Great video! Just an observation: most lenses are unlikely to much show chromatic aberration at f8. Shooting at f2.8 would have been a more accurate indicator of their performance in that respect.
Yeah, we also shot them wide open outside and called out issues as we saw them, but f/8 is what we'd normally shoot at in the studio. We also have very detailed, analytical reviews of every lens shown here on our channel.
It looks great at a lot of things for the sponsored and UA-cam users but we’ll see once they get into everyone’s hands. That’s when the issues start creeping out of the cracks.. but cheers to Nikon for finally releasing a competitive camera. Be interesting now that the A1 and has been out over a year what Sony’s next offering and Canons R1 have to offer..
@@gocanes9881 LOL what. The R3 smokes the Z9 in performance, and especially AF performance. Nikon still can't figure out eye AF in back lit scenes. The Z9 is still a year or so behind AF wise. Plus, no mechanic shutter was a mistake. Worse flash sync speed than the a1, lower resolution, lower FPS, worse EVF.
When it comes to portraits the camera you're using is probably one of the last things to be concerned about. Someone rocking a D3500 with a kit lens who knows what they're doing can produce better results than someone without a clue rocking any of these cameras.
You might be right, if you have only professionally compliant models, determined to patiently work with and for you + the skills to direct them. Trying to capture candid expressions of ordinary people a fast eye detection AF that works reliably is a real blessing. Sure, some great portraits were nailed without but way(!) more were missed.
I think the lens choice is more important than the camera. You can control everything in the studio so you take a lot of the camera’s job. The lens can cause distortion and other issues depending on how the lights are set up. Buy the camera you want but get good glass.
You are correct, however, if you are a professional, or amateur, portrait photographer who knows what they're doing a Z9 is going to give you better results than a D3500. I say this as someone who shot portraits for a living with a Nikon D200, this was like 3 years ago, not 15. They belonged to the company I worked for. They did the job, but on the occasions I brought my D800 to play around with between sets, the difference was extremely obvious. You don't need the best camera, but the best camera is the best for a reason.
I feel testing lenses at f8 doesnt tell us much as opposed to wide open up to f4. Even my $50 yongnuo 50mm f1.8 is super sharp, no chromatic aberration etc at f8. It's a given all of these $1800+ lenses would be flawless at f8. In fact it'd be a shame if they werent
When using flash in a studio environment I always eliminate all available light. That gives me full control over the lighting. It then comes down to the quality of your flashes and accessories. With short flash durations and fast recycling times you won’t have any issues with movement even at fairly slow flash sync speeds like 1/160th of a second. But I have to say that the Z9 is not on par with the former DSLR flagships regarding flash sync speeds.
I love the 85mm prime. Sometimes I only take that with me to see what I can get and I always get something interesting. You have to get creative when shooting landscapes etc. but that's the fun thing about it. 🙂
My A9 is still a fantastic, sharp and FAST camera. No need to spend another $4500 for 10fps and 50mp. I still use an A7RIII for high mp shots. But the A1 is PHENOMENAL! If I made money with my photography, I would probably upgrade to an A1. Maybe 2 lol
Chelsea , well I have to say, you kept it fair for the most part unlike Tony's bashing the Nikon in that firmware 2.0 debacle video. No review is perfect. Its impossible. There are many factors that come into play. As far as the Z9 eye tracking humans. The camera is excellent. Btw the 105 1.4 E lens is 2K not 1K. when you hold the 800 PF Z in your hand and shoot with it. guarantee game changer lens and camera. Rock n Roll!!! btw, when are you doing my podcast LIVE?
All of these cameras are overkill for portraiture . At this price point you really are splitting hairs when comparing performance . I would probably go with Sony due to its smaller form factor . A battery grip is available if you need it , and it has access to a range of high quality 3rd party lenses not available to the competition . Unless you have a specific use case in mind that your current system just can't handle , you would be mad to jump ship .
Not on the lens front - both the Canon and Nikon have converters to their DLSR mount system which give a far wider reach to thousands of more pieces of AF glass which are often cheaper. The little-known Tamron 35mm 1.4 on the Canon/Nikon DLSR mount is optically the best 35mm available on the market under $4k and unavailable to Sony
@@Archonsx Disagree with this - the Sony A7 IV has revised it to be one of the best, but majority of Sony cameras have the lowest amount of dynamic range in the tonal range of skin tones - go look up the video by Vistek for reference. It's why most portrait photographers don't like Sony's colour science. This stuff is not fixable with a quick edit of the RAW file, FYI
The Sony A7 II with the Sony 100mm f/2.8 STF GM OSS lens is the best portrait setup today with a mirrorless camera. It provides an electronic version of the Nikon 105mm /f.20 DC or defocus control lens. The Nikon DC lenses are not AF-S so the FTZ adapter does not provide an electonic connection for using the lens with Z cameras. I have two Z9 cameras but if for portraits or general travel photography the Sony A7 II and the 100mm STF lens are very tempting, especially with a total cost of $4,000 in total. That is far less than the cost for only a Z9, a1, or R5 camera body alone.
For portraits, any conclusion that isn't Sony a1 is just biased due to the mechanical sync speed. It's THE reason I justified getting one. That one stop of light when doing OCF outdoors is very helpful.
The R5 is a nice cheaper alternative. You can work around the sync speed. unless your shooting a lot of moving portraits and need flash for faster moving subjects, then the Sony is the one you need.
@@ytr8989 right, nothing against the cannon. The video just asked "best". Not best value for dollar. Also, you "can" work around the sync speed, but for my shooting that would be every single shoot (off camera flash and outdoors). The 400 is often not even enough tbh. An di don't like HSS. And using ND filters is annoying at best. So if I can limit that it's 100% worth it

