I love that Anna donated the money she was going to make to Charities. Not wanting to cash in on a story about a Serial killer who hurt so many women says so much about her as a person.
The true hero of this story is the runaway girl who conned him into not only surviving her ordeal but ultimately his capture and incarceration. The fact that she came back and testified at his parole hearing to keep him behind bars makes her even more of a GOAT.
Not so fun fact. I intersected with Rodney Alcala when I was 14 years old. I was cutting through a church parking lot on my way to my friends house and he stopped me asking to take my picture. He wanted me to keep posing and I felt very unsafe and ran into a busy street. I never forgot his face because it was so unique. Years later I heard a podcast on true crime that sounded a lot like my experience. I was able to go online and look him up and there was the face of the man that took my picture. I was extremely fortunate to escape him but every time I hear about him it takes me back.
Not sure if you know this already but they’ve released a lot of his photos, most of the subjects haven’t been identified. You could look though them and see if your photo is there, if you’re comfortable with that (I would understand if it’s too much) I’m not exactly sure who you would contact if your photo is there though. Thanks for sharing your story and I’m glad you’re still here today.
Wow!! That must've been a sick feeling, realizing who he was after the fact. Especially off of details from his other crimes... that's absolutely crazy. 😢 SO glad you're still here! Thank you for sharing
The parking lot scene was spot on. I actually started getting those feelings we all have experienced. Funny, I also told my husband about this - he was kind, but did not understand either. Anna did such an excellent job in capturing what we women experience all the time. I was a teenager in the 70's and this brought back so many memories. I confessed to my husband that I still turn my head away from a car that might come up beside me, especially at night, so the driver won't see my face.
Anna Kendrick absolutely set a new bar for thrillers and serial killer movies all together and she told a disturbing story in an exhilarating and respectful way. So many in the genre think shock and awe at all expense is necessary; but she ultimately chilled and disturbed us while utmost respecting these womens’ stories and handling their traumas with care.
My brother complained about the first five minutes and how it made the rest of the movie “feel gross” and I was like. Yeah. It’s supposed to. You’re not supposed to feel good watching a man killing women.
I heard a couple stories from fans who expressed that Anna Kendrick was the meanest, most rude celebrity they'd ever met. TBH, Woman of the Hour puts into perspective why a woman in public might react in a less-than-positive way to strangers. With everything Chappel Roan has pointed out, and all the ways in which we, as women, are expected to smile and deal with even the most intrusive and violating behaviors. I think we all need to recognize that woman shouldn't be expected to 'be nice'.
All of us women need to recognize that we NEED to be nice, and yes we Should Be Expected to be nice! Problem is women are gullible and easily deceived with/by ego boosting words, hence Eve falling for satans lie that she/people can become gods {they can't!}. Being nice, is charity, which is love, and which we are commanded to do if we want to go to Heaven.. but it also shows integrity, which isn't present in feminism today. Be nice, if you don't like what's being said simply walk away. As for the coven of witches that play other people for a living, the majority of them are not nice to people outside the coven world.
Older woman here who spent too many years being nice. You don't have to do it. Kind, sure, but not nice. And any person who violates your personal space or makes you feel unsafe, you can take back your kindness too.
Anna Kendrick seems like she could be your BFF, she is just so down to earth and human. And I love the point you guys made about life being a different experience for women and men. It is so true and sadly some men just refuse to see it.
Woman of the hour had me on EDGE. I was literally gasping, Anna did an amazing job with her director debut and truly showing what it’s like to be a woman trying to succeed and be safe in life
Omg, when you said about going for a walk, I can relate! I was just on my morning walk and a white pickup slowed down, and pulled over ahead about a half block. I was so aware and already plotting my escape plan. As I passed it, the man had pulled over to text, ok, glad he was being safe. But I kept an eye on that truck as it drove off, and didn’t keep it out of my mind until about 5 blocks later 😢. It’s our everyday life, walks, parking areas, elevators, at home alone, I’m always aware.
