hello all~ I keep getting comments saying the N5 vocab Anki deck download link isn't there anymore, but it is! if you go to the NihongoShark website, the link just now says "AnkiWeb's shared decks database" instead of "JLPT N5 Vocabulary Deck", then the download button is under the samples. happy studying!! 🥳🍥
Ok so I'm currently doing this on my Chromebook that also acts as a mobile phone, I'm not completely sure how to get it and I'm not good at finding things like this by myself and would love some help with it
Started learning japanese, mainly as a distraction that I am now invested in, finally finished hiragana and katakana and had no clue what the heck to do next. Absolute perfect timing to discover you honestly, you're a lifesaver!
Ahahahahahahah ‘a distraction that im now invested in’, this will be an amazing origin story 😂😂 I’m glad my video was able to help!! I know I felt a bit lost after i learned hiragana and katakana so im happy to share my perspective looking back 🥳 keep up the awesome work!!
Hey, i saw your comment and i wanted to give you some advice. Im a low intermediate in japanese and ive done maybe 80+ hours of research on how to learn a language and these are the steps you should take: 1. Learn hiragana and katakana 2. Basic grammar and 100+ vocab (from textbook or apps like duolingo) 3. Just immerse in japanese content (anime, youtube, books, music etc.) And make sure to listen actively and with 100% focus. Trust the process and you will be fluent. Also i reccomend matt vs japans channel on this. Also, anki is a waste of time in my experience. Dont learn, aquire through immersion. Good luck dude!
@@日本語-w3s I actually know matt vs japan!! Its come up in my recommended before and I was planning on checking it out. I have a friend who is fluent in japanese thats helping me with pronunciation atm. I definitely agree with your immersion learning tactic, its what I've been doing for the past few months and it's working pretty well for me!
I've recently came back to learning Japanese and honestly I've never been more motivated in my life. Your videos are hilarious, still waiting for more!
Im beyond happy to hear you’re picking up japanese again!! It’s a long, yet very rewarding journey 😙 working on the next video now!! Thanks for watching ❤️
Hey, I just started learning Japanese by myself and it took me almost 2 weeks of not-so-thorough research on how I'm supposed to start and find my materials. Your 6 minutes video summarizes and explains to new learners just like me while comforting them. Thank you for sharing your experiences and giving advice to new learners.
ahhhhh im really happy to hear your found my video concise and helpful!! 🤧 having a guide is definitely a nice comfort for understanding the road ahead. Im glad you are finding the genki books useful〜 good luck in your studies!!! 🥳
I was indebted to you after just 2 minutes. Thank you, handsome man I'm keeping a light record of my progress here, as this is the video that started it all. Hopefully it motivates someone to take the plunge. *Entry 1 - 12/11/2023* (TLDR: Finished hiragana and katakana in 17 days with JapanesePod101 videos using mostly the Kana App and a few small writing drills.) 26/10/2023 Thursday night - Hiragana start 29/10/2023 Sunday morning - Hiragana finish So a little over 3 days. I planned from the start to take a short break before katakana, as I thought this would help with confusion between the alphabets, and so I did. I reviewed little hiragana in the run up to katakana. *2 day break* 01/11/2023 Wednesday night - Katakana start 11/11/2023 Saturday night - Katakana finish So 10 days start through finish. I felt drained during the early days of this time period. Perhaps my initial flame of motivation started reducing to embers after I took a break, but I don't regret my decision. Looking back, my exercise book looks worse and lower effort now than when I started out with hiragana lol. Maybe my brain just got used to remembering stuff? I waited until finishing katakana to resume practice with hiragana. My method: Using JapanesePod101's videos, I used a pen and notepad to write the romaji and the character, then wrote character out for about 4 rows. I used 2 lines at once to make it easier. The bulk of my time I spent in the Kana app, practicing the last 20 or so characters I learned at any given time, then doing a big review later on. I used the "hard" setting for reading and writing, so I had to remember how to write each one. If I didn't know *or* got it wrong, I made sure not to accidentally mark my answer as correct out of habit (my writing score tended to be about 90%) Now I'm just over 17 days in, I've started to read Tae Kim's guide and I'm about to watch a video right this second on optimising Anki's settings for my Japanese learning. I easily found some N5 decks and imported one, so starting out shouldn't be such a hassle I hope. It's a good outlook, and the forecast is sunny with some light drizzle (Not literally) *Note - 09/04/2024* Started sentence mining I have read the Basic and Essential Grammar sections of Tae Kim's guide, and have "learnt": 700+ vocab 200+ kanji *Note - 12/04/2024* "Finished" N5 deck Reached end of N5 deck (654 cards), doing my first review on the last remaining new card in the deck. So 4.3 new cards a day on average over 153 days (starting 12/11/2023)
Really love your commitment to the habit by putting in the work each day!! Incredible that you’re already getting use to hiragana and katakana after 17 days 🥳 keep up the awesome work, good luck on your japanese language journey!! 🤧✨
@@StepRBX Same here. I found presumably the same deck in the first few results on a google search. It has audio (sound quality was meh, but better than nothing) for each word and an example sentence, and the card type is literally named after nihongoshark. I also found one with anime plastered all over it (always good), and decent audio from a site called Jlab (Japanese like a breeze), which follows the order of Tae Kim’s guide. It’s more convenient to use the recommended Anki add-on for this deck so it’s up to you. I doubt I can link them here, good luck. Unnecessary answer but I feel like it so: I’m also currently adding words I come across in my immersion to my own separate deck, along with the vocab in Tae Kim’s guide, in the most basic card format with a basic one or two word definition for most vocab. People probably stress about good cards too much I’d assume. I’m also suspending/deleting cards for words that I recognise instantly or that are obviously extremely commonly used. My current approach is to focus more on listening (me regurgitating Jlab’s approach like), so I just read the hiragana and don’t worry too much about the Kanji, but everyone works differently I guess. I could record my own audio and probably will in future but I’m lazy lol, and practicing reading hiragana can’t be that bad. I’m doing 5 new per day in the N5 deck, 8 per day in the Anime deck, and adding on average 7 per day to my deck from immersion. But of course, I’m currently suspending/deleting words I don’t expect to need to supplement the frequency of appearance of. Not too many though, since I’m still just starting to build up my vocab as a beginner. Japanese will be my second language besides English so feel free to ignore my approach and do whatever you want to do lol. And good luck everyone 💜
What's kind of funny is that I seriously used to live in Hoyoke Massachusetts, the birthplace of volleyball, and nobody cared about volleyball there at all....The city had a tiny museum near city hall that nobody went to, and that's it. In contrast, Springfield Massachusetts, the city right next door, was the birthplace of basketball, and they had the Basketball Hall of Fame, which is a massive building shaped like a basketball, and is still a popular tourist attraction today. At least Japan appreciates volleyball though 😔
I tried out the Kana app, and turns out its wonderful. I couldnt possibly imagine memorizing katakana and hiragana so fast, its blowing my mind! Thanks so much Tokuyuu!
Sorry, just watched this video for the first time or your channel for the first time. Haven’t seen any other videos yet but we just passed your anniversary and I hope you made it and everything is doing well.
ahhhh you noticed! yesss it’s been exactly two years in japan and it’s been an adventure for sure 😝 thanks so much for watching my video and leaving a lovely comment 🫶✨
@@TokuyuuTV slow and steady! Also it really did make me feel better knowing it took you seven years to become fluent. I've been studying for a month and thought I'd be waaay further but your story was a reminder that language learning is a journey and hardly a destination. I love your vids and thank you for all the knowledge and stories you share with us!
This video is so helpful! It's only 6 minutes but I understand everything, very on point. Although I just began learning, I have a goal to be able to understand japanese in 1 year (I hope I will be able to). Thank you for the video and I will definitely check your recommendations.
Im happy that everyone was easy to understand for you!! Good luck on your goal of understanding japanese! 🥳 how fast it progresses depends on how much time you put into it, but don’t forget to be patient with the results!!
My will and motivation for learning Japanese has honestly been you and your videos. You provide such good advice in such entertaining ways too. Definitely gonna start my learning process soon. I'm really thankful for everything you've done for us and I can't wait to say I was there when you were a small youtuber when you eventually become really popular.
Thank you so very much for this absolutely lovely comment 😭🤧 im beyond happy that you enjoy my videos and that they are giving you the motivation to get started! You’ve got some grade A videos here, can’t wait to see more. As someone who once got 17k subs and quit UA-cam, it’s the biggest regret of my life. Hope you’re coming back with more productions!
This is very encouraging. I've recently begun working through the Hiragana alphabet, and yes, lots of writing characters in order to memorize them and all the stuff you're saying. The Kanji Study app was an excellent recommendation in your first video -- all in all, fun to watch with solid advice. Thank you for posting this, and hope you are thriving.

