love dovetailed solid Maple drawers but the with the volume I do I buy them from a drawer box builder. Nice work jay, I enjoy your videos. Cheers!

I've adopted this method of drawer building except for my very large bottom drawers in my shop that hold circ, recip, and jig saws, 4.5" grinder, 1 3/4hp router, heat gun. I went with glued & screwed tongue & groove for added strength for my heaviest load carrying drawer as I felt more comfortable with the front locked in place.

Thanks Jay! I made 13 dovetail drawers for my kitchen and they turned out awesome (with a handful of mistakes and a lot of time).
I used this method for drawers in my shop. Solid, and I made 5 in the time it takes me to dovetail. Awesome!

  • @SJChip

This has been an inspiration. While video from others have left me unsatisfied, this has hit all the points.
I esp appreciate your recognition that dovetails are unnecessary. I have used locking rabbet joints, which I consider equivalent to a dovetail, but it's 3 cuts and having to break out the dado set and then testing. So I end up avoiding such projects. Your "hidden" treatment of the pocket holes is OUTSTANDING and more than strong enough for the job. (4 screws each side? That ain't going anywhere!)
Yet another use for the Kreg jig I bought!

Thanks Jay for the vid. I have been making a work bench, and I made your draws with 19mm x 140mm dressed pine and 7mm ply base ( I also used Weldbond Glue on the pine and clamped while I screwed). They were so easy and they are so solid and square. I put them on 25mm angle iron for the runners. It has made my life easy. I can't thank you enough or sing your praises ;) You are brilliant mate, you even help people in North Queensland.

      Great Job Jay!
I realy like your idea of an easily replaceable bottom. Depending on the design and use, that could be a very useful feature. Also your comments about MDF and hardboard for drawers is a very good point. Wish more modern manufacturers would be honest about that.
It was nice to hear you speak on dovetails. It is very true that there are many types of joinery that will work for drawers. The choice should be made based upon the specific job (time, materials, & tools availabe, skill of the worker, intention of final piece, etc.). Dovetails are excellent jonits for drawers, especially the face. Howerver, butt, rabit, daedo, and even box joints can all be used with equal success or failure. Each has definite pros and cons that should be considered before use. For myself, I lean towards rabits and daedos mainly because of my tools and skill level.

Thanks for sharing Jay. Kitchen drawers are hardly bespoke furniture and I agree with KISS. I've been in very expensive homes that have particle board cabinets with nice facade fronts. Maybe it isn't the way we'd build them from scratch, but they look nice and are less expensive. Let the snobs spend 10x the time cutting their dovetails.

Good job with the video. I'm fairly new to woodworking, and I like learning new things. At a recent woodworker show I spoke with a Kreg rep and he recommended using the Kreg micro drill guide with SPS-F075 (3/4 inch) screws, both of which are made for use with 1/2 inch material. I made 8 drawers for my wife's sewing cabinet and they turned out great. Very, very, strong. I did take things one step further, however. I used Russian birch 1/2 inch plywood, and went so far as to use it for the bottoms also. The bottoms were attached using pocket holes as well, giving me a perfectly flush bottom. Since the pocket holes are all on the bottom, no one will normally see them. I've had more experienced woodworkers tell me that expansion will be a problem, but I wanted to see for myself. I'm thinking the birch plywood, 7 ply plus the two veneers, will be stable enough. I shall see.

Thanks for the video, I studied furniture making in Amsterdam and they only taught us fine woodworking like dovetails and stuff like that. Now I’m building wooden camper vans and need to deal a lot with lightweight options and things like cabinets that can survive different temperatures and moist levels. Need to work a lot with plywood now. So thank you. Btw, the original reason why drawer bottoms are fitted loose within the construction is because of wood movement, especially when using solid wood.

You're right. I've been through two days of checking how to build a dresser drawer, but my main concern was the drawers. Your method was very easy to follow and the explanation of all materials especially the old drawer (why it failed) was extremely helpful to point out. This will also help later on when I check other furniture(s) if I should happen to buy any.
    Good job!

Great job. Thanks for the video. I already have a pocket hole jig and will try your method instead of "trying" to use dovetails which I have never done before... cleanly. I have a kitchen drawer that fell apart just like the one you showed.

Okay, that was just great, it really was. I need to make a bunch of drawers and I want to make them from 1/2 inch plywood with false fronts. So I googled just that and your video came up. Your use of pocket screws completely solved my design issues - hadn’t thought of that! (Bonehead, I know) Thank you!!

Hi Jay, i recently used this method of draw construction, so easily achieved for my first attempt, turned out great and they look solid, i used 15mm ply for all parts of the construction, large format draws 800mm x 600mm.

Eric Kok what pocket hole jig did you use? My trend states a minimum material thickness of 16mm, I would like to use 12mm but worried it won’t work or fail

I read Claybear000's post and I agree with the assessment. You have stated in the past that professional cabinet makers may do the work differently from you but that does not matter much to me. I am so happy with learning from you and the fact that you sometimes use fast motion to keep things interesting is a plus. In the near future I will be purchasing some of your plans. My workspace does not exist yet so first things first.
Pocket hole plans was what brought me to your doorsteps (site).

Great video as always, Jay. I whole heartedly agree, dovetails are not the be-all, end all. You only see them when the drawer is opened, anyway. I think they're more of a status symbol. I inherited my Dad's workbench, many years ago. He was a master carpenter. I figure, the bench is about 90 years old. the drawers are built similar to your's, except he used common nails and they still funtion, flawlessly and I use the bench constantly.

About fifty years ago a friend and I worked our way through college building cabinets. He has continued in the business to this day. We/he built hundreds, maybe thousands of drawers similar to yours, but without pocket holes, just 1/4" crown staples driven in from the sides. I recently checked with him and he has never had a call back. The pocket holes would be stronger. Your drawer will last forever. Glue the plywood bottom in and it last even longer.

Great way of doing drawer. I'm normally using a dado & rabbet joint, but it's a lot of work. I will use your technique for my next set of drawers. That should speed up the work. Thank you again

That's a lot of screws! I think you can easly go with 4 instead of 8 in the front and the back, but i agree. Screws are just as good as traditional joinery, less work and less clamps aswell.

This looks great. Since I only have a hand saw I'll just screw the bottom on instead of making a groove, but I wasn'nt sure how to attach the sides to the front and back to make the strongest connection.

Wow, this is really good and not really that difficult. I just bought a Kreg jig a few months ago and I can't believe how strong those pocket holes joints are.
I have to replace two old kitchen cabinet drawers and I'm thinking of building something like this and just attaching the front piece.

    hi Jay.
i am recently using dovetiled 5/8 ts but if i do drawers myself we actually do 1/2 plywood drawers just nailed with 21ga. senco from side, those are super fast and super good also and i never had a come back for 5 maybe 6 years already, before we were doing 3/4 drawers same as you just did but trust me 2 screws would be all u need on each corner,
    great job man!!

The stresses on a drawer are the bottom pressing into the grooves on the front, and sides all the time and then cantilever forces on the sides when the drawer is opened. Unless you start pushing sideways on the drawer front when the drawers is open there is very little stress ever placed on the side to front joint. I don't really like the pocket hole approach myself but it certainly will do the job. That is 20 screws to hole the drawer box together. A lot of metal.
