B52's are just such a great band. They managed to bring a funny touch in the whole underground/alternative genre that sometimes takes itself a little to serious, without being cheep or cheesy. Instead, they are very original and creative with their songwriting.
they loved the cheese to the point of kitsch, which since i believe all three male og members are gay, at least ricky wilson and fred, was like this fun new avenue in the southern US new wave punk aesthetic rip ricky wilson who died of aids early, his 4 string guitar changed how many look at the instrument, it can be a baritone and high notes at the same time
The thing that always strike's me about the B-52's is that they always seem like they are having a blast performing. That's really intoxicating. Great band!
It is "so silly." But I remember hearing it for the first time, when at a club back then, when it came to the part where everyone got down on the floor...I found myself doing the same. It's truly just a fun and silly song. When at a party, and everyone is too stiff, put this on and turn it up. Then watch and see if they unwind themselves.
I remember when this first got played on an alternative radio station. There was nothing like it and it was so captivating you wanted to know what was going on. For me it was the beginning of the "New Wave" era and had a liberating effect on music in general.
Had the privilege of seeing them live a couple of years ago and they still go this hard, most fun concert I've ever been to! Give Me Back My Man is my favourite song and an incredible showcase of Cindy's vocal talents
Such an incredible amount of fun dancing to this song when it first came out, and still today. When he says "down, down" everybody slowly dropped to the dance floor and then slowly rose again. GREAT memories!!!
Great reaction!! I know some people that hate this song - I think they're nuts (or just don't know fun) I personally love this track - it's whacky, insane fun! That groove is so infectious - I can only imagine how this played out at a nightclub or party in the early 80's! Thanks for a great start to my Friday!! ROCK LOBSTER!! Cheers.
Roam is my favorite song by The B-52’s. I also really like the colab that Kate Pierson did with REM Shiny Happy People. Would love to see your reaction to either/both of those songs.
Fun reaction. I love The B52's. I used to dance to this tune in college. When Fred is singing, "down, down, down", everyone laid on the dance floor and wiggled around. Fun times. LOL
Planet Claire is another favorite I think you'd like!! :) SO MUCH FUN!! LOVED your REACTION!! ...and, I'm WITH YA on bringing back CREATIVITY!!! At parties and on the dance floor....the part where he says "DOWN, DOWN!!!"....everyone would MELT ONTO THE FLOOR!! This PACKED the dance floors, back in the day: just because it was SO ORIGINAL and SO FUN!!
The 52"s were all about freeing your soul and letting it have fun, dancing, partying. They were the progression from the Hippy movement of the 60"s into the 70's. I will not soon forget the first time I heard the "Yellow and "Red" albums! Check out "Planet Claire, Private Idaho, 52 Girls, Dirty Back Road.
This song and most of the early B-52's is to be enjoyed with asserting reason or facts. It just is and it makes me giggle and flop and generally brings joy to my life.
Thank you Beth for a great video. It was wonderful to see one younger than this retired guy dancing , singing and noise making like we did back then. If you yourself are interested, look up The B-52's 1978, black and white, grainy as heck , you can see from that video why they were destined to be who they are. Merry Christmas
So glad you see it for what it is a funny silly song that make you laugh. A few years back I was watching a local metal band and in between songs the guitarist Stated playing that riff and the crowd went nuts . The singer had to announce they did not know the song and the guitarist played it just to fill in between songs. The boos that followed and the look the singer gave the guitarist said it all LOL
B-52s are awesome and fun. Ricky actually was self taught on guitar and he setup was bonkers but really works for holding those gooves. Kate provides the base on the keyboards. They didn't use a base guitar until years later. Singing wise I would say Give Me Back My Man is the most interesting. Cindy is incredible on it.
You mention Ricky Wilson as the bass guitarist, but he was actually both bass and lead guitar--on the same guitar. He would string his guitar with regular strings up top and bass strings at the bottom so he could pluck both simultaneously. At 5:58 you can see this clearly--two strings on top, two on bottom, with a gap between them.
It was late in my college years when the B-52s hit the national scene. We had really serious punk and punk-like and new wave bands like Elvis Costello and the Sex Pistols. We were starting to see the end of the tunnel of disco. Metal bands with big hair were hitting it big and people took them very seriously. And then the B-52s jumped in amidst all of this and made going to hear music and dancing SO FUN. We danced in apartments and dormitories and bars with huge smiles on our faces until we were exhausted. And then we danced some more and then we went home and fell asleep. So deliciously fun.
