I so appreciate the work you have put into the hours and hours of footage. Your coverage is the only one I listen to. Thank you my friend for letting the world see Iceland through the eyes of a person who so obviously loves her.
I look forward to your updates. I watch another which has a very academic approach whereas being an Icelander yourself, yours approach is more down to earth and you give a local perspective: problems with Government policies etc
Good to hear the seismic activity has improved. I cannot imagine living on a young active volcanic island, with so many unknowns. Iceland’s landscape is so dramatic and beautiful- a microcosm of geologic history and activity. No wonder Icelanders are such courageous amazing people. The footage and coverage you provide, Gylfi, is incredible.
Gylfi, as always, I love hearing your voice and your thoughts. Doesn't matter where you go with what you say or offer us, exactly. I just appreciate your presence and your time that you freely give. Our stories -- our personal stories -- are what motivate us and make life real and create what matters to each of us learning about each other. There's a book, "Cold Anger: A Story of Faith and Power Politics" which makes this point quite well. Our life stories are what connect us, inform us, motivate us. You tell a story. And in the process these stories brings us together -- as family. Best wishes, of course. And all my love, as well. I did finally look at your earlier videos (more than 4 yrs ago) and I believe you offered us your visage then. And I love the person I saw then and there, too, as well. I would give you a hug if I could.
Thanks Gylfi! I learn so much from your videos because they contain knowledge, heart and soul. Icelanders are a resilient people! Certainly through all this uncertainty residents in Grindavik and other locals on the peninsula have really shown their resilience. I hope the drama is slowing down and the SO2 levels decline. The magma people can live with. Those gases are so toxic. Glad you’re back after being sick. Was getting worried!👏👏👍
Interesting video again! When I was living in Iceland (2020-2021) I was already scared of what would happen to Grindavik. I'm also surprised Reykjavik keeps expanding around Vellir, closest to the volcano. There are literally old lava flows there. A bit further away, the IKEA is also situated on old lava fields. These should be big warning signs that it could happen again, but I feel like not much is being done to protect the city from possible eruptions. It's also ridicolous that there are still people who think a new airport at Hvassahraun would be a good idea.
WOW! Thanks so much for yet another thorough update! So hoping that the next eruption on the Krisavik System (when, not if, it comes) will be away from both Reykjavik AND Grindavik. Encouraged, but saddened, to catch the inevitable conclusions that I must draw (from the USA) by your expression of hope that unscrupulous POLITICIANS and DEVELOPERS would not be building new housing on sites potentially unsafe in the long term. We have problems with both in our country. The BEST human response to this ongoing creation of new Icelandic terrain is to try to build, as much as reasonably as possible, FAR AWAY from the known spreading center of the Reykjanes Ridge. Unfortunately Grindavik is a GREAT harbour, while sitting right in the "target line" for potential future eruptions. May it be spared! Much LOVE and best wishes to the people of Iceland, and to you especially, for your incredible toughness and resilience! Take care, stay safe, and may Surtr, Vulcan and Hephaestus be gracious unto you and ALL the people of Iceland!
An earthquake in New Jersey USA woke up my friend in the city of New York. I doubt we have any problems here but I do find the ever changing state of Iceland fascinating. Thank you Gylfi for your updates. ❤️🇨🇦❤️

It could be worse. See Naples. Where the city extends into the Campi Flegrei caldera. Which experienced an eruption just 500 years ago. And had rather frequent eruptions at Vesuvius until 1944.
Building a completely new city to replace Reykjavik sounds very expensive for a small country, but maybe it could be done gradually over some time. Thanks for an interesting discussion about the possibilities for the future.
I really enjoy the compilation of landscape shots and little stories like a pony munching hay 🐴 and someone getting bogged in a mud flat 😅 it creates a more wholistic picture of Iceland

