John Deere 9660 STS Combine Fire, SK FARMS SOYBEAN HARVEST PART 2

- THIS FIRE WAS CAUSED BY A RUPTURED MAIN HYDRAULIC LINE! TWO FIRE EXTINGUISHERS WERE USED AND THE FIRE DID NOT GO OUT AND THEY HAD NO OTHER WAY TO PUT IT OUT. OWNER SAID BACK OFF TO PROTECT HIS WORKERS. THE HEAD COULD NOT BE SAVED BECAUSE THE HEAD WOULD NOT LOWER.
On 11-12-13 i videoed SK Farm's John Deere 9660 cutting beans. These beans are double crop beans planted after winter wheat back in July. This particular section of the field was planted no till with a drill as a test. The beans were short but were yielding pretty well. The beans planted in 36" rows were much taller and thicker. They were strip tilled behind the wheat. Due to timely rains some of their fields were yielding in the mid 60s. All told they had around 1,000 acres of beans this year. I have videos of the wheat harvest and the planting of these beans in my previous videos.
In this second part of the video I film just after the unit caught fire. I had just cut off my camera (low battery) and was talking to one of the farm workers when a large fireball came out the top of the combine engine compartment. I told the worker and he took off accross the field in his truck. I turned back on my camera and filmed for a couple minutes as they tried to put out the fire with extinguishers. I thought they has it under control so i packed up and drove to the other side of the field. As i pulled up I realized that it was still on fire and getting larger by the second. After talking with the combine operator it was determined that a hydraulic line ruptured in the engine compartment spraying hydraulic oil on the engine manifold. When the fuel tank finally melted she made one huge fireball.
I am sure they are in the process of getting another combine since they still have 400 acres of beans left to harvest.
A fire suppression system like they use in racecars would be a worthwhile investment.
As a firefighter I've fought several fires in combines. Most of the time it's started by a spark catching dust on fire. A lot of the time the following dust explosion will blow access panels several feet away. The dust will carry flames all over the inside. A small fire extinguisher is not going to slow it down at all.
Now the length of time the fire department got on scene will be dictated by several things.
1. Did the operator and person in the field with him called it in immediately, or when they knew they couldn't control the fire.
2. Was closest station out on a call somewhere else.
3. Was this field out along the edge of the station district area.
4. Traffic unusually heavy.
And so on but the most important thing is that the people at the scene were safe and uninjured. A piece of equipment can be replaced a life can't.
@@someguy920 I just lost so many brain cells trying to piece together your run on sentence. It's little keyboard warriors like you who stay out of school, smoke and drink and think you're one of the boys. You just the outcast though😩😂
You're Right an good option is Call the Fire Service as they can put it out.
I have a John Deere 965 from 1985, with almost no plastic parts, and I still have a fire extinguisher in the cab.
I was Combining, had my oils plug rupture and a small fire started but got it out. The 9600 had plenty of hours on it before, and I was borrowing it from a friend

South Georgia Farming you did the right thing in Calling the fire service as fire extinguishers won't work it's good that No-one though of it as it simply wont work it's that simple the easy solution is Call the Fire service as their Hose is Guaranteed to Work Amen some of It Works is also in the video.
Dang when this guy combines he is on fire 🔥
O prejuízo foi grande😢
We have had the same thing happen. Luckily we got it put out with a quick response from the local volunteer fire department. Ours started at the turbo. At any rate, we have 2 more fire extinguishers on the combine now than we had before :)
But fire extinguishers won't work on Big fires it won't work on huge fires it's designed to work on small fires not Big ones the Fire Brigade is needed for Big fires as they have a stronger fire hose unlike our normal fire hose the one the Fire service has is stronger therefore their hose will Work guaranteed.
You dont understand. We were fighting it with every fire extinguisher we could get our hands on. We used the ones in the trucks, combine etc trying to save the machine until the fire truck could get there. That 5 minutes or so with he fire extinguishers made a huge difference. Had we not used the ones from the trucks etc the fire department couldn't have saved the machine. The other thing we did religiously was use a leaf blower to clean the combine each evening to get the dust off of the machine and I am positive that helped as well by removing a lot of the fuel source that might have been on it.
Sorry for the loss glad no one got hurt

2.488 Million views wow! Put this on my top 10 reasons to keep a fire extinguisher on your farm equipment
You are correct. For combines you need a large one. They had a 10 pounder on the combine and used it but all it did was knock it down for a moment. Another five pounder was just pissing in the wind by the time they used it. You need at least a 20 pounder, minimum, and a water extinguisher as well. The hydraulic oil dripping on the exhaust manifold kept reigniting due to the heat. A water unit would have helped remove some of the heat, a dry chemical won't. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I agree with you
Few months ago,i had the same thing. luckely had two fire estinguishers. Turns out that guys from local dealership sevice team, did not preperly screw bolts on fuel pipe on one of fuel injectors. dust keep to accumulate on diesel wet pipe on one of fuel injectors ,very close to exhaust outlet (very hot),and started fire.
Oh, Deere.
Pun intended?