Dear Chelsea, MUCH RESPECT!! You are one of the only (maybe the only) photo youtuber that uses the phrase " less expensive" !!!!!!! All of the other say cheap or cheaper.... NOT GOOD cheap has always meant "of low quality"... When it comes to camera equipment I do not want CHEAP !!!!!!!!!!!!
I pit my Nikon F5 with a 135 DC AIS prime or my Hasselblad 503 and 150mm up against any of these new square pixel ripoffs. All you need is a 140-250mb scan of these in say Portra 100 or Provia 100 and I can get 3x the resolution and genuine film look out of these negatives than I can from the most expensive Fuji, Leica, Canon or Nikon digital and blown up to A2 or A1 size the difference is astounding. If you must go digital, you will can't beat the LPM resolution of a good Nikon prime on a D850. And you can save thousands.
Well said, a d850 or z7/z7ii is plenty for portrait work… i have a z7ii (traded my d850) and still use my d810 for alot of shoots, i think i even prefer the files from the d810 to the later cameras… but good glass is the key, which Nikon make plenty!
Even for those who shoot film, not everyone has access to the best scanning facilities. As good as the D850 is it doesn’t have access to Nikon’s Z glass which will have higher resolving power than that of F mount. Then there’s the GFX and Phase One systems for ultimate high resolution work on digital.
I have to agree the Sony a1 is overkill but for everything else it’s great. Learned that by removing the battery door from its storage space on the battery grip you can put an AirTag there. I did it and it works very good. Try and see how you like it.
Portraits? 90% of getting good portraits is SKILL. It is 1) The photographer. 2) The light. 3) The gear (maybe). The greatest need for the greatest gear revolves largely around what your output needs to be. Do you really need more than the size of your prints @ 300dpi? The labs have such great interpolation that smaller files can be blown up to ginormous images with great detail. Megapixels only matter if the lenses can resolve to the level of the pixels. FPS? There is an old photographers' saying: "If you can't shoot good, shoot a lot". Learning to shoot only one frame at a time can teach you a lot about anticipating and timing. You want the best gear? You want spend the time sorting through 2000 images or 100? Have at it. But remember the value of your time and the cost of the digital space you need for all that. IMO for a lot of portrait shooters the amount of money that some of these cameras cost is way overkill for what you'll get out. Just sayin'. YMMV
I love my Sony A1 with the 35-150. I also have the 150-600 and a couple others. Sony a1 i think will be the top camera for a while still. I think it is so advanced that there's no need to upgrade. The af alone is far more superior and now with the new af and steady firmware update I'd say its extremely hard to beat. If your pictures are not turning out with either camera it's the photographers error. Even in most literature and real world reviews sony af among other things keep coming up on top. With unbiased reviewers ofcourse. I think the Sony is a little power house and if you need that extra grip you can put it on. You don't have to carry that extra weight especially when your hiking taking pics of wildlife and you have one of those huge lenses to capture your subjects. Plus with it's compact size it's more versatile so you can use it with most gimbals. If we're talking about serious videography that's huge plus. You dont have to spend more money for a larger gimbal plus all the add-ons you would use with a cage. This compact size would help keep the weight down which people dont realize how cumbersome these all that can be. So that compact body is perfect.The Sony a1 body alone is extremely versatile. And don't forget Sony makes sensors for most of these cameras including Nikon. So where would Nikon be without Sony tech. As for working in the dark i don't need gimmicks to get the job done. It's called muscle memory. It's not hard to memorize the buttons. Plus all the third-party lenses. Nikon to call this it's flagship i think is a huge error considering the z8 is rumored to come out.I just think people like to jump on the next new not necessarily the best thing. No loyalty imo. Although you can't go wrong with either in the end.
For portraiture (and most things in general, minus perhaps sports and wildlife), unless you're only shooting OOC JPEGs (or you need very specific functions), all of these will do just fine, plus the big three all have a good selection of portrait lenses (both native and adapted). When it comes to less demanding tasks like portraiture or landscape, the camera you have (even if it isn't one of these) is probably still a great camera for portraits or landscape. What's really going to make the difference (and doesn't cost anything) is the photographer behind the camera. That's what we should be focusing on, not the camera itself, and to an extent, not so much the lens either.
Another good video... I have to ask: how often have you changed gear, Chelsea? Seems every few videos you are talking about changing from brand X to brand Y... " Oh , brand X was my favourite, but now brand Y came out with this one new feature I can't live without...." There is no perfect camera. Doesn't exist. For the rest of us mere mortals, we pick a system and invest in glass for that system, and learn to harness everything it has to offer , working through the good bits and the bad traits.
Come on you have to include the battery grip for the A1 and then size weight will be more than a Z9. I’ve gotten so many cover shots from the WSJ to the Washington Post using Nikon pro gear I’ll stick to it my Z9 is a game changer
@@Photojouralist123 I sold my Z9 last week to switch to Sony, but as heavy as it is, it feels much better shooting vertical. Of COURSE it’ll feel unnecessarily heavily that way.
Every brand has their fanboys their brand is the best always has been always will be but we are now in a situation where they are right, all of them as all these three brands have the best camera on the market as they are all so good.
This test Makes no sense. I can get the same Sharpness and lack of CA from a old Nikkor lens. Shooting a Sony 50mm F1.2 at F8???? just get the cheap Sony 50mm F1.8
People make think this is silly but I like a little heft in my camera bodies. It feels like I’m less likely to break it and makes the camera more stable.
While I'm sure some will find this gear too expensive but love this comparison. Looking forward to the wildlife one as it's the closest to sports which is what I point my camera at a fair bit. Would also be interested in your thoughts on product photography too.

