Thanks so much! I've been looking for a good quality video of the Bluecoats hornline and this is outstanding. Hopefully we'll get more bloo throughout the season. :^)
2 thoughts... 1) This is the best hornline channel on UA-cam period. 2) You should make a 'how to' video to show others how you get these incredible results. I think the other couple channels who attempt to videograph hornlines could benefit greatly from it. Keep it up!
William Collins 1) Thanks :) Such kind words! Though I definitely do love a lot of other people's hornline vids on YT. 2) I have thought about doing that before. However, on the videography side of things, my style is one that suits me aesthetically, but I don't necessarily have any proper sort of technique or training that qualifies me to give advice to others. It would be amateur advice at best, as I've only been using "real" cameras for about a year now. On the audio side of things, I definitely have much more experience (albeit, still amateur), though as I've told others, there may be better ways of capturing the audio. That said, I would still not rule out the idea. Could be an interesting vid to make!
Don't despair! If you already have the musicianship, on a woodwind instrument, and know what sounds good, you're half way there! m.dci.org/mobile/ViewArticle.dbml?atclid=210467005&DB_OEM_ID=33500&
I'll be waiting for the next great audio warm-ups you bring to this site. You give us the best audio/video of anybody on the Tube. I'm so impressed by the talent out there today as well as music arrangements and the dynamics of the warm-ups. You deliver the best! Many Thanks, Dan
Aw man I remember watching this video earlier in the year and it was the first taste of the Bluecoats I got for 2015. Yeah its early season but man it sounds amazing even now.
This was obviously recorded with a potato. A POTATO THAT TAKES THE MOST DARN BEAUTIFUL FOOTAGE AND AUDIO YOU'VE EVER SEEN!!!! Awesome job HornlineFanatic, hope to see Crown, Cadets, and BD soon too as well! :)
It has not let me down yet. There are some newer alternatives out there from Rode and other manufacturers... One that seems like a great possible low-cost alternative is the Tascam TM-2X. It's 1/3 the cost of the mic I'm using--and doesn't require a 9V battery like my Rode because it's powered off the camera's hot shoe. Though the catch is not all cameras have a hot shoe... Some may have the right sized mount, but it isn't "hot"... i.e., powered.
Really, the key is to have mics that are powered condensers with a relatively flat frequency response. All my 2013 vids were actually done with a Rode iXY on my iPhone 4S. It's similar to the Rode mic I'm using but actually has even a more extended bass range.
Trumpeting Ethan Thanks. I love filming them, but comments like this make it worth the effort, hours, and--as there were during this warmup--mosquitos biting me while I'm trying to hold still and focus :)
VehVeqro for a brief second i forgot that part, but once they played Pants i remembered how awesome it was...maybe they will put it back in because it made that thing so good
I played clarinet and I taught myself soprano bugle back in the day....marched in two different dci corps.....you can do it if you want it bad enough....there's lessons on UA-cam
I've seen DCI videos in the past but this one is visually crisp and the sound quality is phenomenal! I'm not sure what you shoot with, but awesome video work. I teared up during that ballad. BLOOOOOOO!
Thanks a ton! Just glad the vid captures the feel of the music and not the fact that mosquitoes were eating my arms and legs as I was trying to hold still and film :) Unless they used mosquito repellant, I doubt the hornline had it any easier. Gear used was a Canon 5DIII, a Canon Vixia HF G30 and a Rode svmp. Thanks for watching and for your comment!
