- How To Play Good Golf In The Rain. We spend so much money on our golf equipment. Taylormade Drivers, Scotty Cameron Putters, Titleist Pro V1 Balls, Ping Irons, but then it rains and we either take shelter, play rubbish and don’t enjoy it or even go inside and give up. What can we do to make sure that we play well in the rain, enjoy it and even win the competition we are playing in? In this video I take a look at key points that well help you play good golf in the rain.

I love playing in the rain the course is usually empty, so I just relax slow down and adjust to the conditions ball doesn't go as far take 1 more club putts a bit slower hell hit it a bit harder. Just enjoy being on the course.Happy Golfing Dave

Good advice James, but I'm an 80 percenter, first sign of rain and I'm off to the Bar! I play purely for pleasure and I don't find anything pleasurable in playing pissed wet through. Much better just to get pissed in the Bar.....Hic!
Since I am from Scotland I go out prepared like that all the time lol

I have to say I stopped watching after watching you throw the flag down on a wet green. And no mention of repairing pitch marks. Unless that happened after I stopped watching. No respect! Sorry
I don't compete in tournaments yet, but I usually play better in the rain. I think it's because I manage my expectations better and try to be extremely patient. Of course, as an 11-hcp, this what I should be doing every time I tee it up anyway! The other nice thing about the rain is it keeps most people away from the course, so it's an excellent chance to do some practicing. But it's like anything else, if you want to get better at playing in bad weather, you have to practice playing in bad weather. Now to learn how to play in strong winds.....ugh.
My home course is Melville Glades in Perth Western Australia, best thing about Perth is if rain is forecast you cancel that booking and play the next day. Umbrellas are used more in the summer for protection from the sun. When have been caught in the rain am a 80% er.

Worst weather, mystery snow storm (only 1 inch) appeared out of nowhere. Temp was about 30 degrees. For the first 5 holes there was a light snow covering on every green. Fairways were worse. Then the wind kicked up for the remainder of the round. But it was a boys weekend travel tournament so we soldiered on. My goal was simple. Avoid the 3 putt. Did not win the tourney, but made $300 on the 3 putt comp.

Worst conditions. Ramsey Golf Club Isle of Man. Golf society Stableford played in July. Absolutely tipped it down from the start. My partner and I were the only ones who finished. He got 26 points, I got 23. To add insult to injury because I came second I was docked 2 shots for the next comp. also developed a heavy cold a couple of days later in time for The start of a P&O cruise 😂

Here in New Zealand it's a winter competition season so we're used to it. In heavy rain I use wet weather gloves on both hands to keep warm as well. Playing in the rain helps a lot of skillsets like for example - the greens won't hold a spin (ball skips on the wet grass) and the ground around it is really soft and you don't get any run onto the green, so I use as big a lob as possible and land on, or land next to the green on the part closest to the pin. Putts can be tricky over standing water but it can be done and all putts tend to be straighter so hit em hard and straight lol. Good play in the rain has much higher reward if you do it well but the no1 tip is keep warm!
Hi James worst was 2 years ago at PONTEFRACT AND DISTRICT GOLF CLUB , I would not call it rain but I HAD RAIN JACKET ON OVER A JUMPER OVER TEE SHIRT AND WAS SOAKED AFTER 2 HOLES, I also wear glasses and had 5 rainbows per lens plus 10 balls , off the tee was fun but putting well which ball of 10 to hit .

Played 9 Holes in wind up to 50 kmh in some places it was hard but fun I just Wear goretex trousers and A poncho
What another great video 👏👏. The worst weather I have played in was earlier this year,heavy snow started falling on the 1st hole and by the time we was walking up the second the ground was pretty much covered,luckily it stopped snowing so we could continue. As we was walking down hole 7 it started raining with a very strong wind into our faces and it felt like we was being stabbed in the face because it was so cold but my partner and I continued our round and we both played well, we never quit because we always say golf is an outside sport
That takeaway is so flat. Not dissing it at all you're obviously very good it just looks mad!
I do better without an umbrella and won’t wear a rain gear. Just a hat and bag cover.

Couple of weeks ago Bradley park very strong wind and heavy rain and hail (only ones on coarse) funny part it’s the best I’ve played +4 over front 10 holes before darkness bet us

Worse condition I’ve played was 65 degrees on Christmas Eve here in Village country club California
James in inclement weather I carry 2 drivers if one grip gets wet then I try to dry it but use other driver, I HAVE A QUESTION WHICH HAS PROVOKED A DISCUSSION ( CAN YOU CARRY 2 PUTTERS ) IN BAD WEATHER OR NORMALLY. I understand you can double all other clubs but putter ?

If i feel my greenskeeper has had a poor week i make sure to do doughnuts in the cart all up the fairway....

Bandon Dunes, about 50 kph wind plus lots of rain. Definitely wasn't fully prepared for it. My rain gear wasn't up to the task. I'd say the best purchase you can make is a push cart with an umbrella holder and an extra large umbrella.
I think it was hazelhead golf course (9 hole public course in Aberdeen) in the snow with orange balls... We actually got kicked off, didn't know couldn't play in the snow. One of those golf courses where you put money in a box and sign your name to play.
Don't play too much in the rain out here in West Texas. When it does rain there is usually severe weather and lightning so I run for the club house. Played a couple of winter tourneys where it started sleeting or snowing. The light snow isn't bad but the sleet is awful. Probably the worst weather I've played a tournament in was a Haboob style dust storm. 45mph winds and dust so thick it was almost impossible to see 100 yards. Yep......Texas weather can be terrible.

Played on Friday, 24th, in the great golf challenge for cancer research. 72 holes in a day.
Startled at 5 am in darkness, not easy, rain started on 2nd by the third it was horizontal hailstones. Fortunately didn't last too long but rain and wind all day on and off. Changed socks and shoes after each round. Brolly was smashed by wind on the third round. Not easy but sun came out eventually, it's only f*****g water! 😆
This is ok for golfers like yourself who hit it a long way but us others carry more clubs drinks so the bag is heavier. like now at woolley park golf club its carry only . paul
Sheffield Ameteur Open last Saturday was brutal, consistent heavy rain for most of the round. Average score was about 79, strong wind added to the toughness. I made the top 16 and qualified for the next round with 77. Other rain tips I would say are:
1. If using a trolley consider the rain covers by people like Powakaddy, 100% waterproof which is good for any valuables, food, car keys and grips
2. Thicker rough will be harder to get through when wet, watch out for the club face turning left
3. Off the tee try and favour the club that carries more, the 1 iron is king when firm but the 3 wood will destroy it when sodden
I'd go on but I'm boring myself haha.
I play when it rains, course is like a millionaires course, if you are thinking of buying a golf trolley, get one with a built in umbrella holder, great for keeping things dry.

Played on an Easter long weekend in pouring/driving rain. Forgot my mobile phone was in a non waterproof pocket and it got destroyed.

Great vid! My son and I braved heavy horizontal rain to play our comp this morning. Lots of casual water, hard to judge the greens and despite having excellent wet weather gear, eventually we both got soaked through. However, we were out there loving it and young Will and I had 31 and 34 points respectively and are a bit tougher now! Take care and cheers from a rainy Sydney - Dave and Will
