      To me the Happytimes Murders was the worst movie in 2018. It was so boring and predictable. I literally figured out who the main bad guy was the minute she showed up, IT WAS SO FREAKING OBVIOUS! I mean come on! It's a movie where puppets are alive and living with humans, how could they fucked it up!

    It's kind of sad that "horror" is at this moment pretty much all about jump scares. And even worse, most often the same jump scare used again and again during a movie. What is described as horror at this time is something i'd just call: boring.
    Horror shouldn't be a matter of jump scares (or worse: disgust, as this is the other half of the "horror" movies, movies that are just disgusting for no other point than being disgusting). it should be a matter of story.
    The story, the lore of the movie should scare you, or should make otherwise completely normal scenes scary. But then again, this would need some serious writing work and inspiration. So I'll stick with action movies for the moment. At least they don't try to make themselves cleverer as they are... na, they do, too, but with them it gets funny.

    • @skyrasmus4760
      @skyrasmus4760 5 років тому +12

      Yesssssss! I'm so glad you said this. Horror has fallen so far. This is all exactly what made movies like The Shining, Halloween, The Fog, etc, so scary. It's all about setting up the environment to be scary and rich.

    • @joshhale9355
      @joshhale9355 5 років тому +16

      There are still plenty of wonderful horror movies out there, they just aren’t as highly marketed because general audiences seem to get confused when it isn’t all jumpscares and “here’s the ghost/monster/killer”. Hereditary was fucking phenomenal, critics loved it but it got a D+ from general audiences. Same thing happened to my favorite horror of the past several years, the Babadook, others include the VVitch and It Comes At Night. You risk becoming a commercial failure when you use older Hitchcock-esque styles of filmmaking today, where plot depth and atmosphere are more important than a jumpscare. The over-saturation of slashers in the 80’s and 90’s where you’re supposed to hate the main characters and not care when they get brutally murdered only for the “final girl” trope to show up is definitely one of the big problems, only movie to do it in a good way in my opinion (not counting Scream because that was a parody) was House of 1000 Corpses only because the entirety of the movie is absolutely bonkers everything and nothing makes sense simultaneously. Blair Witch indirectly lead to the Paranormal Activity franchise having like 7 movies when it should’ve ended at the 3rd which killed the found footage genre where so many great ideas could play out, all different from one another but under the same blanket, but now we just get the same repetitive schlock and the gems like Creep get buried under crap. Like I said, there are still great horror movies out there, even movies like Get Out and A Quiet Place becoming massive hits in reception and the box office (Get Out even won an Oscar which never happens to horror movies), you just kinda have to dig a little deeper than every other genre to find them, but they really are phenomenal when you do find them.

The majority of the "worst of" movies are so bad that you'd never even know they existed. Calling a movie "worst of" just means, that you only saw three other movies that year and it did not cater to your fancy. That does not make it "worst of". I can name 20 BollyWood movies that sucked so much that movies like these would be considered world changing.

    Two things you forgot to mention about Slenderman was that the final cut of the film left out 95% of the trailer footage that made moviegoers want to go see it in the first place. Not only was it a boring film with cheap scares and rip off moments taken from other horror films, but it was deceiving and not faithful at all to the source material. When the movie does a total 180 from what we're expecting from the trailer, it becomes THE worst film of 2018, in my opinion.

    @aLwE17 5 років тому +233

    I think what ruined The Happytime Murders was Melissa McCarthy, for almost a decade now, we've had a number of movies where Melissa McCarthy plays the same exact character. I won't even be surprised if all her movies were actually one big connected universe where Melissa McCarthy is actually the same person going on different adventures and her movie 'Identity Thief' being the glue that holds them all. Noone wanted to watch another movie where Melissa McCarthy makes it seem like we've seen the movie before.
    She kinda made herself into a stereotype kinda like The Rock playing a tough muscle-man action star funny guy, but unlike The Rock, people actually wants to see The Rock being The Rock. I think it's because Dwayne The Rock Johnson can actually become serious in a film when the role needs him to be serious especially the action parts, he can be relatable in his roles, he can also be emotional if he needs to, and be child-friendly when he wants to.
    Melissa McCarthy just plays herself in every movie, when there is an action scene, instead of switching to an action star, she just seem to be caught within the action scene while spouting out one liners. Even when there is an emotional scene, it's the same "I can't control who I am" thing.
    Melissa McCarthy should do some movie that would feature her other acting skills.

      I watched it while beeing completely stoned and was very disapointed because i thought it was kinda stoner Comedy like Pineapple Express... I mean... The complete cover is covered in weed leaves and as far as i remember they didnt even show weed or smoking of it... just that tiny black pill... they should have marketed it differently... it just isnt what it seems to be so many people disliked the watching experience... it is good for what it actually is but is a terrible movie if you expect a smoke along...

      @@marvin_der_marienkiffer I see your point, and totally agree, definitely not a film for stoners to laugh along with.
