  • It seams fitting to me that I've uploaded this video just after February Family Day Long Weekend in Saskatchewan. Most weekends in our Canadian winters I try to get out and get some sledding in with some friends in our snow and cold, although this weekend I ended up doing something similar but slightly different. On this particular weekend I ended up meeting up with my good friend Dave, his girlfriend, my Dad, and my kids for some fun in the wilderness. We took the kids for a small adventure on the now Frozen Assiniboine River just on the edge of Preeceville SK for a little Hike through some Willows and Trees. Along the way Dave was keeping our Hike interesting and educational for the kids by pointing some things out like deer tracks, fur, and beds, rabbit tracks, and other tidbits that the kids might find interesting and useful! We also managed to drive up to Usherville put on some snowmobile gear and take a ride on the sleds with the kids on the Rough Rider Snowmobile Trails through the Porcupine Provincial Forest. After a short ride through the forest we stopped at a popular stop, the Ushta warm up shack, and once there we got the fire going in the wood stove and cooked up some delicious fireside hotdog / sausage wraps. While we were there the kids enjoyed the outdoors and some tobogganing while the adults enjoyed our time in the cabin visiting with various sledders that passed by throughout the day. It never ceases to amaze me who you will run into at all hours in the middle of nowhere at the shacks! When we were ready to leave we enjoyed a night ride back on our sleds with the trail lit up by the full moon. On the following day I went home but we managed to sneak in some skating at the new outdoor skating rink at Kenosee Lake. I guess to summarize this long description... this was a fun enjoyable weekend spent with my friends and family in the outdoors. Not once did I hear the words from the kids " I'm bored" and how can you be? Ultimately this is one of the greatest gifts I can give my kids... an appreciation, love, wonder, respect, and hunger for the outdoors / nature in our current world filled with technology and materials.