You hit it right on the head Beth. So many people try to figure out the meaning of this song.... Who Cares it's fun it enjoyable, it's awsome. They were diffrent which made them great for over 40 years plus
People have nailed it... They are such a fun band both to listen to and to watch. For this song to still be somewhat relevant today says a great deal about it. Such a great song.
I had to come back. You can see what I loved about the B-52's when I was in university in the 70's. They are the absolute silliest band and yet you look at their performance and you see their intent, control, desire to do it right, while being a great out of control party band. Controlled disorder. We loved them and were marveled by them. As a friend once said, they are so stupid and it seems to easy, but let's see you do it.
The B-52’s are one of my FAVORITE bands. Their song ‘Give Me Back My Man’ is my favorite of their songs, although I love a lot of their b-sides and Planet Claire. They were on the cutting edge of basically inventing the psychobilly genre, arguably, with The Cramps on that forefront as well. They’re fantastic.
I was only 8 when i first heard this song...I LOVE listening to this band ever...now I am 55 years old. I still and will always love this band. It is very sad to share that the already had there farewell tour three years ago, or more. i love this unique band. They were far advanced for their time in the 70's
Beth, This group & song was way after my college days BUT I'm told it was a huge number for college kids of that period. I have no problem imagining them out on the dance floor after a few strong drinks doing this down. down!!!!! Oh those care-free college years!! Rock Lobster!!!!!!! Later Beth
You absolutely get it Beth. It's silly, crazy and fun and we need more of this nowadays. People can take things too seriously. If it comes on at a party, you and I are tearing up the dance floor and doing the noises!
I had the pleasure to see them twice during the first Rock in Rio back in 1985. then many years later i saw them again during the Montreal Jazz Festival. Used to know all the lyrics.... Roam, Love Shack, Planet Claire, Private Idaho, Give me back my man, so many hits...
I always love when the second half of this track kicks in and it’s basically straight up punk rock but they play so tight and it’s funky and cool it makes you jump like no another track does.
This came out when I was in high school and was incredibly popular at all dances and get togethers. Even the older teachers loved it. BTW, when they get to the "Down, down, down" part, everyone on the dance floor had to sink until they were lying on the floor and then get back up when the music restarted, sort of like with "Time Warp" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show". Damn, I just made myself sad with all these memories that will never come again. LOL You had way too much fun with this one and I enjoyed watching you do it. Brought back good memories. 🙂
I love the B-52's such a great band, I wish more people would do their songs. The Charismatic Voice did an analysis of this too, but you're the only two.
Hello Beth While on the surface (pun intended) it is "so silly and fun". it has musical depth (pun intended again). As you described the various vocal requirements and the intrinsic 'catchiness' (pun again) of the riff, drums, and instrumentals gives the song its lasting value. Someone run into a 'rock' that turns out to be a lobster, both in the water and under the dock. The third verse is either someone in scuba gear or the lobster itself.4th and 5th verse are a depiction of the underwater world. Verse 6th (longest verse) is about back on land, the young adults are having a cookout and party on the beach, considering what the other 'under the sea creatures' that people might see there and the 'noises' they might make there. "Rock Lobster" is a fun summer beach fun song. Song with a "catchy" beat / riff to keep the party fun and interesting. Most people just like to eat, the good beat to listen, and dance to it. They don't really care about the lyrics. The majority, after many years of listening to it, probably could tell you fully what it is about.))
It's crazy, but they were so fun. Saw them many times - a 52's follower. That was the crazy times of another age. You can't kill the lobster lol. Thanks for the giggles.
I enjoy all your videos, but this one was SO fun. I know the B-52's and Rock Lobster well. So that was fun. As a young boy in Junior High school at the time, we'd request this song to be played by the DJ at every school dance. When the lead sang, "Down...down...down..." EVERYONE on the dance floor would slowly drop to the floor and then laying on our backs start kicking our legs out and flailing about wildly. It was just kids having fun to a crazy fun song.
The best goofy song ever. You need to listen to the album version as well. Definitely one of my favorites. Try "Lava" by the B-52's. It is a geologist's favorite!