Great video! If you want a better 85mm for Sony, I would recommend to have a closer look at the Sigma 85mm 1.4 DG DN. It's smaller, lighter, more affordable, has less or almost no(!) chromatic aberrations and is sharper in the middle of the frame. The bokeh might be not quite as nice as the of the 85mm 1.4 GM, but it's really, really close. It's only issue id the distortion. But it will be fixed with the LR profile.
I'm sure it's good but looking how much better Sony mk2 glass is then I'm 99% confident that Sony will soon replace their lacklustre 85GM with a smaller much improved mk2. Only downside will be high price - poss $2k+ to start!
A nice balanced review. The Canon R glass is excellent BUT a big hit in the wallet. The body form factor of the R3 is also top notch. I'm a long time Sony mirroless user and am very happy with my A7R4, but without a body cover and over time, all the sharp edges are prone to paint rubs and they look like crap. The Z9s huge body may suit the pro's, but would kill my back!
The fact we can see that someone (Tony) uses contact-lenses, is the point that pixels, autofocus etc doesn't matter for portraits anymore (FOR ME PERSONALLY!) For wildlife however.... Honestly I've gone back to my Nikon non-AI glass for portraiture, landscape and event work because I've become disillusioned with sharpness, except for action and wildlife. That's obviously a positive! We've got so much choice nowadays for whatever works for us!
With these new camera n lenses. At this price point. They are already dang good to do the job. If 1 cant get good images. Its certainly not the gear. (Unless your gear is faulty?..) Just go with what make you happier.
Very enjoyable video. I have loved taking photos all my life and have had many cameras and camera lenses. I mostly take much more casual photos than your studio portrait ones featured in this video. I mostly like Nikon although I have had a bunch of Sony cameras. I do not think I will ever be in a position to or want to spend $2,000 + on lenses. Especially huge cumbersome ones that weight as much as fitness center weights. I switched from DSLRs to mirrorless mostly because I wanted smaller but capable cameras. There are things I still prefer about DSLRs, like buttons that go directly to functions and buttons that are in unique places so I can find them without looking. Batteries that last forever. Mechanical lenses that work better with macro for flowers. And OVF when doing macro because no delay in critical focus. But I just don't see myself going back to DSLRs because I like seeing the histogram in the viewfinder and being able to switch easily to video. I still have a 2 1/2 year old Z7 which works fine for me. I am attracted to the Z9, but likely will wait for an update on the smaller Z7 type. body so I don't have to lug around all that weight. I also have the Nikon crop sensor Z50 with several lenses and very much like that camera and get very good landscape shots with it's 50-250mm kit lens. And I adapt a 40mm 2.8 DX dslr lens and a 10-20mm DX super wide. Both of those lens work well with the mirrorless Nikon and original Nikon adapter. I also recently bought the two lightweight Nikon 40mm f2 and 28mm f2.8 which are great lenses for my use in every way. They are light, sharp, work on both my Nikon bodies, and did not cost much. The 40mm f2 is a great walk around lens. Much lighter than my 50mm f1.8. I do not see me ever buying one of the 50mm f1.2 even if they were cheep due to HUGE size and weight. Even though back in old days I had lots of 1.4 glass but it did not weight a lot or cost an arm and a leg. Actually the current Nikon 50mm 1.4 DSLR lens is light and small, does not cost much, and gives good results. Or when I had the A7iii I loved the 58mm f1.8. A beautiful light sharp lens with outstanding bokeh. I am starting to ramble now but I have been watching you guys for so long that you seem like a friend, both of you. I like Tony's nerdy stuff.
Thank you very much for the great comparison. This series is very important for me (weight / size / performance / brand) Were you on the latest FW for Z9. I ask because, I came from a Nikon D750 with a battery pack to the Z6. Initially I didn't like the Z6 because I was so used to the bigger form factor. After using the Z6 for almost 3.5 years. I have gotten used to the small/light form factor and prefer it (so much so that I bought the z 1.8 glass after selling my 1.4 f glass). Z6's autofocus is a problem for me (it has improved though). At the moment Nikon has the Z9 and that's the only camera I personally would want to upgrade to (but am hesitant to get it because of its size). I asked the latest FW question (as latest FW should improve focus stability) because if its missing focus on a static subject, then I will probably keep my z6 or start thinking about moving systems.
I have been out of the gear realm for a few years now which is odd because i basically work fulltime as a photographer vs when i sold camera gear for a camera chain store. I was unaware that the new canon 70-200 is an external zoom lens. Im torn about that. I love that its easier to carry now. I hate that its external zoom because eventually, that zoom will get loose. I have worn out the zoom on two lenses already and really would annoy me if a $2800 lens got loose too. My ef 70-200 zoom is still tight after all these years of use

Do some comparison between Mirror less and DSLR and I think this would make more sense. for Example to compare glasses. For studio photography I would not bother to switch from DSLR unless the glass makes difference like day and night
I have a question as a blind content creator, I am seeing contradicting opinions about taking portraits/selfies.., sometimes, I hear that less megapixels is better, other times you are considering cameras with a lot of megapixels. And other times, the selfie cameras of android phones are with tons of megapixels.
I know that budget isn't really a concern for you, but it since you are already mentioning it, it would be nice if you could also include the middleground - most photographers don't buy the 2000$ or the 100$ lenses, but the 400-900$ options that tamron, sigma, samyang, viltrox etc. offer. Of course you can't include all these offers, but some general recommendations or at least mentions would really increase the value of this video for most people watching it.
I’ve gone back to my F mount glass for portrait shoots on my Z9. I’m convinced there’s a degree of depolarisation with the new lenses that isn’t in the F mount glass. Thread veins and redder patches on pale skin show much more. Not quite to the degree it shows when I look at sun damaged skin though my Oakley Prizm sunglasses but similar enough to make retouching a huge pain… Have you noticed this?