Wow, the images of the volcano plume with the clouds and the atmosphere are breathtaking 🤩. It would be nice to have a tourist friendly eruption, but there's a lot of gas emission. Thank you for the update, will be continued no doubt.
Thank you so much it's so intresting to now all what you now about all this situation off your beautyful country Iceland. I really hope that mother earth will calm down ...and Thank you so much for sharing this whit us !
I love seeing footage of the Iceland horses and nature - prayers for everyone there and all of the animals and creatures of Iceland. 🇮🇸 I have to agree, Gylfi, nature isn’t so frightening - it just does what it does, but some of the politicians and people planning communities and infrastructure without wisdom or care can be a whole other story 😨
Why am I hearing Starships' "We built this city on rock and roll" echoing around my head just now? Relocating a country's main airport is no small matter, nor is moving the same country's capital city. For both you need a fairly large "flat" land area, that is geologically stable with a relatively benign climate. In the case of Iceland I can't see many areas that fulfil these needs, look further north and the climate gets colder, move to the centre of the country and there are mountains and glaciers to contend with, look to the south coast and there may be a few places that are just about big enough and flat enough, then look at the east coastal region and there may be one or two possible areas. Then there's two questions that run in parallel - Time? and Willingness? Time has two parts - how long have the existing airport and city got, and how long to develop the infrastructure? Civil engineers can give rough figures for both, but I'd guess at least ten years for cutting the first sod to being up and running. Willingness is harder to quantify as it depends on both internal and external influences.
Thank you for your updates, I was thinking too, how people can stay close to the volcano area after all of this. And before that how could build a city in the volcanic area , looks what happens in Pompeya, I’ll be afraid. It’s just a thought, greetings from Canada 🇨🇦
Your footage is stunning, as always, Gylfi. ❤Additionally I really appreciate your well thought out points of concern. Your local knowledge and wisdom is invaluable. I hope the people who make these decisions are listening. Have you considered another place that would be more suitable for the capital city?
Good evening Gylfi, Thanks for the update and beautiful drone footage. As long as people don’t get hurt or worse, volcanoes can be a great tourist attraction. But volcanoes do their own things and they don’t care about anything. We had 25°C today here in the southeast of the Netherlands;a new record because normal temperature is about 14°C. Coming days back to normal temperatures and rain showers. Greetings to you.
Thank you! Very interesting perspective about moving the city and industry to a safer spot. It may happen naturally as businesses find better locations. But who knows.
I can completely understand if Iceland decide to create a second basket to put the eggs. even a third one may help. Regarding the road to the airport, would it be interesting to create a ferry system from the capital city to the airport ? that would avoid any land issue. and you are a land of seamen at the origin. As a tourist, that would probably be a great view to the area as an introduction after landing in the country. I like how pragmatic you approach the things
Iceland is a beautiful country! However, I feel the BL is being extremely irresponsible and putting tourists, employees and safety response volunteers at risk. I will never revisit the BL for this reason. There are plenty of other natural beautiful places in Iceland to visit. Thank you for another informative video!
Svartsengi is now inflating. How strong this trend is, or even how certain we can be in it, is to be seen but we need to be aware that the situation might be changing.
What exactly is Þorvaldur Þorðarson's argument for saying that he expects the Svartsengi episode to come to en end when this eruption stops? On the one hand, the route for the magma seems to be open from great depth all the way up. So for sure, one scenario is that the current eruption ends because the inflow from below ceases, and in that case it would be likely that the episode ceases. On the other hand, if something else happens to impede the eruption, e.g. the magma route from Svartsengi to the surface becomes blocked for some reason (I don't know how likely that is), and the inflow from great depth remains intact, then the little shallow magma chamber under Svartsengi could just inflate again and build up pressure to free the route to the surface again. Or find another route nearby. So what makes Þorvaldur think this will stop? As far as I understand there are no clear indications that the magma inflow is stopping; in fact, the eruption is now going at a rate of 7-8m^3 lava per second, whereas before this and the last eruption the magma chamber filled at a rate of 8 million m^3 in 20 days, which means 4-5m^3/s. So unless part of the magma before the last eruption somehow went elsewhere (but wouldn't that have caused measurable inflation?), this seems to be an increase, rather than a decrease, in magma inflow. Which doesn't mean that it cannot stop in a few months, or weeks or maybe days, but I am not sure that there are actual indications for this.
No but I had to tease the guy with the drone, he sat there waiting for help but this kind of offloading is illegal.... and very expensive it the get caught...
@@JustIcelandic I can see why it’s illegal! Destructive and the rescue agency would have to spend time and money saving the dumb dumbs who went out there. I wonder if he noticed your drone 🤣🤗
I am not an expert and not an Icelander but I think that the best place for new international airport (or the capital city) would be in or close to the city Egilsstaðir.
But Gylfi, the tension around Grindavik is still slowly rising. I wonder if the dike is now feed directly by the plume? And all the other seismometers around are getting slowly more restless. In my opinion it’s not over…
I think it's just starting on the eastern part, by lake Kleifarvatn and all the way to Hengill, but to the west, it's all quite calm for the first time in long time, but might not last though as we know :) I hope that Prof. Þorvaldur got this one right, but we might both suffer from wishful thinking :)
@@JustIcelandic But that is not unusual! We had earthquake swarms over there all over the years…. Isak Finnbogsen has an underwater-drone and he had made a live stream out there, I think it was last year, in this lake. There where gas bubbles all over the ground.
Hang on here, how did you get yourself out of that mud? If you drive off road, we all know that sinking feeling hoping it gets better rather than worse. Cheers
In some pubquiz someone tried to translate (guess) something Icelandic into English and came up with: "Better a dead king than a living volcano!" Which was totally off as a translation, but I loved it...

Thank you. You are doing a very great and important job. The politicians are in big trouble. They can't get into sanity as long as they can be bribed.
7:15 I hope your car is not stuck in that soil 🤭😵💫
@ just icelandic - First, thanks for at great video. May i ask, all those earthquakes....can people on Iceland feel those ??
How about moving the capital to Akureyri with its lovely weather?
one crater now.
Yes, just like the first 3 eruptions but this could go one for some time
Hang on here, how did you get yourself out of that mud? If you drive off road, we all know that sinking feeling hoping it gets better rather than worse. Cheers
More afraid of bad politicians than volcanoes...
I need that on a tee shirt.
In some pubquiz someone tried to translate (guess) something Icelandic into English and came up with: "Better a dead king than a living volcano!" Which was totally off as a translation, but I loved it...
Have you written a book? If so I would be the first to buy it as I find your theories and knowledge fascinating. If you haven’t , you should.
