Arrangement by Farya Faraji, vocals by Farya Faraji and Kelareh Kabiri. This is a folk song of the category Nisiotika, which refers to the songs of the Aegean and Dodecanese islands. Most of my investigations when filming the video pointed to Limnos being the island where the song originated. Nisiotika songs are primarily dance songs to be danced in groups; they tend to be in double time signatures, typically follow the Malfoof -like rhythm found across this region of the world, and shares many typological features with Cretan music, especially when in the Dodecanese. In my estimation, Nisiotika and Cretan music can be perceived as two highly overlapping forms of music. The proto-typical Nisiotika arrangement uses a laouto to provide basic power chords following the rythm described, as well as a violin or lyra playing the main melody. I wanted my instrumentation to be more spruced up, so I used a whole panoply of Greek instruments: a bouzouki, outi, tambouras, sandouri and violin play the main melody, whilst my island laouto provides the basic power chords. The percussions are provided by a darbuka. The clip was filmed during my voyage in May 2023 in Crete, Gavdos, the Dodecanese (mainly Rhodes) and the Cyclades, namely Naxos, Paros and Milos, with one shot of the southernmost tip of the Peloponnese and continental Greece from my previous voyage last year. Lyrics in Greek: H English translation: Our patchwork boat , sewed one thousand times We were sewing it all the time and it was always torn apart Our boat, old biddy Needs rows, old biddy Needs sails, old biddy If only my mother knew I'm working on the boat She would sent me my clothes and my old breeches Heave-ho one, on the sails Heave-ho two, in the village Heave-ho three, at her house. From Ayvali we set off for Duna, On the way we were freezing, we got caught in a storm. We left Smyrna, loaded with gunpowder and the captain was shouting, they were drunk. And if my mother asks you what I did on the trawler, to say that I was sucking my stinky pants off her.
You forgot βρακα (vraka) version, Farya. Tell the world about the vraka version for beloved Cyprus and the Dodecanese. Your voice is beautiful in this one and thats your Mom! Beautiful.
As a greek, I am amazed by your accent. Even though you are iranian, you have a very clear accent and handle greek very well. Your content never ceases to amaze me!
Because he knows persian his greek is great plus the effort with the instrumrental composition which is so often over looked or not done well but your sound is fantastic x
I wasnt saying he spoke perfect greek ! idiot! his greek is good tho! everthing in this clip regarding greek music he said was soo true! so glad sombody has the knowlege he does
For me that I am Greek it is an honor and really noble what you are doing, you show to the world our true music and tell them "this is real Greek music, it is beautiful and you don't have to feel ashamed for it!"
There is an expression in greek about people who have the talent of speaking foreign languages fluently. We say "he/she speaks farsi" and that means one is speaking a foreign language perfectly. What is it about farsi that makes Iranian people so good with languages? Because your greek accent is perfect. Just perfect. And that's no easy feat, it's very hard for a Greek to be tricked about weather somebody is Greek or not. You did it perfectly. And it seems that you are good with languages in general. So what is it about farsi that makes Iranian people so talented with foreing languages? That's what I'd like to know. Also, I'm half Limnian and didn't know that this song is from Limnos. I assumed it's just one more nisiotiko song played in Limnos among their own, didn't know that it was actually their own. I should have known, because of the lyrics. Limnian songs have satyrical lyrics exclusively, they are either mocking somebody else or themselves. And I have to say that it pains me the fact that the Limnian lyra is progressively lost; fewer and fewer people know how to play this instrument. It was a family thing so a well kept secret for a long time, so not many people know how to play these days. Thank you very much for your educational video and lovely, absolutely lovely music.
damn man, i dont know how you do it, but before i had zero interest in such songs from my country (cosnidered them kind cringe). Then BAM, you beautiful bastard come in and cover the song and suddenly im interested.
Over these last few weeks I feel like our favorite persian/mesopotamian/ old englishman/ french crusader/ roman/ occitan is becoming more and more greek with these songs. They're all bops
Its frightening how its instantly recognisably you, but still passable as the accent you imitate. Just another one of your chameleoline performances. Positively lucious looking btw. ❤
I am a California girl, born and bred, but I have been bellydancing since I was six, and you are reminding me of all the lovely music I used to dance to. Thank you!
I heard this song on one of the radio stations in Serbia and was really astonished. You are becoming increasingly famous 😊 good job, greetings from Belgrade

I think I recognized your mom's voice. I love when she invites herself into your creations. What a beautiful video musically and visually once again. A nice artistic journey!
Just the thing I needed a few hours before boarding a plane that will take me to Greece. Granted, I'll be in the middle of Thessaloniki getting chewed up by all kinds of bureaucracy and not on some lovely island, but still.
My brother I respect and appreciate you for your meticulous work. It's obvious to me that you are having fun with it and it's very much inspiring me to look for my own niche in life. To be unique and free just like this dude Farya. All the best. Είς Υγείαν! 🇬🇷🤍🇮🇷
You again amazed me by choosing this piece of Greek island music, of your beautiful voice, your perfect Greek, your instrumental interpretation and off course your stunning ground footage and aerial visuals.