ESSAS MAQUINA TEM NOJO DE PEGA FOGO.
Very unfortunate, especially during a harvest when they could be in a need for another one...
I literally just watched a video of one of these same machines. There's a separator within the unit that rides on two bearings and the bearings went bad and caused a fire. However, the operator heard the noise and reacted quickly and saved the machine and the unit.
I think we watched the same video haha

I would hope there was a fire suppression system on it.
So what you're saying is you're a city person! No combine comes with a fire suppression system!
Even a small fire is very hard to put out, dust smolders away in places you can't get at, once your extinguisher is empty it will spread. I had a baler catch fire from a bearing giving out, because of the chain oiling system, all the dust was socked in oil and burnt very well. I used up the 1st extinguisher and almost had it out, and then it started spreading again. Then got a 2nd and had all the flames out, but the wind keeping the smoldering dust burning, and soon there were flames again....got it out finally with a water tanker I had.
Farming is lit this season
Has anyone ever thought of a built in fire extinguishing system for combines and balers?
They make them and some of the newer combines can be ordered with them.
With a fire that big it won’t work
@@brushycreekbunch2124 That's the point. With a built in extinguisher it reacts early and stops the fire getting hold.
Ronnie G but either way it would still melt everything. I mean it would help to a certain pojnt

Maybe if enough combines are lost to fire they'll start carrying water and fire extinguishers when they're harvesting. How about a dedicated fire truck for the farm. All it takes is a truck, a tank with a couple hundred gallons of water, a pump and a hose. Come on, get with the program.
Any recals on these machines? Bad maintenance?
Nice of the fire service to turn up when its far to late as normal
It was too late the moment it caught.
if i remember right the 9600s were known to catch fire. because of turbo and exhaust location, dust would collect on them and catch fire. it is recommended to blow them off every so often to reduce the chance of a fire. of course we make a good note to clean ours regularly at least the radiator and filter to help it breath and run cool.
All combines are high risk for fires just because of the environment they work in. Keeping them clean is the most improtant thing though. This combine did not stand a chance. The engine was hot and the main hydraulic line ruptured spraying the engine and exhaust manifold with hot hydraulic fluid. It made a huge fireball out of the engine compartment. All the plastic panels then started burning. Once the fuel tank, which is close to the engine, ruptured it was gone.
So basically our 9650 is gonna catch fire within 2 years correct
All I was stating was that if your main line raptures on a hot engine there is not much you can do. Not that all combines are going to go up in smoke.
So the s680 dont catch fire that often then the 9600s
I also know that you have to keep those Deere's blowed out they build up dust and debris around the motor

Hello . We have in some Arab countries, extinguishing can only come and the fire has eliminated those who burn it. As for you, it is very strange that the firefighters did not come until after the combine harvester
Just seen that on description now. Was it not checked regularly for weakness ?
It's not my equipment so I do not know. They maintain their equipment very well so I think it is just a failure.
Please tell me how you're going to check all the hydraulic lines on a combine for weaknesses!?!?
@@deannelson9565 Pre checks and regular maintenance should be carried out. We used to have to do Pre checks on the forklifts we used at my previous work and report any damage or repair needed if not all OK

You better not get too close to that combine because the tires are gonna heat up and expand, then eventually pop and it'll look like the combine blew up.
Edit: I know it's always a bad day when a farmer's equipment goes up in black, toxic smoke. But the fact that these 9660 STS combines cost at least $250,000 is even worse.
That combine there is only worth around $60,000.

Well, it looks like they saved 1 tire and rim tho
Yeah should have detached the header real quick on the ground to save it
I guess we'll never know for sure, but my experience in the field and with diesel turbo driven motors my guess is that the turbo went bad and the machine was still pumping all that fuel into itself hence the flames shooting out the exhaust it was all over after that.... But who knows. That's a shame.
Ive seen trains do exactly what you said
Did you literally not listen to anything in the video this is plain and simple a blown hydraulic line that undoubtedly sprayed onto a surface that should not be sprayed due to its Heat and the whole thing lit up!

atleast the front right tire was still in good shape!
Anybody watching during quarantine?
I would have at least tried to get that header off
How? You aren't going to lift it off by hand and their front end loaded would have taken 30 minutes to get their from their shop. The machine was engulfed in 10 minutes. The machine hydraulics were gone because the main hydraulic line ruptured. Nothing on the machine was working. The head was not worth the effort anyways.
Как жаль☹️
Always carry fire extinguishers ,,costs a few bucks but saves thousands 🤔
Good job on trying to help out
Good job on commenting on something you know nothing about. If you notice i did not film the whole incident. They had nothing but two extinguishers and that is it. You are about 200,000 short on your estimate.
@@kamuzu it's a quote from the movie "son in law" and that's what they cost back then.
My sharecropper burned his JD up Friday. Belts rarely burn, bearings most likely culprit and hydraulic lines next.
Hate to see any of them burn. This one was definitely a blown hydraulic hose. I seen it go and the operator heard it. He could also tell because all the hydraulic functions stopped working. Most fires on combines are caused by bearing failures though. Thanks for watching.
South Georgia Farming Live on a ranch in Texas and have done insurance for 15 years. Combines and bailers are notorious for burning up equipment. People don't realize these are actual cash value policies and most farmers run them for years and years. Insurance will not afford brand new equipment...even new ones that go up are subject to depreciation. Glad everyone was ok.
So bearings will go bad and start throwing sparks basically? That's a new one for me, but with all the moving parts on these things it makes total sense. And it's not like you have a warning gauge or can hear it go when your in the cab of these things.
how did it happen?
Yangının başladığı an yoldan geçenlerden yardım isteye bilirdin,ve ya itfaiyeyi arayabilirdiniz.utanmadan kamera ile çekenler varya, hainler,
See that is whh u have to check those things
I've seen several combine burn, why? Not cleaning out the engine compartment? Overheating?
A bit if both, yes. First I notice is the side panels seem very dusty. Probably hadn't been cleaned and dusted out in awhile
This combine has ben cleaned. The only reason it went up is the ruptured hydraulic line spraying oil on the engine that had been running hard for several hours. Too much heat and a plenty there to burn.
Most combine fires start from either bearings heating up, chaff and debris getting on the engine, or electrical issues. This one was a ruptured hydraulic line beside a hot engine. You can usually tell what caused them by where they start on the combine but not always. I've seen electrical fires go up even faster than this one went up.
Nothing burns like a Deere!
Why would you just stand there.