Stunning video! Many thanks to the author of the channel for the recommendations! The problem with many people is that they want to take a "magic pill" or get "secret knowledge" and immediately have skills and abilities. However, the truth of life is that knowledge, skills, and abilities do not come by themselves. You can't learn a foreign language without doing anything, without wasting your time and effort, just like you can't learn to ride a bike lying on a comfy couch, listening to lectures and watching videos about "modern methods of learning" on a bike. To really learn something, you have to really practice every day. You're going to fall down while you're learning, and you're going to get bumps - that's normal! The ups and downs of learning are an integral part of our lives. Motivation from success and depression from failure will always be your study companions. However, every student has problems in his or her studies that he or she lacks the knowledge to solve. It can be: poor memorization of words; no progress in language learning; the student can speak, but does not understand speech by ear; misunderstanding of grammar; incorrect pronunciation, etc. Agree that a problem you don't know how to solve is very demotivating. In order to find the answer to our question we have to spend a lot of time to read videos, articles and books by polyglots. In today's world, we have to solve problems as quickly as possible. I don't have time to study and analyze a huge amount of information. My goal is to master the basic knowledge of a foreign language as quickly as possible and already start earning money effectively in the international arena. I settled on the practical guide by Yuriy Ivantsiv " Polyglot's Notes: practical tips for learning foreign language". This book is always in my bag. If I have a problem while learning a language, I quickly find the answer in this book. There are many different techniques and tips for learning a foreign language in Polyglot Notes. I have made my own individual schedule and plan for language learning. Now I know what I am going to study, how I am going to study, when I am going to study and what results I am going to achieve. No problem could stop me! With an effective language learning plan my professional skills are more and more in demand internationally every day. Friends, don't stop there! Everyone has talents that millions of people around the world need! Learn the language and make your ideas and dreams come true! Thanks to the author of the channel for the informative and useful video! Your videos motivate me.
really glad my video helped motivate you, and i love your positive attitude on learning languages! It’s definitely an up and down journey, but you just gotta find what works for you and keep going〜😌

