Rygar (NES) Playthrough

- A playthrough of Tecmo's 1987 action-adventure game for the NES, Rygar.
Predating such classics as Metroid, Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest, and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, Rygar was among the first of its type to be released on North America, and it was a immediate hit when it dropped for the NES in the summer of 1987.
Though it shares its name with a Tecmo coin-op game released in 1986, Rygar bears little resemblance to its namesake. Instead of dumping a cutdown version of a simple left-to-right platformer on the NES, Tecmo went back to the drawing board and created a brand new action-adventure experience for the console audience.
The NES game's plot follows the same plot beats as its progenitor: Ligar's army has invaded the holy land of Argool, and as was foretold by a prophecy, the legendary hero Rygar has risen from his grave to once again take up arms against the forces of evil.
At the outset, Rygar can access most of Argool from the Garloz overworld, a hub area dotted with doors that lead to the action stages that form the meat of the game. Both Garloz and the action stages, however, feature large sections that'll remain inaccessible until Rygar has found the appropriate tool to overcome certain obstacles. The grappling hook will allow him to climb to high ledges, the pulley is used to cross ropes spanning rivers and gorges, and the crossbow creates rope bridges over chasms that are too wide to jump.
Rygar's abilities also improve as he fights and gains experience. As his "tone" increases, Rygar's weapon, the yoyo-like "disk armor," becomes stronger, and the more "last" he has, the longer his life gauge will grow. Finally, collecting "mind" will allow him to cast magic spells. “Power Up" makes the disk armor fly faster and farther, “Attack & Assail” hits every enemy on-screen ten times before it wears off, and “Recovery” completely refills Rygar’s life bar.
Rygar's gameplay is fluid and has a good sense of progression, the platforming controls are buttery smooth, and the goals are clearly signposted. It doesn’t leave you wandering for hours trying to figure out what to do next, and it doesn’t beat you down with an unreasonable level of difficulty. It's actually quite a forgiving game in that regard, especially compared to its contemporaries.
The graphics and sound also stand up extremely well for a game of its age. The locations are memorable (that blood red sky at sunset, wow!), there are a few cool instances of parallax background scrolling, and most of the tunes will have you humming along after a few minutes. Also, anyone who has played Jekyll and Hyde will immediately recognize the tune that plays as you're speaking to the Indora.
This early mix of action, adventure, and RPG elements come together to form an unexpectedly addictive experience. With Rygar, Tecmo set the standard for a budding genre, and history tells us that this would be far from the last time they pulled off such a feat.

NintendoComplete (www.nintendocom...) punches you in the face with in-depth reviews, screenshot archives, and music from classic 8-bit NES games!
Rygar is one of those games every kid who ever played it when jt was new loved despite never getting anywhere in it. It was a real treat to revisit later on in life to finally conquer. So many of these old NES games were like childhood white whales.
I must've been one of the few who beat this many times as a kid.
@grumby111 - you must be 😂😂... 7 year old me gave up on this game when I just couldn't figure out what to do after the first boss. I spent hours lost in this map. 😂
@@SamM-gl9zc 🤣 Technically, I remember watching my uncle play games. However, I didn't need any help getting through any of the games myself. Do you remember Metal Gear? I actually managed to beat that myself.
When I tried to play it again at an older age, I couldn't manage to get out of the jungle. 😆 Those stupid mazes where you can move in any direction, but the screen and details remain the same. Then again, I don't have the appetite to play these games like I used to. Nowadays, it's WoW or something modern.
This game, Blaster Master, and Deadly Towers were exactly that. Games I played where I never got anywhere in them.
I know what you mean. I used to play you when i was 6 but now im 30 whats up lol
Before Ninja Gaiden and Tecmo Bowl, there was Rygar. Tecmo really doesn't get enough credit for their contributions to the NES library!
