Well done. If you want to go pro on this, get yourself a cleaning bucket that is circulated. This will remove all the mud from the crawfish. Then add them to the boiled salt water. Ya'll ate well but you ate dirty and didn't know it. Then again, you're up in Canada and the water is far cleaner than down in Louisiana.
I mentioned in another reply that I leave them in minnow buckets hanging off my dock for a day or two, and they clean out nicely. But I still purge them inna big bucket with salt (Google it), and boil them extra to kill the Giardia. And BTW fish carcasses are the BEST bait.
Save your lake……eat rusty crayfish!

What was the longest , biggest size you guys caught?
There are lots of Rusty Crayfish in my area that I catch. They are aggressive and taste superb when properly cooked!
Over the years I discovered that using 16 - and 18 inch long stainless steel Food Tongs are a very effective implement to use to catch individual Crayfish.
The long stainless steel Food Tongs also act as an effective Personal Protecive Safety Device against dangerous animals like SnappingTurtles, Minks, Racoons etc. As well as safely picking up dangerous Broken Glass Bottles, which can be encountered in Brooks and Streams .
I found that the well designed and made Crayster Snake River Trap to be very effective at catching lots of numbers of big crayfish.

Lakefront property at last mountain lake my whole life, as a kid walked down to the water with bbq tongs, flashlight and ice cream pail in the dark, got chewed by mosquitos for hours but came back to the cabin with Pail full of crayfish begged dad to wake up and cook em up for us, amazing memories! ❤️

Jay, great video as always! As the cooler weather moves in, can you discuss how you maintain your motor/boat in freezing weather? I'd like to head north in October but always worry about my engine freezing up. Ex, northern/southern Manitoba walleye tour from last year. Any info would be nice as I'd love to get up to northwest ontario for an October bite!

I always thought that you should do a salt water soak in a bucket rinse and repeat until the water is clear , to remove any junk from the crayfish before cooking? But I am assuming that the boiling water does the same thing . Thanks for the video keep up the great work

I like to just cook. I have a hard time catching so the catch and clean usually is done at my local fish market for me
Easiest things to catch - buy a Frabill trap for like 10 bucks, throw in some fish carcasses, hang off your dock (touching bottom) overnight. They like gravel/sand/rock bottom, muck bottom not as productive.
The only thing this video lacked is a band with an accordion in it and a bunch of Cajuns. LOL
Was really hoping this video was going to be KBI 2021 but this is pretty sweet, will definitely be trying this

Love this one, Jay! Our family does a crayfish boil every year on LOTW. It can be a lot of work for the small pieces of meat, but it is SO worth the effort. Thanks for switching things up and keeping it interesting.

Love the video ! If you want the big ones only go out at night with a headlamp and walk along the shore. They are out in mass numbers at night making it easy picking . We would get hundred a night of the large size craws in temagami region. Your batter would be some killer on bull frog legs :p

Makes no sense. In MN it is 25lbs limit, and even that is silly. I can catch that overnight off my docks! Think about “purging” them with salt to empty their poop chute, but I find leaving them unfed in a minnow bucket off the dock for a day or so cleans them out. I boil them hard 12-15 minutes to make sure you kill the Giardia. Made that undercooking mistake only once, never again. Claws are worth cracking open. Good video!
They impose silly limits like this to keep themselves to stay relevant and impose their authority over you.
Invasive or not, completely decimating a species can be harmful to the ecosystem
@@tyfaichney3165 Ty, maybe you haven’t really experienced them. In my 40,000 acre MN lake (and throughout MN, WI, MI and now million-acre Lake of the Woods) they have turned entire bays of cabbage weed into literal barren wastelands, drastically reducing largemouth, northern and panfish habitat and populations. They kill all the native crayfish. They occupy every inch of the bottom, and they grow so large so quickly that any predators can’t dent the populations. Like Asian carp and spiny waterfleas and Eurasian milfoil, they don’t belong here, and any fisheries biologist will explain they soon dominate the ecosystem. So I will personally trap and eat my legal limit and encourage expanded limits and commercial fishing of them to TRY to provide some counterbalance, but I expect they will permanently distort if not destroy all these ecosystems. I look at them like underwater murder hornets - not a lot of redeeming features. Except in a pot.
Ontario DNR is just as as bad as Minnesota DNR. Insane amount of trivial regulations, excessive taxation, and intense punishments. This is an example of how its both detrimental to conservation and offensive to liberty. If anyone argues against, they are just accused of wanting to completely plunder natural resources. Though I am no fan of the state, North Dakota DNR is far more reasonable then MN/Ontario. Maximizing conservation effectiveness with maximum liberty should be the goal.

Yah Jay purge them with salt. While still alive pour a bunch of salt in the bucket. They will barf up all their nasty gut stuff(the green stuff you see inside) they are way cleaner to eat this way.
Yup. I soak them off the dock in a minnow bucket(s) at least overnight so they move out some of that poop, remove any dead ones, then purge. What I do to purge (interested to hear others’ approach) is put all the crayfish in a big bucket, just cover with fresh water, then pour on handfuls of salt. I let them sit about 1/2 hour, stir them up, pour off the salt water (not on your lawn), then fill with fresh water again, stir them up, drain and you’re ready. Those “mud veins” are kind of gross, pull them out when peeling.

Yall overcooked them that's why they were hard to peel. The tails should pop right out without a fork. Watch a video on how we boil them here in Louisiana. I would love to try this species, the ones I'm use to don't look like this.

The best crawdad traps keep the bait contained in the center of the trap so the crawdads cannot eat your bait from the outside of the trap, and those bigger craws have great tasting claws too
Ah, reminds me of catching those late at the lakeshore and boiling them in a cup of water over the fire for a late night snack

I live in southwest Washington state. If there was any lake where crawfish were that plentiful it would be a big deal. I mean we got coho king and steelhead salmon for days. Also have good warmwater fisheries and huge sturgeon but if i could spend a year on your lake i’d trade the world. Apparently the columbia river has huge walleye but no one fishes em except in the far east of the state

If they are invasive, I"m surprised they don't just let you take as many as you want just to get rid of them.
you can remove intestines really fast before cooking them by twisting then pulling the telson (middle "fin" of their tail). I cannot tell for how painfull it can be for them though, some countries consider that it is a way to kill them and avoid any realease/escape of invasive crayfish specimens.

I don't get why there's a catch limit for an invasive species. I'd assume it's just in case people aren't actually differentiating between native and invasive species, and just making sure they don't overfish the native ones.

Enlarge the holes on the trap so the bigger ones can get in easier if they're not any regulations on entrance opening.
In MN the trap opening diameter can legally only be 1.5”, purportedly to exclude baby turtles that would drown - but you’re right, it excludes some of them big crawdaddies too. Never seen a baby turtle in my traps. Maybe adjusting your traps to a “generous” 1.5” should be considered.
