    Are you telling me that a 13 year old child went too far when under insane pressure and rage and ended up saying hurtful things? How unrealistic. But seriously, I do love Gon's character. He is amazingly human and immature like a child would be. As he grows and he becomes more socialised many of these flaws will likely reduce, just like a real person.

    Why is no one doing a theory about gons fishing rod being his first use of nen? The fact that the line used is so flexible, and strong means it has to be something other then normal filliament. He has been using his talents his entire life, without knowing it.

      Of course he naturally enhanced his line, he's a naturally enhanced being. It's only through learning how to use nen through training that was he able to consciously alter it. He most likely would have learned this naturally, but he was gifted the opportunity to learn it sooner, so that he could exercise his true potential. He'll realize his potential once again, and become paramount in the story's conclusion, at least I hope he will, otherwise why use him in its birth. Regardless, HxH is one of my favorite stories, as much as Naruto, yet HxH proposes a system closer to our our realities potential. That's exactly why it's so popular.

    I already liked Gon as a character, but this perspective about him being a nature baby just blew my mind. That explains _so much_ of his mentality other than that he's a child.
    Also, to add onto his selfish nature - Honestly, even if what he did to Killua on the volleyball game was horrendous, just look at what he does to _himself._ He doesn't even put himself in such a higher pedestal of priority - He's _very_ ready to throw his own body away if he deemed it fit or suited to his emotions. And I also think this very much aligns with him being a nature baby. If there was one thing I've learnt from my Disaster Readiness course, is that nature is absolutely uncaring. It doesn't matter if it might effectively ruin its own biome by having volcanoes exist, this pain and loss is just a natural pace in life that must be dealt with.
    Crap, you could make a whole ass philosophy based on Gon's character.

      I mean Killua chose to do it for one, and two i don't think there was any other way to win. Gon was the only one with enough power to take out Razor with the ball, and Gon couldn't use his power on the ball without someone holding it. Killua chose to sacrifice his hands because he knew it was the only real chance of winning in that moment.

    I think gon is the literal interpretation of a child protagonist.
    Children irl don’t like it when things don’t go their way. (Like eating vegetables at dinner)
    Gon is honestly the most realistic childish protagonist I’ve ever seen, and honestly, I don’t mind it because I believe that’s the whole point.
    Gons “faults” are from 2 reasons.
    1: He’s just a child and has the faults of one
    2: Nearly everything that Gon does in the series is so he doesn’t disappoint Ging.
    Why did Gon risk so much on a dodgeball game? So he wouldn’t disappoint Ging.
    I think that Gon is the most simplistic, yet most complex character I’ve seen in anime

  • @FunkMaster_J
    @FunkMaster_J Рік тому +58

    Gon is my favorite character, second is Killua. They're best friends, and honestly a perfect match. I believe people of different criteria can and will help to further each other's own character and traits. That's why those who wish to conquer a diverse land want to divide those people. I believe it's when traits are mixed that we gain a greater affinity towards survival. Mix those traits and we gain the greatness of both, separate and we retain our weaknesses. It's through learning and combining our strengths that we overcome the weaknesses of both. It's purely evolution, built on cooperation.

  • @SpecialEdDHD
    @SpecialEdDHD 4 місяці тому +18

    Gon has adhd. I know because I have it. “I’m reaching my memory limit” he says, struggling to keep up as someone explains Rules to him. that’s adhd. He runs right into things without thinking them through. When he gets an idea in his head he doesn’t want to let it go ever. He doesn’t seem very smart compared to other characters but when it comes down to it he’s able to think up creative solutions for things. He does things on the fly. He has so much energy. The boy has adhd.

    • @Tyler-V3NA
      @Tyler-V3NA Місяць тому

      Thats definitely one way to interpret it, I don't have adhd so I don't have a say in what that's like, but I think that it could also be a result of the environment he grew up in. As a child, even in the town, people treat him with kindness and even some admiration for his talents, and in the wild, making extensive plans isn't really necessary, he's able to use raw strength and quick thinking to gain the advantage on most things he could face off against. Most "rules" in nature are very simplistic, and his straightforward and honest nature is definitely a result of that genuine nature of wildlife. He's a kid, having too much energy isn't too uncommon.
      What i'm trying to say is that maybe he does, maybe he doesn't. But if he doesn't, there's definitely a ton of other places you could easily draw conclusions to the roots of his behaviors.

