The project size, with H.264 proxies, is 867GB. Otherwise, actually editing the 8k footage is fine since you're using proxies anyway, but it was slow-going since I needed to review the results in the original files to draw conclusions.
You didn't catch a huge difference in workflow. The Canon 10bit workflow is 4:2:2, the Sony offers 4:2:0. As 4:2:2 is not natively decodable by modern AMD/ Nvidia and Intel graphics chips there is a giant workflow difference. Canon 8k is an absolute PiTA to edit while the Sony footage is just fine on a modern PC with modern hardware. No proxies needed with the Sony
@Photo Bunny Well the M1 mac lacks the power and RAM for full 8k workflow with heavy grading etc... while it can play back 4:2:2 with ease. And a powerful mac or PC can handle 8k editing but not 8k decoding. The point is with the Sony you probably don't have to buy a new PC as even older PCs handle the 8k just fine. With the Canon you have to buy a new one (which more than nullifies the price difference) and probably a PC that doesn't even exist yet. AMD/Nvidia just released a new gen without 4:2:2 decoding. So it takes at least another two years before there is a GPU with hardware decoding. Two years is a long time. At that point the R5/A1 are probably outdated again anyway
@Photo Bunny Well this is another thing. If you just edit without a grade you cannot shoot 10bit on the Canon anyway. As 10bit is only available in combination with log, which means you have to grade your footage
Bro, great video and funny, but some serious issues with ur comparison... u should have done Sony a1 vs Komodo or c70... the price to device is way off here
@@my21coronas I was mostly just listening and only occasionally glancing up, so I had it set to play in 240p, although even 144p would have sufficed. Absolutely it’s great. Especially when using different systems it takes longer to remember that muscle memory where is what. The touch screen slider just makes one less headache. Though, it seems not to like 1.2 as I shot by accident 1.4 thinking I went all the way left before auto.
Price should be 5 points lol. A large amount of features in the R5 barely come up short compared to the A1. When the R1 comes out, that will be a real competition.
I was just gonna comment on that at see if they are going to amend the video with an update with the C-log 3 updated camera. Might as well adjust the sharpness he mentioned as well. Seems only fair.
You both ROCK! Love watching your back-and-forths -- playful, and yet each of you brings both very salient and more subtle points that illustrate your knowledge of the subject matter. Thank you!
I think the real deal breaker for me comes down to redundant video recording. The fact that the Canon cannot record video to both cards makes the Sony more appealing. The next step for all camera companies would be to record two different video profiles to separate cards. Example - Shooting S-Log to one card and S-Cinetone to the other card. So you have the fast turn around material and a Log backup for more grading options if needed or in the future.
I've had Canon 70D, 80D, 2x 7DII, 5DIII and 5DIV for the past 5 years, I've had only one time when my SD card corrupt and I was able to retrieve most of the content (not all). I don't even remember the last time I used duo cards to record anything. So yeah, it's true that it's a nightmare when a card corrupt but I believe it's not something that happen every day (or every month, or for my case every year). It will be hard for me to make a buying decision purely based on it's ability to record in dual card. At the same time I respect those who base solely on card slot to make a purchase.
@@JonathanSeni If other peoples livelihood as well as your own career depend on it then it matters. If you can afford the risk then take it. I would totally shoot a camera with one card slot for certain projects but for the big stuff having the redundancy provides at the very least a little peace of mind. So far I've only had one situation where recording video to both cards saved me but it would of been disastrous if I didn't have a backup
Have been watching your videos for yrs now, Chelsea and Tony and, while I don't always agree with you, I do find your format entertaining and informative. While playing verbal volleyball with each other, I often get a smile on my face as you both keep score and rack up points, each trying to outdo the other with your respective and respectful commentary. Anyone can see, as they watch each and every video unfold, that you two are the perfect compliment to each other, even while listening to the "all in good fun", only slightly adversarial conflict brought to your subject at hand. Especially enjoy the fact that you both have embraced different paths, primarily Canon and Sony, giving us the pros and cons of each, not shy about it in either case. You have won me over.
On big productions you actually most likely to use cinema cameras and most of them have only a single card recording - Arri, Red, Sony, Blackmagic (there might be an ability to use 2 different media types at the same time but I never had to) only use one card, most of Canon C-series actually have redundant recording. But it mostly doesn’t matter because you do backups on set. Not ideal but I hope this year’s new Arri and Red cameras will have redundant recording feature.