This was Tecmo at its best, with notable titles such as Rygar, Ninja Gaiden, Tecmo Bowl, Tecmo Super Bowl, Solomon’s Key, Bomb Jack (when the company was known as Tehkan), Dead or Alive, and Monster Rancher (which introduced the lovable character Mocchi), before it merged with Koei (best known for the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, PTO: Pacific Theater of Operations and Dynasty Warriors franchises) to form Koei Tecmo Holdings!
Is there any reason you waited so long to play this because you’re responsible for promoting the worst games to our children
@TeddyBelcher4kultrawide Am I? Hmm...oops. I actually did do this game before, but the video was really old and the picture quality wasn't so hot.
Nintendo complete. Yes, I’ve always been suspicious of main stream video game lack of tecmo coverage. I’m Severely based, I believe attack on titan 2 on switch is the best reason to buy the platform. But Industry biased doesn’t like this video game company because they did not want to support the Sega Dreamcast and Dead or Alive was trash. Sony was never gonna support tecmo, they still don’t, and UA-camrs don’t. Because video game reviews is the original fake news
Would you play the Japanese version? It's called アルガス の 戦士, Translates to Warrior of Argus. The music is different in different areas. Basically the same game tho.
I’m 47, I wish I could turn back time to the days when my friends and I would just spend hours on end playing Rygar and other classics on NES.
52….same
@@350smb those were the days!
47 here also.
I just watch the gameplays for that nostalgic feeling.
Greatest time ever.
Be well my friend!
@@sebastiend.5335 Same with me! I haven't seen or thought about that game in decades! But searched for a play through, and that music
just brings it all back
@@350smb I just thought of the game but couldn't remember the title, so I asked my brother to find me the Gaylard's Quest game.
He didn't dissapoint, haha!
Seems like yesterday. I was 12 when this came out, now 48😧 can't believe how time is flying 😳
I hear you! I miss the old days as a kid, and time seems to go by faster the older we get. We’re still here though!
I'm 45 and I agree, seems like the 80s wasn't that long ago and it's weird when people say "The 80s are ancient times"
Yeah, bro
I remember buying this when it came out originally. I was 12 at the time and didn't really know where I was going but I beat this game. Very underrated NES game. Love the music.
Same here, had not idea where I was going but did beat it. Watching this makes me want to play it again.
Always got this confused w/ KARNOV
Some of the music is child's lullabies
My favorite nes soundtrack! I wasn't allowed to play. Had to watch my big brother! The game froze near the end. My brother threw a baseball into the television. Memories!
Justified under the circumstances.
I'm 47 too and it took a long time to beat this game and the music was just wow!!!😊😮
That's the risk of playing Nes, just never know if the game would freeze or not.
Rygar is one of my favourite NES games. Because it has no save battery I would play it and then leave the NES on all day on pause until I got home from school. The song at 16:50 is one of my favourite video game songs ever.
Me toooooo jajajjajajajaja
I'm in my late 40's and I remember I use to struggle playing this game as a kid lol. I onced used that flute sound 54:12 as a ringtone.
I still find myself humming this soundtrack since playing this game way back when.
I was going to post this lol, this and a few others
I'm watching this video SPECIFICALLY for the music! 😂😂
One of the rare instances, back in those days, when a home port was better than the arcade version. Fantastic chip tunes in this game.🤘🏻🤘🏻🔥🎮
I always thougth the same. The Arcades version of course, better graphics but that`s it.
Exquisite game. Played this in late 1987. I found it very addictive.
RYGAR is a great NES game! Loved it when I played it back then.
1 hour play through! You definitely beat my time. :)
This game was the first time I stayed up all night. Started playing Rygar at 8p and finished a little after 8a. It was an amazing experience I will never forget. Completely engrossed in the game and only realizing how much time had passed as the sun rose through the window behind the little tv at my Grandmother's house. Thankful for great games like Rygar. Thank you for bringing all that back.
This was also the first (and rare) time I stayed up overnight to beat it :) (48 now)
26:38
The four note music song is the best in the history of NES music. I could listen to this all day everyday non stop
Had so much fun playing this. The version we had sadly, had a bug in it where the final boss'HP was a staggering million..much more than the normal one. Could never end it. Something to do with the European shipping being different. But later did manage to complete it on a regular version.