    So many people want complex characters, yet when we get them, people label them as "unlikeable" or "hypocrites". Not liking a character doesn't make them badly written. Yet people can't separate these two ideas because we're conditioned to conflate the things we "personally like" with inherent "goodness". (Hence why we get people feel a need to defend villains they like, instead of just enjoying them without making excuses.)
    I don't want every protagonist to be like Gon, I just want to see more MCs make mistakes that don't feel sanitized, "safe", or consequence-free. Arcane is the last mainstream example I can think of where the main characters were allowed to royally screw up and face permanent repercussions.

  • @JaxonHaxon
    @JaxonHaxon Рік тому +37

    I think this is sort of indicative of a social shift into trying to make things into black and white on social issues, as opposed to the complex issue that it really is.
    Gon is a child, but when it comes to Yin and Yang, Gon is the White with a spot of Darkness. While Killua is Black with a spot of Light, but somehow we see Killua as achieving redemption from the smallest part, while Gon is decried for the smallest part.
    It's really sad that we can't see them as neither good nor bad, nothing is good or evil, like Gon perceives, its just nature, human nature.
    Compared to Yusuke Uremeshi who is a more balanced character internally, being divided into Gon and Killua, Togashi did a great job in creating THREE fantastic characters in his protagonists.

    Pretty hard agree with you're video. Something that always irked me is how many videos and posts I've seen just straight calling Gon a psychopath or sociopath, I pretty heavily disagree with that idea but it seems to be very widespread. A lot of the points you brought up are a lot of the reasons why I disagree with Gon being a psychopath, he's not this completely emotionless and manipulative character, as your title puts it, Gon is a complex character but a lot of people just seem to want to simplify him to what they first see on the surface.

      Yeah its become pretty normal to say Gon is a Sociopath and other similar terms. But i really don't agree. Gon is very caring and emotional and he doesn't go out of his way to hurt people and he's not indifferent to peoples emotions either. Like you said , I think just labeling him psychotic is a super over simplification. while also over blowing the negative things he does. But i guess at the end of the day every has their own opinions and interpretations, just like us.

    32:49 Ask for Tumblrian and you shall receive. Yeah, we do, but it's not as common as it was a few years ago. Nowadays more people use scrunkly and related spellings, poor/pathetic little meow meow, and general threats of violence (lots of perfectly good characters getting put in the blender these days. Sad!). Though I have some pals that still use the term, and a couple more pals who still use "cinnamon roll"'s predecessor, "woobie".
    Anyways,
    HEY I LOVE THIS VIDEO. AND GON. I LOVE BOTH OF THOSE THINGS A LOT. I especially appreciate you contextualizing Gon as a nature kid, because like, I'd thought about it before but I never realized just how deeply it influences the way he acts. I really love his weird morals and it makes so much sense that they would stem, in part, from him growing up around nature, which is inherently amoral. He is so deliciously true neutral, making him charming and terrifying and equal measure in a way that even our favorite 12 yo assassin can't always compete with. Killua's childishness and amorality are two different sides of himself, while Gon's childishness and amorality are inextricably linked. Like, Killua has to think that way in order to survive, but Gon is just... Like That. It's brilliant, that boy is up to absolutely no good and I want ten more of him.
    And like, okok I'm gonna say something probably controversial, but... as grotesque as him letting Killua hold the ball is (HIS HANDS indeed!)... I don't really think it's that bad in context of the show and like, shounen anime in general?? In fact, I actually think that in a weird way Gon is showing a level of maturity here that other shounen protags don't. From our real-world perspective, yeah, seeing what this does to Killua's hands is pretty horrifying, but in a world where these kids are nigh constantly putting themselves AND each other in mortal peril, I think it's pretty significant that instead of freaking out, Gon notices Killua's sacrifice and just... *accepts* it. It is usually SUCH a shounen trope for main characters to have a "it's only okay when I do it" mentality in regards to self-sacrifice, but this scene swiftly avoids making Killua out to be a martyr by turning it into a genuine display of trust and communication between the two.
    And honestly, while it's not quite an excuse, I really think that Killua needed to hear that Gon only trusted *him* to hold it, nobody else. It HAS to be Killua. If Gon had refused to continue, it would have eventually become a rift in their friendship because Killua is insecure and would have read into it as "Gon doesn't trust me to make my own choices and he doesn't trust in my strength". So like, yeah, it's still selfish and generally Not Good, but I don't find it quite as awful as others do.The fact that people feel so strongly about it just goes to show what a complex scene it is! (Though I still don't get why folks seem so afraid of a little spice in their favorite fictional relationships anyway, like, dude, fiction is literally the safest way to explore difficult topics like this. Let my boys be codependent 2k23.)
    Thanks for the added contextualization about the anime changes with the Kite storyline, that makes the way Gon reacted make a lot more sense. And that being his main motivation, instead of finding Ging, feels more true to his character.
    Sorry for the monstrous comment, but I wanted to put some effort into it since this video is so long and thoughtful. I really enjoy your style of humor. And THANK YOU SO MUCH for adding the little pings for on-screen text; I cross stitch while watching videos, so I would never have noticed them otherwise! I think we are going to have to fight to the death for the honorable title of World's No.1 Gon Dad though. Terribly sorry about that.