I JUST finished the movie and I came to find interviews with Anna Kendrick on youtube. The part about giving the number, in the 80s, as a teen, my friends and I memorized a random number and MANY TIMES creepy guys would ask us to repeat it and we DID because we had memorized this random number! This happened maybe once a MONTH! Just remembering this, 40 years later, makes my heart beat fast! This is a creepy movie, very well made, but quite scary. I watched it alone and to be honest, had to mute some parts and only read the subtitles (sorry Anna Kendrick!) just so true and so well acted. Also yay to my old colleague David Beairstro who got a small part in the movie!
i always just took my number and reversed 2 numbers around, on the minute off chance if i ever ran into the guy again, i can say oh, you reversed 2 numbers and then had the plan to reverse 2 more numbers around, but that never happened.

Anna is one of my favorite actresses for so many reasons. I had to pause this video to go watch her movie on Netflix. You would NEVER assume a first-time director made this film. Anna, you did an incredible job, and it's chilling how deeply and poignantly this movie portrayed walking through this world as a woman. I wish it wasn't so easy to resonate with. Thank you for putting yourself out there for us, and shining a much needed light on a deeply under-estimated problem in this world.

Ana Kendrick did an AMAZING job directing this and acting in this! Honestly scary how many times this guy got let out and was allowed to keep killing. Def a story that needed to be told!

That is what got me into true crime stories and the wish to understand why would people chose to do these things and why do they happen. Crime Junkie is my first podcast ever and I am so happy to have found it, because there is so much I have learned. So much so that the lessons I learned through my own experience and the storries of others AND the CJ rules helped me help prevent a few bad situation happening in the life of some of my closest people. Because in that moment when it happens, its not just black and white for you and you need that voice of reason telling you: "No. Just NO! This is bad for you!"
Such a great interview. Cannot say how much I appreciate discussion about things like this. And such a good film as well. Cannot believe it was her directorial debut!! The movie was so well done in every way, particularly considering the sensitivity of the subject matter. The filmography felt sophisticated and beautiful, and the story felt centered in all the right ways.
Amazing movie. A woman's travels through a such a world of man landmines. From the guilt manipulation of the neighbor, the condescending men during auditions, the boyfriend not believing his girlfriend to the deadly predator. Been there.
And other WOMEN! We are so mean to one another…I have three daughters and one son…I have taught all of them to always be aware of their surroundings, listening to your gut, and taking a stand when something is wrong! Bravo, Anna Kendrick! Women should watch out for others you notice and pay attention and for heaven’s sake…say something!!! Don’t worry about reading a situation wrong! You may save a life! Be safe out there, everyone and look out for each other! ❤😢
This is a great interview. Newfound respect for Anna Kendrick--such a strong woman. So glad she fought for this movie. Thanks for having her on, Ashley!
This interview just popped into my feed the other day. Have watched it and her movie. I can't say it's my favorite movie because my anxiety was through the roof while viewing, but it is really well done. I can't wait to see what else Ms. Kendrick will be directing in the future.
Anna is such a fantastic person. Smart as hell, big heart, funny, gorgeous, just wow. She clearly dives so deep into human psychopathy, and it showed in the quality of her film.
I was in a car wreck, with my Mom. We were hit by a drunk driver and the surgeon who operated on my Mom told us about Victims of violent crimes. They ended up helping us with our some of our medical bills. That was a huge life saver because both of us were out of work for a month or more due to our injuries, which were considered minor.
So Anna, you are my ex husband's celebrity crush. But sweets, I have to admit he saw your potential since the first day he saw you!! I have so much respect for you for making this movie and even more after you said: "and screw that guy for cheating" because....UGH, he ended up cheating on me. But wow, you are one special woman!! ❤❤
I think Anna missed her calling, she could be a life coach or therapist. I got so much from the things she said about "absorbing their shame" and the things women give up, such as their sexual relationships and opinions, to remain safe from the guy at work or the neighbor next door. I did love this movie but now I love it even more! Thanks Anna!!