She is the only one having issues with focus on the z9 of alllllll reviewer even Nikon bashers agree it works just like the other cameras and nails the eye even in motion.. Clearly they still have issues with Nikon not sure of Nikon stop sending them cameras or paying them but they have had a issues with Nikon for a min now
She’s right, the Z9 has some focusing issues. A friend of mine allowed me to use his Z9 and 100-500, but it had issues to squire initial focus on flying birds agains the sky. Several times it would focus on the sky and miss the bird (the bird was just a blur). At closer focusing using the 28-75, I still had problems with it focusing on the background, instead of my subject, the dove sitting on the fence. It does have issues.
Can't speak for other reviewers but everyone we've shot side-by-side with found the Z9's focus accuracy to be less consistent than the a1 or R5 (though it's good and definitely the best Nikon). This includes 2 lifetime Nikon shooters. I'm finding focus accuracy with wildlife to be frustrating, even though I've been shooting with it for weeks (check my Instagram).
She is not the only reviewer. Download the jpegs from Jared Polin test. You'll find that the Z9 frequently missed focus on a moving fro, where both others hit virtually all the time. Of course the results will vary and in that case I think the Nikon lens motors simply weren't fast enough.
Oh absolute bull. The only one? So Jared didn't have issues? He actually shared footage of his EVF showing it. Mark Smith also mentioned issues. The problem with you fanboys is, you hear & see what you want. That's why manufacturers get away with the shit they do. Is it impossible to get results with the Z9? No. But let's not act as if it's right up there with the A1 & R5
That's funny, in another video, the guy shows the Canon R3 doing a better job than Sony he included a live video and photos with the test not disagree with you but who do you belive right?
Another interesting video Chelsea thanks for sharing. This is all a bit ( way ) above my budget but really good to see what the flagship kit is like as we may see some of the features trickle down in the cheap seats in time.... one really minor thing, and sorry for appearing to be like a school prefect, please put your lens caps on .. it'll help keep the weather out of your lenses, or more importantly, dust off your camera sensor.
Great video, BUT: How can you discuss the R5 without taking into account THE canon lens? I use the 28-70 F2 L all the time, and my primes (except the RF 85L) are unemployed since. It is sharper and more contrasty than the 24-70 at 2.8 and performs incredibly well in low light.
You have been testing smartphones lately and I hope you get a chance to test the Sony Xperia 1 iv phone with the Sony A1 camera using their app. I have heard that the latest app is working better between the latest cameras and phones, and that there are advantages to combining them.
How would you compare these mirror-less bodies performance to that of DSLRs? Do they make your life easier or harder of course accounting for the learning curve of utilizing them.
Oh!!! I have the D850 and I was thinking to upgrade, but the heavy part... mmm. Now I don't know what to buy =( Sony or Canon I do love nikon's colors, so I don't know if that is going to be an issue when I change to the other brands!
Mine has done that. Shooting prom photos outdoor and it kept locking. Would try to shut off and turn on. Eventually I switched to my R6 to finish the shoot.
@@zacjohnson452 -Suddenly after shooting for an hour in the Blackwater Wildlife Refuge May 19, 2022, the camera began to just show the last photo taken. Punching the image review button or any other button failed to put it back in shooting mode. I turned it off and back on and it came on showing the review image of the last photo taken. It would unfreeze itself with a “clunk” after 10-15 seconds. Many R5 owners have experienced lockups.
@@altonmarsh Same for me. It's happened 3 times since the last firmware update. The quickest way I've found to fix it is power off and remove the battery not completely but just enough to break contact and push it back in and good to go. It takes 10 seconds tops to do.

Chelsea you know the Canon R5 is going to win you over with its poor battery life and few minor flaws you mentioned. However in the end it is easier to shoot with, lighter in lenses and especially compact in long lenses. Who wants to carry around a lot of backbreaking gear. Just admit the R5 is not better but just as good and it is far easier to live with on the go.
I think this would have gone even more in favor of the R5 if she threw the RF 28-70 2.0L into the mix. The sharpness and rendering at 2.0 is astonishing for a zoom, and for practical purposes for my portraits and events, I wouldn’t normally shoot any wider. Unless I’m shooting on a fixed set/studio, I leave the primes behind and go with the 28-70 for 80-90% of my shots. The 70-200 and 15-35 fight for the remaining 10-20% on my 2nd body.
Hey Chelsea! What do you use for canon RAW processing? I sold my aIII when the R5 came out and it took a long time to learn that Adobe does not do a great job with Canon RAW files. I was disappointed for a long time, especially when I purchased the 800 f11, the noise was unacceptable. Recently I started using another program for RAW conversion and then importing them into lightroom, I think I need to buy another 800 f11 now haha. I was surprised at how long it took me to realize it was adobe
We use LR Classic and yeah, the R5 raw is a real problem. Fixing it is fairly straightforward (creating a default preset) but the whole point of raw is that it should create similar colors from any camera.

i haven't seen the video yet but isn't it clear from the start that nikon has no chance when it comes to weight, lenses, AF? i don't care, i love the body of the z9 and I am switching from the a1 because of this and because of the much better nikon colors. although the a1 has the best colors of sony so far, a7IV i have never tried. with my r5 I hate that the rf lenses feels like plastic, I think it is, but great pictures and af
Are you actually buying all these cameras yourself? How much of this is just marketing? With post processing all these tiny differences evaporate. Same as the assertion that DSLRs are dead. No they are not.
Out of curiosity, when talking about Canon lenses, what was the conversation you and Tony had about using the RF 24-70 2.8 over the RF 28-70 2.0? For portraits (especially in a controlled environment) I would prefer the 2.0 over having the extra 4mm of width.
Are Canon 5Div still good in this comparison? As I wanted to switch from my Canon80D to full sensor, since I have few L lens with me for Potrait, Street and Landscape photographs, may be some video. Tracking on 5Div good enough for some animal shooting?