Lobsters live on the sea floor, so down is where they want to be. Feel good for the lobster.
I just bought my signed copy Beth!
B52's are just such a great band. They managed to bring a funny touch in the whole underground/alternative genre that sometimes takes itself a little to serious, without being cheep or cheesy. Instead, they are very original and creative with their songwriting.
Much as I love them, they were dripping in Camembert when they did the Flintstones.
they loved the cheese to the point of kitsch, which since i believe all three male og members are gay, at least ricky wilson and fred, was like this fun new avenue in the southern US new wave punk aesthetic
rip ricky wilson who died of aids early, his 4 string guitar changed how many look at the instrument, it can be a baritone and high notes at the same time
in fact this was supposedly their first ever live performance for a group of art student friends either for halloween or nye
The thing that always strike's me about the B-52's is that they always seem like they are having a blast performing. That's really intoxicating. Great band!
They made rock music you can dance to
Welcome to the club

It's truly just a fun and silly song. When at a party, and everyone is too stiff, put this on and turn it up. Then watch and see if they unwind themselves.
Ricky Wilson "I made this silly riff" and you name will be known down the ages because of it and the sense of joy it brings. R.I.P. Ricky Wilson.
The B-52's and DEVO were 2 of the most outrageous bands of the late 70's early 80's.
they truly were the spark of new wave punk in america
And the Talking Heads.
I remember when this first got played on an alternative radio station. There was nothing like it and it was so captivating you wanted to know what was going on. For me it was the beginning of the "New Wave" era and had a liberating effect on music in general.

Great songs!
Kate's duet with Iggy Pop on "Candy" is another amazing collaboration.
Party band ! We danced so much to this in the 1980’s. Their first album was amazing. Cheers
Ive seen them a dozen times..The greatest party band ever!
So many awesome songs lately! First Sonata Arctica, then Julie Fowlis and now B-52's! Love to see them covered on this channel. 🤩
Those ladies are terrific vocalists
Ricky Wilson was just superb 🙏🏻
Back in the day, a lot of people loved the B-52's and a lot still do. They were 100% original.
This song came on, and everyone was on the dance floor dancing. It's a party song.
Audience members taking pictures with actual FILM cameras. So much fun!!
Back in the day we could sing all the parts and did. It was a party hit.
Fun reaction. I love The B52's. I used to dance to this tune in college. When Fred is singing, "down, down, down", everyone laid on the dance floor and wiggled around. Fun times. LOL

New Wave bands were very unique in their music stylings and this B-52's song always reminded me of Devo when I heard it. ✌️
We actually got them to play at our company holiday party a few (?) years ago. Very fun!
You mention Ricky Wilson as the bass guitarist, but he was actually both bass and lead guitar--on the same guitar. He would string his guitar with regular strings up top and bass strings at the bottom so he could pluck both simultaneously. Great song from a fantastic band. I do recall being a little on my own back in the late '70's liking them!
Love your reaction Beth...
Your reaction is hysterical!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One of the loveliest and nerdiest songs ever made. Great reaction Beth.
I love your reaction!!! You're right, the band put a lot of love and effort, into this wonderful work of art.
The B 52s single-handedly brought "the swim" back as a dance.
I had to come back. You can see what I loved about the B-52's when I was in university in the 70's. As a lobster, I appreciate that someone is out there advocating for more music about us.
You got it! Back in the day we just loved to get on the dance floor and enjoy the silliness of it all! Great reaction!
Lobsters live on the bottom. When the down down part come we all go down on the dance floor was so fun