      LMAO "pathetic little meow meow" is crazy. I'm gonna have to use that one day.
      Yeah definitely, gon's nature due to nature(see what i did there) is a big part of him and influence a lot. Gon and killua are both in a position where they were raised in very unnatural ways and can kinda bond in that way. Especially because gon has alot of what killua was missing in his life and killua has alot of what gon was missing in his life. so they can fill each other's gaps in a way.
      yeah....the hands thing was not great lolol. but i think it's not an indication of gon being a terrible person. and like I and You said, there a bit more too it then him just blatantly disregarding killua. it was a show of trust and a the depth of there bond as little weirdo children.
      alot of us started with the 2011 anime so alot of that context for ging and kite is just lost on so many people. its pretty unfortunate. I didn't even know until like a year ago.
      Im glad you liked the video and i appreciate you monstrous comment lolol. You're not the only one I have to fight for the title. so many people coming out to claim Gon as their son lolol. We're gonna have to do this tournament style.

    This quote is literally Gon’s character arc for most of the series, heck, I’d argue it’s the whole point of him. Gon is built up as the least malicious character ever, only to be the most malicious when he is personally influenced.
    When you think about it, even his transformation is basically the poor man’s rose: giving him his full potential(rose) but rather than through work like a normal person, through giving his life.

    HunterXHunter is a great show due to its characters, no doubt, but...what always stood out to me was the idea taking a somewhat real-life version of the typical shounen-MC and putting it into a realistic, thus quite cruel world and Gons character arc/development/whatever shows exactly what happens in such a setting.
    No real child has such a strict morale that it would try and impose it on others (especially adults) like you can see in many other shows of the "same" genre and on a sidenote: A 12-year-old being selfish is nothing unusual. Their character, their priorities are just about to form themselves, there is a lot going on in their brains, so of course they'd be selfish in such a state.
    Killua is in that sense almost brainwashed by his family. His child-to-teen development has been deeply disturbed by his upbringing.
    I have the feeling that a lot of people pass over that fact (the age of the characters and thus their...mental development/maturity), when they're watching shows and criticizing them.

    it isn't so much that Gon is a complex character as that Gon is very much NOT a standard character archetype (let alone the one that people assume he is) so attempting to associate him with pretty much any form of literary analysis doesn't really work and just sorta turns into a neverending rabbit hole as you keep coming up with ideas to patch in.
    the best part of the series is that that is true for _most_ characters in the series! we learn more about how Uvogin interprets and processes the world around him in the course of watching him screw around for a week than we learn about Son Goku over the course of watching him grow from an infant to a great grandad because the series cheapens consequences to the point where *death* is an inconvenience at most. half the damned extras in HxH show more signs of having been thought through as actual people than any character in 99% of fictional works because over 99% of characters are, well, [characters]: they're _plot devices_ not _people_ and HunterxHunter didn't feel like letting itself be cheapened that way for the sake of ease of consumption...wellll, about 30% that with the other 70% being the guy making it just saying screw it and working things out from the character's perspective whenever he had writers block in regards to trying to work with the plot if Murata's self depreciating author-statements are to be believed.

