The celebration of Christmas (jul) "jol" in older days way back before religion hit Norway was a celebration to have a breake in the dark cold winter and that we turn more towards the sun.

That woman you gave a compliment to was for sure very rude. Of course some people don’t wanna chit-chat but that can be true for anyone. At least you can reply politely and be a bit short. Don’t take that personally.

"Pinnekjøtt" is lambs belly, dried and salted. When you cook it you place sticks of birch in the bottom of your cauldron. Add a little water, add the meat and let it cook until the meat leaves the bones. Serve with swede mashed and the cherished norwegian almond potato and you're home free! :-)

23th december is "little christmas eve" in norwegian it's called lille julaften. on little christmas we prepare for christmas eve and just relax with our family. 24th december is Christmas eve.. this is the BIG day when we eat a GREAT dinner, after that is dessert and after the dessert we open the gifts. 25, 26 and 27th december is 1, 2 and 3 christmas day. those days is when we go out and drink a LOT of alcohol and just party with our friends.. those nights the streets are packed with drunk millenials and you cant even breathe when your in the clubs. Gosh I love those days..

I remember from Twin Peaks, Lucy, the girl behind the counter in the sheriffs office discussed it. She called it forking, the way Europeans use their utensils. It is so interesting listening to this young woman. it feels like she is trying to be overly polite towards Norwegians, but I actually think she means what she is saying!

i think the reason the the woman on the train said she didn't want to talk to her was because we Norwegians LOVE to be unsocial and daydream on busses and trains. thats the reason we often take up to seats.. we just want to sit alone, listening to music, daydreaming an just minding our own business on the busses and trains

Norway was a Christian country up until just a couple of years ago actually. That is why we have so many Christian traditions, even to this day every person born in this country is automatically put into the state church register (as far as i know) even against their parents wishes.
And Christmas is called 'jul' as it is kinda based on old norse joule and is therefore not a pure Christian tradition unlike many other countries.