Chelsea stole it for me Tony I'm sorry! Great video again and love your style and content. Both amazing camera's but the A1 feels pricey for what you get over the R5. Depends on what features are important to you though, two card slot recording is probably the biggest for videographers, this should definitely be changed in the next firmware update along with the record limit which makes no sense at. However with a Ninja V external recorder, both are not an issue which you can easily afford with the price difference and still have nearly $2000 change! The Ibis in the Canon is better, as is the screen functionality and the ability to flip it forward. So overall the few shortcomings of the Canon look easy to rectify for videographers, plus the 8k Raw benefit means the Sony is struggling to justify its price in my view as the stills capability is no better than on par with the Canon at best. The new R1 will probably cruise by the A1 but I suspect it will be more expensive.
It's not a matter of what's best. It's the fact that there are huge problems camera makers are actively solving. Rolling shutter is a problem. Banding is a problem. Autofocus unreliability is a problem. We're not debating luxury features like built in snapchat filters or Adobe Photoshop integrated into the camera back. They're issues preventing people from getting the shot.
That's why we have a continuous flow of comparison videos. As things get better and better, we get to see which is the best available at any particular time.
How meny people have 4 & 8k monitors, do we really need these cameras. I still shoot with a Sony A7r2, Leica Q and M6 and cant see me upgrading any time soon.

mpb camera pays more than KEH camera. mpb camera gave me $895 for my Sony a7r2. KEH offered me $700. I used the $895 to get a new a7r-3 that was on sale for $1,900. Couldn’t pass that up. Depending on what the Sony a7-4 has to offer, I’m thinking about the a1. Low light, 50 megs, color science, and autofocus system is what I want the most. Great video Tony & the lovely Chelsea.
MPB is better than KEH. we had a KEH traveling dude come in to town, and he offered 650 for an almost new a7R2. a couple of years ago. sold it a MPB for 1000 even. they're lowballers like Adorama (KEH is).
So does the Canon. Even the RP and R (with no IBIS) use gyros behihd the sensor which feed data to the lens IS to make its stabilisation even more accurate. The Canon 50mm 1.8 RF lens has "no image stabilisation" yet gets 7 stops of IBIS on the R5/R6 due to data being passed from the non-IS lens to the body. Does that mean there's a gyro in the lens, or the gyros behind the sensor are picking up the finest movements and fine tuning the IBIS? I'm not sure.
Does the a1 not have access to the usage of their Gyro Stabilization? Sony's Catalyst Browse makes it VERY usable for handheld shots, and would beat Canon in stabilization (sure it's another step, but it's pretty impressive nonetheless)
*And the point of this video was what exactly ? Both cameras have excellent images in 8K but the Canon still looks better to my eye. The Sony A1 has slightly muted colors, as ALL their color science shows this effect. As for the R5 overheat and shut down issue, well, this certainly is a lagitamate concern. (However,) Atomos allows unlimited 8K recording in ProRes RAW 8K up to 30p from the R5. What you should be testing is wether this solution allows unlimited shooting without the R5 overheat and shutdown effect ? Someone needs to test this ?*
Canon r5c can record whith 2 card on continus on same time fir 4k on sd 8k on cfexpress a1 have cfexpress a port limited to 900 mb per second canon r5c like nikon z9 have cf express b limit 1800 mb per second dont forget that is very important the capacity ti have large band in mb/s
This 8k to crop in 4k doesn't really make much sense. It is cheaper to buy 2x 4k cameras (they start below 1k) with 2 lenses and just record 2 different focal lengths. It would be even cheaper to have 3x this setup
I then did 10 tests at 4K120p and here are 2 of them. 1: Setting: 4:2:2 10bit xavc hs 4k120p 280mm Auto shutdown temperature: standard/high (twice each) 2: Sony Alpha 1 switched off for 3 hours to cool down 3: Room temperature 18 degrees Celsius, start Sony Alpha 1 4: Auto-off temperature/standard Recording time: Overheat protection flag appears at 19:21 Camera overheated and temporarily unusable at 21:50 5: Cooling continues for 3 hours. Auto shutdown temperature / high Recording time: Overheat protection flag at 20:03 Auto shutdown: high, without further recording A little better than auto shutdown: standard My friend also has a Sony Alpha 1, his room temperature: 22 degrees Celsius, same preset (settings), same cooling time, auto shutdown: standard, start to unrecordable, is 39 minutes, twice as long as my recording time, I would like to confirm if different people have the same model of Sony Alpha 1 with different overheating and different time to record 4K120?! Can you answer this for me?