He's sucking the sound right out of them....that's what I told my sis when she yelled at me to turn that down....she thought I was ignoring her and I told her I was turning it down I COULDN'T HELP IT IF THEY WERE PLAYING LOUDER! GREAT SOUND!
HornlineFanatic Nice! They sound fantastic honestly. I was thinking you have something much higher quality than that, like a pair of 414's or something.
+HornlineFanatic Do you live near Pittsburgh? I see that you posted stuff from both the Gateway and Allentown performances. Just wondering since I went to both. Also, is the public allowed to go back behind the school to watch the Coats warm up at this event? I watched them all go through a gate where it looked like the public couldn't go through. I wanted to go watch, but wasn't too sure so I just sat down and watched all of the performances.
+The Undertaker I am...somewhere on the east coast ;) As far as warmup locations, all the warmups I saw at this show were publicly accessible. They probably don't want spectators using that gate, but you probably could've gotten there by just exiting the stadium and walking extra. This particular warmup was REALLY well hidden in the parking area behind the Senior Citizen Center. I never would've found it if I hadn't found the brass staff walking to the warmup. I left a really detailed comment on my Cadets 2014 - DCI Opening Night vid about finding warmups, and the timing. The most important thing is, have your ticket with you, and ASK if you will be able to get back into the stadium. Also, sometimes you can catch a great hornline warmup if you go to their daytime rehearsals. Just depends on the day and the corps. Thanks for watching and hope you will catch some warmups next year.
Bluecoats have improved tremendously in the past couple years.. I hope they can win a championship
they should of won this year. either them or crown in my opinion but everyone has different opinions
+Flaming Chinchilla you were correct.
this aged like fine wine
That Bon Iver song is literally perfect for them and arranged so well.
Yes! The dark tone suits them well
Best DM in the last decade of DCI... and that ballad... OMG.
Cainan Cornelius Will Pitts.
Better than Will Pitts... The Bluecoats would follow this cat through a wall of fire.
lol ok.
Cainan Cornelius Will Pitts, Dean Patterson, Jacob Capenter. No way is this guy better then all three of them.
+Fluffinator 96 Did someone say DEAN PATTERSON??? YES!! Let's not forget Koji Mori!!
I miss these uniforms. :P
one of my new fav warmup vids holy crap
Mai Thanks so much. Means a lot to hear :)
Holy releases Bluecoats! ITS NOT EVEN JULY YET
that chord at 4:00 had me in an existential crisis
2:27 Possibly one of my favorite drum corps arrangements of all time.
Very nice work! Hope to see you on the road at some point.
DrumCorpsTube Thanks, and likewise!
"fair enough"
those were the most beautiful and most amazing chords I have ever heard play in a drum corp!
+Zeevillarreal ZEE perhaps "very nice?"
just when you though they was loud, they get louder... and louder
One of my favorite moments from this year 2:26-3:26
the rhythm and cord work from like 1:30 till 2:15 is beautiful
ballad brings tears to my eyes every time
Thanks so much! I've been looking for a good quality video of the Bluecoats hornline and this is outstanding. Hopefully we'll get more bloo throughout the season. :^)
Kristoffer Duque Glad I could bring these unbelievable sounds to others :) And yes, planning to get more of them throughout the summer.
Thank you for this. I always look forward to these videos since I dont have the luxury of going to all of the shows and sitting in the lot.
***** My pleasure! Thanks.
Wow they sound amazing this year, thanks for this great video quality

