G'day Beth, My CD is in Australia & cleared Customs in Sydney Friday so I should get it this week, but although probably not in Christmas Wrap I do want to keep it wrapped until Christmas Day so I have a pressie to open 🥰🎄🎁
One thing I always love about this song, that isn't in this version of it (only versions of it I can find on UA-cam are poor quality) is the version of it that Chumbawamba sang at the 1998 Britt Awards. The lyrics "He sings the songs that remind him of the good times, he sings the songs that remind him of the best times" they changed to "New Labour sold out the dockers, just like they'll sell out the rest of us". While flying red and black flags in the background of the stage, wearing shirts with various slogans on them (lead singer wore one with "SOLD OUT" written on it as a lot of people had started calling them sell outs). This is also the event where the lead singer dumped a pail of water on the Deputy Prime Minister.
G'day Beth, TubThumping was HUGE! down here in Australia too as we also use the terms "Pissing the night Away" "Sinking Piss" & getting "Pissed" for a night down the "Pub/Club" or going to all of them on a "Pub Crawl"... & yeah no matter which Football Aussies Follow be it AFL, Soccer, League or Union Chanting "YOU'RE NEVER GONNA KEEP ME DOWN" after a loss raised the spirits for the next week.
Saw them live at V festival in Chelmsford 1999. It was the of the Essex firefighters strike. They got some on stage before sending them out with their buckets to collect from the crowd. They were a bloody good band.
The pub was pronounced The Ford Green, olde English spelling. I used to work just down from it in Harehills Leeds. I also worked a quite scary night with Alice Nutter and Dunstan Bruce from the band as part of a Theatre project. They were great people.
Is is pure late 90s childhood happy memories for me. I remember first hearing this song on FIFA Road to World Cup 98 and always associate it with the build up to the World Cup in France
Interesting to learn about how others view this song. I always thought that this was an intensely emotional song about a working man dealing with a hard life. The driving "I get knocked down, but I get up again. Ain't nobody gonna keep me down." represents him dealing with hardships and setbacks with nothing more than simple determination. His only comfort being a drink at the end of the day, and then sleeping the night away.
Beth, some other songs with a similar feel to this that you should react to: Len 'Steal my sunshine'; OMC 'How Bizarre'; Wheetus 'Teenage Dirtbag'; The Offspring 'Pretty fly for a white guy'; Katrina and the waves 'Walking on sunshine'; Fairground Attraction 'Perfect'. Hugs from Oz
It's not "I get knocked down", it's "I - Get - Knocked - Down", the first phoneme of each word (even the I ha) is HARD and enunciated on its own, and this is very contrasting to the entire rest of the song where everything flows together. It really makes the line stand out and really makes it powerful and draws you in, and that's why it's one of the best single lines to get you into a song there is.
Loved your insight into this absolute gem of a song! It actually fired me up and wanted to go out to the pub, lol! The part about the trumpets used near the end of the song was some amazing bit of insight, I could never put my finger on where I had heard it before. "Only the Brits can sing pissing the night away with such beauty..." how right you are! lol.
I love your music critics. You were my very first music reviewer. I wish I could remember who it was you shared on my first video.....However, and I sure you hear this a lot, you are not only talented and a treasure and full of musical knowledge, but you are a very attractive individual. Thank you for sharing yourself with the internet. Your videos brighten my days.
Fun Fact: Tubthumping came out when I was in high school and I was hooked, that Album is how I became a fan. Now, I say that to say this, when I was 6 just 10 years earlier my mom played the wax out of an album called "Never Mind The Ballots" and it was ok but it was way above my paygrade it was nothing like anything else she'd play it was super jarring for tiny me. Skip ahead another 10 years I finally have access to this wonderful internet machine and I find out Never Mind The Ballots, and Tubthumping are both from the same band... Mind Blown.
In Australia this song was used for promoting the Rugby League competition one year. Just the I get knocked down but I get up again, You're never gunna keep me down