FINALLY! A to-the-point video that even recommends my favorite tool for Japanese; Japanese Kanji study! And i even learned how to use Anki through it, unlike other people who say "just use it, btw you can you use this deck." _proceeds to NOT show you how the app REALLY works_
kanji study is an absolute beast of an app, glad you’ve already found it!! and really happy to hear you enjoyed my video, i try to stay as straight to the point and clear as possible 🫡
Haha nice! When I started I used the JapanesePod101 kana videos! Also sending all the prays to you on successfully getting to Japan!! 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 Safe travels!
Oh for real?? What a coincidence 😂😝 they’re really good videos right?? And thank youuuu!! Gonna need all those prays to get me through this big move 😭🙏 always nice to hear from you Owyn 🤧
If you know how, you can reach N5 fairly easily: 1. Learn Kana intensively with the Kana app so that you can read the characters 2. Learn all the vocabulary. The book 'your first 840 words in Japanese' helped me a lot. After 21 weeks, I knew all 840 words. 3. After that, you can book a few hours with a Japanese teacher and learn the rest. After less than half a year, you will have N5 and from then on everything else is much easier because you have mastered the difficult basics.
I have never commented here, first time :) Good luck in your trip bud, you deserve it! Hope you can record and upload some great content there in Japan. Thank you for the vids as always!
Thank youuu, I’m gonna need all the good luck i can get, im HELLA nervous for this move 🥵😩 and im DEF planning on making some content while over there, so stay tuned 😈 thank you for commenting 🤧
I also recommend the Human Japanese digital textbook. It's what I've been following and it does a great job at both teaching and testing me on my knowledge along the way. I have to be careful about my studying, my problem is usually trying to study too much at once and overloading my brain with too much information. I sometimes feel like I need to cram it all in at once instead of letting it click naturally over time.
Ooo ive never heard of that resource before, thanks for sharing!! And I totally get you, it’s so easy to wanna keep going when you’re in the groove 😝 but i agree! Ultimately, you gotta give your brain enough time to digest each concept thoroughly without overloading. Love your approach, keep up the awesome work!! 🥳
I've got to give the N5 a go sometime soon and see how well I do 🤔 Also great video as always! Glad to see you're finally going to be going to Japan! Good luck!
Good luck my dude!! Keep me updated on how it goes when you do take it, im rooting for ya 😙🙌 がんばって〜 Yeah im SO excited to finally be going, super nervous tho 😭😭 i appreciate the good luck, gonna need all the luck i can get to get me through this move 🥵

