To think that he wanted to be a teacher, and Yu Yu Hakusho centered around the overall growth of a teenage delinquent! In the manga, we even see Yusuke make a living for himself by setting up a ramen stand. It certainly sounds like he had the right attitude to be a teacher.

If there is one word to describe the diehard Hunter X Hunter community, it's patience. We are used to waiting, and we all just hope Togashi does whatever he can to make sure his health stays as good as he needs to be. Even its most selfish form of wanting more content from him, he has a lot of well wishers for his health.

@@legrang.archives I understand what you mean but I would like to make a slight correction.
You are absolutely correct that most SHONEN manga readers are younger/ stuck in those years, but seinen manga is for adults and tend to have more grown up stories. So my only correction is to say that it’s most Shonen readers, not most manga readers.
However you can still have great Shonen work that doesn’t take place in school (one piece, Dragon Ball, Jojo’s, Spy x Family, etc) and I feel those creator tended to have more life experience and more creativity to be able to tell a good story that kids can relate to without making it all about high school/middle school stupidity.
Which is why my theory is that many mangaka’s just finished high school, did nothing, and just created stuff based on what they knew… which is school.

A long time ago a artist friend of mine was telling me that this time period had a name and meaning. I can't remember but he broke down the reason why so many stories took place during this time. It's a time in life where you're establishing new connections and developing character. It's like once you hit the 30s most people met all the people they're going to meet. Lifestyle is already been established. You already know who you are and really don't challenge yourself anymore. So writing on characters in that phase of their life will be kind of boring.

Nen is limited by its complex structure. When random shit happens like Gon becoming an adult it feels like an ass pull. Nen is literally the same power system as Haki with the difference being Haki is left with a broad horizon because of it’s explanation that leave possibilities open.
HxH has the most overrated power system I’ve ever seen simply because people think more words means better.
When they were explaining observation Haki was broad and simple but we got the point….”sense enemies presence” because if it’s explanation it made sense that guys could develop future sight.
In HxH they took almost an entire chapter to explain quite literally THE EXACT SAME THING!
Power system is the most overrated thing I’ve ever seen because they take so much to explain it but when you put them side by side Haki and DF is nearly the exact same thing except it isn’t limited by the boundaries of the explanation.

I feel for Togashi... when you're trying to compete/compare your manga art to Toriyama and Inoue you're bound to break your back... His story, character and world was definitely up to the challenge but art-wise, trying to compare to the two manga goats (not even counting his own wife another legend on her own) is just ridiculous pressure I can't even imagine. Thank goodness we all still got these amazing series in YYH and HxH....

Was he though? I'm thinking artists like to do their own thing, I get that there are bound to be competitive blood if you're in the highest level like the three yu mentioned. But judging by their art and story telling? They are so different, that I think if there was any, it was miniscule they never bothered to listen to it.
Each of these mangakas are very talented with their art, although if objectively judged, the best looking one is Inoue's, but creative wise, I'd give it to Togashi. And again, these three's art style is so unique that comparing art style feels dumb.

Gon is basically the result of Togashi being fascinated with child psychology and responding to the criticism that he’s characters from YYH looked and acted like they were in their mid 20s instead of children. Gon is the result of asking yourself “what would happen if you actually gave a 12 year old boy super powers at that stage of mental development?” And the story is a tragedy instead of a hero’s journey. In the story, Jiraiya & Tsunade are the last infant survivors of 2 clans that have been massacred by Orochimaru who is possessed by a giant snake spirit. They are trained and raised by a hermit Senso Dojin to avenge their clans and restore their honour. There's even a coup involved. Sound familiar? The only real inspiration taken from Kurapika is the clan having red eyes, which I'm sure isn't the first iteration of it either. The elemental powers is something that Sasuke has in the 1979 anime Sarutobi Sasuke (the only version you can find is called Ninja the Wonder Boy). He even uses hand seals to use them. Pretty much everything in Naruto is inspired by Japanese folklore but Yoshihiro Togashi's influence is there.

