Without the UA-cam community I would not have bought the Deluge. Firstly, because I wouldn’t have known about it, and secondly, because I knew how helpful all the videos would be. So thanks a lot for sharing, interesting video!
Great video thanks. I've been playing around with this kind of thing on the deluge and what I notice is that I can listen to a simple randomised loop on repeat for so much longer than a regular loop. The way they change and evolve just delights the ears.
Thank you so much. You have a special skill in presenting your ideas and your workflow. I learned so much not only in producing musically generative sequences but about how to use the Deluge. I'm a fan.
We all have instinctive favourites in rhythm and melody which can lead even the most inspired musician to become set in their ways. Anything which trips us out of our comfort zone has got to be good for broadening our perspective on creativity IMHO. One interesting development from looking back on music fabricated this way might be to look for snapshots within the generated strings and splicing samples that sound pleasing for future stepping stones to music.
Exactly! Resampling a randomly generated phrase can be a great starting point for a new song. I also think there's something to be said about just listening to these generative loops for a while and seeing which melodies stick with you. Thanks for watching and for your thoughtful comment.
Just chiming in with the other commentators: Another wonderful tutorial. Love the pace and the calm way you walk us through the set. Extremely well done, mate! Thank you! Would also love to watch you just making/developing music without a script or topic. Your thought process and workflow itself is inspiring.
Thank you for your videos! I recently got a deluge and its the most fun hardware I ever got. Your videos are relaxt to listen to and I learn something every time!
Thank you very very much for this video. I'm kinda new to electronic music creation and the whole generative music thing is so fascinating to me. This video is immensely helpful to get me started.
I love your videos, however, the white screens in between are very bright. I'd recommend a light font and a dark background. But besides that, I learn a lot from your videos :)
This is excellent Simon. One needs a certain degree of expertise with the deluge before being able to i pull this off, so very well done. I’m suitably inspired. Cheers. Lee
Another great one! Really inspiring and well paced and explained 🙂 For the stuff that can't be tied to random or LFOs like the decimation on your hihat, you can try hitting record and wiggling the knob to record some automation into your sequence, then maybe set the length for the hihat pattern to an odd number of beats so it repeats in a way that's different each time.
Hey Simon, can't add much to all the comments already there.. just please keep posting this really inspiring tutorials, you're a master! Very inspiring and can't wait for the next one :) Thank you!
Great video! I just subscribed. Having trouble making long interesting jams. Can’t seem to get out of the 4 measured or 16 steps. I am old and new to all this gear. Ha. Any tips to make longer sequences easier?
Thanks! I might in the future, but I'm quite happy with this version and screen. I like how the simple interface forces me to rely on my ears more, so I don't feel like it's urgent or would change much if I got the oled.
Basically, you could put all notes on the first position... they will sound together the first time but then never again... Then you can work in 1 bar I Put a C E G together for example on 1 spot.... everything within the scale. Nice video ;)
You're right! I made it unnecessarily complicated here - just emter the notes, alternative the note length and probability, and that's all you'd need. Thanks for your comment and for watching
Cool. What an amazing machine we have. What would be the easiest way to then introduce a key change but retain all the same parameters? Could that also be randomized somehow, within sensible musical rules like 3rds or 5ths?
Good question! You can very easily copy tracks by pressing on them and simultaneously pressing an empty track. That could be your starting point, and then you'll just need to move a few notes around in the copies version. Have fun!
I do have one question (at least :) is it possible to save the instruments you've taught us how to make so that we can open them up and play them in/on other 'Songs' ?
Yes! While in the Clip (instrument track), hold and press Save and press Synth. Name your instrument, and that's it. It will persist into other projects, and you can turn the Deluge off and it will still be there when you start it back up :)
Great video. When you tie the parameters of a single note all to the random modulator does each parameter in that note get the same value or is each modulation a different random value all generated at the same time?
Thanks for watching! I honestly don't know, I should look into this. It's probably the same value in the same clip, but different across different clips, like LFOs, but that's just me guessing.
@@simon_jakobsson Not 110% sure, but I think there is one random value per note playing, so when tying different parameters to random, they all get the same value (per note event).
From the Deluge manual: "X and Y: MIDI MPE support will be added in a future Deluge firmware update. These modulation sources refer to the horizontal and vertical sideways pressure which a user of an MPE-compatible MIDI controller may apply to each key with the finger pressing it."
Actually, note-probability is not per se generative, it does not generate anything. Generative is something that generates new things, like new sequence.
Fair enough, but we're getting into semantics - a sequence that is impossible to predict and ever-changing, using sounds that are randomly generated and modulated is close enough where I feel like it warrants the use of the word Generative. Thanks for watching and for keeping us honest! :)
Great video! I just subscribed. Having trouble making long interesting jams. Can’t seem to get out of the 4 measured or 16 steps. I am old and new to all this gear. Ha. Any tips to make longer sequences easier?
Thanks! That's a tough nut to crack, but what I tend to do is experiment with the bass; you can keep most other things the same, and try to change the bass progression, and if that starts to sound good, you link it back to the original bassline and boom: now you have a second section to build on. Blues progressions could be worth exploring too. Have fun!
Without the UA-cam community I would not have bought the Deluge. Firstly, because I wouldn’t have known about it, and secondly, because I knew how helpful all the videos would be. So thanks a lot for sharing, interesting video!

I love your style and approach, Simon. You have rekindled my love for my Deluge. Thank you for your efforts!
Damn, that's a very kind comment, thank you :)
A really organic method of music creation. Thanks, I was unfamiliar with the Deluge. Nice work Simon!
Glad you liked it, thanks for watching :)
I like your relaxed style and honestly love the thought of one day owning a Deluge. Thanks Simon!
Thank you very much! Yeah, they are great, I recommend highly.

I'm glad you like them, thank you!
Great demo and I really like that you built synths as part of the demo.
Thanks pal, I appreciate it :) I should come back and do more of these, I always have so much fun with the Deluge
Thank you for your videos, dude. You helped me decide to pick one of these up a few weeks ago. Been loving it. Will you make more deluge videos?
Thanks for saying! Glad you like them! I don't have immediate plans to make more videos, but who knows, maybe!
With RSKT the best videos on the Deluge. Simple and clear explanations!
Thanks, appreciate it!
Very well done! Thank you.
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching!

Awesome, thanks for watching and have fun with the Deluge, it's such a great machine.
Do you also release music? Or do you just experiment and make videos?
@@keukensessies1231 It's just this for now, it's just a hobby I do on the side for fun. Maybe one day, who knows :)

Yeah you're right, and it would have worked here, but I wanted it to be self-generated where possible :)
wow, thanks for sharing. love it

Thank you, doctor!
Now I am relaxed and feel much, much better.

Brilliant! Just got my Deluge, so this is something I have to learn more about!
I'm excited for you, the Deluge is a wonderful instrument. Have fun!

which has the best randomization possibilities: Polyend play or Deluge?

What do the X and Y buttons, top right of keyboard do?