Just watching all your videos and was wondering if you would consider making a video about how to move from intermediate to advanced in Japanese? Suffering badly from the old language plateau 😓
Hey Anya, thank you so much for watching my videos and leaving this comment. I've always had interest in learning languages, I've been studying French for the past 3 years and I'm upset to see that I've done my finals and I don't have an excuse to learn it anymore. I thought about continuing with French but I've decided to start learning Japanese instead. About 5 years ago, I tried (failed) and gave up pretty quickly, I also consume a LOT of Japanese media - mainly things that are vocoloid related. I also would like to travel to Japan one day and not be a lost tourist. I've recently started learning Katagana and it's pretty exciting to begin recognising characters in Japanese writing. Since I knew that I wanted to take it seriously, I was thinking abojt where to start and was pretty lost so thank you for this video, it's been helpful! :D
I started learning 日本語 during winter vacations on the pandemic. I like to learn new languages, and with the years I've learnt english to the point I could have some conversations with natives in my country. With japanese, I started out as a hobby, but being a huge enjoyer of manga and anime my curiosity took over and it turned into something serious, a goal. I begun using Duolingo and quickly discovered the powers of Anki, but after some time I kinda plateaued and got bored, so I stopped. Recently I picked it up again, although in a relaxed fashion like at the beginning, because I have college and other stuff going on, but still with that long term goal of reaching some level of fluency and being able to hold normal conversations in japanese. I've been like 2 weeks in and right when I was starting to get stuck again I started wondering if relying only in Duolingo was a good way to go, so this video is a GEM to me! So, thank you so much! ありがとうごさいます〜
I feel excited! Love the energy sensei🙏 hoping you had a wonderful time in Japan, let us know soon:) and I'mma go hit that 3-4 months goal starting today! Best of luck to me ang my sister ❤️
I’m a Japanese and I’m in Canada now. I met a lot of people who want to visit to Japan. Actually though they don’t have any access to speak to Native Japanese speakers, I can see their improvement in learning Japanese so no matter which country you are in, just try to get to start study✨

It's ok. I'm still young. Let's try to do this thing. My main motive for wanting to speak this language is playing Japanese games in their original language... And I also want to finally learn a 3rd language. Sure, I'm still pretty much learning English but oh well