Great video! Just an observation: most lenses are unlikely to much show chromatic aberration at f8. Shooting at f2.8 would have been a more accurate indicator of their performance in that respect.
Yeah, we also shot them wide open outside and called out issues as we saw them, but f/8 is what we'd normally shoot at in the studio. We also have very detailed, analytical reviews of every lens shown here on our channel.
I have been a Nikon shooter since 1978 and a Hasselblad shooter since 79. That Z9 is untouchable as a sports camera.

@@gocanes9881 LOL what. The R3 smokes the Z9 in performance, and especially AF performance. Nikon still can't figure out eye AF in back lit scenes. The Z9 is still a year or so behind AF wise. Plus, no mechanic shutter was a mistake. Worse flash sync speed than the a1, lower resolution, lower FPS, worse EVF.
I have Nikon, Canon, and Sony full-frame cameras, but my favorite portrait rig is my Canon 5D classic, with a 70-200 f4L.
When it comes to portraits the camera you're using is probably one of the last things to be concerned about. Someone rocking a D3500 with a kit lens who knows what they're doing can produce better results than someone without a clue rocking any of these cameras.

You might be right, if you have only professionally compliant models, determined to patiently work with and for you + the skills to direct them. Trying to capture candid expressions of ordinary people a fast eye detection AF that works reliably is a real blessing. Sure, some great portraits were nailed without but way(!) more were missed.
I think the lens choice is more important than the camera. You can control everything in the studio so you take a lot of the camera’s job. The lens can cause distortion and other issues depending on how the lights are set up. Buy the camera you want but get good glass.
You are correct, however, if you are a professional, or amateur, portrait photographer who knows what they're doing a Z9 is going to give you better results than a D3500. I say this as someone who shot portraits for a living with a Nikon D200, this was like 3 years ago, not 15. They belonged to the company I worked for. They did the job, but on the occasions I brought my D800 to play around with between sets, the difference was extremely obvious. You don't need the best camera, but the best camera is the best for a reason.
I feel testing lenses at f8 doesnt tell us much as opposed to wide open up to f4. Even my $50 yongnuo 50mm f1.8 is super sharp, no chromatic aberration etc at f8. It's a given all of these $1800+ lenses would be flawless at f8. In fact it'd be a shame if they werent
Instead of going rf 70-200 f2.8, I have rf 70-200 f4 & rf 50 f1.2. Still in love with this combo
When using flash in a studio environment I always eliminate all available light. That gives me full control over the lighting. It then comes down to the quality of your flashes and accessories. With short flash durations and fast recycling times you won’t have any issues with movement even at fairly slow flash sync speeds like 1/160th of a second. But I have to say that the Z9 is not on par with the former DSLR flagships regarding flash sync speeds.
I love the 85mm prime. Sometimes I only take that with me to see what I can get and I always get something interesting. You have to get creative when shooting landscapes etc. but that's the fun thing about it. 🙂
Flash duration is more important to freeze subjects in studio than shutter speed.

My A9 is still a fantastic, sharp and FAST camera. No need to spend another $4500 for 10fps and 50mp. I still use an A7RIII for high mp shots. But the A1 is PHENOMENAL! If I made money with my photography, I would probably upgrade to an A1. Maybe 2 lol

There are many factors that come into play. As far as the Z9 eye tracking humans. The camera is excellent. All of these cameras are overkill for portraiture .
At this price point you really are splitting hairs when comparing performance . I would probably go with Sony due to its smaller form factor . A battery grip is available if you need it , and it has access to a range of high quality 3rd party lenses not available to the competition .
Unless you have a specific use case in mind that your current system just can't handle , you would be mad to jump ship .

Not on the lens front - both the Canon and Nikon have converters to their DLSR mount system which give a far wider reach to thousands of more pieces of AF glass which are often cheaper. The little-known Tamron 35mm 1.4 on the Canon/Nikon DLSR mount is optically the best 35mm available on the market under $4k and unavailable to Sony
@@Archonsx Disagree with this - the Sony A7 IV has revised it to be one of the best, but majority of Sony cameras have the lowest amount of dynamic range in the tonal range of skin tones - go look up the video by Vistek for reference. It's why most portrait photographers don't like Sony's colour science.

I’m still using my Canon 1Dx for sports and portraits.
The Sony A7 II with the Sony 100mm f/2.8 STF GM OSS lens is the best portrait setup today with a mirrorless camera. It provides an electronic version of the Nikon 105mm /f.20 DC or defocus control lens. The Nikon DC lenses are not AF-S so the FTZ adapter does not provide an electonic connection for using the lens with Z cameras.
I have two Z9 cameras but if for portraits or general travel photography the Sony A7 II and the 100mm STF lens are very tempting, especially with a total cost of $4,000 in total. That is far less than the cost for only a Z9, a1, or R5 camera body alone.
A video that does not make anyone think about changing system unless they are shooting with a DSLR camera, and that's how it should be 😉
For portraits, any conclusion that isn't Sony a1 is just biased due to the mechanical sync speed. It's THE reason I justified getting one. That one stop of light when doing OCF outdoors is very helpful.
The R5 is a nice cheaper alternative. You can work around the sync speed. unless your shooting a lot of moving portraits and need flash for faster moving subjects, then the Sony is the one you need.

