@@mikesbookreviews A lot of it boils down to how much compassion you as a reader have for the protagonist. Life dealt him the shittiest hand imaginable, but he still made some bad choices of his own volition. There's a beauty to this work that contrasts powerfully with the despoiling of that beauty. Without going into any plot details, it's a classic work for a reason. This first trilogy probably won't eat up too much of your time either, the books are modestly sized.

Both «The Warrior Prophet» and «The Thousandfold Thought» are great (if very, very dark😅) reads and on my Top Ten Reads this year! I am also very excited to get to «The Fury of the Gods» this November, and I am looking forward to hear your thoughts on «The Devils»! 😃
    My November TBR:
«The Fury of the Gods» (Bloodsworn Saga #3) by John Gwynne (Epic Fantasy inspired by Norse Mythology)
    «The Steel Tsar» (A Nomad of the Time Streams» Trilogy #3) by Michael Moorcock (Multiverse/Alternative History/Time Travel Steampunk(?)😅)
«Dreaming the Eagle» («Boudica» #1) by Manda Scott (Historical Fiction about the Celtic British Queen and her Rebellion against the Romans)
«Lord of Light» by Roger Zelazny (Science Fantasy inspired by the Hindu Gods and the Legend of Siddhartha Gautama/the Buddha)
«The Wall» (City of Victory Trilogy #3) by Adrian Goldsworthy (Historical Military Fiction set during the building of Hadrian’s Wall)
«The Power Broker» by Robert Caro (Political Biography/Investigative Journalism Classic, my Q4 long-read)
    Cheers Mike!

So good to hear you schdeuling Bakker more tightly now! Cant wait for these thoughts as the series goes on!
I feel like the dropout rate is probably the highest after the first book - as that is kind of an easy measuring-point for most people. Both in terms of brutality and depravity of the world as well as the style of worldbuilding, writing and narration by Bakker.
The other spot where some stop after that is only after book 3 for obvious reasons, after that I'm not sure tbh... But these seem to be the filtering points; unlike Malazan for example, Second Apocalypse in the end has the advantage of being shorter as individual books and as a series/sub-series.
For my own November, I'm gonna probably carry over Bakker's 'Great Ordeal' from this month and then looking for a replacement for 'Realm of the Elderlings', which I'll finally complete in a couple of days :')
Oh, also the next 'Dungeon Crawler Carl' book releases - and that one is an instant buy. Rearranging everything for this series as is has taken up my life haha; unbelievable how unironically incredible this series is.
Abd apart from that I'll try and get some Audiobooks done while I'm workijg on my Uni Project - probably some Discworld or later Dune books... Or I'll join in on continuing Kingsbridge, who knows :)

Like Ordinary Grace being coming of age and youve said before you love that sub-genre, I expected it would be your favorite for the month. But with these 4, I think any of them could be your book of the month. All 4 couldn't be contenders for book of the year but I'm going to predict that 1 of them my be slightly disappointing. They're all sequels to books you've loved so expectations can't help but be high.