If you have not done so, their farewell concert is online and well worth a watch. They got old, folky, but the fire and professionalism was still there. I hear they were well chuffed when their local football team adopted this song as an anthem!
An anthem to drinking and taking on adversity, i loved the song since its inception, I spent some time in English and Scottish pubs , it's definitely a scene, I was right up there dart in one hand pint in the other , your right Beth, a fun song , new york
I remember some MTV show (don't remember the exact name now) back when I was in college I was watching at the time and they said, "This is the song you all chose to listen to next so here is Chumbawamba, Tubthumping!!" I had never heard it before as it was a NEW release special for MTV before it really hit their rotation of music videos. I kid you not, within the next few days, it was EVERYWHERE! Radio, MTV, VH1, etc. To this day, I hear this song and think "I saw the origin of this song!!!!" And it's as cool today as it was back in 1997. Love the reaction and interesting facts!
Summer 1997, my first archaeological excavation. Lots of hard work, high heat (35C some days). Fridays were lab days and we would process the artefacts from the week. The radio was always on to make the day go faster and this song was inevitably there. We would hit the pub at the end of the week to celebrate our hard work. Good times!
It's just 11 am in the states so I'm in the middle of a watercolor and can never catch you immediately. You're arms are flying and shoulders rolling but BANG YOUR HEAD, BETH !!😅 This is huge in the states football games too, but we don't play with a ROUND ball 😮
I may be wrong but I believe the trumpet march was used as the opening theme of Masterpiece Theater was I was a kid back in the 70s. That is where I know it from.
I had to come and watch this reaction as an expat Brit. Bang on as always, I was always aware that I should hate the song but couldn't help singing along and grinning as a I sang 'Pissing the night away'.
My main memory of this when it first came out, I was driving an ambulance and between calls it came on the radio and my younger partner started to seat-dance to it. I knew my face was like "WTH?!?" LOL But it is a catchy little tune.
It's only a guess, but I think the 'don't cry for me...' reference is paying homage to all of the songs that people sing incorrectly - sing what they THOUGHT they heard, not what was actually sung. next door neighbour - Argentina, I'm feeling it.
Chumbawamba are one of the best punk bands the UK ever produced. Try some of their 'proper' songs like homophobia, give the anarchist a cigarette, whitewash, enough is enough or my fave, the day the nazi died
song great song this song was on Dawson creek. big tv show here...uk accent some u I cant understand I have irish and I have. problem under stand irish people to
i once got a train to a Chumbawamba gig in Bradford, UK, there was a nun sat opposite us, who got off at same stop and walked to the venue...., turns out it was Danbert Nobacon from the band (the bald guy with the megaphone) - realised when he appeared on stage, still dressed as a nun lol ps lead singer Dunstan Bruce has a new doco film out btw... ua-cam.com/video/QKfpcany_-8/v-deo.html
Wow superb song I like this song And i love yours madam how billie eilish and finneas created what was i made for song pls reaction the vanity fair interview
Vaya canción mucha energía varias matices en las. voces de los cantantes se me hacen muchas canciones en una facinante. porcierto que hermosa te vez con tu cabello mi H. Prrj ❤ bien Beth 👏👏🍀🍀
There was a rumor at my high school in Arizona that the guy from Chumbawumba was the singer from Crass... they don't even remotely look similar, I have no idea who came up with it or why I believed it for years 😂😂
You need to do one of the greatest songs of the 80’s - many won’t have heard off ,’ The story of the blues ‘ by the mighty Wah , again a political song but a banging song
Great video! As a US citizen, I would love to be able to have a Whisky, Vokda, and Cider drink, then stagger home to my house a few times a year. Sadly, any place that offers two of those is 40 minutes away by car. I want a Pub! Trump/Biden... give me this, not bombs!
Thanks for the background on this - interesting details. You can really hear the Prince of Denmark horns on the instrumental version. ua-cam.com/video/M6XhBne8EjI/v-deo.html