In the Canon's noisy footage there's also more detail and micro-contrast and better skin-tones simultaneously. The A1's noise looks more like an artificially denoised footage that brought its drawbacks of loss of detail and mushiness. Look at Chelsea's individual hairs at 11:12 .
in the LOW LIGHT situation in the car, you didn't specify what format you were using to get low noise. I know RAW usually carries a lot of noise usually, especially with the C200 etc, so what settings did you use for that scenario?
Maybe the rate of corrupted file happening increases when recording to 2 cards at the same time....? definitely feels that way when technology tries to do multiple things at the sametime instead of just 1 thing..
Best video so far. I love the theme and simulation. As they say in Ancient Aliens, "You have to ask yourself: Were aliens involved in the production of this video?" LOL
Yeah, though a proxy isn't a backup. You give up all the raw goodness and the resolution, and if you didn't need those raw features, you definitely wouldn't be filming in that incredibly inefficient format in the first place.
Hi, I am a new Sony Alpha 1 user and I have noticed that my new Sony Alpha 1 machine has been slightly hot for three minutes while I was adjusting the menus. As I continued to adjust the menu, I felt the Sony Alpha 1 inside my hand getting noticeably hot when I adjusted it for ten minutes.
It’s normal for the camera to get warm like that while browsing the menus for a while. Change the temp to “high” and you’re good regarding any shutdown issues generally speaking. It gets warmer quicker shooting 8k. Also, if you want to shoot basically “unlimited” 8k or reduce heat get the Sony battery grip and pull the lcd away from the camera. The majority of the heat is coming from the battery and with the lcd flush on the body.
Sony a1 must be compare at canon R5C not at r5 classic because is have limit ti recorder video 30 min officicialy ( you can go more but you have almost a limit)
You guys released this the day after Canon updates the R5 firmware! Haha! Everything still applies in this video, so that's great. Absolutely enjoyed your on camera chemistry, which was fun. Oh, and can we get another "Breaking news" video with exciting music from Tony today???? PLEASE?????? :-) Be well!
R5 colours look more pleasing to my eyes and IBIS is much better, relly good I am impressed... it's usable for documentary video without need to use gimbal.
Canon R5 can Bluetooth GPS to the photo. I don’t think A1 can. Another point to R5. The memory card for cf express type a is slower. Another point to R5. The max memory capacity for cf express type a is 160 G while for type b is 512g. Another point to R5
They can both do Bluetooth GPS but I haven't found it works well enough to bother. And for the sake of 8k, SD cards work fine in the a1, so no need to use CFXA.
@@TonyAndChelsea The Bluetooth GPS connection works quite reliably with the R5, I have used quite a lot. Once you open the app and have it connect to your camera, it will sync all the gps detailed to your photos. The connection is quite strong and won’t lose it when the camera goes to sleep and wake up again. It works quite well. Chelsea should really consider using it during wildlife shooting. I use it once I tried it. It works well.
I would prefer 2x R5’s over an A1 - I am curious if Chelsea has had any videos corrupt yet - Tony said he had a few files corrupt, but they didn’t let us know if the R5 had any videos corrupt?
This was actually one of my favorite videos because it was very comical plus an objective evaluation of both cameras. One question: Tony, why are you having so many corrupt memory cards? And Chelsea, in her recent review of the Canon R5, spoke about an issue with the camera not recognizing the SD card. I’ve never experienced a problem with an XQD card with my Nikon Z7 II, nor have I had any problems with the second SD card.

mpb camera pays more than KEH camera. mpb camera gave me $895 for my Sony a7r2.
But Sony has gyro data so it wins in stabilization after all.
Tony: 8K Monitor dont exist....
Meanwhile : Grant Patty ( CEO Blackmagic Design ) : Hyperdeck Extreme 8K HDR Recorder Exists...
1: Setting: 4:2:2 10bit
xavc hs 4k120p
280mm
Auto shutdown temperature: standard/high (twice each)
2: Sony Alpha 1 switched off for 3 hours to cool down
3: Room temperature 18 degrees Celsius, start Sony Alpha 1
4: Auto-off temperature/standard
Recording time: Overheat protection flag appears at 19:21
Camera overheated and temporarily unusable at 21:50
5: Cooling continues for 3 hours.