Oh I remember that. Iirc it didn't let you level up past a certain point so you were stuck being really weak for the whole game.
Playing this as a 6 or 7 year old I could never get past the first 20 or 30 mins worth. Thanks for showing us (me) 30-40 years later how it all panned out lol
Rygar is real nostalgia trip!💪
This game came out a month before Legend of Zelda in the west, so technically it was the first game of its kind on the NES!
This game was so frigging difficult for me when I was a boy! Great to see this play through!
This soundtrack is amazing. It's definitely in the top five of all time in NES games imo...
Credit goes to Michiharu Hasuya.
Tecmo didn't miss. This game, "Tecmo Bowl," the "Ninja Gaiden" games, the "Samurai Pizza Cats" game for Famicom; they're all quality titles that had a lot of care put into them.
Hope the Mark III version gets translated.
My cousin Tony passed away last year, he was in his 20's when I was 9 years old. We started 5:00 PM when I got Rygar, and played until like 2 am and finally beat Ligar, the last boss.. He played while I recorded the Sagila's cavern song, 16:50 with my boombox to a cassette. Incredible game, but the sprite flicker was bad! Memories...RIP Tony.
Rest in peace, Tony.
I play this a few times a year. One of my all time favorite games.
Same along with Tysons Punch Out, Zelda, and Contra. It's literally therapy.
I was 9 when this game was released and I remember seeing it at Toys r Us when looking for another game and the game I wanted was sold out so I held off buying a game and asked my mom to take me to the video store and they happen to have this game for rent and I decided to get it. After two days of playing, it was my new favorite game that after I dropped off the game back at video store I went back to Toys r Us and bought it. I learned back then to rent games first before buying. There were tons of games that had cool box art that made the game seem cool but turned out to be crap and then get stuck with it. Rygar is still one of my favorite games.
I had this when I was a kid and and only got to around 15mins of this video's progress despite spending hours playing. We also called this game Tecmo cause that is the only english word on it and everything else is in Japanese.
Tecmo really knew how to give players control while jumping.
One of my best games ever. Hours of my childhood on this old one. in my opinion, this is better than Arcades version.
The soundtrack to this game is magnificent ❤
Last time I played this was when I was a kid. I remember the open world map (not unlike Zelda), with little suggestion or guidance as to which path to take. It was pretty easy to get lost. I also remember the life-meter power up with the more enemies you killed. Side note: I distinctly remember finding a screen with non-stop enemy generation and putting my controller on auto-fire for 10 - 15 minutes straight 😂😛😉
What I DO NOT remember is the power-up you are using to damage all enemies on the screen (using it on bosses). That is so OP. The bosses were always one of the hardest parts about this game, but you beat them pretty-much effortlessly. Wish I had known about that!
Miss this game. Fun times.
A classic NES game with really scary relentless monsters. Nice way to spend a Saturday morning.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but this game does not have a password nor does it have a sram feature.
How did TECMO expect us to be able to beat such a complicated and intricate game in a single walltrough?
Only the most hardcore gamers of that time could face such a challenge. My greatest respect and admiration for those who achieved it. Bravo 😯
Welcome to the NES.
This title along with Mega Man, Blaster Master, Ninja Gaiden and several others easily had >1 hour of game play (often way longer, especially if you struggled) with no password or save feature. I remember more than a few times pausing a game and leaving it on for hours, just so I wouldn't have to start all over.
16:12 Almost 40 years later, I was waiting for the lag.
It wouldn't be Rygar if it didn't slow to a crawl whenever the screen gets too busy 😂
This was one of the few games I could beat as a lad (I had to live with the playground shame of having never beat SMB 1). Actually found this vid because I'm pretty sure it's time to beat it again...
Beat this as a kid... And, until recently, had ZERO idea what anything on the sub-menu screen was about. LoL
Remind me of my childhood. Just like yesterday. And i didnt even play this game😂
I remember seeing this on ad in a superhero comic and always wanted to play it.