Also, you "can" work around the sync speed, but for my shooting that would be every single shoot (off camera flash and outdoors). The 400 is often not even enough tbh. An di don't like HSS. And using ND filters is annoying at best. So if I can limit that it's 100% worth it

Why you didn't use the built in vertical grip on the Z9 is beyond me .
What's the point of that when your agenda is to make the Nikon flagship body look less than the competition.
I pit my Nikon F5 with a 135 DC AIS prime or my Hasselblad 503 and 150mm up against any of these new square pixel ripoffs. All you need is a 140-250mb scan of these in say Portra 100 or Provia 100 and I can get 3x the resolution and genuine film look out of these negatives than I can from the most expensive Fuji, Leica, Canon or Nikon digital and blown up to A2 or A1 size the difference is astounding. If you must go digital, you will can't beat the LPM resolution of a good Nikon prime on a D850. And you can save thousands.
Well said, a d850 or z7/z7ii is plenty for portrait work… i have a z7ii (traded my d850) and still use my d810 for alot of shoots, i think i even prefer the files from the d810 to the later cameras… but good glass is the key, which Nikon make plenty!
Even for those who shoot film, not everyone has access to the best scanning facilities.
As good as the D850 is it doesn’t have access to Nikon’s Z glass which will have higher resolving power than that of F mount. Then there’s the GFX and Phase One systems for ultimate high resolution work on digital.

I have to agree the Sony a1 is overkill but for everything else it’s great. Learned that by removing the battery door from its storage space on the battery grip you can put an AirTag there. I did it and it works very good. Try and see how you like it.

Portraits? 90% of getting good portraits is SKILL. It is 1) The photographer. 2) The light. 3) The gear (maybe). The greatest need for the greatest gear revolves largely around what your output needs to be. Do you really need more than the size of your prints @ 300dpi? The labs have such great interpolation that smaller files can be blown up to ginormous images with great detail. Megapixels only matter if the lenses can resolve to the level of the pixels. FPS? There is an old photographers' saying: "If you can't shoot good, shoot a lot". Learning to shoot only one frame at a time can teach you a lot about anticipating and timing. You want the best gear? You want spend the time sorting through 2000 images or 100? Have at it. But remember the value of your time and the cost of the digital space you need for all that. IMO for a lot of portrait shooters the amount of money that some of these cameras cost is way overkill for what you'll get out. Just sayin'. YMMV
I love my Sony A1 with the 35-150. I also have the 150-600 and a couple others.
Sony a1 i think will be the top camera for a while still. I think it is so advanced that there's no need to upgrade. The af alone is far more superior and now with the new af and steady firmware update I'd say its extremely hard to beat. If your pictures are not turning out with either camera it's the photographers error. Even in most literature and real world reviews sony af among other things keep coming up on top. With unbiased reviewers ofcourse. I think the Sony is a little power house and if you need that extra grip you can put it on. You don't have to carry that extra weight especially when your hiking taking pics of wildlife and you have one of those huge lenses to capture your subjects. Plus with it's compact size it's more versatile so you can use it with most gimbals. If we're talking about serious videography that's huge plus. You dont have to spend more money for a larger gimbal plus all the add-ons you would use with a cage. This compact size would help keep the weight down which people dont realize how cumbersome these all that can be. So that compact body is perfect.The Sony a1 body alone is extremely versatile. And don't forget Sony makes sensors for most of these cameras including Nikon. So where would Nikon be without Sony tech. As for working in the dark i don't need gimmicks to get the job done. It's called muscle memory. It's not hard to memorize the buttons. Plus all the third-party lenses. Nikon to call this it's flagship i think is a huge error considering the z8 is rumored to come out.I just think people like to jump on the next new not necessarily the best thing. No loyalty imo. Although you can't go wrong with either in the end.
For portraiture (and most things in general, minus perhaps sports and wildlife), unless you're only shooting OOC JPEGs (or you need very specific functions), all of these will do just fine, plus the big three all have a good selection of portrait lenses (both native and adapted). When it comes to less demanding tasks like portraiture or landscape, the camera you have (even if it isn't one of these) is probably still a great camera for portraits or landscape. What's really going to make the difference (and doesn't cost anything) is the photographer behind the camera. That's what we should be focusing on, not the camera itself, and to an extent, not so much the lens either.
Especially the "eye af", it's like no one has ever had eyes in focus before 😂😂🤣🤣🤣
Another good video... I have to ask: how often have you changed gear, Chelsea? Seems every few videos you are talking about changing from brand X to brand Y... " Oh , brand X was my favourite, but now brand Y came out with this one new feature I can't live without...." There is no perfect camera. Doesn't exist. For the rest of us mere mortals, we pick a system and invest in glass for that system, and learn to harness everything it has to offer , working through the good bits and the bad traits.
The one thing you get with the R5 that you don't with the other two is overheating issues in video. Sold my R5 and picked up the A1.
Yeah, that is still an issue! I filmed this with the a7S III because I knew I'd be filming for long segments and the R6/R5 would have overheated.
What about using the FE 135/1.8 GM on the Sony? Surprised you ignored this stellar lens perfect for Portraits. Can you explained why?

Come on you have to include the battery grip for the A1 and then size weight will be more than a Z9. I’ve gotten so many cover shots from the WSJ to the Washington Post using Nikon pro gear I’ll stick to it my Z9 is a game changer

This test Makes no sense. I can get the same Sharpness and lack of CA from a old Nikkor lens. Shooting a Sony 50mm F1.2 at F8???? just get the cheap Sony 50mm F1.8
People make think this is silly but I like a little heft in my camera bodies. It feels like I’m less likely to break it and makes the camera more stable.
To shoot portraits the a1 is clearly overkill, you can go with tha a7iii for a sixth of its price
Flash sync speed is not a concern in studio portraiture if you have a short flash duration. 125 is plenty.
in bright sunlight outdoors it makes a total difference if you can get the same result with an ad200 instead of a ad400 XD
While I'm sure some will find this gear too expensive but love this comparison. Looking forward to the wildlife one as it's the closest to sports which is what I point my camera at a fair bit. Would also be interested in your thoughts on product photography too.