Great reaction Beth, it is nice to see you almost just react to a song for just the sheer fun of it. Please do some more like this from time to time!
It’s a shame they are only known for this song! Loved Chumba! The Anarchy Album was an absolute bloody classic!
Anarchy is one of my favorite albums of all time. "Mouthful of Shit" always gets me going!
Top of the world ? world cup 98 ? ..very well known
she's got all the things.. also well known
Pissing the night away
Sung with such elegance and beauty ! 😂

That’s amazing.
Remember buying The New Radicals and Chumbawamba CD on the same day... What a Day!!!!
Thanks for the background on the song. Love Chumbawamba. 🫶🏽
I drink a whisky drink!
I drink a cider drink!
And when I have to pee
I use the kitchen sink! 😛
Tubthumping takes me back to Uni. You're spot on about it being an absolute banger.

I'm big into classical music and I NEVER noticed the Prince of Denmark March part here before ! Thanks for pointing that out, Beth !
Interesting to learn about how others view this song. I always thought that this was an intensely emotional song about a working man dealing with a hard life. Great track and memories of my later high school years (1997-99). Such an uplifting track 😂
It is an absolute banger !
1 OF THE GREATEST 1 HIT WONDERS OF ALL-TIME!!!!
This was big in Canada, too. Brings back great memories. As a British colony, we, too, say pissing the night away.
Good for Canada-as an American,l wish my country people would use British expressions more often.
This was our fight song during basic training in the RAF. Takes me back!
The Fforde Grene was a pub in Leeds, great song, great reaction!
I can’t believe how old this song is already!❤ loved your video on this
Always loved this song. It never fails to put a smile on my face.

Wow, all these years I'd just assumed Chumbawamba was a novelty act singing a one-hit wonder. Thank you for the education!
Check out their album of English Rebel Songs from previous centuries
Bald Cactus doesn’t know chumbawamba? Is that a wind up?!
According to the US version of the TV series Ghosts, THIS song is played continuously non-stop in Hell. 😈
Hell wouldn’t have such a great song.
@@katznkittens lulz
That may seem unpleasant, yet there’s something about this song that seems heavenly.
An anthem to drinking and taking on adversity, i loved the song since its inception, I spent some time in English and Scottish pubs , it's definitely a scene, I was right up there dart in one hand pint in the other , your right Beth, a fun song , new york
That’s it! I’m watching “Trainspotting”! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
We boys from the Bronx liked this and sung it (and we thought we sounded good). I think they played it at a Yankees game.
I have not heard it in such a long time. Thank for reminding me. Some how it also makes me think about the song Ready to Go with Republica.
I remember some MTV show (don't remember the exact name now) back when I was in college I was watching at the time and they said, "This is the song you all chose to listen to next so here is Chumbawamba, Tubthumping!!" The New Radicals,Semisonic,Smashmouth they all had hits that didn't matter what you sounded like as long as you sang it loud and proud!💘💘💘
Yeah they are all really fun bands,
I love "Closing Time" as a song but hated hearing it at the Pub/Club because it meant it was 😞
Summer 1997, my first archaeological excavation. Lots of hard work, high heat (35C some days). Fridays were lab days and we would process the artefacts from the week. I always felt this song was a sequel to the far more clearly political 'Rappoport's Testament: I Never Gave Up' from the Slap! album.
Ooh (closed eyes & hand to chest) I needed a bit of sunshine in my day ❤️
Great reaction Beth.
It also brings those memories to me as an Icelander. It was very popular here
I had to come and watch this reaction as an expat Brit. Bang on as always, I was always aware that I should hate the song but couldn't help singing along and grinning as a I sang 'Pissing the night away'.
Chumbawamba were a Leeds based band, but several of the members were originally from Burnley. The Fforde Grene Pub is or was in Leeds.
Unfortunately the Fforde Grene pub has been closed down since 2007 and the building converted into a supermarket!
F in the chat for the old Fforde Grene!
Thanks! I learned so much about the song from you.
I absolutely love your insights and bits of history while reviewing amazing music ❤
I love this band so much
What a LOVELY bird !!
As a Canadian its funny as we still call this soccer yet know its football
You have beautiful hair. Enjoyed your analysis.
My main memory of this when it first came out, I was driving an ambulance and between calls it came on the radio and my younger partner started to seat-dance to it. I knew my face was like "WTH?!?" LOL But it is a catchy little tune.
I remember when this was so accurately the song for Australian NRL
Listened to this track playing early FIFA games. Appreciate the insights
I would love to see you cover a few of Chumbawamba's lesser known songs as well
Heads up Liliac Band releaded Heaven and Hell cover it Epic!!!!!!
It's only a guess, but I think the 'don't cry for me...' reference is paying homage to all of the songs that people sing incorrectly - sing what they THOUGHT they heard, not what was actually sung. next door neighbour - Argentina, I'm feeling it.
Not a Burnley accent, Dunstan is from Billingham, Teesside. Check out his current band, Interrobang, some great songs.