That beginning music has always sounded like a lullaby for babies with demented parents. To me anyhow yet I realize I never mentioned this or heard anyone else mention it. I'm sticking to my opinion either way.
Thanks. I had to get my friend to help me beat this game 36 years ago.
¡Excelent game! One of the NES Classics ever. Fabulous days, at the end of the school you back home and just play this to finish it.I play it again in the pandemia lockdown, and I do it to finish it with just one life. Yes I still have my NES and some cartidges, and work properly. Many fans of this game says than one of the geatest things is the music. Look for the music here in UA-cam, there is a video with the whole game tracks. 👍.
Feeling like a newborn reading those comments. Wow... I'm 20 but most of these old games have simple pixel arts that are just so pleasing to the eyes and sometimes also a great music to enhance even more the experience. I like some of those more than many 3D games released nowadays and of course many pixel art games made part of my childhood too, thus I actually love them no matter if I played or not, if they were part of my chilhood or not... It's wonderful to see people still making pixel art based games or perfecting old ones with remakes
Sweet jesus
This game haunts my nightmares
bizarre music, impossible gameplay ... who knew it could be cleared in an hour ...
This is one of my favorite games ever. There were several games that Nintendo released on the NES that blew theer arcade versions away, and this was definitely one of them.
Best soundtrack for an original NES game by far. I used to play this for hours on end as teenager...was 15 when it came out.
Journey to Silius might have the best soundtrack ever for NES, but this is a nostalgic one for sure.
I couldn't figure this game out to save my life
Hours of my childhood on this!
Replayed this all the way through about 10 years ago. Had a blast. Had more free time too or I'd replay it again.
Wasn't too familiar with this one but Rastan was my go to barbarian side scroller.
These games captured my imagination as a kid in the 80s. ❤
My childhood ❤ i play on famicom
this was one of my favorite games growing up i had no idea how wack it was
Great expanded Port of the arcade original
Vaguely remember this. I was very young when it came out. But the music sparks the best core memories.
This game initially got my attention with the parallax scrolling of that background sun, the gameplay and visiting those ancients for advice sold me to this mysterious adventure.
SUPREMELY UNDERRATED OST
As a kid. Rygar was my go to NES game. I liked the arcade but loves the rpg elements of the NES. Needing specific items to traverse the land. The music is great and overall game. This is one of my favorite ports from arcade to console ever made and rygar sits in my top 10 all time favorite games.
A classic game that never made a ton of sense, but many great games never did.
I always have thought the game over music sounds like someone having an aneurysm. Or the world just imploded. Either way, good going hero.
Wow lo avevo sull amiga che bei ricordi❤ lo stavo cercando ma non ricordavo il titolo del gioco
Awesome game play. Good times
There was a cheat you could do at really any time. I would do it at the beginning. like at 0:31 You hop over a gap and look to the left and put something on the controller button that uses attack and leave it for HOURS. when you returned, you had max power etc. Man I miss this game and the 8bit soundtrack
This soundtrack was full of energy still sounds great
One of my all time favorites!!
I'm 50 and about 12 beers deep. Thank you for posting this sh*t. I beat all these games when I was a kid. I still game but it's mostly Fallout 76 nowadays.
Cave of Segilla theme needs a remake.
no it doesnt... its one of the best songs from the NES its just fine as is
I used to rent this game back in the days. It plays out a bit like Russin Attack, but you gotta give it props for the music score, it's better than its contemporaries at the time. that sweet sweet synth! ohhh yeah!!
Here for the synth music😜
Im instantly 6yrs old in HOME VIDEO. Mom rented me Rygar, ohhh what a weekend!!!
37:30 has been stuck in mind for 35 years
I only now realized the music and sounds are very similar to Clash At Demonhead. Was surprised to see the two games don't appear to have the same developer or publisher.