I was really impressed with this interview, it gave me a lot to think about in my own life and relationships. It is truly amazing how many instances in a women’s day to day life where she does have to question her decisions based on the men surrounding them, from where she parks in the morning or eating alone to disagreeing with a coworker. Minimizing our fears by being pleasing and agreeable.
After I watch this interview I am going to go watch that movie. I e seen it on Netflix, it’s even on my list, so I am going to watch it. I LOVE LOVE Anna Kendrick. She beautiful, intelligent and brave af! I’m so glad she did this movie.
I really enjoyed this interview... and I immediately went and watched "Woman of the Hour." It was REALLY good. I didn't know much about Rodney's story, so after watching the movie I went down a rabbit hole online. Thank you both so much! And Ashley, I am also a person who doesn't watch movies/TV shoes more than once. I also rarely read a book more than once. I don't enjoy knowing the ending of things. So you are not alone!
That movie was so good. ❤🎉 I love Anna's comedic performances but her directing was phenomenal. Women can't afford the luxury of second guessing themselves.
Loved listening to this! Omg, I didn't even notice 50 min went by until now?? (New listener.) I have even more appreciation for Anna Kendrick's directing choices after listening to this. I think that that first scene puts the viewer on edge right away and sets them up to feel hypervigilant for the rest of the movie, which mimics the feeling women have all the time while walking thru the world. She really understood the "show don't tell" assignment! That, plus the fact that the movie manages to have lighthearted moments, plus the non-chronological pacing of the scenes and the untidy ending that was equal parts satisfying/triumphant (bc she escaped), and heartbreaking/uneasy (bc others didn't, abd bc the survivors will still live w trauma, and bc it took years to bring him to justice!!) ... All of those choices and techniques made for a movie that was very unique, but ultimately still felt more emotionally authentic than a lot of what we see in Hollywood nowadays. Thank u for this great conversation! I will be listening to more:)
I love that you could tell this movie was made by a woman. I was scared there was going to be r*pe p*rn like most movies that linger on the lifeless bodies of women like they're beautiful or hot. It was a respectful portrayal and showed that this could happen to anybody and it really isn't your fault. These men blend in so easily and have the complicity of every other man that lets them go free or even cover up their tracks. It reminded me a little of Promising Young Women.
My daughters and I have watched all the Pitch Perfect movies no less than a dozen times each, cant believe Ashley and Rebel dont watch things more than once lol
My husband didn’t quite get the parking lot scene but he understood the psychology behind the girl at the ending. We’ve got daughters, I made him sit and watch it with me. He was happy to do so but he never would’ve chosen it himself.
I just watched five movies with Anna Kendrick starring in them back to back. I watched all the Pitch Perfect movies and in the air and then I just got through watching Mr. Wright. Man move movies were so awesome and crazy. But the one movie I didn’t necessarily enjoy that much was in the air because of the fact it didn’t have audio description and some of the parts I got a little confused about what was happening. But her acting was spot on. Hope one day she wins a Tony or Emmy or any kind of big award to show that she is an amazing actress singer and songwriter. PS I also have watched all of the troll movies multiple times.
The Netflix thumbnail was so recognizable that I skipped the show. I've seen and read enough about Rodney Alcala, and I'm kind of bored of his story. I will be watching it this evening! I love Anna Kendrick so much and after hearing the approach and that she is the director I'm sold on the idea that I need to revisit this story.
I thought the same thing when I saw the thumbnail but after watching I realized it was not real accurate but played mostly on the idea that a serial killer was on the dating game and didn't really portray even that accurately.
I love you and I love it. She made this movie and it just explains so well. What would I’m living in and have to deal with a daily and how we have to do things that are so uncomfortable and safe and scary and you’re the best out of the situation.