    Regarding Gon,there could be some extra info and understanding of his actions that would look selfish.
    His chemistry with Kilua is based on respect and empathy. Suffering is good (depending on the level),it can help you grow or destroy you. In the case of Kilua,he has grown but in the case of Gon,who doesn't fully understand pain,has gone to the extreme and as a first experience of that level,it's an expected behaviour.
    Don't forget that Gon was raised without a father,when you start to learn psychology,you will understand how that influences you in the long run.

    Also, do many people say he is a generic Shonen Mc? Because once you pass the very first arc, it is clear Gon and other HxH characters are completely different from other Shonen characters. For one they're all farrier more amoral

    • @konaahostofthedream
      @konaahostofthedream  Рік тому +1

      Well that is true. pretty much every character is getting slandered somewhere on the internet lol. In general the internet skews perception of how many people do or don't feel a certain way. I tried not to blow out of proportion the negative opinions, by acknowledging that some stuff is probably a minority opinion, but that's my bad.
      as for people saying he's generic, in my experience, I have heard far more people call him generic then call him interesting or complex. Obviously those are just my experiences and the whole internet skewing perception thing. but i've heard quite abit of "Gon is pretty generic" like statements and those were just the ones i was around for. so from my experience even though it might be a minority opinion, i would say that there's a good amount of peeps that feel that way.