Auto shutdown temperature / high
Recording time: Overheat protection flag at 20:03
Auto shutdown: high, without further recording
A little better than auto shutdown: standard
My friend also has a Sony Alpha 1, his room temperature: 22 degrees Celsius, same preset (settings), same cooling time, auto shutdown: standard, start to unrecordable, is 39 minutes, twice as long as my recording time, I would like to confirm if different people have the same model of Sony Alpha 1 with different overheating and different time to record 4K120?!
Can you answer this for me?
_superb stuff…and, most importantly, that authentic touch of humour!_
In the Canon's noisy footage there's also more detail and micro-contrast and better skin-tones simultaneously. The A1's noise looks more like an artificially denoised footage that brought its drawbacks of loss of detail and mushiness. Look at Chelsea's individual hairs at 11:12 .
For a moment I thought Netflix was your new sponsor.
in the LOW LIGHT situation in the car, you didn't specify what format you were using to get low noise. I know RAW usually carries a lot of noise usually, especially with the C200 etc, so what settings did you use for that scenario?
Loved the review but Omg. Adverts, adverts, adverts to the point of complete overkill but managed to persevere until the end.
Maybe the rate of corrupted file happening increases when recording to 2 cards at the same time....? definitely feels that way when technology tries to do multiple things at the sametime instead of just 1 thing..
I think you could argue 2 cards = twice the probability of ONE card corrupting, but half the chance losing a video overall.
Thank you for the video! Tony, you must be so proud of your daughter Chelsea. She´s a gifted videographer.
Love this video format
So much fun
But what about the moire in video ..? Which one is best in moire Performance.. ?
For mic is existing full mic whitout cable and whithout battery when you compare try to compare the same thing really...
wait a minute , Computer Tethering and remote control , Sony 0 , Canon 1
Best video so far. I love the theme and simulation. As they say in Ancient Aliens, "You have to ask yourself: Were aliens involved in the production of this video?" LOL
Can't you use your mobile phone to download the firmware onto an SD card and then placed SD card into your camera ?
I‘m so looking forward to the R5C vs A1 comparison.
It’s gonna be a lot closer it seems
Great comparison review! Thank you for sharing this!
9:37 A1 SLog-3 definitely has more dynamic range. Check out the shadow of the plant on the table.
And look at the highlights on the front door.
Great video, what lens did you use for Canon R5?
and what lens did you use for Sony A1?
When using RAW or RAW Light on the R5, it is possible to create a proxy which can also work as a backup.
Yeah, though a proxy isn't a backup. You give up all the raw goodness and the resolution, and if you didn't need those raw features, you definitely wouldn't be filming in that incredibly inefficient format in the first place.
That slog3 dining room shot looked much better, not sure what you guys saw?
Tony just reminded me about his .net security books from the early 2000s.
I primarily record 4K DCI at 60fps to a Ninja V+(8K@30fps is supported).
haha, 1:53... thumbs up for the Wilhelm Scream !
Chelsea: Did you put in the Wilhelm Scream again?
Tony: Ah..maybe
Me: yessss
Chelsea should have gotten more than 1 point for the price difference!
Sony a1 must be compare at canon R5C not at r5 classic because is have limit ti recorder video 30 min officicialy ( you can go more but you have almost a limit)
8k video is incredible, but is not necessary in real world use . 4k120 makes much more sense.
Very entertaining video. I love the banter between you both. Also, good comparison between cameras.
Ah here I am migrating back to back to 1080 - damn forced to shoot properly so I can't crop .
I love the unique way you all provide information! You make it very enjoyable!
Is Tony 6 foot 9 inches?
R5 colours look more pleasing to my eyes and IBIS is much better, relly good I am impressed... it's usable for documentary video without need to use gimbal.
What the heck is going on with the ads injected by UA-cam in this video? Constant looping. Never got to see the content. All ads all the time.
If the camera overheats what good does it bring. Comparison over.
dont forget, R5 Overheating!)
I didn't find a firmware update for the α1 but Sony's firmware updates for other cameras have versions available for Macs.
I would prefer 2x R5’s over an A1 - I am curious if Chelsea has had any videos corrupt yet - Tony said he had a few files corrupt, but they didn’t let us know if the R5 had any videos corrupt?
Great couple with the great informative, enjoyable comparison video between R5 and A1. Thanks...
So glad you made this vid , got my popcorn ready!!
The cano camera and lens looks huge.
How many ads did I see? The ads are painful and didn't work the first time let alone the 5th.
Excited about how the R1 is going to be.
Love you guys. Thanks for all the good info and tips. Paul
Plot twist: everything was filmed on an iPhone.