This is awesome! I really liked this movie and Anna did wonderful showing her fear toward this horrific murderer who was played very well by cutie Daniel Zovatto!
thank you to her for sharing so much and being so relatable its good for others to see people of her level of fame that they too go through the things just like everyday people... when she was talking about her ex it was like she was sharing my story too. and for her to make that film... the phone number scene is so important because men just do not get what women deal with and they say things like, "why dont you just say no, or give him a fake number or give your number" and its like which one of those answers will not get me killed and they scoff and gaslight us and are like oh you are being dramatic... well... no... we arent... IT HAPPENS
Anna Kendrick what a difference respecting women and the emotion of the material then Blake lively with advertising her hair products and not getting the nature of abuse in her movie and making it like a tea party! Amazing job on that movie girl of the hour! Go see it it’s a thrill ride of very realistic fear to this day
Yeah, "paranoia" is a way of denying gut instincts... Just watched her movie, "Alice, Darling" -- that's what real friends are all about and well done Anna, a subtle representation of the manipulation the main character was going through was the exact true way to play it.

I agree with Kendra on Chris Watts. He's so much like my ex. I think if I hadn't gotten out when I did, something like that could have happened to me. They've worked their whole life to be perceived as perfect and if something threatens that, it's as if their life is being threatened and they are victim.
I love that Anna donated the money she was going to make to Charities. Not wanting to cash in on a story about a Serial killer who hurt so many women says so much about her as a person.

💜💜💜
This movie was incredible. Anna did a phenomenal job both in front of & behind the camera
💯
46:37 so you saying they live in a toddler state hits the nail on the head! Ana Kendrick is the best!!!
Such a great interview. Cannot say how much I appreciate discussion about things like this. And such a good film as well. Cannot believe it was her directorial debut!! The movie was so well done in every way, particularly considering the sensitivity of the subject matter. The filmography felt sophisticated and beautiful, and the story felt centered in all the right ways.
totally agree and definitely want to see more from her!
Anna said so many things that I had to pause, back it up and write down ❤
Amazing movie.
Loved this movie on Netflix and so happy to know that Anna directed it also. So many small moments in the film gave me chills.
yes!!
I love Anna Kendrick’s voice!
If you close your eyes, you can envision poppy talking lol 🤣
Anna is such a fantastic person. Smart as hell, big heart, funny, gorgeous, just wow. She clearly dives so deep into human psychopathy, and it showed in the quality of her film.
God this was SUCH a good interview! Great guided questions that built a fluid conversation and I was hanging on every word
Petition to have Anna Kendrick direct and star in All Good People Here!! 😊😊😊
This film was fantastic. Anna needs to direct and write more films.
This movie was so chilling and amazingly shot! Love Anna and everything she’s done! I hope she directs more! ❤
She’s great and this was a very well done film for Netflix. She should keep directing and starting. Love her films
I have loved anna Kendrick since the first movie I saw her. She is a one in a million type of people. Seriously
I just watched NOELLE on Disney Plus. This movie is one I’ll watch every Christmas. Hits all emotions. Bravo!
I will watch Mr. RIGHT 193649264026402615394 times over over over again
Agreed! Watched it again only a few weeks ago 😊
Such a great movie!
Amazing job by Anna Kendrick. Beautifully filmed and emotionally portrayed. I hope she makes more movies 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I just watched this last night. So scary
This was such a great movie, kudos to Anna, her talent is endless!
I'm going to watch it tonight! Such a great interview!
thank you!
its kind of wild that its so common that survivers of DV find true crime to be some kind of empowerment, i v much relate
Anna Kendrick for President!
Ahhh I just watched Woman of the Hour yesterday and then this gets uploaded! 😍
perfect timing!

It was an amazing movie. Great performances from Anna & the rest of the cast.
That movie was so good. ❤🎉 I love Anna's comedic performances but her directing was phenomenal. Women can't afford the luxury of second guessing themselves.
Loved listening to this! Omg, I didn't even notice 50 min went by until now?? (New listener.)
I have even more appreciation for Anna Kendrick's directing choices after listening to this.
It’s as if you are telling my story. You are so spot on, it’s so similar that I feel as if finally someone else gets it!