Hello, I just discovered your channel and I think you are awesome. Very good videos that are full of useful pieces of information. In June, I started learning Japanese and at the moment I can read and write Hiragana, I remember all Katakana but I still struggle reading it. I'll use your tips to continue studying. Keep it up!! :D
Thank you so SO much for the amazing comment, Lorenzo!! 🤧 Absolutely incredible you can read and write hiragana already and being well on your way to conquering katakana too😙 keep practicing them and you’ll get them down a lot quicker than you think! Im glad you find my videos helpful, and I wish you all the best on your japanese language journey!! 🥳 it’s a long yet incredibly rewarding road〜
I wanna share a tip that I used for Katakana: So for Katakana it took me longer to remember then Hiragana because there was so much more similar characters. I used 2 techniques to help me determine the similarities. 1: Try to pronounce the word. I noticed a lot of words I see in Katakana sound kind of like English words, so when you see a word that has one of those similar character. Now I notice this doesn't work for EVERY Katakana word but it can help you find the similarities and train your brain to find them. Let say you see the word インク and you are unsure if its pronounce as to or I so then pronounce the word the word. Inku sounds better then tonku so you can get an idea this word is most likely inku. 2: (This more helped me with a few kana for Hiragana but also helped me a bit with Katakana) Associate them to different words. This helped me a lot with ね and れ. I knew what ねこ looks like which is cat. So when I saw one of these characters I would think of cat. This helped me because as I kept seeing one these I slowly started releasing how to say them.
I've learned the kana so many times over the past decade lol. I'm hoping this time I can finally push beyond it. Thanks for your video, it's very insightful
Thank you so much for making this! By the way, just a simple question: You mentioned the example kanji 話, and how that is in words like 話す or 電話. How do you go from learning kanji to learning full verbs or compact-kanji words? (if that's the right term) Anyways, I've already binge-watched all of your content and can't wait to start learning. Keep it up! (after you're done settling in ofc)
No problem, im glad it was helpful!! 😙 When I studied kanji, I would always learn it with that key word (話す), and at the same time I would study whichever of those compound words seemed useful. In this case, I would probably learn 電話 (telephone) since it seems really common! I wouldnt focus too much on the other kanji (電) if I hadn’t learned it yet, i would just focus on the vocab! Im really flattered you watched all my content 🤧 don’t worry, im planning on keeping up the videos!! 🥳
I just started with using duo lingo I feel it has a decent way of teaching you hiragana and katakana it has built in drills for you when you don’t have a note pad available to write on
Harrison!!! Another master piece of a full video series by the hand of OUR favourite fuqingN1sempai!!! Sorry for not commenting earlier, but my computer broke and had completely forgot about it to be honest. It's great you recommended apps for each Android and iPhone users. And for the record, I can say most English Native Speaker frustration while learning hiragana and katakana could reflect in us non native English speakers learning how to properly read different words since each vowel combination can be read in so many ways that can be real creepy
Thanks for the positive comments always, Eze!! And I’m sorry to hear about your computer, that sucks 😭😭😭 and i can imagine reading english can be HELLA frustrating, the spelling doesn’t make sense like half the time 😂😂