After watching avgn video I knew somebody had a speed run and yours was 1st on search, now I know why why
It always slows down in the place your were around 0:32 doesn't it. 😄
The genies song or whatever those huge dudes were is the same as the title screen for jekyll and hyde on the nes.
Solid game. Not my favourite, but honestly, for the time it came out it's awesome. Many games would reuse those elements later in various configurations. Too bad we never got another Rygar in this vein, as far as I'm aware - unless there's some hidden sequel I don't know of!
Yeah, afaik the only follow-up it ever got was the PS2/Wii game that played a lot like God of War.
Music reminds me of Keith Courage in Alpha Zones for Turbo Grafx 16 for some reason
This is a top 10 nes game easily
日本版と音楽が違いますね。こっちも良い曲です。
Wow 😮 excelente gameplay 😊 maravilloso
Thanks! :)
The soundtrack was awesome.
gen X now we can watch it big and wide and with all the effects we want to add to the stereo mixer isn't that awesome then and now? love it here 49 still making art thank you!
I have always wonder what this game was. time to find out.
Does the old bearded dude just piss in empty Gatorade bottles?
I always did the Tower of Garba trick before Durango as a kid, there's a slug that keeps re-apprearing that will level you up to max in no time if you keep going back and forth. makes the game a bit easier
One of the few games I ever played to completion in my life. Zelda is another.
I had an NES and threw it out when I got the SNES , then threw that out when I got PSONE and so on and so on. Now i'm looking on ebay etc for NES again so I can play this game among all the other classics!
Can you imagine how awesome it could be if this was remade ala Bionic Commando Rearmed?
like this better than the arcade, one of my favorites to playthru.
What's up with all the turtle enemies on Nintendo? Turtles are the most gentle and peaceful creatures.
Kappa
I loved tecmo bowl.....JUST LISTEN TO THIS MUSIC!!!!
Please tell me you didnt cheese Ligar with Attack and Assail from the other side. I feel like I'm going to have to edit this comment in 1 hour.
Rygar n trojan . Both is amazing nes games.
The last stage can be broken so you can pass through walls. It's nintendo hard. You have to stand on the very last pixel of land on any screen that faces the outer edge where there is only sky and jump off. You must jump so far towards the edge of the screen that the game is forced to scroll to the next screen. If done corrextly you will double jump and wrap around to the opposite side of the castle. From there the game glitches up so there's no wall detection.
Wow that is pretty broken. I've never once triggered that.
Thank You
Never played this one. Reminds me of star tropics though, the way his weapons like a yoyo
You could also bounce on it's head to make it go to the right to the wall. Keep jumping on its head until it would get stuck.
Took me a week to figure it out after buying it used. 😂
"the goals are clearly signposted. It doesn’t leave you wandering for hours trying to figure out what to do next"
I'd actually COMPLETLY disagree with that based on personal experience.
I had this game when I was a really young kid and hated it because I had no idea what to do, where to go, what the game was even intending me to do. I just died several times, with a "Game Over" and assumed that's all it was after trying to play it for a few weeks, even coming back to it. The Legend Of Zelda, even, I could manage with, but this, I didn't care for. Eventually, I stopped playing it as a kid and regarded this as a "really bad game" for over 30 years. Then one day I saw a video online about it and that there was far more to the game than I ever knew. There was actual progression, a way to get stronger, and even overhead sections. Things I had NO idea were part of the game as a kid and never found even after coming back to it for weeks. Only as an adult was I ever able to come back to this game and appreciate it at all. So I'd say, from personal experience this was one of the most unclear and obtuse games since Milon's Secret Castle. I ended up having fun with it, but that was because it took me over 30 years to learn the game had more than I had any way to find out on my own.
Use to take me so long to beat this game
my favorite game before Ninja Gaiden and Kick Master!!
The music in this game is classic
In my series of books, "Diamond Dragons", the primary hero eventually creates his own weapon. It's extremely similar to the discus-type slasher which Rygar used. 💪😎✌️ This is, of course, by design; I intended it to be a subtle nod to the game(s), main character, feel, etc.