    • @mytruepower2
      @mytruepower2 Рік тому +2

      @@tehemail.7062
Yes. There's a reason for that. HxH is a couple of different things, that make it difficult to criticize. For one thing, it's a shonen that has roughly the same pacing as a sports anime, and only slightly higher stakes; at least at the start. Even as far along as episode 75 of the 2011 anime, it mostly came across like a less-intense version of Yu-Gi-Oh. Now, not every HxH fan liked Greed Island, but the point is that this early section of HxH did exist, and went on for a long time, with relatively light stakes and slow pacing. Aside from Killua, and perhaps Kurapika, there's basically no element of the story that seems to be designed as a hook. If you're interested in the characters and their goals, you'll keep watching, and if you're not, you'll probably stop watching after just a few episodes.
Because of this, I think most people who just don't like HxH also haven't seen much of it, and therefore don't feel that they can comment on it credibly. Especially due to the second factor...
The anime critics all love it. HxH is a show that uniquely targets anime critics, for some of the same reasons that Konosuba and One Punch Man did. Namely, it's very different from other anime in its genre, taking a completely different approach to both shonen and storytelling in general. Because of this, it does things that few other shonen anime have ever done, but it also *avoids* doing things that other shonen anime have been doing successfully for decades.
Let me give an example. Gon is, from moment 1, a protagonist who's introduced and defined by his motivation, rather than his abilities. You do see him catch one large fish, but even that is mostly about fulfilling his goals to become a hunter, and it's not like what you'd get from a Dragon Ball, or a Naruto or a One Piece, where the character reveals their motives, but it's their special abilities that hook you in. Naruto, for example, makes the biggest impact in his first episode by beating up a higher-ranking ninja who'd gone evil. Goku chops wood with his bare hands, catches a giant fish, survives a gunshot with ease and picks up and throws a jeep. Luffy demonstrates his rubber man powers and uses them to defeat a group of evil pirates. Now, you also learn, in those episodes, that Goku wants to help Bulma find the dragon balls, Naruto wants to be the greatest Hokage, and Luffy wants to find the One Piece, but it's not what attracts you to the characters at first. They each have a hook, and it's front and center. Gon's isn't.
That said, generally, tropes are tropes for a reason, and your average anime-viewer may not be interested in watching a show that's trying to get them to focus on motivation rather than spectacle. However, for a critic, who's seen dozens of the former type of anime, and is tired of them, the very fact that HxH is a change of pace is more likely to be appealing to them than to a casual viewer. A person who doesn't care for HxH might watch a few episodes, see lots of running and exposition, check out some reviews online, (which rarely go into any specifics about what they liked or didn't like, instead name-dropping a bunch of arc names, any one of which would represent a time commitment of several hours to experience for themselves) shrug and go back to watching One Piece. They might leave a comment, saying that they suspect they're being trolled, or something else like it, but if so, it would be easily-ignored and probably wouldn't cause much of a stir.
Keep in mind, all of this applies to HxH before Chimera Ant, because at that point, the only people who've gotten that far are the fans or very, very diligent (and not very numerous) haters. In a very real way, it's the kind of story that sculpts its own viewer base, which keeps most contrary discussions from forming. Then it overturns the previous mood on a dime.
Now, I also said that the anime versions introduce their own problems, and I think they definitely do. The 1999 anime built dramatic tension like other Shonen do, but that was a divisive point between HxH fans, some of whom didn't care for it, while others were disappointed it didn't keep going. The 2011 version completely alters the viewer's understanding of Gon's motivation by not revealing that his father didn't abandon him, which is huge, because if you don't know that about Gon's father, the overall impression of Ging is a selfish jerk who only cares about himself, making Gon's motivation even more of a challenge to sympathize with. Both contained censorship of the scene where Hisoka slits a bunch of throats in the swamp, which makes it ambiguous whether he actually killed anyone or not at that point, thereby making it harder to feel nervous around him for the rest of the series.
If you need a TL:DR, it's this; it's different. Very different. Too much for some. That can and has caused arguments, though for many reasons, they're few and far between.

@@mytruepower2 Interesting interpretation. I always saw it differently though. I don't think he was just trying a new approach at shounen anime. Imo, as this video alludes to, I think he was merely losing interest after being overworked for so long. He seemed to constantly want to do other things both in manga and outside of it but was constrained to this project, either by the fear of letting down fans and/or by the publisher. So he compromised by forcing it all into the same production.
That said, I didn't really see that significant a negative reaction to it. HxH is still considered his magnum opus despite the flaws some have highlighted. I rarely see others that point to his other works as his best.

