Journey to Ixtlan is the third book by Carlos Castaneda, published as a work of non-fiction by Simon & Schuster in 1972. It is about an alleged apprenticeship to the Yaqui "shaman," Don Juan.
The title of this book is taken from an allegory that is recounted to Castaneda by his "benefactor" who is known to Carlos as Don Genaro ( Genaro Flores ), a close friend of his teacher don Juan Matus. "Ixtlan" turns out to be a metaphorical hometown ( or Place / Position of Being ) to which the "sorcerer" or warrior or man of knowledge is drawn to return, trying to get home. After the work of "stopping", his changed perspective leaves him little in common with ordinary people, who now seem no more substantial to him than "phantoms." The point of the story is that a man of knowledge, or sorcerer, is a changed being, or a Human closer to his true state of Being, and for that reason he can never truly go "home" to his old lifestyle again.
In Journey to Ixtlan Castaneda essentially reevaluates the teachings up to that point. He discusses information that was apparently missing from the first two books regarding stopping the world which previously he had only regarded as a metaphor.

A young native friend and myself were reading these books in our mid-teens. Highly influential for us, we had access to numerous psychedelics back then, and we used these writings as manuals. These teachings are real, although where and when they originated is not for me to say. Shamanism is the spiritual practice that all organized religions oppose, because it exposes the fundamental fact that we're already THERE.

In 1998 at the age of 25, I went on a sabbatical all over the united States, my first stop was Storm Lake IA, looking for myself and to grow in my spiritual path. There at the library I found the teachings of Don Juan and as it was preset I kept finding the other books in order in the next towns I went to. Until the end of my journey in Las Vegas NV where in a used book store I found the entire collection. In Vegas my life changed for the better. In 2012, while going through some very difficult times thanks to my personal mistakes traveling in a public bus I noticed an old broken down book just like myself I first my ego didn't let me pay close attention but something made me look and to my surprise it was the teachings of Don Juan, I took the book and promised to read it again but I never did. In 2021 I had fallen from grace again and I started reading the book, but stopped. Finally in July 2023 I finished reading the book and went ahead to listening in audio books a separate reality and now journey to ixtlan. Hopefully psilocybin will help me wake up this time around. The last time for me was ‘75 & I recalled Don Juan saying that the energy expended was very great, knowing what I must do, finding that in doing those things & that in pursuing relationships, there was the work involved that only my intent would see me through. Quite different from mere revelations, quite energy conservative in execution, and revealing only what the actual work will reveal, these things and emotions, the path with heart for example, still learning both the aggrandizements and the lessons at 69

Carlos Castaneda was the real sorcerer, if you can call him that. I believe he invented Don Juan as a way to represent his other self, to connect people with the invisible and Ill-perceived reality understood by once story and knowledge telling native peoples. These experiences are indeed real, only it is Don Juan who is fictitious.

@@ambiphy1111 Your theory is interesting and after pondering it I felt that Carlos Castaneda lived for part of his life as apprentice sorcerer with Don Juan Matus as his teacher. How else could he have made such a detailed report about all the confrontations and mental gymnastics he was more or less forced to endure and work through, in order to become a real sorcerer? If not Don Juan Matus, some other teacher must have had a role in Carlos Castaneda's life, to establish a status you expect him to have achieved. Without a teacher? Hmmm, is that possible?

Don Juan is to Carlos what Krishna is to Arjuna:
      AN FULLY ENLIGHTENED BEING.
An enlightened being right here in modern times. The stuff you only hear about hundreds of years after it happened.

Journey to Ixtlan was merely an introduction/tip of the iceberg to Don Juan's vast trove of knowledge ... however, there were many many great and priceless lessons to learn from in order to finetune one's personal life for the warrior's path ... personally, I consider the crown jewels of his whole thing with Don Juan Matus to be "Power of Silence" and "Fire from Within"... I am so grateful to Castaneda's work for opening my eyes to the fact that there are infinite number paths (after all ever-present contrast is the bedrock of unending creativity and infinite possibility) ... just as raindrops that fall on Earth have many different and countless paths before returning back to the Ocean/Source.

"The point of the story is that a man of knowledge, or sorcerer, is a changed being, or a Human closer to his true state of Being, and for that reason he can never truly go "home" to his old lifestyle again." And also that after the man of knowledge has "shifted", other humans start to feel like predators, even those that pretend to be shy or hard to get. See the section in Ixtlan where Genaro avoids group after group of users only to almost fall prey the final one who initially acts disinterested but then casually invites Genaro back to her family's home for dinner. I'm sure this reflected CC's experience with his own students, who put up a good front of impeccability but inevitably became needy in one way or another. In CC's mythos, the path of the warrior is essentially a path of solitude, and a warrior can only engage with non-sorcerer's through controlled folly.