Great video! If you want a better 85mm for Sony, I would recommend to have a closer look at the Sigma 85mm 1.4 DG DN. It's smaller, lighter, more affordable, has less or almost no(!) chromatic aberrations and is sharper in the middle of the frame. The bokeh might be not quite as nice as the of the 85mm 1.4 GM, but it's really, really close. It's only issue id the distortion. But it will be fixed with the LR profile.
I'm sure it's good but looking how much better Sony mk2 glass is then I'm 99% confident that Sony will soon replace their lacklustre 85GM with a smaller much improved mk2. Only downside will be high price - poss $2k+ to start!

A nice balanced review. The Canon R glass is excellent BUT a big hit in the wallet. The body form factor of the R3 is also top notch. I'm a long time Sony mirroless user and am very happy with my A7R4, but without a body cover and over time, all the sharp edges are prone to paint rubs and they look like crap. The Z9s huge body may suit the pro's, but would kill my back!

The fact we can see that someone (Tony) uses contact-lenses, is the point that pixels, autofocus etc doesn't matter for portraits anymore (FOR ME PERSONALLY!)
For wildlife however....
Honestly I've gone back to my Nikon non-AI glass for portraiture, landscape and event work because I've become disillusioned with sharpness, except for action and wildlife. That's obviously a positive! We've got so much choice nowadays for whatever works for us!
With these new camera n lenses. At this price point. They are already dang good to do the job. If 1 cant get good images. Its certainly not the gear. (Unless your gear is faulty?..)

Yes, slowly but surely over the years
Very enjoyable video. I have loved taking photos all my life and have had many cameras and camera lenses. I mostly take much more casual photos than your studio portrait ones featured in this video. I mostly like Nikon although I have had a bunch of Sony cameras. I do not think I will ever be in a position to or want to spend $2,000 + on lenses. Especially huge cumbersome ones that weight as much as fitness center weights. I switched from DSLRs to mirrorless mostly because I wanted smaller but capable cameras. There are things I still prefer about DSLRs, like buttons that go directly to functions and buttons that are in unique places so I can find them without looking. Batteries that last forever. Mechanical lenses that work better with macro for flowers. And OVF when doing macro because no delay in critical focus. But I just don't see myself going back to DSLRs because I like seeing the histogram in the viewfinder and being able to switch easily to video.
I still have a 2 1/2 year old Z7 which works fine for me. I am attracted to the Z9, but likely will wait for an update on the smaller Z7 type. body so I don't have to lug around all that weight. I also have the Nikon crop sensor Z50 with several lenses and very much like that camera and get very good landscape shots with it's 50-250mm kit lens. And I adapt a 40mm 2.8 DX dslr lens and a 10-20mm DX super wide. Both of those lens work well with the mirrorless Nikon and original Nikon adapter.
I also recently bought the two lightweight Nikon 40mm f2 and 28mm f2.8 which are great lenses for my use in every way. They are light, sharp, work on both my Nikon bodies, and did not cost much. The 40mm f2 is a great walk around lens. Much lighter than my 50mm f1.8. I do not see me ever buying one of the 50mm f1.2 even if they were cheep due to HUGE size and weight. Even though back in old days I had lots of 1.4 glass but it did not weight a lot or cost an arm and a leg. Actually the current Nikon 50mm 1.4 DSLR lens is light and small, does not cost much, and gives good results. Or when I had the A7iii I loved the 58mm f1.8. A beautiful light sharp lens with outstanding bokeh. I am starting to ramble now but I have been watching you guys for so long that you seem like a friend, both of you. I like Tony's nerdy stuff.

Were you on the latest FW for Z9.
I ask because, I came from a Nikon D750 with a battery pack to the Z6. Initially I didn't like the Z6 because I was so used to the bigger form factor. After using the Z6 for almost 3.5 years. I have gotten used to the small/light form factor and prefer it (so much so that I bought the z 1.8 glass after selling my 1.4 f glass). Z6's autofocus is a problem for me (it has improved though). At the moment Nikon has the Z9 and that's the only camera I personally would want to upgrade to (but am hesitant to get it because of its size). I asked the latest FW question (as latest FW should improve focus stability) because if its missing focus on a static subject, then I will probably keep my z6 or start thinking about moving systems.
I have been out of the gear realm for a few years now which is odd because i basically work fulltime as a photographer vs when i sold camera gear for a camera chain store. I was unaware that the new canon 70-200 is an external zoom lens. Im torn about that. I love that its easier to carry now. I hate that its external zoom because eventually, that zoom will get loose. I have worn out the zoom on two lenses already and really would annoy me if a $2800 lens got loose too. My ef 70-200 zoom is still tight after all these years of use

Do some comparison between Mirror less and DSLR and I think this would make more sense. for Example to compare glasses. For studio photography I would not bother to switch from DSLR unless the glass makes difference like day and night
I have a question as a blind content creator, I am seeing contradicting opinions about taking portraits/selfies.., sometimes, I hear that less megapixels is better, other times you are considering cameras with a lot of megapixels. And other times, the selfie cameras of android phones are with tons of megapixels.
I know that budget isn't really a concern for you, but it since you are already mentioning it, it would be nice if you could also include the middleground - most photographers don't buy the 2000$ or the 100$ lenses, but the 400-900$ options that tamron, sigma, samyang, viltrox etc. offer. Of course you can't include all these offers, but some general recommendations or at least mentions would really increase the value of this video for most people watching it.

