The third game in the Ikari Warriors franchise is a bit of an oddity, and a disappointing one at that.
Ikari III retains the top-down view, but eschews guns and grenades for fists and feet, resulting in a weird beat 'em up that looks and plays an awful lot like SNKs other brawler, P.O.W. In fact, many of the enemies are of an identical design, as are the punching and kicking animations, all redrawn for the three-quarters top-down view.
Unfortunately, this is where the similarities end. While P.O.W. was a decent enough brawler, Ikari III is anything but. The game uses some kind of damage lockout system that renders certain enemies immune to damage for several frames after being hit, and the fact you can only take a couple of hits before dying makes the game ludicrously difficult. The flying kick offers some measure of protection by rendering the player immune to damage whilst airborne, but having to spam this move all the time makes things very boring indeed.
In another nod to P.O.W. it's possible to pick up knives and an assault rifle (with limited ammo) from defeated enemies. You'll definitely want to hang on to these for as long as possible, especially during the final level, which features a very strict time limit.
In a nutshell, Ikari III is a top-down version of P.O.W. with fancier graphics, but awful gameplay. I was thoroughly disappointed with this, and find it difficult to recommend.

I still have the first IKARI WARRIORS on my
Amiga 500 - and it's brilliant 😺👍🕹️🕹️.
I had it on my Commodore 64 as a tape version, and it was cool, too 😺👍.
I also had its sequel, VICTORY ROAD on my
Amiga 500 - and to be honest,
it... was... bad 😿...
and frustrating 😾!
IKARI III: THE RESCUE on the Arcade looks awesome 😺👍.
And with two players at the same time...
More awesome gameplay 😺👍🕹️🕹️.
Also, that playable character looks like

At least they got a new lease on life in the Metal Slug series? Also did the intro say the kid that got snatched by terrorists belonged to a presidential candidate? Seems like they should have waited until after the election for the extortion to actually be worth something. "We've got your kid. Hand over all the gold in fort knox.....okay we'll wait until November and the results."

I was today years old when I found out that this game even existed. I thought that Ikari Warrior 3 was "Heavy Barrel." I had always believed that the franchise went as follows: Ikari Warrior / Victory Road / Heavy Barrel / Midnight Resistance. (btw, Victory Road is my personal favorite arcade game of all time. It was the first game that introduced a block function. One could actually deflect projectiles with the sword.) Did this game have the same round yellow rotary controllers as the other ones?

I wonder why Japanese game characters' names change so much when they are exported to other countries. So they are originally Ralf and Clark, right? I remember someone calling them Paul and Vince in the American version. It's laughable, even, in the original Double Dragon in the arcade the Lee brothers' names were Hammer and Spike, as shown on the arcade cabinet. But as we know, their names ever since the home console version were Billy and Jimmy Lee.