      A decent summary that.

    • @devonseamoor
      @devonseamoor 6 років тому +9

Well said, Michael Webber. I fully understand what's meant by a warrior engaging with non-sorcerers through controlled folly. Alpha males and females receive a lot of flak for the same reason, being powerful. Therefore also showing the inadequacy of it in those around them and sparking jealousy, anger of frustration and even openly expressed sabotage.
I've experienced this often in my life, first unaware of this dynamic, when younger. It sparked my feelings of guilt and fear of being powerful, due to the programming of a Calvinistic church institute in Holland, that didn't allow women to vote until the late 60's.
I know the fear of taking responsibility for one's nature and the expression of it in freedom.
Later, I've begun to transform this program and to embody my true nature and stand in my power, while fully aware when those around me try to tackle me, or feed on it for the wrong reasons, like when they've given away their power and believe that others should rule them.
Which is always a failing scenario, turning into co-dependency and covered up sabotage.
The lesson for me, wrapped in this lifetime, is to not hide my vulnerability as a human being, accepting that being powerful also includes being vulnerable. A huge surprise to me!

    • @devonseamoor
      @devonseamoor 5 років тому +6

An excellent observation, Michael Webber. I believe that part of the relationship between a teacher and student, when spiritual and shamanic work is involved, the digging into the nature of being human, is to make it end properly, with the student standing on its own feet on all levels. At least, as much as is possible, for being human means also being imperfect.
In that process, knowledge of energy, the energy system of men and women, the chakra-system, the portals through which we experience and explain our reality, a teacher, in such a relationship, in the best scenario, is the wisest of the two, due to experience and position.
In South America are shamans working in all sorts of conditions. Some are fully living from their instinctual senses, without any form of self-reflection and integrity of how they use their energy, which may lead to abusive practice and the creation of co-dependency between teacher and student. Both thrive on it.
Creating an emotional dependency in students or patients, including sex as well. One of many aspects in shamanic-magic practice, is the involvement of astral entities. When awareness of it is absent, forms of abomination may occur. Voodoo in Africa is similar to South American shamanic practice, when manipulation is involved and motives are mainly unconscious.
Evidence of this came to me by people in my life, sharing their experiences and observations. It took me many years to understand that a person can achieve enormous amounts of knowledge, practical training in the use of energy and manipulation of nature forces, also healing, including impressive performances on stage with large audiences and at the same time remain uneducated in the use of their energy and power, leading to a loss of integrity and moral standards.
Which, I believe, is the reason why we witness so many things in the present world going wrong, with power and money in the hands of people who have lost touch with reality, with a conscience safely in the deep freeze. I'm myself on a quest for the unveiling of my own programs and motives, digging in my own human nature, accepting that condition on planet Earth. Calming my analytical mind.
Learning to be patient with those who act in blindness of their own motives, causing havoc. Often I shake my head, wondering how many of us live with eyes wide shut. In ignorance. In all of that observing and pondering, my learning curve is to not separate myself in superiority and alienating myself in that way.

Michael Webber ,I like your comment, but if we read the full book list of CC, your description is more of a part of the surface, about the methods of a man on the path to an idealized realization or actual achievement of something, not unlike the trainee traditions in taoism. The main subject in CC's books = What is the nature of the Cosmos, and how much freedom of the ("physical"/actual energy-) soul does the human being have within a cosmic "web" of energy filaments. He is philosophizing by joining ideas from many different traditions from around the planet.

(The Journey to Ixtlan is about "how to prepare or reduce the human ego ,in order to open up to the path of what in these books are the "nahuatl"-brujo knowledge, while some of the other books such as Tales of power, The art of dreaming instead slide gradually more into literal descriptions of the Cosmos'basic energy structures and the human place in them- Here we see that Castanyeda has started reading physics more and more, but continued with his dialogue novel approach, probably because it was selling like that, to an expected segment of audience, helping him to make a living)

Don Juan made it clear his were not teachings indigenous to Mexico. These teachings do not originate from any physical location. They were the essential human spirituality of all, until Imperialism made its dark march across the Earth, and stole the tribalism from cultures one by one. The spirituality of the Celtic civilization was practically identical, before the the Greeks and Romans brought Empire to Europe and destroyed what we were. Any identification with a people or location is folly.

