A magical partnership of Yuri and Mikhail, they always work so well together. Fantastic tone from both. It was by attending Yuri's masterclasses - as an observer - that I taught myself the viola.
I'm blown away by even the first phrase.... one bow stroke, amazing tone with rubato... true Bashmet style and so marvellous! He's definitely in his prime here and still going strong today!!!
What a shame that this pianist played with the lid down...the piano lacks clarity. Also, this is a piece for two instruments, and the piano has the melody more than half of the time in this piece, and yet one can't tell here. As wonderful as Bashmet is, the camera should remain on both players.
I agree the camera should be on both players and with your point about the melodic importance of the piano. I do think, because the viola does not generally carry well, that the piano lid should be down. The pianist, in my opnion, actually does a beautiful job of bringing out the melody.
The pianist should have the more prominent voice at the beginning of the last movement, as the violist is playing the alto line of the melody--I would definitely agree with you there.
As a concert pianist, I can tell you that a piano lid should NEVER be down. It should only be put down when it is stored or moved. The piano was designed to be played with the lid up. An open lid has nothing to do with volume, but rather with clarity. If you wanted a pianist to play softer, just ask the pianist to play softer, but when the lid is down, the sound is muffled, and a pianist overcompensates by playing LOUDER.

скажите, пожалуйста какого года запись?
1989г.
With all due respect to one of my favorite violists, Yuri Bashmet, but he kind of reminds me of a tall version of Lord Farquad from Shrek.
En que año tocó esto?

I stand corrected. Thank you for the education, and I'll keep that in mind.