    I think Gon is a well-written and realistic character, but I don't really see him as a good person. I think an important thing to note is that it is possible to be nice and bad or even evil, and for that matter to be rude or unkind and still be good. This is because actions matter more than words.
    In Gon's case, he tends to display a very warped sense of morality, one that often places more value in how it affects him over something more general. For instance, he has no problem with Killua and his family killing for money. But he got angry that the Phantom Thieves "killed those that had nothing to do with them". Let that sink in. Gon just accepts that in their world, killing for money is a normal job. One kills for money and gets no judgment, the other...kills for money and does get judged.
    Is it that Gon sees assassination as morally superior to thievery? Or is it more likely that he has no reason to judge an assassin because he both believes he has no reason to fear being assassinated and his best friend happens to be an assassin, meanwhile he could very well be robbed and therefore is more likely to see a thief as somebody bad rather than somebody who kills for a living (and a luxurious one at that). One trains their kids to also be assassins by torturing and psychologically abusing them. The other hangs out and plays games together.
    Or how about a serial killer who eats their victims? All it took for Gon to forgive and redeem him was to train with him for a bit. All of the killing the guy did forgiven because he helped Gon and Killua get stronger. They just decide, "this guy who kills and eats innocent people should be let go because he helped us." And while the series says he was moved by their mercy and turned himself in, there's no way to know that he really would have done it or not.
    Then there is Genthru and his brothers. Genthru and his allies killed a lot of people they didn't have to kill. It seemed they largely killed for fun. Gon didn't exactly "forgive" them, he stated as much, however he excused most of Genthru's actions by stating the other players knew they were putting themselves in danger by entering the game. I can see why Gon thought this way, but Genthru still crossed the line with most of his actions and there is no mention of what happened after he was defeated. Whatever the case, if this is Gon's line of reasoning, then he should be held to it.
    In the Chimera Ant Arc, a lot of his supposed understanding seems to go out of the window. His first kill in the series happens when he crushes a Chimera Ant armadillo and justifies it as having no problem killing things that don't care about their friends. Kite monologues that he is more worried about the ones that do, foreshadowing what would happen later in the arc.
    When Kite gets his arm cut off, Gon flies into a rage. Here you can see his moral compass in action. He cared about Kite, and those that hurt those he care about are bad. But remember how he excused Genthru's kills as a risk that the other players took part in. Well logically you could say that death was a risk that Kite knew about and was prepared for. But of course, the heart doesn't really work that way. The reality is that just like everybody else, he has those he cares about and doesn't want to see them get hurt or killed. That Kite knew death was a possibility he was prepared for isn't enough to calm Gon down, or make him just accept it.
    And Gon knew little about the Chimera Ants, only that they could speak and some showed no care for their friends. But I think this was largely a coping mechanism. If he can find a reason for why the Ant should die, then there is no hit to one's moral character. Deep down, few people want to be a bad person, most prefer to see themselves as good. When Kite asks Gon if he is okay and Gon says he has no problem killing something that doesn't care about it's friend, Kite worries because what if Gon encountered one that did?
    Later on in the arc when he meets meleoron, for the most part he seems trusting, but there is a darkness hidden in him from him bottling his emotions. He asks Meleoron if he is lying and trusts him, but says that if Meleoron was lying, he would have no problem killing him. Due to how easily he says this implies he has already become desensitized to killing.
    Lastly, when he encounters Pitou. He clearly bottled his emotions because he was prepared for an all out brawl with Pitou, a fight to the death. But a fight was not what he got when he arrived. With no other way to vent, he has an emotional breakdown. How much of his threat toward Komugi is due to him being in a bad emotional state and how much is due to his compass is in question. I do believe it was at least a bit of both. There's no doubt though that in his mind, Komugi has nothing to do with him. She isn't helping him, so he doesn't really care about what happens to her. Pitou does, and he wants a fight now, and even though he should be focused on getting Kite healed, his lizard brain is demanding revenge. Then when Killua tries to bring back to his senses by mentioning Kite, Gon does calm down a bit but says something that really hurt Killua's feelings.
    Gon is an incredibly lucky person to have a friend like Killua, because Killua has done everything to help his friend out, and despite being told those hurtful things, he still cared about and tried to help his friend in any way he could. I also believe a part of why he cared so much about keeping Komugi safe because he didn't want her to die and be a weight on his conscience.
    Gon is not an irredeemable person, but I don't think he is necessarily good. His actions make sense when you consider that he has a very self-centered moral compass. Even though he has shown he is willing to put himself in danger and possibly die for those he cares about, he also tends to recklessly put those he cares about in danger for his own self-gain and of course there is a sort of grey area where caring for somebody other than yourself can be considered both selfless and selfish depending on who you ask. HxH shows how rare it is for things to be truly black and white. Most are some shade of grey and Gon is no exception. The series also makes it clear that everybody has the capacity for both good and evil. As Killua, and many of the Chimera Ants show,, it's possible to grow into more compassionate and empathetic people. And as Gon shows, it is possible to lose that empathy and compassion. As Gon's character arc has frequently been described as a negative one, it seems fitting to say that his transformation and beatdown of Pitou is the metaphorical death of his humanity, it also seems fitting that after being healed by Alluka/Nanika that he has in essence been reborn and given a second chance.

    I disagree you on whether gon and killuas relationship is good. While yes they are tyere for each other and to an extent are good friends it must be acknowledged to be toxic. Killua is only 'fine' with being used in gons selfish actions because up to this point he has had only toxic relationships except for alluka. And gon on the other hand as you noted is quite a selfish kid who has wrird morals. Or rather undeveloped ones. Hes still learning stuff about the wider world making it hard for him to make the good decisions all the time. His upbringing as you mentioned don't help. These two things mixed in a toxic cocktail that explains his actions in the later portion of the chimera ant arc.
    In all I'd say that as they're still kids they had a pretty toxic friendship. However in the future when they have better clarity over themselves and tye world in general i can see them being even better friends

      Gon's a flawed human, but def not a psychopath. (idk anything abt autism so i wont speak on that) Gon's problem was always when he cares too much to the point he doesn't know when to stop or when he doesn't know how to handle his emotions. Psychopaths don't have that. They're dishonest, unremorseful and have no empathy or trouble with caring too much. Its the literal opposite of Gon, who is often way too honest, shows remorse and cares wayyyy too much to the point that he gets reckless.