hi
can you please suggest some advice as a beginner which you faced which are not described in the video
I was indebted to you after just 2 minutes. Thank you, handsome man
I'm keeping a light record of my progress here, as this is the video that started it all. Hopefully it motivates someone to take the plunge.
*Entry 1 - 12/11/2023*
(TLDR: Finished hiragana and katakana in 17 days with JapanesePod101 videos using mostly the Kana App and a few small writing drills.)
26/10/2023 Thursday night - Hiragana start
29/10/2023 Sunday morning - Hiragana finish
So a little over 3 days.
I planned from the start to take a short break before katakana, as I thought this would help with confusion between the alphabets, and so I did. I reviewed little hiragana in the run up to katakana.
*2 day break*
01/11/2023 Wednesday night - Katakana start
11/11/2023 Saturday night - Katakana finish
So 10 days start through finish.
If I didn't know *or* got it wrong, I made sure not to accidentally mark my answer as correct out of habit (my writing score tended to be about 90%)
Now I'm just over 17 days in, I've started to read Tae Kim's guide and I'm about to watch a video right this second on optimising Anki's settings for my Japanese learning.
I easily found some N5 decks and imported one, so starting out shouldn't be such a hassle I hope.
It's a good outlook, and the forecast is sunny with some light drizzle (Not literally)
*Note - 09/04/2024*
Started sentence mining
I have read the Basic and Essential Grammar sections of Tae Kim's guide, and have "learnt":
700+ vocab
200+ kanji
*Note - 12/04/2024*
"Finished" N5 deck
Reached end of N5 deck (654 cards), doing my first review on the last remaining new card in the deck. So 4.3 new cards a day on average over 153 days (starting 12/11/2023)
I just started learning hiragana, and I found what your wrote motivating good luck on your journey in learning Japanese.
Really love your commitment to the habit by putting in the work each day!! Incredible that you’re already getting use to hiragana and katakana after 17 days 🥳 keep up the awesome work, good luck on your japanese language journey!! 🤧✨
@@Kklosss Thank you, you too ^-^
It looks like the deck he showed in the video has been lost, are you willing to share some of the decks you found?
The haikyuu reference is so realistic💀 i wanted to learn japanese and volleyball all cz of haikyuu 🤣
you’re in good company 😂😂

If you know how, you can reach N5 fairly easily:
1. Learn Kana intensively with the Kana app so that you can read the characters

I find this video inspirational, I'm taking Languages at university and I'm trying to learn Japanese on my own because I want to go and live there
I also recommend the Human Japanese digital textbook.

@@TokuyuuTV Thanks a lot! :)
Dude your so nice that you made a hole video for 1 person that's really nice!
I wanna share a tip that I used for Katakana:
So for Katakana it took me longer to remember then Hiragana because there was so much more similar characters.
Thanks for sharing your tips in learning katakana!! Fantastic that you’ve mastered the kana - keep up the awesome work! 🥳

You mentioned the example kanji 話, and how that is in words like 話す or 電話. How do you go from learning kanji to learning full verbs or compact-kanji words? (if that's the right term)
Anyways, I've already binge-watched all of your content and can't wait to start learning. Keep it up! (after you're done settling in ofc)
No problem, im glad it was helpful!! 😙
When I studied kanji, I would always learn it with that key word (話す), and at the same time I would study whichever of those compound words seemed useful.
I just started with using duo lingo I feel it has a decent way of teaching you hiragana and katakana it has built in drills for you when you don’t have a note pad available to write on
Thank you so much i learn a lot. now i know what steps i should do next 😎 どうもありがとう! 🙏🏻
ahhh glad that you found it informative!! rooting for you! 🥳🙌
@@TokuyuuTV yeyy thank you so much ✨ あなたはかっこいい !
And I’m sorry to hear about your computer, that sucks 😭😭😭 and i can imagine reading english can be HELLA frustrating, the spelling doesn’t make sense like half the time 😂😂
I plan on setting up life in japan and i need to learn Japanese and i already know how much the grind will take, Remember men.... The grind never ends

Being native level in Mandarin is my biggest tip to learning Japanese kanji, it’s not the same, but it’s VERY similar, probably 80-90%

Ive been debating for about 1 year to invest the time in learning a new language.... When I decide to do something I tend to do it relentlessly. Ive have made the decision after watching this video (and some anime) that I will be dedicating the next 2 years to learning. 1 hour a day..... You will see my comment update in 6 months time. Thank you for this VIDEO!!!!!
i love the commitment. I also hesitate to start something new, cause when i start it, i commit to it too. Looking forward to your update post 😉

awww that’s so sweet of you! Japanese people’s faces definitely light up when you speak even just a little bit of japanese, so i think they’ll appreciate it 🤧

Awesome video . I'm confident that I can do it because I already learnt two languages TURKISH and English .I'm an URDU native speaker means I know URDU , TURKISH and ENGLISH . I started Turkish course at the beginning of this year and now I'm about to finish it and my next year's resolution will be *Learning Japanese* . Thanks for explaining how to learn Japanese.
