Thank you Craig for clarifying. So many on UA-cam advocating high fat carnivore for fast loss & it doesn’t work. At least for a lot of people. Makes total sense that if you have body fat to lose you need more protein to maintain muscles & less fat so that your body can access your own fat stores.

Fasting makes me obsess over food, whereas PSMF eating is easy and satisfying. I'm slowing trimming 300-500g of fat from my weight each week, which, after years of watching it climb in the opposite direction, is so satisfying. Thanks for the great info!

Thank you so much for clarifying. If you are in maintenance, then you do well with increased fat intake. If you are not in maintenance & have weight to lose, increasing fat will cause weight gain. This is what happened to me. I did not hear any of the butter people caution of this possibility.

She went to Russia under doctors supervision and dry fasted for 8 & 9 days and healed her lyme. Dry Fasting is very common in russia. The doctor she went to has been dry fasting patients for 20+ years and other health issues with great success. he wrote a book (cant remember his name but Michelle mentions his name in most vids). he also has a clinic in Spain. he has a site (sorry cant remember that channel name) where people post their 9 day fast daily diary experience. Thank you for this video! I too follow this doctor's social media channels and look up to him, but I have gotten so confused from all of this conflicting info considering that he advocates to eat all of the fatty red meat you can eat until you're comfortably stuffed, which didn't work for me. I did this exactly and got to my ideal body weight but then slowly gained 20lbs by eating as much as I could last year. Apparently, I can easily over eat on keto and carnivore. I'm on my second week doing PSMF and it's definitely easier than doing an extended fast. I did lose a pound after my first week so I'm pretty psyched to keep going.

I have recently unsubscribed to so many channels, because I find it so distracting and inappropriate to listen to people who sometimes are more interested in putting other people down than they are explaining their own recommendation. So well explained, thanks!
In many carnivore groups the advice is at least 200 g of fat, eat sticks of butter.
The gurus that are proponents of overeating on fat wouldn't gain weight even if they were on SAD, but for the most ppl it is not the case and eating almost 2000 kcals of fat a day is a sure way to gaining weight even if carbs are low.
Another nonsense they have been parroting around is saying that ppl are eating too much protein.
Well, it is really not that easy to overeat on protein.
I'd rather stick to advice and research and many years of work and experience of doc's like Ted Naiman, Bill Campbell, Lyle Mcdonald and you and Maria.

I don't know why people complain about it either. If you eat alternate days, you eat your same calories and protein amounts one day and then don't eat for 36 hours. If you do PSMF, you are almost eating the same amount as the one day just doing it in two. Some of those people eat two or three pounds of meat a day on top of the fat. I can't do that. I struggle with hitting my calories and can't eat the PSMF bread. Too bad because it is good.

Yes! I tell my husband that these Keto people are crazy when they say animals in the first human diet were high fat. Lamb and Cows for example are domesticated animals. All animals from original man were quite lean, and it is proven they ate plants, and even used plants as medicine. The reason why people have a difficult time with plants is because they have damaged their bodies to such an unhealthy state, so it can't appropriately digest and have changed their intestinal enzymes. Fat has very little nutrition, so if you eat a typical 80/20 keto diet, you deprive yourself of the truly body healing that occurs from the amino acids, found only in meat , poultry and fish. As a former vegan, I personally discovered how detrimental plant protein is. Even if you are able to get enough protein, this has to be modified in some way and is ultimately going to make you sick. The importance of protein is the most important macro....when you add fat or carbs in any form (a veg is a carb).....that is a source of energy. Again...fats and carbs are only energy. Fat is important to absorb the nutrients found in protein; however, too much fat, is energy. You just need enough for energy if you truly want to burn the existing fat on your body. I am so thankful you posted this video....❤❤❤

Craig, can you tell us why protein substrates are only talked about to make glucose through gluconeogenesis when several substrates can be used, including some obtained from fat stores. Is it quality over quantity or simply a matter of efficiency?

    • @craigemmerich
      @craigemmerich Рік тому +5

Yes, glycerol from the breakdown of fat can be used to make glucose too. But it is a pretty small amount compared to the body's daily needs. In the study linked in the description (which I included a full pdf copy) it shows that in the first 2-3 days of water fasting they lost 1 1/3 pounds lean mass per day. Then it went down to like 1/3 pound per day after that. That is due to them eating the standard American diet before the fast meaning it took 2-3 days to switch to burn fat as fuel (keto adapt). So you can assume that someone starting the fast keto would lose 1/3 pound lean mass per day.

Yes. But if you look at the bodies proteins, muscle is the easiest to sacrifice. Your body is replacing tons of skin every day and not having enough is a problem. You don’t want to take any protein from organs or bones. Losing a little from muscle is the least detrimental.

@@christieanderson1330 k. I'd love for someone to scrounge up enough itty bitty wild eggs and make a psmf bread. Without a kitchen aid. Over a wood fire. No bread pans or dutch ovens either b/c you can't find those in the wild. You can never win with the natural argument but I appreciate and understand the sentiment. It's a pain to make butter, I do it all the time. But it's still a "natural" byproduct, isn't it? Like egg whites?

I’m drinking only pea protein isolate at 90% protein by calories. I’m around 17% body fat and cutting. Am I going to get sick of rabbit starvation?

Hi! My goals are to get back down below 10% bodyfat. I was very lean a few months ago but lost discipline in the gym and the kitchen. I want to get back to lean as soon as possible, because I don't enjoy being in a deficit. I have chosen pea protein over ore complete proteins because this is the cheapest option. I bought 5 pounds for only $25!@@MariaEmmerich

I would just focus on proper macros and weight training to build lean mass as you lose fat. You'll know once you've achieved a physique you are happy with. It's pretty incredible what transformations can be achieved especially when people focus less on the number on the scale and more with their body composition: www.insider.com/photos-women-look-different-same-weight-2018-3

I don't do well counting and measuring. But your calculator says I need just over 1,000 kcal per day, 70 g protein. So maybe I can just eat cod and shrimps on PSMF and keep it simple. I only need to lose 10 stubborn and annoying pounds. I also have SIBO/IBS, my gut bloats with food, even when I'm essentially carnivore... So it's probably all the fat I was eating! Lol.
Now I understand how the bulletproof coffee perpetuated my weight gain from less than 10% body fat to 30%.

What is your height? The minimum daily protein requirement for a 5ft tall women is 80g, so your protein is too low. Be sure to read the notes at the top of the calculator: mariamindbodyhealth.com/calculator/