One more , I Loved all the songs you have released so far, especially your lobster song.
Awesome song!! I love the B52's, one of my favorite bands from college. Great reaction to such a fun song!!😊👏🎶
That is actually my favorite song ever and it's the first song in my party mood playlist because it always manage to lift my mood
The best part is how serious they stay throughout this entire performance. It makes me laugh and enjoy this performance even more.

Andy and Alex did it a few months ago.

@@Adam_Le-Roi_Davis. You're welcome! I was pleasantly surprised at how much they liked it.
A gift from the 80's. ✌
1978. As much as I love 80s music, the 70's gets to claim this gem.
This is very playful and likely my 2nd favorite B-52s song.. I'ts awesome!
B-52's are the perfect backyard barbecue band.
Glad u had Fun making those noises! B-52's are a very unique & crazy-type band which provides much enjoyment over the years!!
Wish I could like this 10000000 times. Love this reaction.
Yes, this is the sort of music your grandma used to listen to.
Hello Beth

I really enjoyed your reaction and just having fun with the song and the sounds. Roar!!!!
CLASSIC! ICONIC! EPIC! what a riff at the end! I love the song "private Idaho" but they have many bangers and fun songs!
It's crazy, but they were so fun. Saw them many times - a 52's follower. That was the crazy times of another age. You can't kill the lobster lol. Thanks for the giggles.
When you grabbed the lobster claw and started dancing! 😂😂😂😂😂 this woman is the definition of cuteness.
The ultimate dance party song!
Fun and music. Happy now. Love this song.
I enjoy all your videos, but this one was SO fun.
I know the B-52's and Rock Lobster well. So that was fun.
But seeing and hearing a vocalist of your pedigree trying to make all the sounds was pure joy! HA! Your love of music and vocal skill is obvious- maybe here more than ever before on this channel. YAY!
This one was a staple at pretty much every Gen-X wedding I've been to. Such fun! Your reaction was hilarious to watch. I loved hearing you try to mimic the sounds of all the sea life. Maybe that last 30 seconds would make a good ring tone?
One of the best bands ever. Geniuses.
This song also came out at the time that Punk was getting big. This punk song had a groove that could get people on the dancefloor even if we were only jumping up and down
This song feels like a trip to a beach in Florida to me 🥰🏖🦞
they played the music as they felt it at the time, and I would say it turned out very interesting and original.
Big Head Todd And The Monsters - Broken Hearted Savior
😇❤
Love the B 52s... Also love Love shack... Back in the day the crowd would go wild in the club when these played... A newer silly song you should check out is Bear Shark by Pixie and the partygrass boys...
They had that wobble down like nobody. They owned it.
The B-52s opened for DEVO when I saw them in Seattle back in 1982. That was my very first concert ever and i eventually married the girl I went with!
I remember when this was released. It was one of the most played songs in the jukebox at the campground recreation hall that summer. Ah, memories of "Rock Lobster!!" while playing pinball. Good times!
love your smile and dance!
Saw them in Central Park NYC for Earth Day ...1989 I think....they were amazing....
Love it!!!
And I think "Down, down" referred to the diver whose air hose broke.....

The best goofy song ever. You need to listen to the album version as well. Definitely one of my favorites. Try "Lava" by the B-52's. It is a geologist's favorite!
This, and Planet Claire, are my favorite B-52's tunes. They certainly were unique.

maravilloso análisis, felicitaciones

Parrot Records. Now there's some memories...
Haha loved how you tried to do the noises Beth