It reminded me a little of Promising Young Women.
i just watched the movie and guys. she did a phenomenal job.
Anna Kendrick is a true gem ❤
Just watched the movie last night. It is so well done. The parking lot scene was terrifying. ❤
I totally agree with Anna on the Chris Watts case. very insightful.
I think this is brilliant. I need to see this movie. We really needed a change in movie options, and this is it for us true crime junkies lol.
I have been binge watching since I have found you on UA-cam. Fantastic show and amazing interviews. Ashley I love your laugh.
This movie was incredible, that opening scene was 🔥
What a wonderful little creature she is.
My daughters and I have watched all the Pitch Perfect movies no less than a dozen times each, cant believe Ashley and Rebel dont watch things more than once lol
The way I’ve already watched Woman of the Hour twice.
We love Anna’s work!❤👍🏼
My husband didn’t quite get the parking lot scene but he understood the psychology behind the girl at the ending.
Anna is a super hero for sure!
Omg I had no idea there was a you tube channel!!!! I listen to podcast religiously…..
I love you and I love it. She made this movie and it just explains so well. What would I’m living in and have to deal with a daily and how we have to do things that are so uncomfortable and safe and scary and you’re the best out of the situation.
This is a fantastic interview! You both are incredible! Subscribing! ❤
This is awesome! I really liked this movie and Anna did wonderful showing her fear toward this horrific murderer who was played very well by cutie Daniel Zovatto!
If my hair allowed me to wear a hat without getting hat-hair I’d take it off to Anna Kendrick. The movie is very well made. 👒
How did I not know about this show yet I listen to Crime Junkie on Spotify for years 😮
It's newer! Don't be hard on yourself ❤
@mrscoolwhipp Ah thanks so kind 🫶
Excellent interview!!
thank you to her for sharing so much and being so relatable its good for others to see people of her level of fame that they too go through the things just like everyday people... when she was talking about her ex it was like she was sharing my story too. and for her to make that film... the phone number scene is so important because men just do not get what women deal with and they say things like, "why dont you just say no, or give him a fake number or give your number" and its like which one of those answers will not get me killed and they scoff and gaslight us and are like oh you are being dramatic... well... no... we arent... IT HAPPENS
Anna Kendrick what a difference respecting women and the emotion of the material then Blake lively with advertising her hair products and not getting the nature of abuse in her movie and making it like a tea party! Amazing job on that movie girl of the hour! Go see it it’s a thrill ride of very realistic fear to this day
This 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Did *not age well*.* 😳
@trypod Anna Kendrick falls asleep to your videos my guys lol 25:36
I was giggling at that too ❤😂
The movie was well done! It scared the crap out of me.
I just watched the movie!! Fantastic!
Yeah, "paranoia" is a way of denying gut instincts... Just watched her movie, "Alice, Darling" -- that's what real friends are all about and well done Anna, a subtle representation of the manipulation the main character was going through was the exact true way to play it.
The movie was amazing!❤
I’m a1st time viewer to ur UA-cam channel and LOVED EVERY SINGLE SECOND & Who You Interviewed! THANKYOU for a GREAT SHOW!!
Listen To Your Podcast’s nearly e very night & Enjoy Them All!!
P.S. So I Now ubscribed to this channel Too!🤩🤩
My go to rewatch comfort show is Rita More o’s One Day At a Time show!!!! It’s the best!
Good movie, and yes, the parking scene was tense!
I agree with Kendra on Chris Watts. He's so much like my ex. I think if I hadn't gotten out when I did, something like that could have happened to me. They've worked their whole life to be perceived as perfect and if something threatens that, it's as if their life is being threatened and they are victim.
Anna was incredible in Up in the Air.
I absolutely love her work!!
All the OG CAMP girlies here, like, “I know you from a musical…. I wouldn’t necessarily call it lighthearted….” Fritzi forever!!!
Watched. Awesome!!
I love her!!
Whose shame is this? Important question. As evidenced by Gisele Pelicot's case this year.