I’ve gone back to my F mount glass for portrait shoots on my Z9. I’m convinced there’s a degree of depolarisation with the new lenses that isn’t in the F mount glass. Thread veins and redder patches on pale skin show much more. Not quite to the degree it shows when I look at sun damaged skin though my Oakley Prizm sunglasses but similar enough to make retouching a huge pain…

She is the only one having issues with focus on the z9 of alllllll reviewer even Nikon bashers agree it works just like the other cameras and nails the eye even in motion.. Clearly they still have issues with Nikon not sure of Nikon stop sending them cameras or paying them but they have had a issues with Nikon for a min now
She’s right, the Z9 has some focusing issues. A friend of mine allowed me to use his Z9 and 100-500, but it had issues to squire initial focus on flying birds agains the sky. Several times it would focus on the sky and miss the bird (the bird was just a blur). At closer focusing using the 28-75, I still had problems with it focusing on the background, instead of my subject, the dove sitting on the fence. It does have issues.
Can't speak for other reviewers but everyone we've shot side-by-side with found the Z9's focus accuracy to be less consistent than the a1 or R5 (though it's good and definitely the best Nikon). This includes 2 lifetime Nikon shooters. I'm finding focus accuracy with wildlife to be frustrating, even though I've been shooting with it for weeks (check my Instagram).
She is not the only reviewer. Download the jpegs from Jared Polin test. You'll find that the Z9 frequently missed focus on a moving fro, where both others hit virtually all the time. Of course the results will vary and in that case I think the Nikon lens motors simply weren't fast enough.
Oh absolute bull. The only one? So Jared didn't have issues? He actually shared footage of his EVF showing it. Mark Smith also mentioned issues. The problem with you fanboys is, you hear & see what you want. That's why manufacturers get away with the shit they do. Is it impossible to get results with the Z9? No. But let's not act as if it's right up there with the A1 & R5

This is all a bit ( way ) above my budget but really good to see what the flagship kit is like as we may see some of the features trickle down in the cheap seats in time.... one really minor thing, and sorry for appearing to be like a school prefect, please put your lens caps on .. it'll help keep the weather out of your lenses, or more importantly, dust off your camera sensor.
Great video, BUT: How can you discuss the R5 without taking into account THE canon lens? I use the 28-70 F2 L all the time, and my primes (except the RF 85L) are unemployed since. It is sharper and more contrasty than the 24-70 at 2.8 and performs incredibly well in low light.
Photography 101... in a studio, flash is freezing the subject, not the camera.

What do you mean locked up? Did the shutter fail?
Mine has done that. Shooting prom photos outdoor and it kept locking. Would try to shut off and turn on. Eventually I switched to my R6 to finish the shoot.
@@zacjohnson452 -Suddenly after shooting for an hour in the Blackwater Wildlife Refuge May 19, 2022, the camera began to just show the last photo taken. Punching the image review button or any other button failed to put it back in shooting mode. I turned it off and back on and it came on showing the review image of the last photo taken. It would unfreeze itself with a “clunk” after 10-15 seconds. Many R5 owners have experienced lockups.
@@altonmarsh Same for me. It's happened 3 times since the last firmware update. The quickest way I've found to fix it is power off and remove the battery not completely but just enough to break contact and push it back in and good to go. It takes 10 seconds tops to do.

Why don't you use the Camera profiles instead of Adobe ones? Ex the Camera Neutral or Camera Portrait.

Chelsea you know the Canon R5 is going to win you over with its poor battery life and few minor flaws you mentioned. However in the end it is easier to shoot with, lighter in lenses and especially compact in long lenses. Who wants to carry around a lot of backbreaking gear. Just admit the R5 is not better but just as good and it is far easier to live with on the go.
I think this would have gone even more in favor of the R5 if she threw the RF 28-70 2.0L into the mix. The sharpness and rendering at 2.0 is astonishing for a zoom, and for practical purposes for my portraits and events, I wouldn’t normally shoot any wider. Unless I’m shooting on a fixed set/studio, I leave the primes behind and go with the 28-70 for 80-90% of my shots. The 70-200 and 15-35 fight for the remaining 10-20% on my 2nd body.

Hey Chelsea! What do you use for canon RAW processing? I sold my aIII when the R5 came out and it took a long time to learn that Adobe does not do a great job with Canon RAW files. I was disappointed for a long time, especially when I purchased the 800 f11, the noise was unacceptable. Recently I started using another program for RAW conversion and then importing them into lightroom, I think I need to buy another 800 f11 now haha. I was surprised at how long it took me to realize it was adobe
We use LR Classic and yeah, the R5 raw is a real problem. Fixing it is fairly straightforward (creating a default preset) but the whole point of raw is that it should create similar colors from any camera.
@@TonyAndChelsea Awesome, I will look into creating a preset and using this as a work around until they get it together. I really missed those nice clean images I would get from my aIII and a7rII

Are you actually buying all these cameras yourself? How much of this is just marketing? With post processing all these tiny differences evaporate. Same as the assertion that DSLRs are dead. No they are not.

Out of curiosity, when talking about Canon lenses, what was the conversation you and Tony had about using the RF 24-70 2.8 over the RF 28-70 2.0? For portraits (especially in a controlled environment) I would prefer the 2.0 over having the extra 4mm of width.
The 28-70 f2 is fantastic but we do use the 24-28 range pretty constantly, and when we need shallow depth of field, we have primes.
$,$$$... the f2 28-70 is a nice piece of hardware but the price point vs the versatility makes it a genre specific lens (Studio work).

Are Canon 5Div still good in this comparison? As I wanted to switch from my Canon80D to full sensor, since I have few L lens with me for Potrait, Street and Landscape photographs, may be some video. Tracking on 5Div good enough for some animal shooting?
Yep and tracking is an aid in my opinion. Learn the skills and get the shots. Old school photographers wrote the books. 😃

Hi Chelsea. When you switched to the Canon R5, I switched from Fujifilm; my wife thanks you. Haha. Anyways, now I have an R5 and R6 and holy Trinity in RF F2.8L glass to go with it. So my wife overheard me watching your video, and she said “if you’re going to need to buy another $20k in camera gear if she switches, don’t watch the video.” LMAO
