  • This engine has been on the bench for far too long, let's address the compression issue by making a new piston and re-ringing it yet again. For some reason this engine has been a continuing challenge due to issues from the previous oversights and corner cutting that it has been through. I was happy to hear it finally run properly even though I will continue to tweak on it off camera and slow it down considerably, but I'm also happy to have the bench back so we can work on other projects. Thank you all for sticking around till the end of this project. We've got plenty other projects and videos coming up so if you're not subscribed, please consider it, and to all of you that are Thank you guy's again You Guys Are GREAT!

    26:17 don't know if it helps but sparks were flying everywhere, I know nothing about ic engines steam is my bag, but love watching you working on them. well done for getting it running. nice to see a bit of machine work as well!

      I'm glad that you enjoyed watching, and thank you for commenting. The sparks were from the breaker points (which were coated with oil). Honestly the shower of sparks were kind of helpful when it came to setting the ignition timing, it showed me when they made contact and when it broke contact. At that point, I was pretty much willing to let it catch fire and start over, thankfully It eventually cooperated. Thank you for watching and commenting 👍

    it's 0530 and the coffee is in hand along with a nice relaxing smoke. excellent start to the morning that will include installing a replacement bumper on my 1980 f150 that a local hooved nightmare of an animal decided it didn't like and committed suicide to get it's point across. i did the frame re-alignment yesterday. hooray for chains and 12 ton porta-powers. believe me when i say that i would rather be making that piston you needed rather than this chore. :-) thanks for the morning moment of zen my good man.

      Oh damn, that sounds like a great way to spend the day. Thankfully though you found a hooved critter that was 44 years old, the late model nightmares are obviously MUCH tougher because they have been know to cause microwave popcorn bags to pop out the steering wheel, and completely obliterate the front end of the high quality vehicles that are available now days. I guess there IS something to be said about evolution 😒..... I'm glad that you were able to relax and spend some time in the shop with me 👍

      I am not going to rush anything on this one, I will let it settle in and see how it behaves. If it seems to be content, I'll leave it be. If it will allow me to slow it down though I sure will

    Honestly, well done. I've been following this one. That's what persistence and determination rewards. Probably a very long time that engine has since run as well as you have managed to get it going.
    I need to get back to uploading videos myself. I have two chinese made webster horizontal engines from 7 years ago that I think need a little TLC one day, partly from inexperience as my first ever two models...
    Keep it up.

      Get back out in the shop buddy, if a man built it, a man can fix it. You can get them running again 👍. I honestly can't believe that this engine ever ran properly in the first place. The casting kit was great, but the build quality left a lot to be desired if you know what I mean. If you want any assistance when you work on your engines, don't hesitate to ask. We're all in this together 👍

      @@steam212 Many thanks, I'd love to find a workshop near me to give it a look! One is Air cooled, and the other has a water jacket. The latter never ran that right from out of the box with low compression, Had to use superglue to improvise. I think both need gaskets near the valve intake/outtake manifolds, and maybe a new piston for the air cooled one. I'll let you know when I do!
      Keep up the good work. Can't wait to see more.

    I think you were on-point about the ring groove depth! That would definitely be losing compression, considering the amount of side play the rings had in that original piston. Between the tighter ring fitment, and higher compression ratio, that thing ought to pull the house down (with enough gearing!).🤣 It sounds really good there at the end, with some extra timing, etc.😉 I wouldn't try to slow it down too much, considering how small of a bore you've got. You're probably dealing with a couple cubic inches, max?

    Oh!!! You poor boy! I know exactly what you’re going through. I did the same thing about a year ago. As long as you have blow by on the cylinder nothing will happen. I had to make 2 pistons again till I got it. Still!!! And still wouldn’t run until I monkeyed around and held the exhaust valve tight while starting then it took off! The final bug was the valve spring wasn’t stiff enough. Changed spring and ran with no problem. At one point I wanted to sell it for parts but just couldn’t stand to have it defeated me. Always remembered one person I knew always told me when I ran up against something like this is- well some damned fool built it we should be able to fix it!😂😂😂

    I think you over think things and expect too much too soon! THE RINGS NEED TO BREAK IN GOOD,, THEN A LITTLE FINE TUNING ONCE THEY ARE!!! IT WILL GET BETTER WITH TIME!!! Timing probably be best about.001" to .004" past TDC. I think it sounds great,, yes it might need slowing down a wee bit,, but sounds good,, I also think those other rings, would be just fine, keep them for spares,, especially at that price...... Sometimes over thinking things,, will make you spend more TIME ON A SIMPLE PROBLEM.

    • @steam212
      @steam212  5 місяців тому

      I ABSOLUTELY agree that the rings needed to run in, the issue was in the previous attempts it didn't have enough compression to allow that to happen.