I read this book years ago and learned to get to the first stage of dreaming -- looking at my hands and sustaining the integrity of what I was seeing for as long as possible. I only began the next stage -- transporting myself to a previously chosen location -- accomplishing it twice but then, somehow, not being able to do it again.
I really appreciate the audiobook, although the reader seems to give Don Juan a pissed-off voice with too much consistency. Sometimes it makes sense, but when I read the print version, I never imagined Don Juan coming across pissed off 60-70% of the time.
Nonetheless, the reader had a great voice and puts feeling into it, so overall listening is a great experience.

I picked up a hitch hiker who ended up living with me for some time. He introduced me to Carlos's books. Later when I came home again.. I saw this book and almost exploded in sheer joy. My heart goes out to the universe for how I found his works.. Or how they were always there and how they made themselves known. Deeply thankful.

How's it going ? Are you still finding wisdom ?
Myself , I had found a path for my life through the introduction of these books, and even that I found my own path it's great in itself to have a path, A path gives one a measure to measure up to one self and not to others, I use certain ideas from Carlos still for example An impeccable Warrior , I have been Meditating for years and found many internal movements and vibrations and use or should I say "Try" to find answers by use of the word "Impeccable" to try different ways for my path and if I find it has improved my seeing 👀 or vibrations , I do my best to try keep bias out by testing or whatever to see if the choice I made was an Impeccable decision. It keeps life interesting and if I can add some humour to keep myself light then my path ✨️ has become more fun and enjoyable not worrying about how obscure my life has become !
Many Gems of Wisdoms in these books, just because Carlos didn't "Fly or Walk" out of here doesn't mean a thing, I have had many "Out of body experiences" so personally I know we have another body and by doing and experimenting I have been able to control and also get over the fear of being controlled.

You start climbing up when you are young, you reach the top in middle age, and then you have to climb down (in base camp), and then you are old.
You have life experience, You know the mountain, but you end up with not enough time to use it practicly.

This is Castaneda at the height of his powers. I just re-read Cormac McCarthy's The Crossing, which is shot through with Castaneda's influence. Ixtlan contains this important passage:
"Is all this true, don Juan?"
"To say yes or no to your question is doing. But since you are learning not-doing I have to tell you that it really doesn't matter whether or not all this is true. It is here that a warrior has a point of advantage over the average man. An average man cares that things are either true or false, but a warrior doesn't. An average man proceeds in a specific way with things that he knows are true, and in a different way with things that he knows are not true. If things are said to be true, he acts and believes in what he does. But if things are said to be untrue, he doesn't care to act, or he doesn't believe in what he does. A warrior, on the other hand, acts in both instances. If things are said to be true, he would act in order to do doing. If things are said to be untrue, he still would act in order to do not-doing. See what I mean?"

  • @LanceisLawson

Having known the entire Castaneda series I consider Journey To Ixtlan his finest effort. Unfortunately we will never know where the truth ends and fabrication begins. It can be said that truth is unique to each individual and as such truth is always in flux. However science has proven that things can indeed be broken down into ever smaller elements until there is only the element in question present. So yes truth can be apprehended, assuming of course that there is a truth to be apprehended in the first place. Literature OTOH is free of the confines imposed by science and we are left with more questions than there are answers. But given enough time even the truth becomes just a good story and conversely a just a good story can acquire a gloss of truth. The clock has been ticking away on this for a very long time. As I recall the traveler never makes it to Ixtalan which is perhaps the core element present in the story.

"You crossed your eyes," he said emphatically. "That's the technique; you must have done that, although you don't remember it." Don Juan then described the technique, which he said took years to perfect, and which consisted of gradually forcing the eyes to see separately the same image. The lack of image conversion entailed a double perception of the world; this double perception, according to don Juan, allowed one the opportunity of judging changes in the surroundings, which the eyes were ordinarily incapable of perceiving...
"All I can do is give you the technique. Once you learn to separate the images and see two of everything, you must focus your attention in the area between the two images. Any change worthy of notice would take place there, in that area."
    - Carlos Castaneda, 'Journey to Ixtlan: The Lessons of Don Juan'

I read Castaneda books some 50 + Years ago... yes psycadelics etc were everywhere then and much used and talked about, I still have Respect for The Mushroom ! But I have pause to like or dislike his writings... I have moved on and I am more critical in my thinking/reading. They (books) were right ? for their time and now...... ?

I read these when I was a young man and had problems putting these books down. The narrator does an excellent job, and captures how I pictured Don Juan. I also did not know if Castaneda was fictonalizing Don Juan or not. I do think the author was trying to pass on a knowledge that he had studied.
