  • ***Make any of these mods at your own risk!!! Cutting holes in the roof of your van and cutting wires to your Starlink isn't for everyone... Also just because these mods worked for me doesn't mean they will work for you.
Remember I am telling you not to do this!!! However if you do a couple quick tips on the DC modification, before you unplug the dish wire from the Starlink modem, test that your dish has line of site and a good signal once you're in a good location with a good signal then you can try your DC hack. FYI you will likely need to cycle your 12v WIFI router the first time you set things up.
***Have have not done any long term testing of the DC system and only tried it out for a few hours in my driveway, my plan is to us Starlink with AC so I don't need to worry about reliability issues and I can get use to the system, if it becomes a major drain on my batteries running the inverter all of the time I might get into a full install.

Have you seen the starmount systems flat mod for starlink? I just had them do the mod and now it's permanantely attached to the top of my roof and even works while driving! You'll love it. Starmount Systems Encinitas,CA

Why disable the motors? I'm curious to see the how to video on that. Enjoying your mod vids! Super clever and detailed.

Great video, when will you post the video on how you made the hole in the roof as well as the addition of the motor on/off sitch. I am planning to do a similar step up in the near future …

it sounds like you literally run the starlink strapped onto the lid enclosed inside of the roam, is that the case? also do you have a link to the roam box hole hinge cover you have? or what I would look up to find that part? Thanks!

This is the holy grail for STO + Starlink: coming straight off the 48V bus, so you don't need to step up from 12V to 48V for the PoE adapter. Volta would *not* want to see this. How did you know where to tap in? And how big is your inline fuse?
Great work. I'm doing something similar literally right now. I use Zarges aluminum boxes on the roof of my 2020 Mode Classic, just for storage (IP67). Love them. Fit's the dish well. I should do a video...

100% do a video and please send me a link… it was kinda luck on knowing where to tap in… I was one of the unlucky few that had Volta issues when Volta had to find new solutions during the pandemic supply debacle days… as a result I had to take a lot of meter reads for them while troubleshooting… and that’s when I realized that the PoE was powered by the same voltage as the Volta Buss… being an electronics guy in a past life I had to see if I could hack it… LOL!

All great info! What did you use to attach the Starlink to the underside of the top of the Roam box? I have the same box on my roof already and want to be able do the same thing. Also....drilling that hole in the roof of my Storyteller would make me very nervous!!

So you don't need to actually mount on the stand and have the motors align to satellites? You just have it pointing up through the roof of the box and that works?

Correct, the dish will work pointing straight up (in most cases), in my testing it’s pretty consistent… obviously for absolute best performance it works it’s absolute best when pointing directly at the satellite, however to have the ability to use it without setup it’s worth the trade off. When I’m locked down to a location for a longer stay, I can just put the dish on the mount or stand. That’s why I wanted the flexibility.

fyi: MediaTek Semiconductor(Taiwan) has a chipset for smartphones which can communicate with satellites. Perhaps in two years or less there will be a T-Mobile smartphone with this chipset. T-Mobile and SpaceX(Starlink) already partnering to allow smartphones on Tmobile to have txt messaging service across the entire US(everywhere. Data services available sometime in the future). Info about this annoucement out on internet. Well, maybe in two years or less will be able to use smartphone as the satellite wifi hotspot and not need to drill holes in the RV roof for a dishy install.