Just a quick note here: "shonen", "seinen", "shoujo", "josei", all those things, they're not genres, they're demographics. Both Lucky Star and Berserk are considered seinen, because the demographic they target are adult males, however their genres are completely different from one another. I know on the internet you often see people using those denominations as genres, and in a very high level they usually work like that, but it's important to distinguish genre from demographic, as it solves a lot of misunderstandings regarding a series' content. Calling a series "shonen" might give you an idea of what you'll find on it, but it doesn't define the contents like their genres do - Kochikame is a shonen, but it's a gag/comedy and slice of life series, while Naruto is also a shonen manga but it's an action and adventure series.

I understand Togashi-sensei a lot. One of the manga he made but sadly barely remembered was Flame of Recca. It was a really good story. But what I understand about him is that drawing and storytelling were more than just passion, it is euphoric to share the stories and ideas and characters running around in his head that it felt like he didn't have enough hands or time or even heads to put it all on papers. It was heaven to him...until the stress from the workload, the burning out of ideas, the wheel slowing down from the high of storytelling, the fear of being unable to meet the expectation from the grand opening, and finally his body breaking down because he physically could not keep up with his brain...I just get it. In the end, what failed him was his body. But I am still thankful that I get to read Yu Yu Hakusho and Flame of Recca.

Great Video. You did some extensive research and I learned a lot. The only thing that bothered me was how you kept reusing the same old videos of Togashi. This story really shows us why togashi now is one of the few manga artists of all time who could go on hiatus for YEARS, draw a chapter and get it released in the next magazine, since they basically ruined his life/health to the extent that he will probably die way before his time (as most manga-ka) and being under mostly constant pain for the majority of his life.
I mean can you imagine a company ruining you to that extent? no wonder he got special benefits. they owe him big time

zero exaggeration, HxH is the single greatest thing i have ever experienced in my entire life.
I would not even know how to handle experiencing anything greater. I learn new things about HxH all the time. I can not even comprehend the level of Genius Togashi is. I'm not educated enough to notice and understand all the things he has inserted into the story, and greatly appreciate how often i get my mind blown even more. MadHouse gets credit for it as well. Not sure if by his direction or they added it. for example we NEVER hear Killua's foot steps in the entire anime, UNTIL he goes to push Gon out of the way from Pitou.

I don't like Hunter Hunter for its story really. I think the characters have a nice playground to play in and seeing how the characters interact and develop is more of the draw.
I like Yu Yu Hakusho a lot more in the story aspect.
The talent Togashi has is undeniable though. I just wish he could have been more consistent. (It's not his fault mostly).

To me it is a weird mix i like some stuff and i hate other. Gon is hollow and he is basicaly there to show the world while some characters are interesting like Kilua the way arcs end seem underwhelming it is written in an enjoyable way but underwhelming and somewhat sudden all the same.
I do not think many if any at all can pull it off but the author does regardless.

    • @DarkflameEmperor
      @DarkflameEmperor Рік тому +4

@@Raximus3000 I like the construction style to HxH but it's a perfect representation of Togashi as an overall writer.
Directionless but brilliant. So you can get random side plots, arcs ending abruptyly, main characters forgotten / ignored, villains taking the main character role, etc.
So currently the last time Gon and Killua were in the manga was in 2014 I believe. It's an interesting style of writing, but more on the creative side. It only works because Togashi is talented enough to put straw together to make a house.
But it's barebones, beyond a couple things here and there. Short arcs are fantastic format for his style. The Chimera Ant arc is a miracle with this in mind. Though, to be fair, he did separate that storyline into nice segments.

Very true he can do amazing work in "short arcs" in that way he is a lot like Hirohiko Araki except one of them is not really a fan of world building.
Maybe if he did YYH in the same format as JOJO it might have had a better effect for his health i think HxH has reached the legendary status because of all the hiatuses. Fans tend to keep things alive especialy when waiting and the quality was there.

Naruto also takes a lot from Hakusho, some sharingan abilities are jigan abilities, most notable amatarasu being the dragon of dark flame but Orochimaru's unwillingness to accept his mortality making his dream of uncovering all knowledge is very much like Toguro's ambition of pursuing strength at any cost while lamenting mortality and how after you're over the mountain age will cause you to get weaker.
i totally agree with letting artists take their time, the medium doesn't matter, manga, TV shows, video games, etc. any art benefits from allowing the artist to work at a healthy pace so that quality doesn't get sacrificed on the alter of impatience, either from publishers or fans.