Well, I knew the song from Fifa 98 😅
I didn't know there was so much background to this song. I just thought it a great catchy song to play loud at parties.
Hey, my younger sister from a different mister!
Out here in the middle of nowhere, thumping a tub, as usual.:)
I enjoy this song, but my favorites from the album are Good Ship Lifestyle and Mary Mary!
Super fun
Beth Roars has an *excellent* cover of Wicked Games over on UA-cam Music.
Wow superb song
I like this song
And i love yours madam
how billie eilish and finneas created what was i made for song pls reaction the vanity fair interview
The very definition of "anthemic"!!!
Si alguien no se siente bien. Coloque está canción. De seguro le subirá el ánimo.!!!!😊😊😊😊😊😊

From Brazil 1999 😊

“I take a whiskey drink
I take a vodka drink
And when I need to pee

Homer Simpson
Slight mistake from Beth - although the band are from Burnley, the song is about a pub in Leeds, the city that kind of adopted them.
first time i leasing to this song was in the game fifa italy 90 in my Nintendo 64 🤣🤣🤣
Fifa world cup 98 anyone? This song was the intro for the playstation videogame
You need to do one of the greatest songs of the 80’s - many won’t have heard off ,’ The story of the blues ‘ by the mighty Wah , again a political song but a banging song
Still a catchy song.
But analyse manic street preachers motorcycle emptiness. Pls....
Great PARTY song,,,,💥💥💥👍🤪
This song should represent humanity on NASA's next space mission for the first contact with extraterrestrials! 👽👽👽
Classic song!! Hey Beth if you’re up for it, would you like to learn the trumpet yourself too? 😊
World Cup 1998 game song 🥰🥰
Great video! As a US citizen, I would love to be able to have a Whisky, Vokda, and Cider drink, then stagger home to my house a few times a year. Sadly, any place that offers two of those is 40 minutes away by car.
I want a Pub! Trump/Biden... give me this, not bombs!
Do yourself a favor and check out and check out their later folk stuff. This song is a pox on their storied career
When’s the last time you pissed the night away, Beth?
If you actually watch the video it's very trans supportive.
Is that
please Ummet Ozcan X Otyken Altay
Thanks for the background on this - interesting details. You can really hear the Prince of Denmark horns on the instrumental version.
ua-cam.com/video/M6XhBne8EjI/v-deo.html
It's a banger, yes, but I got sick of hearing back in the day! It was flogged to death on the radio!
my favorite peeing song
You guys might get soused and go out and get pissed. In the US that would be getting pissed and going out and getting soused.
It's funny that you don't even need to name the song. People just know this song as the band's name, the only song they are known for.
One Hit Wonder
