  • Hello everybody!
    It is now day 50 of the eruption in Iceland on the Reykjanes peninsula from the Svartsengi system and it might be in its final stages as both tremors and visual activity have decreased a lot in the last 2 days.
    Uplift is, however, still on going with recent estimates on the volume of magma in the chamber under Svartsengi being on the high end of what has been needed to produce an intrusion or an eruption the last 3 times. So, we won't have to wait long for the next event.

    Just before looking at your video I saw that we have got some bigger earthquakes at Eldey. That is in my opinion the place where the source of the magma is. It is coming up there and follows the plate boundary. Hope, the little volcano starts again and release some pressure there. Otherwise we have again the situation that the Lave can erupt elsewhere and no one knows in which place that will be. Hope you all are fine and enjoy the sunlight after a long winter. Thanks again for the update!

    • @Hliarmenn
      @Hliarmenn  17 днів тому +1

      Yeah, it's actually interesting how earthquakes there seem to link towards eruptions in Svartsengi. So, this could be a sign the next intrusion occurs in just a few days.
      I also hope activity will increase in the crater.

    With this eruption roughly 60 million cubic meters of lava erupted with all four eruptions. The 3.5 cubic meter inflow seems low, but that's only half since the rest is going to the eruption. So the total volume coming up should be roughly 7 cubic meters.

    • @Hliarmenn
      @Hliarmenn  18 днів тому +2

      Crazy to think that's just over 1/3 of the total amount that erupted during the 2021 eruption in Geldingadalir.
      I agree with you, that the influx of magma into the chamber is around 7 m3/s. So now, if this path is closing, it should all accumulate in the chamber. Will be interesting to see if uplift data agrees

    • @sigisoltau6073
      @sigisoltau6073 18 днів тому

      @@HliarmennThat eruption was truly amazing and beautiful. You might know them, but if they were still alive, Maurice and Katia Krafft would have loved that and the following eruptions. I wonder if they would have traveled to Iceland with these shorter eruptions, or gone there just before they started.
      On the uplift, call me crazy, which I kinda am with my autism, but I would say yes. Depending on when this eruption ends, and the next one begins, we should see an increase if there's enough time between the two.

    Eldey and Elderjardrangular 45+ EQ Swarms just Now! 126 EQ and Tremors today. At least 70 EQ 1.0+ Today!

    • @Hliarmenn
      @Hliarmenn  17 днів тому

      Yeah, Eldey makes itself present every now and then with these rather powerful swarms. They never seem to be caused by magma intrusions, just plate activities. But, based on history, Eldey tends to erupt during volcanic periods on the peninsula.

  • @mikewright447
    @mikewright447 17 днів тому +1

    i wouldnt be too sure it may kick off again as there is now a "known" pathway and like water it will take the easiest route first and at the time of posting there is a minor swarm going off at eldey and these seem to migrate onshore and start more swarms as the pressure gets shifted about.
    im also wondering if this intrusion is a new volcano thats trying to erupt straight up but the magma keeps getting diverted away due to local geology and / or older intrusions blocking its way upwards.

    • @Hliarmenn
      @Hliarmenn  17 днів тому

      It might pick up again or that a completely new fissure opens. There is, however, something causing the current eruption to slow down which could be due to the fact the path, from the chamber to the surface, is closing.
      The Eldey earthquakes are most likely just regular pressure release quakes due to plate movements. Wether that'll have effects on the Svartsengi system is uncertain but we should pat close attention to it.

      @Hliarmenn  17 днів тому

      Ayyy that's so cool! He got me interested in this stuff an basically taught me everything 😁
      It's definitely possible that this dies down completely meaning this is the last eruption from the Svartsengi system during this run.
      This Svartsengi run will end sometime which could be now.

    Hmm I don't think it's near done because of the uplift

    • @Hliarmenn
      @Hliarmenn  17 днів тому

      Everything points towards that this eruption is ending in the next 1 or 2 days but, since there's uplift like you say, it could pick up again although I find it more likely that another fissure will open sometime soon. Maybe a combination of both will happen, a new fissure opens and activity in the crater picks up.