incredible attention to detail. Tone/intensity matching is spot on!
this is literalLy giving me CHILLS YOO!!!!....This is ****AWESOME****!!!!
'World without pants' is the best way to end a video like that. Awesome video.
Specop Killah Thanks a ton! Glad you liked it.
I dream of being in the Bluecoats. I hate that I am a woodwind player

Awesome I can't wait for your videos this year !
Jose Uribe Thanks for the support!
Bluecoats giving me the feels like no other... So emotional...
Great quality as always! Looking forward to next "fix" for my hornline addiction! Lol.
***** Thanks! :) More coming soon!
Hell yeah! :)
Super job once again capturing some awesome warm-ups. Great editing and captions. Feel like I'm standing right there! Thanks!
Dan Ericksen I never really know if something works until I get positive feedback, so thanks for the kind words.

Cody Napier Thanks! Glad to have people appreciate the vids! More coming soon!
HornlineFanatic Will you be at Massillon this year?
Aw man I remember watching this video earlier in the year and it was the first taste of the Bluecoats I got for 2015. Yeah its early season but man it sounds amazing even now.
This warmup was the true definition of a lucky catch.
The cold chills are even better.
Saw them in Drums Along the Waterfront yesterday!!! Definitely deserved a higher place. Their performance was my favorite!!
They're something special this year
Awesome!!! All of your videos are great, thanks for posting!
Thank you :)
This hornline was legendary. 2021. Stamp it .
+Hornline Fanatic Out of all the people who do stuff like this, I have to say you have the best mic
+HornlineFanatic It definitely gives a more lifelike sound to each corps. It's almost like actually being there
Really, the key is to have mics that are powered condensers with a relatively flat frequency response. All my 2013 vids were actually done with a Rode iXY on my iPhone 4S. It's similar to the Rode mic I'm using but actually has even a more extended bass range.
+HornlineFanatic Cool! Keep it up with the awesome videos
Thanks a ton and more coming soon :)
THANK YOU
Austin Espinoza My pleasure. Thanks for your comment and for watching!
My gosh. What a brassline this year!
Your videos are amazing! Thanks so much for doing them!
Trumpeting Ethan Thanks. I love filming them, but comments like this make it worth the effort, hours, and--as there were during this warmup--mosquitos biting me while I'm trying to hold still and focus :)
Ooh mosquitoes suck xD. Keep up the great work!
I am seriously in love with the Bluecoats (: Go Bloo
Kinda miss the mellophone part from last year at the end of A World Without Pants. They sound so good
VehVeqro for a brief second i forgot that part, but once they played Pants i remembered how awesome it was...maybe they will put it back in because it made that thing so good
VehVeqro Think they put it in since it was a part of their ballad from Tilt.
VehVeqro Just kidding, from their closer.
VehVeqro I think I've got some great vids of that, with [Quality Audio] of course. 2014 throwback vid coming soon.
dkeller20m VehVeqro Next best thing? ua-cam.com/video/TXPsQVNQscU/v-deo.html

***** competition seems tight this summer. I'm seeing the cadets this Sunday in jersey. Have you seen any shows yet?
***** Right, you're killing it on the west coast haha best of luck out there my man. None so far, but excited for this weekend!
He's sucking the sound right out of them....that's what I told my sis when she yelled at me to turn that down....she thought I was ignoring her and I told her I was turning it down I COULDN'T HELP IT IF THEY WERE PLAYING LOUDER! GREAT SOUND!
What is that last chord on pants? Sounds like some E minor 7th augmented major 3rd flat. For reals, it's nasty, fat, chord.
Can someone tell me what that chord at 4:01 is? That chord is nasty!
What song is being played at 1:51 ? Please and thank you!
+Damon Mclean Woods by Bon Iver. When in doubt, look it up at corpsreps.com :)
Those releases....
Subscribed!
joshdobbs23 Well thank you! There will be more very soon.
The Mello lick at 1:42 had me like Bruh
Thumbs=Amazing
Do you think he is listening to Taylor swift with those headphones...
That trumpet soloist is insane
That bon iver at 1:33 doe lol 👌
Could you upload the uncompressed audio somewhere? Like mediafire or something similar? Would be awesome! Thanks
@ 2:35 what this section called
That 60fps tho...so good! Mind if I ask what camera you're using?
Christian K Added to description!
HornlineFanatic what about mics? stereo pair of some sort
Chris Burke I use a Rode SVMP but honestly there are a ton of options including field recorders.
HornlineFanatic Nice! They sound fantastic honestly. I was thinking you have something much higher quality than that, like a pair of 414's or something.
Chris Burke We like to keep things humble here at HornlineFanatic.

HornlineFanatic Thanks for the reply! I will keep that in mind next season
yep
So why does the drum major wear headphones during the opener hit
I think Some of the music is in Bb Lydian
What’s the name of the warm up with the tubas at the beginning
2:35
So yeah, name of that last piece?
what’s the very first warmup called?
wow
Their Warm ups sounds like they are from a Movie Sound Tracks xD
WOW! Woods by Bon Iver for the first piece.
What song is the ballad?
Robby Jensen Woods by Bon Iver. Look it up it's great
Great video! I was wondering how you got access to their warm ups?
He films them himself at the competition
What’s the chorale in the beginning called and is there a transcription of it on MuseScore?
It’s called “Thumbs” though you probably figured that out by now! A similar warmup is Gino’s “Progression 14.”
